Friday May 8 th at The Winchester in
Cleveland – Performance by Smokin
Fez Monkeys and Austin “Walkin’
Cane” Charanghat.The Smokin’ Fez
Monkeys are an acoustic folk band
loaded with old favorites and originals, and
armed with a batch of low tech whizbangs
that can barely be classified as instruments.
They are a special ops unit in the war against
seriousness. But you can just call them a jug
band. Austin “Walkin’ Cane”
Charanghat plays original & classic delta
blues featuring slide guitar and
baritone vocals. While performing on
Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a homeless
man called out “Hey Walkin’ Cane got
some spare change for a brother?!”
Charanghat took the jibe as his nickname.
This is a benefit show to send them all to
France for F.I.M.U. (Featured on the cover)
Tickets are $5.00. 9pm.

The Winchester Tavern and
Music Hall, in Lakewood,
welcomes Allan Holdsworth on
Saturday, May 16th for one
9:00pm show. Considered to be
one of the 20th century’s most
prominent guitarists,
Holdsworth has consistently
proven himself to be an
innovator in between and
within the jazz and rock music
genres. His biography spans 4
decades, and includes a long
list of admirers, including
Eddie VanHalen. Holdsworth
has recently completed a tour
of Europe and his U.S. tour
includes only this one stop in
the Cleveland area. To learn more about this
influential guitarist and his accomplishments,
visit www.therealallanholdsworth.com. Also
check out www.thewinchester.net for more
information about the show.
Take just a few minutes to learn about
these two performers and read their bios.
You will undoubtedly be impressed by their
achievements, and the paths their careers
have followed. Take the opportunity to see
one or even both of them in concert and
witness how unique styles as well as
traditional techniques can fuel success. ... It’s

individuals
invest in the
passing of this
truly American
art form from
one generation
to the next.
The
information
available at
these events
can help build
the foundation
upon which a
musical career
can be built.
From there, it’s
up to you.
That’s the
wonderful thing
about art,
whether you
express yourself
through music,
painting, dance
or whatever, the
truth is, “it’s up
to you”.
When learning about jazz, you’ll discover
a vast array of musical styles that seems
almost endless. There’s smooth jazz,
contemporary jazz, traditional and so on.
Yet there are common threads that are shared
by each of the different categories, one of
the most important being, the freedom to
express yourself and to share your emotions
through your instrument, be it a guitar,
clarinet or your voice. Again, it’s up to you.
I have the utmost respect for the artists
who study the legendary jazz musicians and
their techniques, and educate themselves to
carry on in the footsteps of the masters. I
also understand and respect the musician
who calls upon different influences, maybe
from completely
different genres, and
blends these with his
own technique to create
a unique style and
sound.
There are a couple
of prominent artists
coming to our area who
have done just this.
You may not
immediately recognize
the names, but they are
definitely worth
checking out.
Kim Waters is
coming to the Tangier
stage in Akron, for two
shows on Friday, May
8th. Show times are
7:30pm and 9:30.

Like many people, I’ve spent the past
several weeks in anticipation of the Tri C

many who took advantage of this fantastic
educational opportunity. The staff of the

sponsoring such a fine event.

Chardonnay
was one of the
first ‘viniferas’
[European
style grapes] to
be successfully
grown here in
northeast Ohio.
While it is
surely
susceptible to
injury from our
uneven and
rather harsh
winter
temperatures,
it is usually
experiences less winter damage than more
tender varieties like Sauvignon Blanc,
Merlot or Pinot Noir.
The integrity of a wine producing region
is based largely on its ability to grow the
fruit from which local wines can be made.
When pioneers like Arnie Esterer of
Conneaut illustrated that the variety could
successfully be grown and yield wines of
notable quality, many regional producers
followed his lead.
Chardonnay vines take their name from a
village in France near Macon and yield
rather longish bunches with golden berries
that are almost translucent when fully ripe.
As finished wines, they very much reflect
growing conditions and cellaring techniques
www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999
used by each winemaker. Some chardonnays
are grown in heavy soils, fermented and aged
in oak barrels for
an extended
period. The
resulting wines
are big, full of
vanilla, heavy
with oak and long
lived. Other
grapes are grown
in light gravely
soils, fermented
in stainless steel
and aged only for
a few weeks or
months in oak.
They are fresher,
lighter, less
complex with a
fruit ‘up front’
finish.
Regardless of
techniques used,
most
chardonnays age
well, developing
depth,
complexity and
interest in the
bottle.
Every fine restaurant offers a plethora of
chardonnay selections. Some cynics believe
it became the country’s most popular white in
the early eighties because it has a name that
is easy to pronounce. While there may be a
grain of truth in that suggestion, a more
plausible explanation is that chardonnay is
truly a great grape which produces pleasant,
interesting wines and complements many
styles and varieties of cuisine. With flavors
of apple, pear, citrus, peach, butter, honey,
butter and vanilla, how could it not be widely
accepted as an appealing food wine?
Since chardonnay is so widely available, a
festive evening with friends might be planned
around a ‘varietal’ tasting. Visit several of
the local wineries that produce the wine and
May 6 - 20, 2009
purchase a bottle from each. Trek to your
favorite retail wine shop and pick out one
chardonnay each from France, northern
California, southern California, Australia and
perhaps South Africa. Chill the bottles
slightly and conceal each in a brown bag.
Provide some simple breads and cheeses.
Invite your guests to compare, contrast, share
notes and learn more about this most
appealing wine variety.

White Wine
Sangria
The beauty of the simple White Wine
Sangria recipe is that it is as delicious as it is
easy, and it only gets better as you add your
favorite fruits!
Ingredients:
• 1 Bottle of white wine (Riesling, Albarino,
Chablis, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris,
Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc)
• 2/3 cup white sugar
• 3 oranges (sliced) or may substitute 1 cup
of orange juice)
• 1 lemon (sliced)
• 1 lime (sliced)
• 1/2 liter of ginger ale or club soda (ginger
ale for those with a sweeter tooth!)
Preparation:
Pour wine in the pitcher and squeeze the
juice wedges from the orange, lemon and
lime into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges
(leaving out seeds if possible) and add sugar.
Chill overnight. Add ginger ale or club soda
just before serving.
Addition ideas: sliced strawberries, peaches,
handful of fresh blueberries, raspberries,
kiwi, a shot or two of gin, brandy or rum, a
cup of citrus-flavored soda pop.

Markko Vineyard in Conneaut. This is an
easy hike at the North Kingsville Sand
Barrens. In late May, the beautiful native
lupine will be in full bloom. A late West
Virginia White butterfly may still be flying
and several migratory birds should be
moving through the barrens and forests. After
our search for wildflowers and other natural
delights, enjoy lunch and a wine tasting at
Markko Vineyard.
July 18, Geneva Swamp in Ashtabula
County and Debonné Vineyards in
Madison. July is one of the most exciting
times to visit a swamp. Wildflowers are in
bloom and possibly native orchids as well.
Insects, amphibians and reptiles are
abundant. We’ll look for ferns and special
swampland trees, such as the pumpkin ash.
There is no shortage of birds at this time of
year, though they are more difficult to locate.
Work up a thirst on this trip into Northeast
Ohio’s outback. Afterward, sample wines and
enjoy lunch at Debonné Vineyards.
August 22, Burkholder Preserve in
Ashtabula County and Laurello
Vineyards in Geneva. Take a peaceful
walk along the bluff of the Grand River
through two outstanding forest communities
at the Burkholder Preserve. The Beech Maple
Forest and Red Oak-White Pine-Hemlock
Forest here are likely home to Dark-eyed
Junco, Wood Thrush and Scarlet Tanager.
Following the hike, taste wine and enjoy
lunch at Laurello Vineyards.
Natural areas tours will start at 10am and end
around noon. Afterward, participants will
travel to the designated winery for a light

Riffe as General Pancho
By Sage Satori
The Cinco De Murder dinner theatre
experience brings the audience a touch of
drama, loads of comedy, singing, dancing
and an outstanding meal, all in the charming
ambiance of the historic Oak Room at
Geneva on the Lake.
Cinco De Murder described as “Blazing
Saddles” gone Mexican, is the tale of two
sisters, April (Daisy Hall) and May (Sarah
Cantrell), who travel south of the border and
are reunited with their sister June (Joe
Jackson). April is a bit short of brain cells
but her hardnosed sister May can keep them
on the right path. The very robust and “big
boned” sibling, June, loses her beloved
Hector (Will Mortensen) to an ill-timed
death. This is where the mystery begins as
the cast of characters and the audience try to
figure out who has done this odious deed to
poor Hector.
Joe Jackson’s portrayal of June is a
definite highlight of the evening. His, I mean
Her, rendition of “Red Neck Woman” will
have the tears flowing and not because it’s
sad, it is laugh out loud funny. Fernando
(Sylvester Newel) portrays a “Festus” type
character who wanders drunkenly around the
town eavesdropping, befriending, and
befuddling all. His well timed one liners
along with the wide eyed, goofy expressions
are total amusement.
On the flip side is General Pancho Villa
(Michael Riffe) who smiles at nothing while
stomping around looking for his gold. The
only moments that he steps away from his
hardcore, stone-faced stare is when he sings
May 6 - 20, 2009
“Have You
Ever Really
Loved a Woman?” Other contemporary
songs make their way into this “Wild West”
setting through creative writing, outstanding
vocals, and buoyant choreographed dance.
Arriving late amidst the chaos is El Flaco,
the great bullfighter (Brook Collin Hall)
embracing a huge ego in his small stature.
He smiles throughout all his boasting,
making him somewhat likable but definitely
not trustable. Another seemingly untrustable
character is the quiet guy in the big hat,
Emilio (Tristan Kujanpaa) who sees a lot of
things from under that big hat. Mama Rosa
(Loraine Lash) sees things in other ways,
gypsy ways, so keep your tea leaves and ice
cubes to yourself.
The audience is seated in such a way that
the theatre surrounds the tables. The cast
pause the story to serve the guests each of
the six courses as it is prepared with upmost
care by Chef Michael Porchello and his staff.
In addition to the full bar, themed beverages
Joe Jackson as June sings “Breathe” hugging
her dying Hector played by Will Mortensen
that pair well with the entrees
are available to purchase. The
Jumbo Gold Margarita is an
superb choice to accompany the
Mexican flavors served during
Cinco De Murder. Treat yourself
to this great evening of
entertainment and dining and
watch for the “Comedy
Olympics” coming soon!

Joe’s Garage Lost in Overdale
You may be thinking, ‘Joe’s Garage’,
a Frank Zappa tribute band?’ Nope! This is
a bunch of talented guys who hung out and
made music in Joe Rominto’s garage. Hence,
the name! As Joe put it, “We usually
rehearsed till midnight and when we were
done we continued to party, listen to tunes
together, build huge fires, and hang out in the
hot tub with all our friends that
helped turn every Joe’s Garage
rehearsal into a concert.” It’s
apparent in the music that these guys
have a great chemistry in working
together. I would almost have to say
some tracks from this CD could be
used in a movie soundtrack. It was
just something I pictured while
listening to some of the cuts.
Opening track Salvatore, is an
upbeat contemporary pop sounding
tune with a notable signature lead,
mandolins and acoustic guitars. Next
is Sudden Glory which sounds like it could
deserve some radio play giving the feeling of
walking out on the beach with your girlfriend
(or boyfriend).
Title tune Lost in Overdale a power ballad
slows things down a bit with some hard
hitting reflective emotional lyrics. Skyrider
picks it up again with a fun tempo. I got to
say Michael J. Graehling is one busy
drummer holding things together especially
in this cut. Drive Another Day is a very
danceable tune with a clever key change.
What Will You Say changes things up with
a more countrified sound. It reminds me of
something Mark Knopfler would have
written. Next is a historical lesson about
Honest Abe with Abraham Lincoln. My
favorite cut on the CD is Trains. They work
the vocal harmonies well in the verses as
they do in the chorus. They better play this
one if I see them live. Closing out with It’s
Cuts Like That give a little self description
of Joe’s Garage.
There is multi talented musical versatility
in this band; Joe not only plays acoustic and
electric guitars, but also keyboards,
banjo and harmonica. Mark Kindler
plays banjo and mandolin in
addition to his electric and
acoustic, both have great
vocals as well. Bassist Jeff
Porcianco holds down the
foundation and proves to be a
perfect fit in the band even
though he was discovered by
accident.
To sum it up Lost in
Overdale is well arranged
with a contemporary pop rock
sound, fun up tempo beats
and some raw guitar leads. I
like how it has a light hearted
innocent format with a
driving force. I wouldn’t hesitate to put it on
the boom box at a summer picnic, any
outdoor party, or maybe just cruising around
with it blasting in your car with the top down.
The best advice I can give to Joe’s
Garage is to get out any play live gigs and
you’re likely to enjoy much success! If you
don’t have a manager to get you in the pubic
eye, get one. To find out how to pick up their
CD or to learn more about Joes Garage visit
their website at www.joesgarageband.net or

May 6 - 20, 2009
By Luthier Patrick Podpadec
I’m starting to write this article on
Sunday, April 26th. It is a beautiful day and I
was just outside playing my guitar for a
while.
Spring has sprung! We can all finally
remove our musical instruments from their
warm dry and
heated shelters, to the beautiful outdoors,
where personally, I think that music sounds
the best especially around the campfire. I
know that I like playing outdoors and do so
every time I get the chance. But of course
this also can bring on its own potentionaly
damaging effects.
Some of the obvious is the sun, rain,
campfire, little children that run by your
guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, etc… while it
is gently leaning up against the picnic table
or nearest chair, tree, or whatever, and of
course the friend that stumbled by while you
just got up to get yourself a beverage, or a
hotdog, or another bowl of potato salad or
baked beans. “I either love spring and
summer or I’m hungry while writing this
piece.”
Besides the things that can knock your
instrument over, there are other things that
should be considered. Try not to play in the
direct sunlight for long periods because the
tops on acoustic guitars, with their larger
May 6 - 20, 2009
mass and 200-250 lbs string pressure, can get
hot and start to loosen things up. I will admit
this usually only happens with extreme heat
but it can happen.
It’s possible for one of the internal braces
to warm up enough to release itself from the
top and then the next thing you know you
your top is
caving in or
maybe the
bridge starts
to raise up off
of the top and
raises the
action past the
point of good
playability.
And most
importantly,
NEVER,
NEVER,
leave your
instrument in
the car with
the windows
rolled up on a hot sunny day. This can and
will do some serious damage, even when it’s
in the case. I have seen necks come loose,
bridges come off, and braces pop off, or
come loose, cracks develop, etc…
When I want to remove something to
reposition it, like a brace, bridge, or neck, I
use heat or steam to do it. You can have your
car do it for you but, I’m sure that it won’t
return it to its proper location. I’m sure there
are times that you might have to leave your
instrument in a car or somewhere else .I just
suggest that it isn’t for a long period and that
you would try to park in the shade if at all
possible. Just remember that it’s made from
wood, and
wood moves
when
subjected to
temperature
and
humidity
changes,
especially
when it is
strung up
with all of
the string
tension.
I’m
trying to
relate the
many things
that you should be aware of so that your
instrument does not have any major
problems. The kind of problems that you
may be calling me, or someone else to repair
for you, which, depending on the severity
can be a bit costly. “Not that I don’t want
you to call me, I do.”
On the other hand, there are many small
www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999
fixes and general maintenance procedures
that you can do yourself for little or no
money at all. One good thing to do is, every
time that you change strings (which varies
widely amongst players) you should give
your instrument a thorough cleaning and
examination. I start with the head of the
guitar or any instrument and work my way
down . Check to see if the tuners are tight,
check the nut to see that the slots are not
worn excessively. Clean the fingerboard of
all its finger grime, look for any loose frets.
Check the saddle as you put your strings on
to make sure that it’s seated properly in the
bridge (not leaning forward too much).
Make sure that the bridge pins are pushed in
all the way, and look the instrument over very
good to see that no new cracks have possibly
started with out your approval! If you were
to find one, it is in your best interest to get it
repaired ASAP. Cracks of any kind generally
do not get smaller.
In the coming issues I will address a lot of
tricks I have learned through books,
seminars, experience, and other friends and
musicians that can keep you “Stay in Tune”.
So until then I bid you farewell and enjoy the
spring weather.
THANKS!

The Soloist
The new film The Soloist, starring
Jamie Foxx, Catherine Keener and Robert
Downey, Jr., was released nationwide on
Friday, April 24, and received rave reviews.
The movie is based on a true story of a
young Afro- American boy from Cleveland.
Nathaniel Ayers was a child music prodigy
who made it all the way to the prestigious
Julliard School of Music in New York but
Steve Lopez in 2005 is the basis for the film.
Young Nathaniel learned the string bass in
junior high school, and took lessons at the
Cleveland Music School Settlement with
Cleveland Orchestra member Harry Barnoff
until he graduated high school. “I remember
him practicing in the music school
while there were riots in Hough.
His mother owned a beauty salon
and encouraged him,” says
Barnoff, a 46-year veteran of the
Orchestra. The string bass lessons
along with learning classical music
made a big difference for Ayers
(played by Foxx). Passionate
about his music, Ayers was
awarded a scholarship to Ohio
University where he studied for
two years before attending
Julliard on a scholarship.
The rigors of Julliard were
demanding and intense, and
Nathaniel always wanted to
improve and do more.
Unfortunately, when he was 21-years-old, he
was hospitalized and diagnosed with
schizophrenia. Ayers returned to Cleveland
and hung out at Severance Hall. After they

got to know who he was, the staff would let
him in during intermission time to hear the
second half of concerts. Over the years he
had trouble staying on his medication and
ended up homeless, living on the street.
The other star of this story is Lopez
(played by Robert Downey Jr.), a journalist
working for the LA Times. With his own
personal problems, and looking for a new
story, Lopez found Nathaniel Ayers on the
streets of Los Angeles, playing string
instruments for spare change. Ayers was so
gifted as a musician that he was able to teach
himself how to play the cello and violin even
though the fingering and hand position were
different from a string bass. Through his
writing, Lopez brought Ayers’ story to light his love of music, his homelessness, and his
schizophrenia diagnosis. In response to these
columns about Ayers, people started donating
instruments to him, which he would promptly
learn to play. Due to Lopez’s efforts, Ayers
now lives in an assisted living apartment
where he has room for these instruments, and
a studio to teach music to students. He
actively plays ten different instruments.
Over two years ago, DreamWorks Studio
movie director Joe Wright came to Cleveland
to investigate the background about Ayers’s
story and spent three days interviewing his
old bass teacher, Harry Barnoff. The movie
takes some artistic license with the story,
depicting Barnoff as disheveled and unkempt
when in reality he always dressed in a sport
coat and tie to give music lessons. Nathaniel
Ayers is now 58 years old and living in Los
Angeles. His sister, Jennifer, is managing his
finances and the Nathaniel Anthony Ayers
Foundation in his honor to help the
artistically gifted mentally ill.
The Soloist is definitely worth seeing for
many reasons. It is a film of substance and
character and draws the audience into a life
of remarkable musical talent as Nathaniel
combats the mental illness demons. Foxx
smoothly adopts the subtle behavior changes,
irregular speech patterns, eye contact or lack
thereof, and intensity that makes him truly
believable as a gifted, homeless,
schizophrenic man. Downey, Jr. is a
conflicted, down and out journalist, who
finds his way out through his friendship with
Nathaniel Ayers. The road has a few bumps
along the way, but the two men finally get to
a comfortable place where they can accept
each other for who they are.
Adding to the film credibility, homeless
people are realistically pictured in the
background throughout most of ‘’The
May 6 - 20, 2009
Soloist’. Because the human elements, the
drama and emotion are strong, by the end of
the movie the audience is cheering for
Nathaniel Ayers, Steve Lopez, program staff
members, and homeless people. Cleveland is
briefly portrayed through early film footage
of neighborhood homes, industrial-looking
bridges, and a flaming car rolling across the
screen at night to signify the turbulent times
and race riots. The DreamWorks film crew to
Cleveland so they could get the feel of the
city, the character and the old architecture.
The movie captures that feeling, and with its
focus on mental illness and the power of
journalism, is extremely inspiring. The
Soloist is highly recommended for music
buffs, fans of Cleveland, and just about
anyone who
enjoys quality
entertainment.
“Cats on
Holiday”

Drew
Carey may
have hit the
big time but
he still
remembers
his bluecollar native
Cleveland roots. His production company
Reason.tv has chosen Cats on Holiday to
provide the soundtrack to the new “working
man/ blue collar” documentary they are
filming in Cleveland. The band’s
performance was filmed on Thursday April
30th at the Parkview Nite Club, one of
Clevetown’s premier blues venues.
Cats on Holiday member Denis Devito
was really excited about the date at the
Parkview. The documentary features
Cleveland artists that have eked out an
existence and actually “like it here”. They
were quite taken with the “working man/
blue-collar “ themes that are featured in
COH’s recordings and chose the horn driven
“Gotta Be Down” as the opening sound
track. They also filmed the band performing
“Butterball,” “Halloween,” “Walk Johnny,”
and “Workin Man.” The band played from
6:30-8:30, taking a break to do an interview,
then came back for a small set. The Parkview
is located just North of West 58th and
Detroit.(phone:216-961-1341). The bar has
great reasonably priced food and is one of
The Cat’s favorite places to gig. Local fans
were invited to attend the taping, with the
advice to “wear your good clothes, you
might be on camera.” http://

from bar rooms to outdoor festivals and
concerts over the last 6 years. Armed with an
arsenal of well-crafted original tunes and an
eclectic blend of party songs, it’s hard for
most listeners not to swing and sway. With a
constantly full itinerary, it’s easy to catch
these guys tearing up some bandstand around

Cruisin’ and Bluesin’ on the Strip
If you love the blues, Geneva-on-theLake is the place to be on Saturday, May
16th. The sleepy little resort village is
coming back to life with the beautiful Spring
weather, and makes a perfect destination for
a road trip. To usher in the season, the GOTL
will be hosting a “Cruisin‘ and

event,
with
antique
cars and
motorcycles
on display, and blues
music playing from
one end of the milelong entertainment
strip to the other.
Participating bars will
feature blues, swing,
and jazz-oriented
combos and bands
staggered throughout the
day, beginning in the
afternoon and swingin’
on til the wee hours of
the night. Scheduled entertainment at press
time includes:

Afro-Cleveland Orchestra
Patty and Adolf at Harpersfield Winery
continue their tradition of bringing new and
exciting blues acts to the Lake Erie/ Grand
River wine territory with the debut
performance of the Afro-Cleveland
Orchestra on Friday, May 8th, from 7:30 –
10:30 pm. This talented five-piece band
brings a blend of blues, jazz, and standards,
along with a heavy dose of funk! The group
is a reprised version of ACO, founded by
Rob Williams, one of Cleveland’s best
saxophone players, and their “secret
weapon” is the renowned Jackie Warren on
the keyboard.
Jackie, who hails from Calhan, Colorado,
is a fixture in the Cleveland musical
community for over fifteen years. Not only
does she perform solo, she plays with her
own trio, and also
shines in a big
band setting, like
the one she works
with at the Rock
and Roll Hall of
Fame. Ms.
Warren appears
regularly at
Nighttown Jazz
Club, Grog
Shop, and
House of
Swing. She
has gigged
with everyone from soul
singer Solomon Burke to bandleader Gerald
Wilson, from Clark Terry to the Cleveland
Jazz Orchestra. The talented pianist holds a
Bachelor’s in music from Oberlin and a
Master’s degree in classical piano from
Cleveland State University, and teaches at
Cuyahoga Community College. This reporter
has seen her in action and believe me, she
can funk it up like “nobody’s bizness.” If you
have not had the pleasure of hearing this lady
play the keys, you really need to experience
this show!
Harpersfield Winery is an estate winery,
producing highly acclaimed award-winning
wines, and featuring an eclectic menu of
lighter fare - appetizers, soups, and desserts.
Add to that the ambience of a French
farmhouse, outstanding entertainment, and an
outdoor patio with a great view of the
vineyards – what more can you ask for?

Tony Rio releases “Dance” with some heavy hitter
Nashville songwriters, May 21 at the Boneyard.
Tony Rio, has been hard at work again,
going back and forth to Nashville for the last
eight months to record his latest CD
“Dance.” Now that it is complete, Tony has
been traveling and promoting it. Tony tells
me he is working on The Freewheelin’ Tour
for later this year in conjunction with Iron
Cowboy Productions. “We have always
played at our home clubs, we can’t forget
where we came from”, Tony tells me, “but
this year we are starting to play more in the
Cleveland area. Our website is being
renovated so if you check out our myspace
page (www.myspace.com/tonyriorelentless)
you can check out all the tour dates. Later in
the summer Tony Rio and Relentless are
going to be a part of The North Coast Music
Festival. This is a three day 300 plus band
event in Cleveland. Of course if you don’t
want to wait that long, the CD Release Party
is right around the corner! This event will be
held at the Boneyard in Mayfield Heights. As
an added attraction, Chuck Collier, WGAR
99.5 radio legend and Country Music Hall of
Fame inductee for 2008, has graciously
agreed to host this can’t miss event. If you
would like a ticket you can either get them at
the door or if you email them, the band will
send you one or two tickets.
There’s a new edition to the band, David
Newcomb, who plays the keyboard. Tony
says “he is a fantastic singer too, and he
helped me write a song called, “The Letter”,
two years ago which was actually added to
the new CD at the last minute. “We have the
wonderful privilege of having Jodi Workman
as our manager for the last four years. That
helps us out tremendously. She is our band
mom! She is AWESOME!! Now we will be
working with Derek Smith, of Iron Cowboy
Productions, who will be organizing a tour,
other show dates and the marketing end of
things. We also have Melissa Russell, who is
helping out with the day-to-day operations.
“It’s always a dream, never a competition,”
says Tony, “getting my music to the fans is
#1 in my book! We write, we play, we write,
we play.” The goal in mind with all of this
hard work is getting a record deal with a
GREAT label who will allow Tony to be
who he is and write the songs and perform
them true to his music style.
Tony, let’s talk about Dance, the
new CD:
“One of the first songs I
ever wrote, “Luckiest Man”,
was originally on our very
first CD and it has been rerecorded and re-produced for
the new CD. We have a
wide variety of
songwriters on the
CD titled
“Dance”. Bob
Andrews, our
guitar player/
singer wrote
and co-wrote
many of the
songs. The title
cut, “Dance,”
was written by
Jeffrey Steele.”
You may
recognize
Steele from
being the BMI
Songwriter of
the Year for
2003, 2004,
2005, and 2006.
He has written
eight #1 hits
and over
twenty-five top
ten hits. Jeffrey

also penned the open-road, movin’ down-thehighway cut “Freewheelin’.” Dan Mitchell,
wrote, “If You’re Gonna Play in Texas, You
Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band,” and Billy
Davis helped produce the CD. Dan Mitchell
also wrote , “HillJack”, which is on the new
CD. These are some heavy hitter Nashville
songwriters! You can order the CD, “Dance”
and other merchandise from the new website,
on myspace, or just come to a live show and
pick one up. You can download the CD at
Dig station, CD Baby, or I-Tunes, soon to be
released.
As always it is so fun talking to this man
who just beams with boy charm and musical
charisma. Still a big kid himself and loving
what he does.
Make plans to hit The Boneyard in
Mayfield Heights in the early evening, May
21. If you have seen Tony’s show, well, I
don’t have to tell you how much fun you’re
gonna have, and if you haven’t well, what the
hell are you waiting for? The new CD is
loaded with talent and personal messages that
will hit home.
I had the personal pleasure of playing on
the Boneyard stage with my musical mentor
and friend Ted R. and the Marshall Band. I
can tell you one thing for sure, the
stage is one of the best I have
performed on. The
Boneyard sound staff
knows how to execute
incredible sound and
mixing in every way,
like true professionals.
The acoustics and stage
set-up are as good as it
gets. I have no doubt this is
going to be one Kickin’
It Country party! The
Boneyard is located
in Mayfield Hts,
with easy access
from Route 271
through Rt. 90 or
Rt. 480. It is at the
corner of Lander
and Mayfield
Roads.
Congratulations to
one of the one of
the hardest
working
musicians
around, Mr.
Tony Rio!
See y’all
there!!

By James Onysko
Many of us
who have reached a
certain age are
familiar with the
expression:
“There’s no such
thing as a free
lunch”. That
may or may not
be true
depending on
where you fall
in the social
pecking order
- from a wellheeled
financier
(whose
expense
account is
considered
some sort
of
entitlement) to the single,
urban Mom (struggling to meet
the bills while standing in the
breadline).
But what about a free
festival? What could that mean to
both of the above, and to their
quality-of-life? What kind of
economic generator can be kicked
into gear for a once-flourishing
region seemingly down on its luck?
Richard Florida, in his excellent book, “The
Rise of the Creative Class (and how it’s
transforming work, leisure, community &
everyday life” answers the question with a
resounding endorsement of what the arts can
mean to a city.
Think Ashtabula, Cleveland and Lorain
(not to mention Youngstown) - all beset by
hard times. Intuitively, we know any of these
places could benefit from a free event such
as what’s taking place for the 23rd time in
the modest-sized town of Belfort, France,
situated in the beautiful hills of Franche-
Comté (East of France) - south of the Alsace
region. It’s called Festival International de
Musqiue Universitaire - or simply, F.I.M.U.
(pronounced fee-moo). I have the privilege of
being their USA correspondent; and three
area acts (with ties to our region) have been
selected to be this year’s musical
ambassadors from America.
From May 29 through June 1, 2009, in the
old town of Belfort, F.I.M.U. (in partnership
with the students of UTBM (Technological
College of Belfort Montbéliard), and the
Town of Belfort, will organize and produce
the performances of over 130 musical groups
from nearly 35 countries - this year, for the
first time, welcoming musical formations
from Columbia, Israel and the South of
Africa. This does not include the many
spontaneous jams that will break out all over
the city - on the streets and in the pubs including the pre-festival concerts which take
place as musicians arrive into town.

and activities as it found them”. Now, more
than two decades later, some 2,500
musicians will offer a wide variety of music
genres. Classical, jazz, rock, traditional and
world music groups will generously display
their talents throughout the city center.
As Olivier Lambert, my liaison with
F.I.M.U., states: “What is important to say
about F.I.M.U., and what makes it
successful, and what creates its particular
mood of friendship is this: the concerts are
free and musicians come just to share their
music (as there is no fee). The audience
knows that, and is very grateful with groups.
There is no commercial relation between
musicians and audience. It creates a close
relationship between both. What’s more,
audiences can meet these musicians, and talk
to them very easily. It’s a cultural
experience, too, as audiences can discover
music they didn’t hear before - music from
everywhere in the world. For many people
who come, it’s their lone outing in the year.”
This principle makes for a festive
atmosphere; and the student and volunteer
dimensions make F.I.M.U. a special event.
Invitees are mostly made up of music
students and amateurs. In the French
meaning of the word, an amateur is one who
does something for the sheer love of it. No
lack of professionalism here - only worldclass talent. Herein lies a clue to the success
of a small idea, which has grown well into
adulthood, soon to celebrate its Silver

Anniversary in

years.
Take the

venues themselves
are also part of the
story (buildings or spaces whose everyday
uses are transformed by F.I.M.U.) - partly
due to their historic nature, but also suited to
artistic expression: Chapiteau Jazz (the Jazz
tent); L’Arsenal (the rock stage); Kiosque
(traditional stage in the round)Saint
Christophe (church ambiance); and so forth.
From the center of the old town of Belfort to
its protective fort on high (Citadelle), the
whole town becomes the festival. To
experience F.I.M.U. is to immerse yourself in
culture d’Monde, roaming centreville and
discovering the place.
I well expect for there to be a Golden
Anniversary, too, assuring the revelry of
festival-goers for years to come. “Eclectic,
intercultural and free”, F.I.M.U. welcomes
the world by pursuing its discovery of new
talent. Ask Tim Lane, drummer for
Cleveland Celtic rockers, Whiskey Island
Ramblers, about his experiences at F.I.M.U.
a few years ago; and he will tell you why
this type of festival works so
well:
“Belfort
is a
wonderful
place with an
intriguing
history. The wall
surrounding it gives
an encompassing
feel to the little
town. One big
reason why it’s a
great place for a

festival of music is that cultures merge well
in Belfort - it being in the midst of Western
Europe. Irish music was received well there
as is all world musics.
“The pilote (volunteer guide) was very
informative, making our adventure even
more interesting, as we felt comfortable
moving through the romantic town. Music
from another exotic country was around
every corner, up every hillside. I can
imagine this festival growing every year for it was run tightly from every angle. Good
sound guys at each stage, and pro gear for us

to play. Belfort is very
welcoming to the
entertainers that have
come a great distance to
perform the music of
their homeland”.
A little history of the old
town is in order. It is the capital of
Territoire de Belfort in eastern France on
the Savoureuse River. Habitation began in
Gallo-Roman times; and Belfort was first
recorded in the 13th century as a possession
of the counts of Montbéliard, who granted it
a charter in 1307. Because it controlled the
strategic Trouée (Gap) de Belfort,
between the Vosges mountains and the
Jura, the town was often besieged.
During World War I, it was
successfully defended by
the French, but occupied
by the Germans in World
War II.
Its fortified old quarter is
on the east bank of
the river.

meters) by 72 feet long (22 meters),
commemorating the 104-day siege of the
Franco-German War (1870–71). It is
considered the masterpiece of French
sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (18341904) - although he is more famous for Lady
Liberty (Statute of Liberty) - a gift from
France to mark the American Revolution.
There are two other Lady Liberty statutes one in Paris; and the other in Colmar where
Bartholdi was born, not far from Belfort.
Closer to home as part of the United
States Botanic Garden, there is Bartholdi
Park in Philadelphia; at its center stands the
famous Bartholdi Fountain, which
he created for the 1876
International Centennial
Exhibition in Philadelphia.
He was also working on
his design for the Statue of
Liberty at the same time. I
mention all of this to show our
connection to France; and now, in a smaller
way, musicians can benefit from my personal
good fortune as F.I.M.U.’s correspondent.
Much awaits this year’s representatives from
America; and I suspect that in 2009, they
will be particularly well-received, given
the Europeans’ love for Barack Obama.
Besides viewing the red sandstone
sculpture (Lion du Belfort), a symbol
of Belfort’s history and pride,
American groups will encounter a
welcoming audience garnered
from an estimated population of
around 60,000 music-loving souls.
Last year, attendees to the festival
were numbered to be around 75,000 coming from within Belfort as well as
from nearby towns (and countries) - an
increase from previous year’s estimates.
So what would a similar spectacle
bring to our depressed economy? Not just
in terms of the “multiplier effect” (meaning
creativity generating new economic activity
for a region), what can be gleaned from an
organization such as F.I.M.U.? How can
such a festival serve to enhance the
reputation of a city, making it a soughtafter destination - a place people WANT to
visit and experience?
The closest thing we have to F.I.M.U.
is the summertime Ingenuity Festival in
Cleveland; but it’s based on a different
model. Although not entirely free, the
cost is minimal; and its energy does
bring people
downtown to
savor the arts
(and spend their
money). Ingenuity
will take place for the
fifth time the weekend of
July 10-12 at
Playhouse
Square.
There is also
May 6 - 20, 2009
the free-to-attend Hessler Steet Fair (May
16-17), and the annual Parade the Circle
(June 13) - both happening around
University Circle near the Case Western
Reserve University campus. Except for
nearby vendors, neither of these events
generates the kind of economic activity that
Belfort enjoys with their much-loved
F.I.M.U. In fact, there have been
interruptions in the Hessler Street Fair
schedule due to money woes. And although
Parade the Circle takes a year of planning,
it’s over in a day. The French festival is a
four-day affair.
Previously-invited groups (to name only a
few) have included Lost State of Franklin
(country); Troubadours of Divine Bliss
(folk); Kassaba (world); The Original
Snakeboy (blues); and my band, Drumplay
(jazz), who performed in Belfort in 2002 and
2003. The following year, I became their
correspondent; and I am blessed to be able to
attend every year - sometimes performing
with other groups. My job is to make
American bands aware of the values which
F.I.M.U. promotes; and to bring musical
ensembles that are “uniquely American” to
the attention of festival organizers. Inquiries
can be made to me at the following email
address: [email protected].
Want to go? Flight fares to Europe are at
an all-time low; and there is still time to get
your passport should you wish to attend. Go
to www.fimu.com for more information. If
that is not possible for you, dear reader, then
consider coming to the Sandy Chanty, 5457
Lake Road in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio,
over the Memorial Day weekend - as that
venue will host a “Friends of F.I.M.U.” sendoff party for Austin Walkin’ Cane (May 23),
and the Smokin’ Fez Monkeys (May 24).
Although the Elliptical Ferns will not be
performing this weekend, their new CD
(entitled “Reminiscent of the Future”) will be
played between sets.
From their MySpace site, the Ferns
describe their music: “Some descriptions of
the circular rhetoric of Al Sistani and other
religious leaders throughout the world, talk
about the open, double meanings of their
speech. The economy of words, the sleight of
hand in meaning...everything isn’t black and
white...hence the “Elliptical Terms”
description. The way jazz musicians play is
the art of camouflage...obscure the form,
play over the bar, move into the open
interpretation of melody, substitute
chords...grooves...effects... instant
connection to the dance...blur the black dots
on the page and remember the poetry of
conversational dialogues...hence Elliptical
Ferns”.
Sound interesting? Come see (and hear)
for yourself. An added bonus? It’s free, too.

“I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke”,
“Can you Hear Me Now”, “My Baloney
Has a First Name…”, They are the
marketing slogans that everyone
remembers, the commercials you talk to
your friends about. They are the reason
that most of America watches the Super
Bowl. But the Commercials you love have
to start somewhere. My name is Dave
Hatfield, and I am the Commercial
Production Director for the Media One
Group. I make radio spots for our 5
Northeast Ohio Stations (Star 97.1, Oldies
102.5, The Fox 107.5, 98.3 The Bull, &
ESPN 970 WFUN). It’s in my head that
many of the characters you’ve heard in
commercials live. Basically, I’m locked in
a little sound proof room, far away from
anyone else in the building, and
all day, I cultivate the ideas and
stories that become the
commercials you hear on the
radio.
Commercials shape our spending
habits. They tell us what to buy, and
when the best time is to buy it. If you own
a business, customers are your life blood.
It’s advertising that makes sure those
customers know who you are and what you
do. Even the smallest commercial run, can
work wonders for you business.
Remember, if you have a business, and are
not advertising, you might as well be
invisible. It’s Commercials that bring you
into the light, and allow your potential
customers to see you.
Will we get a championship in
Cleveland?
We have got a case of Cavaliers fever in
Northeast Ohio since Halloween and
nobody wants a cure until June. I am
Jeremy James from Oldies 102.5. The staff
and I are very proud to be your FM home of
Cleveland Cavaliers basketball. There is
nothing like listening to Joe Tate on a crisp
FM signal like Oldies 102.5 and when
Lebron James slams it home or Mo
Williams hits another three ball, you can be
sure we will be with you every step of the
way. It doesn’t matter if you’re a big sports
fan; The Cavs and Cleveland are super
excited to continue the playoff push. Many
people that I have talked to both watch the
games on TV and turn the sound off and
tune in to Joe Tate and listen to the Cavs
and watch them at the same time.
No matter how you slice it, the Cavs and
Oldies 102.5 are a great fit.

DAC has always been known for
his ability to defy categorization. But one
category that has always shown his strongest
quality is as a “Songwriter”. As a lyricist
David should be categorized right up there
with Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and John
Lennon. They are from different genres of
music but linked through the brilliance or
words.
David was born in Akron, Ohio and has
been his own man since he was a child. He
became familiar with several of Ohio’s
correctional institutions starting from the age
of 9. He emerged a fully formed adult who
had taught himself to play guitar and then

left for
the free
world.
DAC
had a
clear eye on
what his future
was to be; he decided to take the country
music world by storm. And though he had to
claw, hype and charm his way up the ladder,
his talent pulled him through. His ability to
feed the press juicy stories and tales of his
misdeeds didn’t hurt either.
Around the time of his first album release
(Penitentiary Blues) in 1971, stories of his
prison days and teaching a young Charles
Manson to play guitar fed the flames and got
his music and name out among the masses.
He was a tireless self-promoter; something
that still serves him well to this day. Much
has been written about David’s past and his
lifestyle but not much about his
achievements over the years.
With nearly three decades of following
his musical muse wherever it’s led, this
outlaw has crossed the panorama of
American roots music. As well as
being a singer,
songwriter, and
guitarist, David
is also a
magician, deep
sea treasure
hunter and movie
star. His movies
include
“Stagecoach”,
“The Last Days of
Frank and Jessie
James”. “Lady
Grey”, “Buckstone
County Prison” and
“Take This Job and
Shove It” to mention
a few. Other must
mentions on DAC’s
list of
accomplishments is
his performance to benefit Farm Aid and the
tours with Neil Young, Kid Rock and Willie
Nelson.
DAC seems to thrive on controversy and
it was almost always part of the game. Coe
recorded two albums in 1978 and 1982
containing racist and misogynistic lyrics of
extreme vulgarity and racial crudity:
“Nothing Sacred” and “Underground
Album.” Also available is a best of the Xrated albums compilation entitled “18 XRated Hits”. Coe has defended the songs
(such as one deriding an adulterous wife
who leaves her white husband and children
for a black man as a “Nigger F*****r” in a
song of that name) as bawdy fun which
never made him much money as well as
pointing out that his drummer at the time
was black. This has also led to confusion
regarding offensive works by other artists,
especially Johnny Rebel, whose songs are
often mistakenly attributed to Coe. Coe’s
second album, the psychedelic concept
album Requiem for a Harlequin, contains
many strong anti-racist and pro-civil rights
statements. One track describes the birth of
soul music in a celebratory style; others are
furious rants against the KKK and what he
calls “the asphalt jungle”. Another track
entitled “F**k Anita Bryant” rants against
Anita Bryant for her opposition to
homosexuality.
His “Greatest
Hits Album” is
Platinum and his
“First Ten Years
Album” is Gold.
He has had
sixty-three
songs on the
Billboard
Singles Charts,
including
“Mona Lisa
Lost Her
Smile”, “The
Ride”, “Please
Come to
Boston”,
“Willie,
Waylon and
Me”, “Jack
Daniels If You
Please”, “You Never Even Call Me By My
Name” to name a few. He has written songs
for Johnny Paycheck, Tanya Tucker, George
Jones, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Charlie
Louvin, Del Reeves, Tammy Wynette,
Melba Montgomery, Stoney Edwards, The
Oakridge Boys and Kid Rock. Both “Would
You Lay With Me” and “Take This Job and
www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999
Shove It” are million seller
songs penned by David. Johnny Cash
recorded David’s songs including “Would
You Lay With Me” on his current chart
topping album entitled “CASH”. He
performs both Country and Rock shows
depending on the venue.
A collaboration between Pantera members
and DAC produced the aptly named Rebel
Meets Rebel. The album features; David
Allan Coe - Vocals, Guitars, Dimebag Darrell
- Guitars, Backing vocals, Rex Brown –
Bass, and Vinnie Paul – Drums. It is
described as “outlaw country” and placed #
38 on Billboard’s Top 200 and #3 on the Top
Independent Album charts. The album was
recorded while members had time off from
tours 1999 – 2003. Rebel Meets Rebel was
released on May 2, 2006, under Vinnie Paul’s
own label Big Vin Records, posthumously
after Dimebag Darrell’s murder in 2004.
David is an entertainer and as he brings
his show to The Cove on Sunday, May 24

execute another outstanding demonstration of
his talent.

~ Continued from page 10
Saturday Nite Mojo has released their
debut CD Neighborhood Sweetie . When
I kept hearing their cut Just the Way We Like
It on the North Coast Lix show, I wondered
when it was coming out. Saturday Nite
Mojo is four guys who come from different
musical backgrounds. Each member brings
his own unique style to the band in the
genres of Blues, Rock, and Southern Rock
just to name a few. This album contains
songs that were individually written by each
member as well as collectively written songs
by the
band.
Let’s
meet the
band;
Denny
Kilsuric
guitar and
vocals
from
Parma has
been
playing
guitar since
1981. Joe
Piete guitar
and vocals
has been
playing his
axe since age
14. Drummer
Ed Durma became interested in the Blues
when he was 5 years old. He’s started
playing drums when he was 9. Last but not
least, bassist “Plain Ole Ray ” Fisher first
picked up the bass in the summer of 1970.
Forming out of the band The Porkchops, they
began writing their own material and became
Saturday Nite Mojo .
Starting out with the title tune
Neighborhood Sweetie about a hot girl they
all knew back in high school they never had
a chance with but now she is ready to ‘rock
and roll.’ It’s got a driving lick that was
inspired by Hendrix. I Ain’t Lying is a gritty
blues shuffle intros with fuzz guitar leads
and sounds like Cream meets George
Thorogood. Fool No More a slow blues with
a positive outlook when none seems apparent
in the short term. Some cool slide guitar
leads in this one.
Boston is a minor key rocking Blues singing
out to a lost love he can’t forget. Nobody
Got Dem Blues is a shuffling blues that’s
doesn’t discriminate anyone getting the blues
in severe fashion. Ashtabula Blues a slow
blues about a bank not loaning out any
money because
they thought the
guy wanting to
borrow was his
dead father.
Only in
Ashtabula,
right? Time to
pack your bags
and get out.
The last
couple of songs
were
collectively
written by the
band. Old
Black Moe has
got a really
cool galloping
beat and some
amusing
dialogue in the middle of the song. The
guitar work in this one displays some nice
light touches. The final tune Never Givin Up
is a rocking instrumental which was
described as The James Gang meets The
Allman Brothers. That’s actually a good
analogy. I’ll bet that’s a real crowd pleaser.

Well, I guess star power is as big a draw
as ever. One might assume that with all the
press all the ads and all the publicity about
diva Beyonce Knowles that OBSESSED
would seem like a one-woman show.
Truth be told, if not for her high profile
musical career she’d probably have been
listed in the part of the credits where they
start with the two or three per page listings.
In this, or any other run of the mill stalker
flick the wife (or dad or…) is an afterthought
to the psycho or the victim.
That’s how it is here too. The stars are the
smoking hot Ali Larter as Lisa the lunatic
and Idris Elba as Derek the object of her
affection. Derek’s some sort of hotshot
executive who appears to be blissfully happy
in his marriage to slightly overbearing
Sharon (Beyonce). She’s kind of a
combination of Clair Huxtable and Aunt
Esther.
So the story goes like this, Lisa shows up
at the generic big city office, lo and behold,
as Derek’s own temporary personal assistant.
In the days following, one by one the office
employees come down with flu like
symptoms and Lisa moves from desk to desk
though never far from her prey. However her
best efforts to lead our hero into temptation
fall short. This guy is just not buying. Scenes
include an interlude in the men’s room at the
Christmas party and a semi nude episode in
the parking lot that would have most normal
men in the back seat quicker than a beer can
at a DUI checkpoint. Not Charles. As a
matter of fact guys, the term P.W. comes to
mind if you know what I mean. That actually
makes things even less believable as he
grovels and begs over situations in which he
was truly innocent. Hey at least Michael
Douglas got laid in FATAL ATTRACTION.
As the film rolls on the clichés get more and
more outrageous. Christine Lahti returns to
the screen as a completely befuddled police
officer. Actually I think that role is required
by law to appear in every stalker movie.
At any rate the law fails and the wife
takes matters into her own hands for the
predictable climax. Her dialogue sounds like
out takes from Mr. T’s ROCKY 3 script.
I did wonder about a couple things. First
would this movie see the light of day in
today’s politically correct atmosphere had
the races been reversed?
Also, though she was admittedly a huge
pain in the ass, did Lisa really do anything
serious enough to warrant the final scene?
Maybe a more vicious villain would have
cost them the PG 13 and the
Beyonce fans’ allowance money.

X MEN ORIGINS:
WOLVERINE
Fox • PG 13 • 107 min
As you might know I grew
up a DC (Superman, Batman
etc) comics fan so I’ve not
been immersed in the history
of the Marvel group, which
includes, among many
others, Iron
Man, The Hulk,
Spiderman and
X Men.
I did talk to
some
aficionados last year who were completely
pissed off about the ending of last years
offering in this saga.
Apparently somebody got the message and
decided to give Hugh Jackman’s popular
Wolverine character his own flick.
Well that angle has worked out well at the
box office and on the screen as well.
I’ve liked the entire X Men film series and
WOLVERINE may be my favorite so far.
You must admit that Wolverine himself is
pretty cool. Marvel heroes tend to be either
whiners (Spiderman) or tough bastards like
this guy.
www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999
He’s a nearly ageless
mutant who besides the usual
superhuman abilities can shoot
those deadly Edward
Scissorhands blades out of his knuckles. He’s
one of many super guys that the military has
targeted for induction into an extraordinary
fighting force. Well our boy can’t abide the
immorality the job requires. His brother, on
the other hand, is just fine with whatever
dastardly acts he’s asked to perform and
therein, my friends, lies the rub.
The rift between the boys reaches a point of
no return and the plot expertly winds and
twists through many episodes of deceit and
action.
Here, everything you’d need to make a
superhero flick is top notch.
May 6 - 20, 2009
The characters are vivid, the story intriguing,
and the fighting and effects outstanding.
There’s no cheap dialogue and no explosions
for their own sake.
And the violence is balanced; just rough
enough to excite without pushing the rating
to an R.
Now if you recall, I’m not familiar with
many of the Marvel characters so after each
flick I try to find someone who’s a fan of the
books to see just how true to the original the
film version is.
This time it was a fellow named Nick. While
he agreed with me that as a stand-alone
motion picture it was done well, as a fan of
the seminal work, he was annoyed by the
liberties taken with the basic characters.
That’s understandable.
I know how cranky I get when directors
put a wig on Lex Luthor. It’s almost like a
film version of the Bible in which the hero
escapes at the last scene. Hmmm I suppose
He does when you stop and think about it,
but you get the idea.
As a film I thought it was first class. As a
strict interpretation of the books, Nick says it
falls short. It’s your call folks, but I give it:

Oh You Little
Mother…
Well it’s that time again; no I’m
not going into my rant about spring
cleaning again, even though I DO seem
to have accumulated as much, if not
more stuff than I got RID of last year!
It’s kind of creepy… it’s like it just
appears every spring and then we have
to deal with it all over again!
No, I’m referring to Mother’s Day
and lucky for you I’m forewarning you
now so you can get out there and do
whatever it is you’re supposed to do for
your mother. And you better do it right
or she’ll send you straight to your room!
It was sad when my neighbor told
me that his mother died over the winter.
I said “Wow… did she hate winter that
much?” He just looked at me as if I was
some kind of an idiot, then smiled and
said “You’re an idiot!” (I get that a lot!)
“But Mom would have liked you.”
Now I realize that not everybody’s
mother is still living. So you’re going
to have to improvise… I’ll rent you
mine for $10! Hey for another $5 I’ll
throw in my Pops too! They’re a
HOOT!
Now last year my Mother warned me
never to write an article that included
her. So being the good son that I am
guess what I’m doing!
That’s right MOM, not only did I
include you in this article, I even wrote
you a song! Feel free to sing this to
your mom wherever she is!
Think of the “Smothers Brothers” on
“Laugh In” when singing this! Ok,
Everybody Lets Sing!
Someday you will thank me,
For all this crazy stuff!
First verse:
Boom-pa Boom-pa-Boom-pa-Boompa…
I’m a big boy now you darling,
And I don’t want you to fret,
When I wake up in the morning,
My bed’s no longer wet!
I no longer have to go to school,
So leave my ears alone,
You may think that it’s so cool,
To twist them to the bone!
Oh you little mother,
You’re only three feet tall,
You’re not like any other,
As you waddle down the hall!
You think that you can spank me,
You think that you’re so tough,
Someday you will thank me,
For all this crazy stuff!
Second verse:
Boom-pa Boom-pa-Boom-pa-Boompa…
I wish you still baked cookies,
I wish you still baked bread,
I glad you shaved your goatee,
But not about your head!
No longer can you chase me,
No longer can you strut,
Slower than a snail you be,
No taller than my butt!
Oh you little mother,
You’re only three feet tall,
You’re not like any other,
As you waddle down the hall!
The chorus:
Boom-pa Boom-pa-Boom-pa-Boompa…
You think that you can spank me,
You think that you’re so tough,
Someday you will thank me,
For all this crazy stuff!
Oh you little mother,
You’re only three feet tall,
You’re not like any other,
As you waddle down the hall!
Just brings a tear to my eye!
Happy Mother’s Day to all you little
Mothers!
You think that you can spank me,
You think that you’re so tough,
