SPRING CLASSES BEGIN:
MONDAY, JANUARY 9
Welcome to the fall 2016 Communiversity catalog! We are very pleased to offer over
350 classes this semester covering all types of topics. As always, take a look and don’t
be afraid to try something new. Communiversity is a wonderful opportunity for folks to
expand their horizons and we encourage you to give it a shot.
As you know, the Communiversity program has been around for over 40 years and we
hope to keep it around at least for another 40. We strive to keep the class registrations at
a reasonable level so you are able to sign up for several without doing damage to your
billfold. The material fees collected go directly to the convener as sometimes teaching
classes require supplies which can be a bit costly. All conveners teach classes as volunteers so, again, we are able to keep the program running without incurring enormous
expenses.
One of the most difficult challenges is distributing the catalogs. While we have a very
large list of locations, each semester we feel we miss places that would be a natural fit
for catalogs to be available. This is where we need your assistance. If you are able to
take a bundle or two to your place of work, coffee shop, library or other sites, we would
be very appreciative. It would be no problem to arrange a convenient pick-up spot to
meet. Also, if just want to send us some location suggestions, we will do our best to add
it to the existing list and drop some there ourselves. While it is easy to browse the catalog on-line, we understand the Communiversity catalog itself is very popular and many
of you eagerly wait for it to be available. Please drop us a line at [email protected]
with any feedback. It certainly will be much appreciated!
Finally, this semester I leave you with some bittersweet news. Our wonderful assistant
Vincent Tabb will be leaving the Communiversity program to begin a new chapter in
his life. Vincent has enrolled in a graduate program at the University of California –
North Ridge and will be beginning classes in mid-August. Many of you have had the
good fortune to visit with Vincent, either in person, or on the telephone. His warm
engaging smile and can-do attitude has brought much joy to the program. He will be
highly missed. I know on a personal level I would have never been able to become
Executive Director of Communiversity without Vincent by my side. Vincent, your
future promises to be bright and productive. We are quite certain Communiversity, and
UMKC as a whole, has not heard the last of you. Good luck!

About the Artist
“Trailerpark Caligula” is the identity used by 2016 UMKC Studio Art graduate Joey Hill
when making his work. The name comes from his blending of low culture aesthetics
and academic style illustration to illuminate the artfulness and turmoil in the daily life
of youth culture. Often using surreal imagery to illustrate the inner thoughtfulness of
his subjects, Joey plays with visual duality in the picture plane to create links. Born in
Grandview, Missouri Joey has lived in Kansas City his entire life and often uses local
residents as models. Along with illustration Joey also employs printmaking, embroidery,
painting and sculpture to achieve his work’s overarching look and theme.
We have everything
you need.

Retreasuring – Giving Jewelry a
New Life
You inherit a box full of beads, chains
and non-precious jewelry—what do you
do with it? Or you have a collection of
jewelry that you haven’t worn and want
to create pieces that are new and fresh.
In Retreasuring™, we take the original
components and mix them with my own
extensive collection of vintage, antique
and recycled beads and components to create brand new “old” designs. In this single
session 3 hour class you can make as
many pieces as you want: earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Are you interested in
Retreasuring™ yours or someone else’s
jewelry? Bring a piece or several that you
would like to transform. Items should fit
in quart bag. Make something special for
the holidays. Bring your friends for a fun,
creative, event. Open to 4 people.

Introduction to Cognitive
Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia
– CBT-I
This class teaches the basic techniques
of Cognitive Behavioral Treatment for
Insomnia, called “CBT-I.” A new recommendation from the American College of
Physicians (the ACP) stated that research
comparing CBT-I with sleeping pills
shows that CBT-I is highly effective and
has few side effects. The ACP recommended CBT-I as “the first line treatment”
for persistent insomnia, not sleeping pills.
Learning the techniques of CBT-I can provide the tools needed to help you successfully try self-management of insomnia.

Mindfulness for Stress Reduction
Do you want to cultivate a deeper sense
of happiness, experience less stress in
your life and improve your relationships?
Students will learn a number of specific
meditation practices designed to help
reduce “brain chatter” and respond more
appropriately to thoughts and feelings.
Our minds are easily distracted, habitually examining past events and trying to
anticipate the future. When we’re living
in the past, we often experience feelings
of depression; when we’re thinking about
the future, we feel anxious. Mindfulness
is about learning to live in the present
moment and experience joy.

Wear Your Confidence
This course will focus on personal growth
and confidence building. Each topic of
study will allow the student to self-reflect
as well as set a goal to build confidence
in each topic of focus. The class will offer
guest speakers. The student will complete
a goal for each topic and evaluate their
own personal growth throughout the semester. Most confidence books, groups, or
programs make you feel good temporarily
because they never give you concrete
ways to grow; this course will offer a 16
week plan taking your confidence to the
next level. The Wear Your Confidence
approach guides you through focusing
on the deep rooted mindsets relating to
lifestyle behaviors that create barriers to
our confidence.
