Dear Sir,
I have been asked to write a letter of support for the EVENT project and its request for an
ERC advanced grant.
ANTARES is an international collaboration of many European laboratories that have
constructed a deep-sea neutrino telescope located in the Mediterranean Sea, 42km offshore
from the town of Toulon in the south of France. It comprises an array of 900 optical modules
attached to detector lines fixed on the seabed. An angular resolution better than 0.3 degrees on
the direction of the incident neutrino is achieved allowing precision neutrino astronomy to be
performed.
ANTARES has implemented an important multi-messenger program looking for neutrinos
correlated with other cosmic messengers (optical, gamma-rays, cosmic-rays). In particular, we
have the TAToO project, in which ‘special’ neutrino events produce triggers that are sent to a
number of fast robotic optical telescopes around the world. The optical images are then
studied searching for transient optical sources such as GRBs and Supernovae, which are
potential sources of neutrinos. Since 2009 we have generated triggers for the ROTSE,
TAROT, SKYMAPPER and ZADKO optical telescopes. The neutrino triggers are based on
doublets of two neutrinos within 3 degrees and 15 minutes or a single high-energy neutrino
(E>5 TeV). The neutrino alert is generated in less than 20 seconds and has an angular
precision on the neutrino direction less than 1 degree. Typically we generate about 1 alert per
month.
The addition of the EVENT network of robotic telescopes will be of great interest for our
physics program, especially considered that the ROTSE telescopes are soon to be
decommissioned. The timescale of EVENT matches well the planned operation of the
ANTARES (until at least 2016). After 2016 the next generation neutrino telescope, KM3NeT,
will come online and will also want to make use of the EVENT telescopes.
In summary then, the EVENT proposal matches a clear need for neutrino telescopes such as
ANTARES, IceCube and KM3NeT to search for transient optical sources correlated with
neutrinos. The ANTARES and KM3NeT Collaborations will certainly provide neutrino
triggers and provide the manpower to analyse any optical images associated to these triggers.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Paschal Coyle (Director of research-CNRS, ANTARES Spokesperson)

About the Kodak KAF-16803 Sensor...
The KAF-16803 image sensor is a redesigned version of the popular KAF-16801E image sensor (4096 x 4096 pixel
resolution) with enhancements that specifically target the needs of high performance digital radiography applications.
Improvements include enhanced quantum efficiency for improved DQE at higher spatial frequencies, lower noise for
improved contrast in areas of high density, and anti-blooming protection to prevent image bleed from over exposure
in regions outside the patient. Utilizing Kodak's proprietary single gate ITO process and micro-lens technology, the
KAF- 16803 image sensor with its large imaging area and small pixel size provides the sensitivity, resolution and
contrast necessary for high quality digital radiographs. To simplify device integration, the KAF-16803 image sensor
uses the same pin-out and package as the KAF-16801E image sensor.
From the intricacies of microscopy to the far reaches of astronomy, KODAK Full Frame CCD image sensors deliver
high performance results. With outstanding quantum efficiency across the visible spectrum, these sensors are ideal
for demanding imaging applications that can accommodate a mechanical shutter or strobe illumination, such as
electronic still photography, medical X-ray, and inspection.
Kodak KAF-16803 Imaging Sensor Features
High Resolution - Large Image Area - High Quantum Efficiency
Low Noise Architecture - Broad Dynamic Range
Digital radiography, Astronomy and Life Sciences Applications
Horizontal Outputs 1 - Saturation Signal 100 K e- - Output Sensitivity 22 µV/eDark Signal (T=25°C) 3 e/pix/sec - Dark Current Doubling Temperature 6.3° C

Assembled in a state-of-the-art facility, Andor’s UltraVac™ vacuum process combines a
permanent hermetic vacuum seal (no o-rings), with a stringent protocol and proprietary
materials to minimize outgassing. Outgassing is the release of trapped gases that would
otherwise degrade cooling performance and potentially cause sensor failure.
2. Figures are typical unless otherwise stated.
3
Edge pixels may exhibit a partial response.
4. Minimum temperatures listed are typical values with ambient temperature of 20°C.
5. Based on a Horizontal Pixel Readout of 100 kHz and a vertical pixel shift of 8 μs.
6. System Readout Noise is for the entire system. It is a combination of CCD readout noise
and A/D noise. Measurement is for Single Pixel readout with the CCD at a temperature of
-50°C (BR-DD models tested at -80°C) and minimum exposure time under dark conditions.
Noise is measured at the highest available pre-amplifier gain for each speed.
7. Linearity is measured from a plot of counts vs exposure time under constant photon flux up
to the saturation point of the system.
8. Vertical speeds are software selectable. All sensors are designed to give optimum
ChargeTransfer Efficiency (CTE) at 16 μs vertical pixel shift, some decrease in CTE may be
observed at faster shift speeds.
9. The graph shows typical dark current level as a function of temperature. The dark current
measurement is averaged over the CCD area excluding any regions of blemishes.
10. Quantum efficiency of the sensor as measured by the sensor manufacturer.
