Special Location: The Birchmere
Hungary’s leading folk band, Muzsikas, and leading singer,
Marta Sebestyen join forces in a very special FSGW concert,
7:30om. Sunday, April 1, at the Birchmere, 3901 Mt. Vernon
Ave., Alexandria, VA. Admission is $8 (FSGW) and $10 (non
members), with a $1 seniors discount. Doors open at 6:45 pm.
With instrum entation consisting of bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies,
viola, zither, Turkish horn, violin, cello, and bouzouki, Muzsikas
play and sing the traditional tunes of their native Hungary as well
as accompany the renowned young singer M arta Seleyen. As
glasnost widens, the opportunity to hear Eastern European musi
cians is increasing. FSGW is honored to be among the first to
present this ensemble.
Special thanks go to Cardinal Mindszenty and to Washington’s
own Tisza Ensemble for help in presenting this group.

Once you have heard Sara Grey’s strong but sweet voice, or her driving
but melodic banjo playing, you will not forget it. And once you have heard
the love of traditional song that permeates her perform ances, you will
appreciate even more that FSGW audiences have another chance to hear this
fine singer on at 8:30 pm, Friday, April 27, 1990, at the WES auditorium ,
7750 16th St., NW.
Sara grew up in New Hampshire, but has lived in several of the many
corners of the world, learning and singing songs from North Carolina to
Arizona and from M ontana to England, where she lives now. She has
recorded for Folk Legacy in the US and for Fellside and Greenwich Village
in England, and has perform ed in over 30 festivals and 200 clubs. Her
particular love is for the ballacThnd lyric song, using styles she learned in the mountains of the Appalachian
South.
Admission is $6 (FSGW) and $8 (nonmembers). Come and enjoy an evening of genuinely joyful music.

FSGW Sunday Night Dance
The Return t o Glen Echo Park!
As the swallows come to Capistrano, the FSGW Sunday night contra & square dance once more returns to the
SPANISH BALLROOM at GLEN ECHO PAR K, just o ff M acA rthur Blvd., in Glen Echo MD. The dance is
aimed at interm ediate to advanced dancers (i.e. little teaching, short w alk-throughs, lots of music & dancing).
Dances start 7:30pm & end 10:30pm promptly. Admission: $4 FSGW members; $6 nonmembers.
NEW! NEW! NEW! Starting April 8 & continuing through the summer, Sunday night dancers are invited to
gather before the dances for "Picnics in the Park." Show up at 6:30. BYO Everything: share conversation & the
chance to get to know your fellow dancers better. Let’s enjoy even more of Glen Echo Park!
Apr. 1: Waltz Workshop Extravaganza! 4-5:15pm: Cotton clad stocking feet beginning waltz workshop
led by John Krumm in the dance studio. Advanced waltz workshop led by Donna Barker and Ken
H altenhoff in the Spanish Ballroom. 5:15-6om: Three part waltz taught by John K rum m followed
by open waltzing in the Spanish Ballroom. 6:15pm: Potluck supper in the Bumper Car Pavillion.
7:30-10:30pm: Evening dance of mixed contras and squares called by John K rum m . Music for
the day will be by M ark Simos, piano; Irish Musician Billy McComsky, accordion; Steve Hickman,
fiddle; and Chris Norman, woodwinds. Mark is a composer of many traditional tunes and waltzs;
the afternoon waltz workshop will feature his original compositions. Bring your membership
cards - The workshop is free to FSGW, BFMS, ATDS, MMFAC, & CDSS affiliated groups with
current membership cards. $4 to non-mem bers.
Apr. 8: Tom Hinds w ith the H ard Cider Boys. O fficia l Meeting o f the Society fo r the purposes o f
Nominations to the Board: Bring Membership Cards. as the dance is FREE to members as per our
bylaws! Tom returns to call an evening of mixed contras and squares to the music of Washington’s
own H ard Cider Boys. The band plays an eclectic blend of New England, Swing, & Southern style
music. Sandy Mitchell plays fiddle; Moe Nelson, bass and harmonica; and Zan MacLeod, tenor
banjo and guitar.
April 15: Kate Charles and the H eartbeats. Hot dancing tonight to the hot tempoed southern style music
of the Heatbeats. Kate Charles will call an evening of mixed contras and squares to the music of
Tara Nevins, fiddle; Rose Sinclair, banjo and cajun accordion; Beverly Smith, guitar; and June
D rucker, bass.
April 22: Brad Foster with Steve Hickm an & Laurie Andres. In conjunction with CDSS 75th
A nniversary celebrations in the Washington D.C. area, the FSGW Sunday night dance brings you
Brad Foster calling an evening of mixed contras and squares to the music of Steve Hickm an’s
fiddle and Laurie Andres on accordion.
April 29: WILD Wild Asparagus. George Marshall calls an evening of all contras and plays concertina,
bodhran and bones along with the rest of the gang: Ann Percival, piano, guitar, synthesizer, and
vocals; David Cantieni, the woodwind wizard, on oboe, flute, fife, saxophone and recorder; and
Susan Sternberg on fiddle.

M ark your calendars for Friday, May 4, to hear Appalachian singer, storyteller and
folk music legend Jean Ritchie in a very special FSGW concert at Washington
Ethical Society auditorium . The concert has been changed to this date owing to
schedule conflicts, and the Open Sing planners, singers and crew were generous
enough to allow us to switch their regular day to Saturday, where they will meet in a
m ember’s house.

April Program: Friday, April 20, 8:30pm
The FSGW April Program, in conjunction with the CDSS
75th Anniversary celebrations, moves to the third Fri. for this
month only, Apr. 20, 8:30pm, at WES Auditorium (7750 16th
St. NW). John Roberts & Tony Barrand will give us a lively &
entertaining presentation of English folk songs punctuated
with tales, monologues, dances and tunes, for a more complete
appreciation of the wealth, diversity, & vitality of the English
folk tradition. Perform ing together since 1969, John & Tony’s
unaccompanied 2-p art singing always has been a prim ary sta
ple of their repertoire. The pair also draw upon a variety of
instrum entation: John plays both Anglo & English concertina,
as well as being a fine banjo and guitar player; Tony plays
drums, bones & spoons. They have many recordings include
four albums of songs from their celebrated Christmas pageant, "Nowell Sing We Clear."
Roberts & Barrand are sure to bring a lift to your step and a smile to your heart: join them for the evening
