Christmas tree was actually recorded in
Britain quite some time before Prince
Albert's time but he introduced the idea to
Windsor and established a Royal tradition of
gathering around the tree on Christmas Day.
The origin of the tree is hidden in the mists
of German mythology and it is thought to
have been a substitute for earlier human
sacrifice in honour of the winter solstice.
Real trees are still very popular today although some people
prefer the
convenience of
authentic looking
artificial trees. The
problem with real
trees used to be
that the warmth
in the house
would make them
drop their needles
which were then
tracked through
the whole house.
These days you
can buy non-drop
trees so that you
can enjoy the look
and fragrance of a
real tree without
the inconvenience
of getting needles
everywhere. Make
sure you have
measured the space you have available for your tree,
including the space the branches will need when they
spread, as it’s easy to overestimate when you see the trees
and end up with one that’s much too big and will overpower
your room. If you need advice on the best tree for your
requirements go to a local supplier like Robinsons and ask
for advice.

According to the British Nutrition Foundation, most of us
can consume up to 6,000 calories on the big day - and
Christmas dinner is a large part of that. But don’t get all
upset about it. You can still eat and enjoy! Here are a few
BNF tips to help cut the calories:- Opt for light turkey meat
rather than dark and remove the skin. Save about 50
calories- Avoid sausage meat stuffing.
Opt for something like chestnut and
apricot instead. Save 85 caloriesLeave potatoes and parsnips in large

It’s frighteningly easy to consume as many calories nibbling
canapes as you would if you ate a full meal. So don’t stand
next to the snack table just shovelling it in...think about
what you’re eating! Remember, if you arrive at a party
feeling hungry, you’re more likely to scoff. So have a
yoghurt or bowl of cereal beforehand. Then choose pretzels
and Twiglets as low fat alternatives to crisps and nuts,

choose breadsticks and healthy vegetables for dipping as

This toy is making a comeback and as with the original
Tamigotchi you must take care of your pet because how
you care for it affects the way it will grow. Hatch your egg.
Will it be a boy or a girl? Give it a name, care for it, exercise
it so it doesn't become overweight and unhappy. Clean up
after it, nurse it back to health when it's sick, discipline it
when it's naughty and praise it when it's good. By using
the new infra-red function you can communicate with
your friends, exchange gifts and play games together. If
your friendship goes well you can even make Tamababies!
The screen size is twice the size of the original making the

obile phone technology is changing
and growing all the time so they
make the ideal gift for someone
who has everything else. If you don’t want to
spend too much you can go for a basic
model which is probably more suitable for a
youngster’s first phone. After that there are
numerous facilities including taking still
photographs, videos, picture messaging and
much more. If your knowledge needs
updating and you’re not sure which model is
most suitable for your needs talk to the
experts. You could even treat yourself to the
latest model to capture the magical
moments of your Christmas.

Y
our feet get
so much use
during the
festive season that
it’s essential to
have comfortable
footwear. Boots
are ideal for
shopping trips in
the winter weather
and they come in
such a variety of
colours, styles
and materials that
you’ll be spoilt for
choice. If you
have lots of
walking to do it’s
probably best to buy boots and shoes with
not too high a heel as this might cause
discomfort.
For party wear, high heels elongate the legs and stretch the
muscles so that legs look both longer and slimmer. You
don’t have to teeter on impossibly high heels to achieve
the desired effect though as shoes with a two inch heel are
the most flattering.
Hop along to a local shoe stockist for lots of ideas to keep
your feet warm, comfortable and attractive throughout the
festive season.
YOUR number 1 - Studio 1
There can be no better excuse than the Christmas party season for seeking out
some seriously glitzy and glamorous new looks for your hair, so the team at
Studio 1 Hair Design have done all the hard work for you. Stylists and
proprietors Lisa Kean and George Shaw together with fellow stylist Lee Breadner
have recently returned from Salon International in London - the UK's largest
hairdressing show of the year - with new ideas, colours and products as well as
inspiration for dramatic, edgy and avant-garde styles, plus the latest in hair-ups.
Lisa explained: 'Going to the show was a great learning curve for us and means we
can keep up to date with all the latest trends in hairdressing and bring them to the
Island for our clients.'
Big
hair is 'big' this year, reports Lisa, as are large bouncy curls, hair-ups especially for parties - and precision-cut bobs 'with a twist'. On the colour front
mahogany, purple and plum shades are in, while the look this season is glossy,
silky, shiny hair, à la Catherine Zeta
Jones. Hair products include Nu:U ('new

Lisa.
Men aren't overlooked either at Studio1.
The trend this autumn/winter is for longer
hair, while 'petrol' is the colour of the
moment, described by Lisa as a 'green-y
blue-y' shade. Longer hair for men
demands quality products and Studio 1
stocks the latest range of shampoos,
conditioners and styling waxes by Fudge.
With Christmas just a few weeks away
the need to look fabulously festive has
never been greater, so for the entire
month of December Studio 1 is opening
seven days a week, with late nights every
night except Tuesday.

Party hair flair
A
t this time of year you want to let your
hair down but you certainly don’t want
it to let you down! Rich colour, a glossy
condition and an up-to-date style are
essential ingredients that will make you look
and feel extra special.
Colour it
If your hair is looking a bit drab, a home colorant could
make all the difference. First you need to decide on a
colour. Golden tones brighten blonde hair while ash shades
tone it down. Pale skinned brunettes can take a cool
chocolate colour but warmer skin tones should pick rich
chestnut. Redheads can cool down bright shades with an
ash-blonde colour.
Once you’ve decided, do a strand and skin test first to avoid
allergic reactions. Follow the instructions very carefully as

mistakes can be difficult and costly to put right. If in doubt, book an appointment with the
experts and have a salon colour.
Style it
Whatever your hair type
there’s a style that will
make you the belle of the
ball.
With the advent of hair
straighteners, straight
locks have become extremely popular. Hair fashion has fluctuated a bit but if you want
straight, shiny hair you can now have it. It’s important though to protect your hair from
damage so, when using straighteners, make sure you dry it thoroughly to remove all
residue of dampness. Next, brush your hair well to encourage the cuticles of the hair to lie
flat. To make sure your hair is fully protected
apply a heat protection spray throughout the
straightening process.
For the best result, clip the upper sections of
your hair on top of your head and start with the
underneath layers first. Place the straighteners
as close to the scalp as possible -without
burning it - and slide them through your hair
smoothly to the ends. Repeat this twice and if
your hair isn’t fully straight, take a smaller
section of hair and start again.
Curls have made a comeback recently and you

Place the tongs one to
two inches away from
the roots to avoid
burning your scalp and
wrap the hair around
them. Close the top of
the tongs and hold
them in place until the
hair is hot. Release the
tong and the hair will
spring into a coil.
Repeat this all over the
head then separate the
curls out with your
fingers. Use a styling
product that makes the
curls spring back for
longer while protecting
your hair from the
heat.

To get the ultimate look use heated rollers on medium
length hair. First wash and dry the hair then take sections
approximately the size of each roller and set the hair. Allow
the hair to cool then take the rollers out and hey
presto…you have curly hair! For looser curls, run a brush
through them and for more defined curls separate them
with your fingers.
To curl long hair, apply a firm control mousse to freshly
washed and conditioned hair then dry it. Starting at the
base of your neck carefully curl your hair with hot tongs,
working in square-inch sections and pinning the rest back.
Create a glamorous
‘up-do’ even if you’re
short of time. Pull the
hair back, but not too
tightly, into a sleek
ponytail and twist up on top. Leave the
ends to create loose curls forming a
halo slightly towards the back of the
head. Clip it in place with a flower hair
accessory if desired. Finish off with a
spritz of hair spray for long lasting
hold.

For that queasy stomach a cup of herbal tea [not coffee] is
the best bedtime drink after a night on the town. Camomile
has a mild tranquilizing effect. If you want a homeopathic
remedy then Nux Vomica calms the head and stomach but
there are also over the counter medicines which will settle
the stomach and quell indigestion so be sure to stock up on
your chosen items well in advance.
Promise your system a well earned return to sensible eating
and drinking habits in the New Year and stick to it.
Stick to light coloured drinks. It’s the
chemicals that give drinks such as red
wine, whisky and brandy their colour
that cause the most painful
hangovers. White wine and vodka are
safer bets.
A number of studies have shown that
milk thistle can help protect the liver
from the effects of alcohol and may
play a part in reducing high
cholesterol which can result from
eating too much fatty food. In fact it’s
such a great liver protector that some
researchers say it could have a role in
helping people recover from mild
alcoholic liver damage. Globe
artichoke stimulates the production
of bile and helps break down and
eliminate alcohol so go to your health
shop before the Christmas
indulgence.
