yet pretty look.
Fill a dish with seasonal foliage such as mistletoe or ivy
then drape miniature fairy lights in and around it for the
ideal table decoration. Battery operated
lights are perfect as
they don't have an
unsightly flex and
plug attached.
Fireworks are always a dramatic addition to any
celebration. You can buy table fireworks for your indoor
display or add sparkle to your dining table with inexpensive

Citrus fruits such

Alternatively use

from a candlemaking kit.
When preparing your home for
Christmas entertaining try making
a feature of a disused fireplace by
neatly arranging a pile of dry logs
to fill the space then threading
white fairy lights in between the
logs to produce a heart-warming

Parliament Street,

Groups of tiny tea lights on a serving
platter give off a lovely warm glow. For a
celebratory look, wrap a thin length of
gold brocade around the edges of the
candles or coat them in glitter.
For a contemporary display, fill a
plain glass vase or a large bowl
with lantern-type fairy lights. They
look fantastic near the hearth or
as a table display.
Decorate plain doors with boughs of mistletoe, silvery
eucalyptus and little lights tied together with ribbon. Use
battery operated lights or secure the flex around the door
frame to the power socket.
Instead of candle holders, use vintage
style jam pots or chunky glass tumblers to
house small nightlights. Decorate the
vessels using ivy or sprigs of false berries
held in place by florist’s wire.
Fat candles look great and burn for hours so use them all
over the house but make sure they are always on a
heatproof plate and never left unsupervised for long.

Welcome your guests to your home with an arrangement of
outdoor candles around your front door. Scatter white
pebbles and red berries at the base of the candle holders to
hint at the festive colour scheme inside and to set the
seasonal scene.
Brighten up your Christmas with light ideas.
Smelly Christmas!
H
ousehold smells are to some extent
unavoidable whatever the time of
year but, when you have guests at
Christmas time it’s good to try to have a
sweet smelling home to entertain them in.
Up in smoke
There’s nothing worse than rooms which smell like a pub at
closing time and cigarette smoke tends to permeate
everything in your home. It gets into curtains, carpets and
upholstery and is difficult to shift. If you are a smoker
yourself, you may not object to others smoking in your
home but if you dislike the smell it has now become quite
acceptable to politely request that your guests should
smoke outside or in a designated area which is well
ventilated. This is particularly important if there are babies
and young children present. Otherwise make sure your
rooms are well ventilated and try scented candles or
lavender oil on the radiators to mask the smell. You can
also buy odour
neutralisers to break
down bacteria which
cause smells to linger.

The course will provide an understanding of the
principles and skills of defensive driving, it will
demonstrate and develop a systematic approach to
hazards, and put those skills into practice which will
reduce the risk of being in an accident.
The one-day course can be taken either on a one-to-one

Some lingering food smells are pleasant but unfortunately the reek of
boiling or steaming sprouts and cabbage tends to linger long after the
food is finished and they don’t enhance the atmosphere. When
cooking the vegetables, make sure you allow the smell to escape via a
cooker ventilation hood or an open window. If you’re steaming
cabbage or sprouts, put a crust of bread over the top of the pan. Invest
in an odour destroying spray from the supermarket.
Your fridge is full of all sorts of food
items so there’s often a wave of
different smells when you open the
door. Garlicky leftovers or pongy
cheese can be quite overpowering.
To reduce this, try to store leftovers
in plastic containers or cover them
with Clingfilm. Make sure spillages
haven’t trickled into the drip pan
underneath the fridge and make sure
the door seals are clean. They can be
rubbed with an unused toothbrush.
A fridge absorber reduces odour,
mould, mildew and bacteria and
extends the shelf life of perishable
foods.

All that glitters
Many men like to wear chunky items of jewellery so have a
look in the local shops and choose from a fantastic range of
gift ideas for men. Chunky bracelets and matching rings are
always popular in gold or silver and dog tag pendants are
still fashionable for men. Many men favour a plain gold or

just some of the things you’ll find there.
While you’re there, shop for local produce such as
traditionally smoked kippers, creamery products, locally

It's looking good at Utopia
Now there's much more to Utopia - more space, more comfort and more products - since owner Marco Leonetti expanded his Castlemona Colonnade
salon. Soft tones, granite work counters and leather chesterfields set the mood in the new-look salon where, with some 60 per cent more space, the
hairdressing salon is roomier with a dedicated section for nail technician clients, there's a lounge area with deep sofas plus a smart reception area.
There's also a separate new retail space where you'll find a wide range of professional products and equipment, all endorsed by Utopia. Male
grooming products include the latest from America Crew and, for the ladies, there's Aveda, TIGI, mop, Alterna and Nioxin, as well as Pro hairdryers
and GHD straighteners. Naturally, advice on products, styling or colouring is always available from the highly trained team.
With Christmas only a few weeks away, Utopia has gift vouchers plus a great range of gift ideas for women and men - there's even a personalised gift
wrapping service, so now your presents will look as good as your hair by Utopia.

TOY CHARTS
The top 10 toys this year (for Toymaster, Isle of Man) are:
1. Tamagotchi
This toy is making a comeback and as with the
original Tamigotchi you must take care of your pet
because how you care for it affects the way it will
grow. Hatch your egg. Will it be a boy or a girl? Give
it a name, care for it, exercise it so it doesn't become
overweight and unhappy. Clean up after it, nurse it
back to health when it's sick, discipline it when it's
naughty and praise it when it's good. By using the
new infra-red function you can communicate with
your friends, exchange gifts and play games
together. If your friendship goes well you can even
make Tamababies!
The screen size is twice the size of the original
making the images of the Tamagotchi characters
much clearer.

Toy safety
T
oy companies are required to
know about the safety of
their products and keep
records which describe the steps
they take to ensure that the toys
comply. The requirements include
aspects such as mechanical safety,
flammability, exclusion of toxic
materials and hygiene.
Toy retailers are required to ensure that the
toys on sale comply with the regulations. This
is usually done by getting assurances from
their suppliers that the information required is
available. Often retailers request independent
certificates to show that the products they are
buying are safe.

There are of course other ways to borrow money as local

based on your budget and ability to repay. This method is
more manageable as interest rates are usually lower and

Small, but perfectly formed
Y
ou don’t have to spend a fortune to
give someone a present to remember.
A beautifully wrapped gift is
guaranteed to make their day. According to
Charlotte Packer, co-author of Gift Wrapping
and Christmas Inspirations, you don’t need
a degree in design to create an eye-catching
masterpiece.
If you’re giving a token, tickets or money, a plain white
envelope can look a bit lacklustre. Instead, buy a colourful
envelope and decorate it with paper cut-outs, sequins,
metallic pens and glitter.
Alternatively, you can make your own decorative envelope
from a pretty piece of paper:
• Use an ordinary envelope of the correct size as a
template.
• Carefully open it out, using a paper knife if necessary.
Good wrapping need not be complicated, just wellexecuted and appropriate to the gift.
• Place the opened-out envelope flat on the back of the
paper you want to use then draw around it, cut it out and
glue it together.
And you don’t need to spend a fortune on materials if you
start building up a collection of items that may come in
use.
• Seal it by attaching a bead to the end of a length of silver
thread or fine wire and
wind it around the
envelope.
According to Charlotte,
items to look out for
include ‘scraps of pretty
paper, fabric and ribbon,
sturdy boxes and gift bags’.
Bottle it
Your wrapping kit should
also include a sharp pair
of scissors, plenty of
double-sided tape and
Sellotape.
Food and drink gift items
are often packaged so
beautifully that all you’ll
need to add is a gift tag
or pretty accessory.
Where to
start
However, if you do want
to wrap a bottle, here’s
how:
• Cut a piece of paper
longer than the bottle at
each end.
Firstly, you need to decide
on a theme for your
wrapping. Charlotte
suggests taking inspiration
from the colour and style
of your Christmas tree.
• Roll the paper tightly
round the bottle and
secure with tape, leaving
the ends free.
Rather than wrapping
every present in the same paper, choose a variety of papers
with similar patterns and colours, then use a scattering of
tree decorations to unify the theme.
• Neatly pleat the paper around the base and secure with
tape.
• Carefully fold the excess paper at the neck of the bottle to
create a point that can be folded over like the flap of an
envelope and secure with tape.
If you want to try something different to the usual shopbought wrapping paper, try using fabric off-cuts, wallpaper,
Cellophane, hand-marbled paper or even a map or print.
