OUR SCHOOL
History
In 1890, the Hong Kong Government set up the Central School for Girls. When Mr. E.R. Belilios, a Jewish
philanthropist, donated $25,000 for a new building for the Central School for Girls in 1893, a 3-storey building
was erected in Hollywood Road and named after Mr. Belilios. In April 1965, the school was relocated to its
present premises in Tin Hau Temple Road. To mark the occasion, a new school motto – “Climb High, See
Wide”, a school song and a new school badge were created.
School Management Committee (SMC)
Since the implementation of school-based management in 1989, school has been given more autonomy in
personnel, financial and other day-to-day administrative matters. Under the leadership of Ms LI Mei-fun
PEO(HK), the SMC met three times during the school year. Members took an active part at the meetings,
demonstrating excellent collaboration and partnership among all stakeholders.
SMC members for 2013/2014 were:

To discuss School Development Plan 2014-2017and to

The First Staff Development Day was a blend of guest speech and in-house sharing in three sessions. In the
first session, Ms. Esther Ho, the chairperson of Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters and Guidance
Masters, shared the rationale behind career and life planning and her experience in school. The second
session was a sharing of several commendable teachers on their experience in building good relationship with
students. After lunch, in the third session, a physiotherapist was invited to give a talk on how to relieve pain
and to coach us some simple stretching exercises in the workplace. As a whole, feedback from colleagues
was positive on the aforementioned programmes in the First Staff Development Day.
In the Second Staff Development Day, colleagues went on a tour in Tai O. In the morning, a guided tour was
organized to introduce the history and culture of Tai O village. With the beautiful weather on that day,
colleagues enjoyed a plenteous lunch with delicious Tai O dishes and joined various group activities in the
afternoon. It was a rewarding day especially in terms of team building.
Finally, since the year 2013-2014 marked the end of the 3-year school development cycle, the Third Staff
Development was scheduled for discussion on the next School Development Plan 2014-2017 and the Annual
School Plan 2014-2015. Based on the findings of the Stakeholders’ Survey, the APASO, the SWOT & KISS
analysis, teachers were divided into groups of different KLAs and teams to discuss the direction of the next
School Development Plan. Discussions were fruitful and constructive suggestions were obtained for the
implementation of the Major Concerns in the Annual School Plan for 2014-2015.

OUR LEARNING AND TEACHING
Learning and Teaching
In BPS, students are nurtured to be life-long learners who continuously collaborate to strive for excellence in
their pursuit of knowledge. Their exemplary academic performance does not come as a coincidence but
rather the hard work of a team of dedicated and professional staff who unceasingly learn to excel and teach to
inspire.
Aware of the huge impact of teachers on young people and how values and attitudes could be inculcated
through classroom interactions, our teachers collaborate to deliver the kind of education we pledge to offer
through the following strategies:

To promote the spirit of the school motto – Climb High See Wide;

To create opportunities for life-wide learning whereby students acquire knowledge and skills through
experiences and observations;

To develop students as self-directed and life-long learners;

To encourage students to share knowledge through peer learning;

To foster a reflective culture among students; and

To train students to be critical thinkers with enhanced problem solving skills.
English Speaking Leagues
Our school has made an important stride forward in language
education. To cater for the diverse interests and abilities of
our students, we have been offering modern language
courses since 2008, which would eventually align with the
NSS.
With the partnership and full support of the
Department of Modern Languages and Culture of the
University of Hong Kong, we offer modern language courses
starting from S.1 and eventually leading up to NSS. To
develop our students’ global perspectives, we continue to
offer courses in Spanish and Japanese.
In 2010-2011 a programme called the English Speaking Leagues was introduced to the school. Thanks to the
Chairlady of the BOGF, Mrs. Nellie Fong, very successful and renowned native English speakers agreed to be
Captains in this programme. These prominent members of society conduct conversation classes with small
groups of students after school. They included Sir David Akers-Jones, KBE, CMG, GBM, JP, former Chief
Secretary of Hong Kong; Sir Ti-liang Yang, GBM, JP, LLD, DLitt, Former Chief Justice of Hong Kong; Mr. Stephen
Selby, JP, Associate Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Mr. James Blake, OBE, JP, former Chief
Officer of the KCR; Mrs. Rachel Cartland, retired Government Servant; Mrs. Anthea Strickland, Chairperson of
the Minerology Society; and Mr. Mark Shuper, Co-founder and Executive Director of Sprouts Foundation. 150
students were involved from S.1 to S.6. The yearly programme culminated in a certificate presentation
ceremony where all of the students and their Captains shared their experiences and mingle over a cup of tea.

Support for Student Development
A whole-school approach was adopted to facilitate students’ whole-person development. Pastoral services
encompassing Careers Guidance, Cross-curricular Programmes, Discipline, ECA, Community Services,
Environmental Education, Guidance & Counselling and Moral, Civic and National Education echoed the school’s
genuine commitment in fostering student development. Three periods of Life-wide Learning in Day 1
afternoon (alternate cycle) was structured in the timetable which facilitated the implementation of a rich
variety of student-centred activities. Also, Life Education was conducted in junior forms to inculcate correct
values and reinforce proper behavior among students.
To help students with financial difficulties, funding from the School-based After-school Learning and Support
Programme and the Jockey Club Life-wide Learning Fund was fully utilized to ensure that every student could
have the opportunity to broaden their exposure, explore new frontiers and develop global perspectives which
are essential for young people in the era of changes. Our school has been most fortunate to have parents
and alumni with shared vision and commitment. The Parents-Teachers’ Association (PTA) Education Fund
made generous donations of prizes and scholarships, subsidized ECA activities, upgraded school facilities as
well as provided immediate relief to students with unexpected financial difficulties.
Measures to Cater for Learning Diversity
The diversity of students’ learning ability is addressed through the following ways:







Provision of a broad and balanced curriculum with a wide range of subject choices
Curriculum planning, tailoring and adaptation to cater for diverse abilities
Adoption of collaborative learning strategies to promote peer learning and support
Adaptations to assessment to recognize different abilities
Enhancement and enrichment programmes for the gifted and the less abled students
Deployment of various grants to employ extra teachers and supporting staff
Ethos building to recognize diversity and individual differences

MAJOR AREAS OF CONCERN
Major Concern 1:
To enhance the effectiveness of Learning and Teaching.
In Major Concern 1, the following measures were implemented to enhance the effectiveness of learning and
teaching in school.
Our first aim was to motivate students to learn better and achieve higher goals by stretching their abilities and
to recognize their effort and achievements. To achieve this, bonus questions were set in uniform tests or
assignments. Students were encouraged to make attempts and stretch their potentials. Since this was the
third year of implementation, the questions demonstrated high quality. Besides, higher attempting rate and
scores also reflected that students were keener in trying more challenging questions. Statistical analysis of
students’ performance in the bonus questions were given to Heads of department as reference materials for
follow-up discussion in subject panel meetings. Moreover, teachers were encouraged to arrange more
meaningful learning activities such as field trips, visits, study tours, interschool competitions for students to
widen their horizons through outside classroom activities. In the realm of gifted education, high achievers
were nominated by school to participate in various interschool competitions, training programmes and
scholarships.
In addition, measures were taken to ameliorate students’ learning drive through positive reinforcements.
Twenty-seven Active Learning Awards were given out to recognize students with best learning attitude and
high participation in class throughout the whole academic year. Apart from regular displays of students’ good
work by each subject department, this year S1 and S2 Students presented their cross - curricular projects with
the theme “ Perseverance” to S1 to S3 students in different classrooms and the school hall during the Learning
Celebration Day held in May. Students were given chances to show their appreciation and recognition to the
good work of their fellow schoolmates’ by voting for the best performed groups after their presentations or
performances. Moreover, students were encouraged to prepare for their lessons and do regular revision
before and after lessons. It was hoped that students would build up a self-directed learning habit through
these practices.
The second aim was to equip students and teachers with updated pedagogies in order to optimize learning
outcome. Teachers were encouraged to enroll for various professional training programmes so as to equip
them with trend of development in their specialized subject areas so as to maximize teaching effectiveness.
Furthermore, in-house sharing such as lesson observation of senior teachers and HoDs and collaborative
lesson planning periods for S1 core subjects were encouraged to promote professional sharing on teaching.
Furthermore, each teacher was invited to conduct a students’ survey at the end of the school year to solicit
students’ feedback on their teaching. After collecting students’ feedback, teachers had to do a “KISS”
analysis reflecting on how to enhance their teaching capacity.
As a whole, students were more motivated to learn and a more interactive learning atmosphere was
established as reflected in lesson observations. In a nutshell, through the implementation the above
measures in Major Concern 1, the aims to enhance the effectiveness of learning and teaching were achieved
and the next target is to reinforce the self-directed learning attitude and skills of students.

Major Concern 2:
To cultivate in students a set of core and sustaining values with
respect to their roles in School, Community, Country and The
World.
Coordinated with various functional teams, the steering committee closely monitored the progress of the
programmes and encouraged greater collaboration among them. The programmes organized aimed at
cultivating in students a set of core values to their roles in school, community, country and the world.
To cultivate in students the core values of BPS, a number of programmes including talks, sharing sessions,
campaign, workshops and visits were organized. Measures such as regular class teacher meetings, life forums,
board design and drama competitions were adopted to reinforce good manners as the mark of an educated
person. Different types of environmental protection ambassador schemes and programmes, such as School
Cleanliness Campaign and Recycling Campaign enhanced students’ awareness in environmental sustainability.
Leadership training, workshops and inter-class competitions on responsibility were organized to train students
to be responsible and considerate members of the school and society.
In addition, the Community Services Unit arranged a wide spectrum of community services for students to
cultivate the core value of compassion and care. The tailor-made voluntary service programmes for all S5
students and the workshops conducted by Oxfam Cyber School have broadened students’ perspectives and
sharpened their awareness of the needs of society. A number of services outside Hong Kong were also
arranged. 60 students took part in the service programme to Qingyuan. In this study tour, students had to
prepare training aids and help to set up study room in the school. International Understanding Trips to
Macau were also arranged under the sponsorship of Rotary Club. The visits were very well-received by
students as they had a taste of the life of the needy.
Furthermore, in order to arouse students’ social awareness, there were Senior Form iTeen Leader Program
organized by ICAC, Moral Drama Competition, Visit to the Resource Centre, Commentaries on Current Affairs
and Sharing after Flag-hoisting Ceremony. MCNE focused on how to optimize the existing programmes to
promote moral, civic and national education. This year, an interflow activity in Foshan was organized by the
MCNE Team to all S2 students. It was a successful experience and most of the participants found the
interflow helped their personal growth. A better understanding towards the history and culture of our
country was further strengthened. Besides, a number of programmes, for example, 領袖生北京交流計劃
and 慶祝中華人民共和國成立 65 周年暨「薪火相傳」平台成立 5 周年內地交流活動計劃 were also
arranged to strengthen students’ understanding of modern China.
Apart from the above measures, local attachment and exchange programmes such as Singapore Exchange
Programme, OXBRIDGE (Oxford & Cambridge) Summer Exchange Tour, Canadian Culture & English Summer
Camp at Thompson Rivers University and Stanford International Youth Program were organized to provide
opportunities for our students to think from global perspectives and understand the world as a global village.
Another useful platform for values education is the Life-wide Learning lessons, during which a wide variety of
activities would be arranged to nurture them to be global citizens and passionate future leaders.

Major Concern 3:
To help students develop healthy habits and lifestyles,
constructive attitudes and positive outlook on life and values,
thereby enhancing their resilience to adversity.
Launch of Healthy School Programme
The Narcotics Division of the Security Bureau and the Beating Drugs Fund Association confirmed to continue
providing funding to launch the Healthy School Programme with a drug testing component (HSP (DT)) for the
2012-2015 school years. BPS conjoined seven Government schools in Eastern, Wan Chai, Central & Western
and Islands districts and collaborated with an NGO to continue implement HSP (DT) in School Year 2013/14.
In addition, HSP (DT) is a school-based programme comprising both diversified personal growth programmes
and a drug testing component. Participation in the drug testing component was voluntary.
A whole school approach was adopted to foster a healthy school environment. We solicited the support of
parents and the community in creating an environment conducive to the healthy development of students.
The school called on collaboration with NGOs, and gained support from social service organizations, which
successfully facilitated building an anti-drug culture at school.
Preventive and complementary anti-drug education for students
To provide opportunities for students to participate in HSP activities and promote the personal wellness of
young people, a wide variety of activities were designed to cater for our school’s circumstances and students’
needs. All activities were conducted by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals – Cross Centre.
Besides, the Healthy Living Expo was organized and students displayed great zeal. Activities include a healthy
life info-exhibition and a SMART TRUCK allowing students to experience the virtual world of drugs aiming at
raising students’ awareness of health-related matters.
Also, a series of skills development courses such as leadership training camp, workshops on emotion
management, peer counsellors training programmes, talent development programmes like beat box, rope
skipping, sand painting and balloon twisting were organized for students to join.
In addition to the activities for students, effective parenting-skills seminar and interactive
parenting-experience sharing workshop were held to educate parents about nurturing children with love and
care. About 60 parents attended the events.
To administer voluntary drug tests and to promote health and civic responsiveness
The school clearly expounded objectives and guidelines to relevant parties about the policy and detailed
arrangements of school drug testing, in order to convey the idea of the drug test as a civic responsibility and a
health concern to stakeholders. This year around 20% students signed up for the drug test scheme, and they
were randomly selected for the hair testing. Three school visits were performed and the testing results were
all negative.
To assist the NGO in carrying out drug tests, a School Project Assistant (SPA) was in charge of the whole scheme
to ensure the smooth flow of the testing process, security and confidentiality of participants’ personal data.
The provisions delivered in the HSP agreement were completely fulfilled.
In the past year, students were enthusiastically immerged in an anti-drug atmosphere; parents were assured of
the healthy development of their daughters. Such a meaningful programme will be proceeding briskly as one
of the school’s major concerns in the coming year and unremitting efforts will be made to benefit our students.
