WHAT’S NEW
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
I just came back from a weekend at Disney World with my family. We had the best time,
and I donʼt think weʼll have that great of a vacation again for a while! We were lucky to
be chosen as the “first family” in the Magic Kingdom. An hour before the park opened,
we received a private tour, autographs and photos with Mickey and his friends. Then we
opened the park at the entrance with Mickey Mouse and the Mayor of Disney. Truly a
once in a lifetime experience!
The Disney photographer took more than 100 pictures of us, and I took more than 200
pictures. Good thing I bought the larger photo album! The homeowners who know my
picture-taking obsession and me know I was in hog heaven! Jackson and Isabelle had the
time of their lives and neither was ready to come home, as you can all imagine!
It is hard to believe that we are in November
already. Time really does fly when youʼre
having fun! October was here and gone in a
flash, but in that flash of time we had some
really great parties!
2
Brannon Oak Farm had a spooky Halloween
party with a live singer. They had a beast
of a ball! Everyone came in costume and
danced the night away. Weʼll have these
photos in the next newsletter. Earlier in the
month we had a College Night / Chili Cook
Off-Tailgate party. Another great night
with way too much food!
Habersham Grove also had their annual
costume party. This group never ceases to
amaze me with their original costumes and
sense of humor. Iʼll have these photos next
month, too!
Donʼt forget the December and January issues
of Neighborhood News will be combined and
should reach your mailbox in late December.
As always, Happy Reading – and Happy
Holidays. Have a safe and happy New Year!

Keys to Successful Aging
Good Habits and Positive Attitudes
By Carla Garnett
You can change how you think, feel and act when
you are older simply by changing how you think, feel
and act now, geriatrics experts say. Staying healthy,
fit and active are the keys to successful aging.
Dr. Judy Salerno, deputy director of NIH’s National
Institute on Aging (NIA), says, “When I entered
the aging field many years ago, we didn’t talk about
disease prevention. We simply characterized normal aging. Now we are seeing that people can age
successfully in good health well into old age. Disease and disability are not inevitable consequences
of aging.”
That is good news not only for individuals but also
for communities and society in general. In the last
two decades, census figures have shown that the
world’s vital statistics are changing. In the United
States, the proportion of older adults went from
roughly four percent in 1900 to 13 percent today,
and will increase to more than 20 percent by 2030.
In a recent study, scientists found that moderate
diet and exercise successfully delayed and possibly
prevented participants from developing type 2 diabetes. About 16 million people in the United States
have diabetes, which is the main cause of kidney
failure, limb amputations and new-onset blindness
in adults, as well as a major cause of heart disease
and stroke. Type 2 diabetes accounts for up to 95
percent of all diabetes cases.
“In fact,” the agency reports, “studies suggest that
not exercising is risky behavior.”
Dr. Pamela Peeke, a professor at the University of
Maryland School of Medicine, cited research data
at a “Successful Aging” seminar on the NIH campus showing that regular exercise – by people of
any age – may improve daily functioning, strength,
flexibility and endurance.
“Studies sponsored by NIA and other gerontology
centers have found that people who have been
normally sedentary and have lost a tremendous
amount of muscle mass can recoup that very nicely
and increase power and strength as well,” she said,
“even through their 80s and into their 90s.”
Changing Perceptions
“Our basic message to older people is that it’s never
too late,” Dr. Salerno says. “How your grandmother
aged is not necessarily how you will age. Genes are
not necessarily your destiny. Genes are only part
of the story.”
Source: National Institutes of Health
“The most interesting aspect of the study in terms
of aging was that diet and exercise worked better
[than drugs] in those participants ages 60 and
older,” Dr. Salerno said.
Regular exercise and physical activity are important to the health and abilities of older people,
according to research studies conducted by NIA.

BIKE SAFETY
H E A LT H M AT T E R
S
Get the Heads Up on Hel
In the October issue of
Neighborhood News, we
featured a story on the
importance of bike safety
and wearing a helmet. Just
before the article ran, two
homeowners at Brannon Oak
Farm had bicycle accidents.
Luckily, Mitch Block, The
Orchards sales manager,
happened to be driving by and
was able to drive Sonny to the
hospital. Both bikers walked
away with injuries; only one
rider was wearing a helmet.
If you experience a bicycle
accident, your broken
bones and scrapes are
sure to heal, but brain
damage can be permanent.
When riding a bike, your
head is vulnerable to
serious injury – even
in a
low-speed crash. You
can protect your head
and
your future by wearing
a helmet.
How Helmets Protec
t You
The American Academ
y of Orthopaedic Surgeo
ns
(AAOS) reports that during
a fall or crash, a helmet
absorbs much of the
force of impact that would
otherwise be directed
to the head. Thick plastic
foam (firm polystyrene)
inside the hard outer shell
of a helmet crushes to
cushion the blow. A helmet
should be replaced after
a crash.
Each year, bike-related
crashes kill approximately
900 people and injure
567,000 others. Althou
gh
more people than ever
are using bike helmets,
only
half of the more than
80 million bike riders
wear
them all the time; approx
imately 43 percent never
use helmets. Wearing a
bike helmet reduces the
risk
of serious head and brain
injury by 85 percent.
www.O rchar dsGro up.co
mets
Choosing a Helmet
Discount department stores
and bicycle shops offer
many models of helmet
s that are typically priced
around $20 and above.
Be sure to choose a helmet
that meets the standards
of the Consumer Produc
t
Safety Commission or
the Snell Memorial Founda
tion. Take some time trying
on helmets and choose
one with the right size
and fit.
AAOS offers these tips
for choosing a helmet:
• Snug - It does not slide
from side-to-side
or front-to-back.
• Level - It is square on
top of your head,
covering the top of the
forehead. It does
not tilt in any directio
n.
• Stable - The chinstrap
keeps the helmet
from rocking in any directio
n. Chinstraps
should be replaced if any
part of the buckle
breaks; otherwise, a helmet
may fly off in
an accident.

DEAR FRIENDS
& NEIGHBORS,
Dear Friend and Neighbors,
As we roll into the holiday season, our lives get busy and
somewhat hectic. Here is an article I would like to share with you
that may help with the stress of the season.
From Thanksgiving to Christmas, increased stress and overeating
are a part of life in our society. Due to increased stress levels,
we are more likely to eat for emotional reasons. The smells in
our homes, on Thanksgiving Day, stir up childhood memories
of happy times spent with family and friends. This can be a
wonderful time of the year and with a few tips, we can manage
both emotional needs and caloric intake.
Have soup as a first course. There are many soups, which you
can prepare, days in advance, and heat through just before
Thanksgiving dinner.
Have an extra slice of turkey. Turkey is packed with nutrition and
lower in calories than most other meats. Just donʼt eat the skin.
Try to reduce sugar amounts in recipes. Cut the amount of sugar
called for in fruit pie recipes by one third to one half. Iʼve always
done this and prefer the taste. Start with one third less and see
if it is to your taste.
Try alternatives to heavy fats in recipes. For a pumpkin pie
recipe, use an egg substitute and condensed milk instead of eggs
and milk. Try using nonfat sour cream and one half the butter
normally used in your mashed potatoes. In your stuffing recipe,
add a little less butter and a little more chicken broth.
Follow as many of these tips as you like. If you choose only
a few, you will be decreasing your caloric intake and stress.
Balance the more traditional, higher calorie dishes with some of
the simpler, lower calorie dishes. By choosing not to make every
dish that your mother or grandmother used to make, you will be
creating less stress for yourself.
Reduce the calories and the stress. You will be thankful for it.
Sincerely,
Geri Beckmann, Resales Specialist
