Program Holland@CERN
Holland@CERN and CERN@Holland! As you have probably noticed, the Netherlands has a new government. One of the main priorities of the new coalition agreement is ‘innovation’, because - I quote – ‘strengthening the innovative power of industry is vital to future economic development. Good cooperation between industry, knowledge institutions, and government is of great importance. The relationship between knowledge, science, applied research and innovation policy will be strengthened.’ To this end the new government has even created a new Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, which is sponsoring Holland@CERN. But that is about government. Most important for innovation are of course enterprises, academic and research institutions. Like the highly qualified 28 Dutch companies now attending this hightech exposition at CERN. A compliment to Nikhef - and my good friend Jos Engelen! - Stichting FOM/Plasmafysica Rijnhuizen and Dutch Scientific! CERN is one of the largest and most respected research institutions in the world. It has an outstanding academic and scientific reputation in particle physics. Achievements such as the discovery of W and Z bosons, the first creation of antihydrogen atoms and the discovery of direct CP-violation are direct results of experiments at CERN. CERN produced several Nobel Prize winners in physics – including three Dutchmen. Nowadays, we can all learn about such achievements on the World Wide Web – which started as a CERN project. For enterprises looking for innovative opportunities, CERN is certainly a place to be. So my advice to you: bring Holland to CERN and CERN to Holland. A win-win! I would like to welcome all participants to this exposition. And please do not hesitate to knock on my door in Geneva or call upon my colleagues in Bern or the ministry in The Hague if we can assist you. Boudewijn J. van Eenennaam Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva Fundamental science and business Holland, the Netherlands, was one of the signatories of the intergovernmental agreement by which CERN was founded in 1954. So in that sense: Holland is at CERN since 1954. There is, however, every reason to welcome this event, Holland@CERN, in 2010. The fundamental science pursued at CERN is aimed at pushing back the boundaries of knowledge. That has happened successfully in the past and the Large Hadron Collider, in operation since October 2009, holds great promises for the future. At CERN pushing back the boundaries of knowledge implies pushing back the boundaries of technology. A similar observation can be made for the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, also involved in the organisation of this event. And this provides a natural connection between fundamental scientific research and innovative private enterprises: they need and can reinforce each other. Researchers define what they need – processors, fast electronics, light and strong materials, high current density superconductors, ultra high vacuum, sophisticated cryogenics, etc., etc. – and (common) R&D projects lead to the desired products, sometimes to immediate ‘business’ for the private party, sometimes to new products that bring benefits at a longer timescale. And of course there are also examples where high-tech advanced products are already available: also in that case an event like Holland@CERN can be very useful in bringing parties together. The ‘knowledge economy’ on which European, so also Dutch, wealth and well being will be based to an ever greater extent can only flourish if there is an open and lively innovation system. In such a system public and private R&D, researchers and private enterprises need to be in constant and constructive contact. May this event contribute to that contact! Jos Engelen Chairman of NWO, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research Abstracts Harald Reichert: Upgrade plans ESRF (9 November 16:30 Auditorium) "At the Holland@CERN event, Harald Reichert represents Francesco Sette, Director General of the ESRF. A physicist who spent a major part of his career at the Max-Planck-Institute for Metal Research, Harald took office as one of two Directors of Research at the ESRF on 1 January 2009. His presentation on the ESRF Upgrade Programme will outline the four components of this 180 million Euro capital investment over 7 years (2009-2015), which will keep the ESRF at the forefront of synchrotron science worldwide: improvements to the accelerator complex, expanded experimental halls, development of eight new Upgrade Beamlines to enable new science, and advances in instrumentation. In line with the audience, his presentation will focus on the technological challenges of instrumentation, including data processing, and new beamlines." Jean-Michel Georgoux: ESRF purchasing service (9 November 16:00 Auditorium) The ESRF is funded by 19 member countries and scientific associates, but has its legal foundation as a private company operating under French law. Jean-Michel Georgoux is Head of the ESRF Purchase Service. His presentation will outline ESRF Purchasing rules and the main ESRF Purchasing sectors. He will give details on how to do business with the ESRF in practical terms. Thierry Lagrange: CERN purchasing procedures (9 November 16:00 Auditorium) At the foundation of CERN there was determined that all the goods and services will be obtained from the member states. To provide a level playing field the Purchase Department handles the procedures involved. The head of the Finance and Procurement Department, Thierry Lagrange is responsible for these procedures and will reveal its secrets. Wim Bras: 10 Years DUBBLE (9 November 17:45 Auditorium) The Dutch Belgian BeamLines at the ESRF have been officially operational since 5/6/2000. In June 2010 the 500th publication with data from these beam lines appeared. The DUBBLE project consists of two beam lines which use ESRF bending magnet radiation to perform different X-ray scattering and spectroscopy techniques. The beam time available for Dutch and Belgian users is complementary to the beam time available on the public ESRF beam lines. The main techniques in use on the beam lines are Small- and Wide Angle X-ray scattering and Xray absorption spectroscopy. Both these techniques find a wide range of applications in the Dutch- Belgian research community. This ranges from very applied research like the structure evolution in plastic films during the production of garbage bags to very fundamental work on density fluctuations in undercooled water. But also biologically interesting subjects like the structure of different spider silks under tension or pure physics in the form of the deformation of crystalline structure under 30 Tesla magnetic fields. In the presentation a brief introduction to the beam lines and history will be given. This will be followed by several examples for which not only the experiment but also the scientific context is understandable for the interested lay-person. Roger Ruber: The CLIC accelerator (9 November 17:45 Auditorium) Roger Ruber was born on the 20th of July 1966 in Grevenbicht, thirty kilometers north of Maastricht in the Netherlands' province of Limburg. After passing through Dutch secondary school (HAVO and VWO), he studied applied physics at the Technische Hogeschool Eindhoven. After his graduation in 1991 he acquired a one year grant from the Japanese Ministry of Education (Monbusho) to study detector magnet systems at the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics (KEK). After returning to Europe he took up research at the Department of Radiation Sciences at Uppsala University on the WASA detector set-up for meson rare-decay studies. In 1997 he passed his engineering licentiate degree specializing in the development of superconducting magnets and was offered a research engineer position at Uppsala University. In 1999 he was offered a senior research engineer position at the The Svedberg Laboratory (TSL) and was promoted the same year to a technical doctorate degree in physics at Uppsala University. In 2000 he was invited to spend a sabbatical year as visiting scientist at KEK. A year after returning to Uppsala, he was asked to become on-site project coordinator for the installation and commissioning of the ATLAS detector’s Central Solenoid at CERN. This work, in parallel with development of instrumentation for the ATLAS Toroid magnets was completed in 2006 with the successful commissioning of the Central Solenoid and Barrel Toroid. Since then he is active at Uppsala University on the development of the CLIC and ESS accelerator. Now Roger is strongly involved in the CLIC project, the future of accelerators. ECM is a non conventional metal machining technology based on electrolysis. Turnover: 1 – 1,2 M€ 5 employees Product information ECM Technologies develops electrochemical machining processes for metal products of complex geometry (i.e. Turbine blades) that can hardly or not at all be made by conventional machining processes. The ECM technology is very suitable for products of super alloys even in large series. Characteristics of the ECM process: • The product after processing is free of burrs • No-contact process principle, no mechanical forces • The process does not cause thermal or physical strain in the product • Unlike other machining techniques, no upper-layer deformation occurs • 3-Dimensional products can be processed in one single step • High surface quality level attainable (Ra < 0,02 µm) depending on material used • High dimensional accuracy attainable • Material strain which loosens during the process will be compensated where possible • Stainless steels are affected by various conventional machining techniques in the upper-layer, as a result of which local rust formation can occur. This is not the case with ECM • Using the ECM technique generates more freedom in design for a product • ECM is a technique with a high machining speed at relatively low costs. Different technology transfer modes are used to allow the access to CERN technology by industry. These include contracted and collaborative research, service and consultancy and the licensing of intellectual property. The presentation will describe CERN technological domains, the technology transfer modes, provide for examples of available technologies and business opportunities as well as a successful case of transfer from High Energy Physics to the X-ray material analysis instrumentation market. Lucie Linssen: The CLIC study of a Multi-TeV Linear Collider (10 November 9:30 Council Chamber) The talk presents the CLIC accelerator and detector studies. A future multi-TeV electron-positron collider will be the best tool to complement and extend the physics discovery reach of the LHC. To this aim R&D is currently carried out on the Compact LInear Collider (CLIC) technology and its physics detector concepts. CLIC is based on a novel two-beam acceleration with very high acceleration fields (up to 100 MV/m), allowing to reach collision energies of 3 TeV in an accelerator complex of some 48 km length. The technology is developed by a large international collaboration and uses several accelerator test facilities worldwide, among which the CTF3 test facility at CERN. The results of more than two decades of R&D are currently being laid down in a Conceptual Design Report. The present status and principal results of the R&D will be presented together with plans for the upcoming technical design phase. Germana Riddone Fabrication of CLIC RF structures and components (10 November 10:00 Council Chamber) The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) study is focused on the design of an e- e+ linear collider at colliding beam energy of 3 TeV with a luminosity of 2·1034 cm-2 s-1. CLIC is based on the innovative two-beam acceleration scheme, in which the RF power is extracted from a low energy but high-intensity drive beam, and transferred to a high energy accelerating beam, called main beam. The accelerating structures of the main beam operate at 11.9942 GHz with an accelerating gradient of 100 MV/m. The two linacs (each about 21 km) are equipped with two-beam modules, housing all the main RF and focusing components. To fulfil the CLIC requirements, the different parts of the RF structures should be fabricated and aligned with a precision of few microns. The presentation focuses on the engineering and fabrication issues of the RF structures and RF components. The main steps of the fabrication process, including machining, surface treatment, alignment and bonding, are reviewed together with the present achievements. This challenging work in carried out in collaboration with several international industrial partners and institutes. Special effort is still required to enlarge the market and qualify new European companies. The talk ends with the presentation of the future CLIC needs and perspectives for industrialization and mass production coming phases. Roland Garoby: Plans for the Upgrade of the LHC Injector Complex (10 November 11:00 Council Chamber) An accelerator complex made-up of 2 linacs and 4 synchrotrons (Linac2, Linac3, LEIR, PS Booster, PS and SPS) is being used to provide proton and heavy ion beams to the LHC. These accelerators, which were designed and built many decades ago, have been modified to meet the needs of the Collider (the oldest one being the PS, which accelerated beam to high energy for the first time in 1959). Until now, they have performed excellently and with a remarkable flexibility. Extensive consolidation will however be mandatory for reliable operation until ~2030 (the expected end of life of the LHC), in combination with major upgrades to allow for pushing the LHC performance as well as its discovery reach as far as possible. The technical solutions for the upgrade will be defined and implemented before ~2017 in the frame of the “LHC Injectors’ Upgrade” (LIU) Project. Large investments will have to be made in many different types of equipment (RF, kickers and pulsed high voltage systems, power converters, magnets, etc.). The three major fields of my activity at CERN are: The optimisation of the new LINAC 4 accelerator, which is under construction at the moment, The upgrade study for the LHC interaction regions to improve the collision rate Teaching activities in Accelerator physics. The theoretical part of my work is related to the behavior of charged particle beams in the magnetic fields of an accelerator, and the specification of the magnet field quality in our storage rings. Mainly the layout of new machine structures (so-called magnet-lattices) and the influence of their (multipole-) field errors on the particle stability is my daily work. Bernhard Holzer: LHC-Upgrade (10 November 11:30 Council Chamber) The presentation gives a short introduction to the layout of the LHC, its main components and the corresponding parameters of the colliding particle beams. The key aspect - the so-called luminosity of the collider - reflects the collision rate of the two beams. It is besides the particle energy the most important parameter and at the same time the focus of the actual machine operation and the LHC upgrade program at CERN. The luminosity will be discussed in detail and its design goal will be compared to the present machine performance. Based on these considerations we will present the concepts that are studied at CERN to increase the particle collision rate: what do we have to do, to improve the luminosity? What are the new technical challenges that we face and which are the efforts in research and technical development that will be needed to reach the goal: Key words are new s.c. magnet design (Nb3Sn technology) to achieve large aperture / high gradient magnets, additional or more effective He-cooling, transverse deflecting rf cavities ("crab" cavities) to overcome the geometric luminosity reduction factor and the increase of the single proton bunch intensity by more effective acceleration in the pre-accelerator chain. I am working in the group of accelerator physicists that describes theoretically the behaviour of charged particle beams in storage rings. The understanding of the main beam parameters of LHC and other operating machines at CERN, as well as the improvement of their performance is presently a top issue for us. In addition we are responsible for the design of new accelerator projects.
