ON THE COVER: Many members remember the huge auction of antique trucks and machinery held at
the late Earl Marhanka's farm back in 1991. From time to time, as I attend truck shows, I run across trucks
from that auction that have since been restored. Such is the case with this 1937 Mack AC High Lift coal truck.
It was purchased by the late Bill Moon, the founder of the I-80 Truck Stop, and subsequently restored. Mr.
Moon passed away before the restoration was completed, and before his dream of an antique truck museum
was realized.

KAARC JUNE MINUTES
Date: July 15, 2014
KAARC MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES
The KAARC July meeting was called to order by
President Stan Rakowski at Kalamazoo Valley
Community College.
Fall Color Tour – A volunteer is needed to organize
this event!
NEW BUSINESS:
Fall Color Tour – A volunteer is needed to organize this
event! Ken Maxam is no longer chairing this event.
We need a new Secretary to fill in until fall elections.
MINUTES: The minutes of the June meeting were
approved after a correction regarding Bob Conrad's
service in the U.S. Army.
Stan reminded all that nominations for officers will
start in October, but it is not too early to start thinking
of possible nominees.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Gary Hawkins reported
on expenses including printing of the Arc & Spark,
Red Barn ads and flyers, various awards and picnic
expenses. The report was accepted as presented.
Meeting adjourned at 7:30.
PAST ACTIVITIES: Reports were presented on the
following July Events.
July 4th Picnic: Bob Packer thanked all who came to
his place for the annual gathering.
Mad Dogs and Englismen: T.W. Lane reported that
the car count was 326 this year, down from 425 at last
year's event.
Germanfest Show: T.W. was impressed by the quality
of the Mercedes, BMW's and a Porsche Carrera.
National Crosley Meet: Dick Saddler attended the
show in Wauseon, Ohio. A Crosley restorer gave Dick
an original convertible top to use as a pattern.
St. Ignace Show: Dan Kamerman attended and
reported that those infamous pouting children
mannequins are now voice activated.
Rich Salvaggio reported on the Tractor and Truck
show at Charlton Park.
Grand Rapids Freedom Cruise: T.W. Lane attended
and said the event was well promoted. Lots of
motorcycles and street rods started the cruise at the
Delta Plex.

The club then took a guided tour of the Automotive
Technology Department at Kalamazoo Valley. The tour
was conducted by Doug Martin. The programs there
are geared toward having students ready to meet ISE
Certification requirements. Much experimentation
has also been done with alternative fuels and the
most recent addition to the department has been the
donation of hybrid automobiles for educational use.

35TH ANNUAL I-80 TRUCKERS' JAMBOREE
by John McLellan
There once was a time when I made the trek to Walcott, Iowa and the I-80 Truckers' Jamboree behind the
wheel of my old Mack B-61. That time was before diesel prices shot up to nearly five dollars a gallon. The fuel
for the trip used to cost around $120; today it is over $300. I still attend the show, but I drive something that
gets much better mileage. Here are some photos of trucks in the I-80 Truck Museum that is on the grounds of
the truck stop.
1954 Fageol moving van was actually
created from a Fruehauf trailer modified
to fit on an International truck chassis and
running gear. Member Jeff Maile has one
of these in his collection

KISSEL, APPERSONS, INDIAN. . . Oh My!
by Steve Turner
Let’s start with Kissels. Gold Bugs that is. And to put a finer point on it, 1923 models, I don’t know the year that I first saw
Phil and Donna Renuart’s golden Kissel, but I do remember distinctly the location of that sighting. It was in the garage of
a gentleman in Battle Creek. Phil had asked me if I wanted to ride along while he drove over to check on the Kissel car’s
restoration progress as well as sort out a few other issues regarding the car. As this was my first encounter with a Kissel
dead or alive, I was intrigued. Fast forward a number of years to July 4, 2014. Again I recall the exact location of this
sighting of the Gold Bug. It was in Bob Packer’s field where the car sat alongside a number of other KAARC and Grape
Region Model A club member’s vehicles. And this time the Renuarts climbed aboard and off went the Kissel under its own
power.
Next up is the Apperson, specifically a 1914 Jack Rabbit edition. I spied it parked in front of the diner at the Gilmore
Museum on cruise night July 9, 2014. Another yellow car, this one appeared to be pretty much an unmolested original or
a well patina-ed older restoration. It belongs to Steve Wallbridge from Florida. His father had purchased the car back in
the 1970’s in the Sunshine state. It then sat quietly in a garage until this year when Steve spent time and money to get it
back in service. He stated his goals were twofold in so doing. First, in honor of his father he wanted to take the Apperson
back to Kokomo where both he and the car had been born. His intent was to participate in the 4th of July parade in that
city. As it turned out, neither of the 2 Appersons residing in the Kokomo Automobile Museum would start so Steve’s Jack
Rabbit headed up the parade that day.
The second goal Steve had set was to bring his Apperson back to west Michigan where once it resided. A Woodbury
resident, Larry Baum’s father had owned that car prior to it being sold to someone in Florida. Since there was a strong
Baum family connection to his car his intent was to reunite the car with some of the Baum family members. The presence
of several Baum family members at the Gilmore Museum’s cruise-in on the 9th accomplished that goal as well. The car
was driven around the museum grounds which delighted not only the Baums but other attendees.
Item number three, the Indian motorcycle. Parked on the corner across from the diner that same July Wednesday sat a red
and black 1940’s Indian, again either an unmolested original or an older restoration. In either case the cycle was a crowd
pleaser as a number of attendees gathered around it to examine its various components. Near the end of the evening,
all were treated to the sight and sound of the Indian as the owner, donning his period correct helmet, started up his two
wheeler and drove off into the sunset.
And so you can easily see that …..”We’re not in Kansas anymore!”

DON AND MARION HIXON ATTEND THREE SHOWS
by Don Hixon
MOSCOM Mustang club had a day at Michigan International Speedway on July 11. It was a beautiful, sunny
day. Vendors, 250 Mustangs 1964-2014 each got a chance to run the track for 6 laps in groups of 26. Controlled
speed of 70 MPH. Some managed over 100+. Later in the day they offered 6 additional laps. I am not a member
of this club but they welcomed us and let us play with the others. The track picture was shot by very brave wife
Marion at some speed over 80 MPH on turn one. Great outing on my birthday.
Zeeland car show was on 71514 featured cars were Mustangs. Small show family oriented, well
organized, friendly, if the Mustang Club had not attended (30 cars) it would have been a very small
show.
PAW PAW CAR SHOW 71914 was well attended and a wide selection of cars. We enjoyed the day. My
41 Buick and my wife Marion in one shot the other is of Main Street, Red Arrow Highway.

The Winter Swap Meet lost one of its longest term vendors with the recent passing of Lenny Hughes from
Elkhart, Indiana. Lenny was a very interesting guy. He owned and drove a fuel dragster when he lived in
Illinois and was a lifelong friend and match race partner of drag race legend, Chris Karamesines. He was a
wizard at rebuilding old magnetos for everything from fuel dragsters to farm equipment. That's Len in front
of us at the California Hot Rod Reunion in 2005. He was planning to go with us again this fall. In fact, I
was looking up his number when I got the call that he had passed away. Godspeed Lenny!
