Annual
Report
Texas
Southwest
Council
Dear Scouting Supporter,
On behalf of more than 2,100 young people who benefit from the Scouting program in
Texas Southwest Council – thank you for your support!
Since its inception in 1910, Scouting has acted as a compass to guide youth on the road
to adulthood. This year was a rebuilding year for the Texas Southwest Council. The
Journey to Excellence Dashboard measures elements such as: fiscal management,
fundraising, endowment, market share, membership growth, youth retention, community service, commissioner service, unit visitations, council leadership, district leadership, unit leadership, and Boy Scout and Cub Scout camping and advancement. We are
committed to ensuring that we receive a Gold Council rating in 2014 and that Scouting
continues to be strong and continues to make a difference in the lives of our youth and
our communities.
Boys join Scouting to have fun but along the Scouting trail something very important
happens. Scouting helps youth grow in citizenship, physical fitness and commitment
to God and Country. Scouting also teaches our youth the importance of helping other
people at all times and instills in our next generation of leaders the importance of community.
In the pages of our 2013 Annual Report you will find evidence of Scouting’s impact
and influence in the lives of our youth, in our communities, churches and schools and
through the collaborative efforts we have undertaken. We can be proud of our accomplishments and we know that Scouting’s influence will make a positive difference in
the 23 ½ counties served by Texas Southwest Council.
We appreciate the support and leadership of the hundreds of adult leaders, parents and
chartered organizations that make Scouting come alive each day. Without your commitment the program would not happen and the promise of Scouting would not be delivered.

BSA MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to
make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the
values of the Scout Oath and Law.
The values we strive to instill are based on those found in the
Cub Scout Promise, Boy Scout Oath and the Venturing Oath:
Cub Scout Promise
I, (name), promise to do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
To Help other people, and
To obey the Law of the Pack.
Scout Oath
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
And to obey the Scout Law:
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
Mentally awake and morally straight.
The Venturing Oath
As a Venturer,
I promise to do my duty to God
And help strengthen America,
To help others, and
To seek truth, fairness and adventure
In our world.
CUB SCOUTING
Cub Scouting offers exciting activities
for younger boys. Tiger Cubs is for 1st grade
boys and their parents or guardians.
Boys in 2nd and 3rd grade are Cub Scouts.
A Webelos den of 4th and 5th graders prepares
them to be members of a Boy Scout Troop.
BOY SCOUTING
Boy Scouting is a program for boys who have
completed the 5th Grade. Scouts learn values
such as: self-esteem, citizenship, and outdoorsman-ship through a variety of activities. Scout’s
achievements are recognized through advancements in rank and special awards.
VENTURING
Venturing is a program for young men and women
ages 14 through 20. Venturing Crews often choose
an area of special interest such as: sailing,
mountaineering, sports, the outdoors, or youth
ministry.
EXPLORING
Exploring is a part of Learning for Life’s career
education program. The Texas Southwest Council
currently has several law enforcement explorer posts
across the council.

Cub Scout Fun Day
MAKING MEMORIES
Young boys have a great desire for outdoor
fun, excitement, and adventure. These
experiences encourage them to spend
quality time with family and friends.
Quality council camps and fun pack
outdoor events directed by qualified,
trained leaders provide an ideal setting for
these activities. What a success!
Council Camporee
September 13th-15th, Scouts attended
the Council Camporee at Angelo State
University Agriculture Research Facility . Eighty youth participated in the
agriculture centered camporee featuring merit badges such as fish and wildlife, journalism and hunters education.
2nd Annual Frontier Days
On Dec. 13th-14th, the Wintergarden
District put on its second Frontier
Days Weekend at Camp Fawcett.
The event was open to the entire
Council and it saw many troops from
all the districts. Among the activities,
there were knife throwing, hatchet
throwing, black powder shooting, and a new activity AT-al. During the
day, each patrol would have round robin through each event. The big activity this year was a real chuck wagon, that showed the boys how to
cook in a Dutch oven and how to prepare meals. At the end of the day,
there was a team event, where each troop would send a team to compete
in black powder, knife throwing, log throw and cannon ball throw to
name a few of the activities.
15th Annual Boy Scout Shootout
FUNDRAISING
On August 17th, we had numerous
people to participate in the 15th
Annual Boy Scout Shootout at the
Claybird Association. This event not
only hosted several shooting obstacles
but also hosted a silent auction and
two game boards. We look forward to
more of these to come. Thank you to
everyone that makes this event so
much fun. Way to Go!
Council Banquet
This annual event recognizes our
Eagle Scout class and Silver
Beaver Award recipients. This
year we recognized General
Prather as our 2nd Annual
Distinguished Eagle Scout award
recipient. Thank you to each and
every one of you that help
contribute to our programs!
Get your Popcorn!
On October 1st, we set our Scouting units
on the loose with their popcorn order sheets
in hand and popcorn prizes on their minds.
On November 22nd, we distributed
popcorn and would like to give a special
thank you to the Concho Valley Regional
Food Bank for letting us use their facility!
Kevin Franke-was the top seller with
$4690.00!!!
2013 National Jamboree
FUNDRAISING
On July 15th, we took Scouts to the
18th National Scout Jamboree. It was
the first national Scout Jamboree
held at the Summit Bechel Reserve
in West Virginia and the first jamboree to include Venturers as participants. The Scouts held a car wash
and concession stand to raise money!
Amistad Shoot
With so many youth involved in
activities; it was great to see the
adults get to have some fun as well!
We would like to give thanks to the
Uvalde Gun Club Association on
helping make all this possible!
3rd Annual All American
Golf Classic
On October 28th, All-American Auto
Group sponsored Texas Southwest
Council’s third annual golf tournament
that hosted ten adult teams. The
tournament was open to every level of
golfer and offered an invigorating day
of socializing and sporting fun.
Congratulations to Larry Coon, Carson
Cummings, Buck Kilman, and Joe
Graham as the 2013 1st place team!
Join us next year on October 27, 2014
as we prepare for another successful event!
FRIENDS OF SCOUTING
Without faithful Friends of Scouting like you, our work
with the youth of the Texas Southwest Council would simply not be possible. YOU are investing in their future… and
