annual report 2015 - Headlands Center for the Arts
ANNUAL REPORT 2015
Looking back on the first year of our ambitious,
five-year Business Plan, 2015 was full of strategic investments—in the people, the partnerships, the
programs, and the historic campus that make Headlands Center for the Arts an inspiring place for
creative exploration and meaningful engagement. Everything we do here is driven by the belief that
artists and their ideas are essential to a vibrant cultural landscape and, as you’ll see in the pages to
follow, 2015 was no exception. To name but a few specifics:
• We expanded the breadth of opportunities for artists and audiences to connect with one
another, presenting 42 public programs and welcoming nearly 13,000 visitors in 2015—
more than ever before.
• We hosted a number of public programs, including an interactive dinner orchestrated by
pioneering social practice artist Rirkrit Tiravanija (AIR ‘15); a conversation with author
Mary Gaitskill (AIR ‘15) and cultural critic Greil Marcus; and an evening of outdoor
performance with Mica Sigourney (AIR ‘15) and fellow drag artists. These are just a few
of the artist-driven events showcasing the depth of talent across Headlands Artists
Programs.
• For the makers among us, our new Fieldwork Sessions offered intimate, hands-on workshops exploring myriad creative practices, from the alchemy of natural dyes, scents, and
tinctures inspired by the native flora of the Marin Headlands, to a range of storytelling
techniques involving basket weaving, drawing, sound, and even fortune telling.

• And finally, we provided a record 92 artists with the time, space, and professional and
financial support to recharge, reflect, and achieve creative breakthroughs. As described
by 2015 AIR writer Yasmine El Rashidi, Headlands residencies can be life changing:
The residency was completely transformative...I walked and walked the trails for hours.
My mind opened, I walked through and out of anxieties, I walked into ideas, out of them.
I watched the nature around me, which can only be inspiring. My fellow artists were
extraordinary. With each one I exchanged something, gained something, learned something. I made lifelong friends with people I admire. I left a changed person—emotionally,
intuitively, creatively. This is an experience I will carry with me forever.
As always, we are tremendously grateful for the dedication, support, and generosity of spirit embodied
by our staff, board, volunteers, partners, members, and the more than 1,350 artists who have lived and
worked at Headlands over the past 33 years. None of this would have been possible without you, and
we look forward to celebrating many more milestones over the next four years and beyond!

2015 BY THE NUMBERS
In 2015, Headlands continued to
maintain its culture of fiscal discipline and cultivate support for its annual programming as well as current and future
capital commitments. Headlands closed 2015 with $2,112,900, the strongest cash position in the organization’s history.
Of that, $363,030 is unrestricted, $297,185 is program restricted, $1,177,685 is capital restricted, and $275,000 is a
Board designated reserve.
This year’s financial results include contributions totaling $777,801 for The Commons capital and capacity building
project. Scheduled for winter 2017, The Commons addresses key life safety and accessibility issues, while also enhancing programmatic and audience engagement efforts. As of year-end 2015, Headlands raised $1,740,600 of the
$1,800,000 goal and expects to complete this fundraising initiative in mid 2016.
