Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
CASA is Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity’s official philanthropy. The
mission of the National CASA Association, together with its state and
local members, is to support and promote court-appointed volunteer
advocacy so that every abused or neglected child can be safe, establish
permanence and have the opportunity to thrive.
CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate
for abused and neglected children, to make sure they don’t get lost
in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish
in inappropriate group or foster homes. Volunteers stay with each case
until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For
many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant
adult presence in their lives.
Last year, more than 77,000 CASA and guardian ad litem (GAL)
volunteers helped 234,000 abused and neglected children find safe,
permanent homes. Independent research has demonstrated that
children with a CASA volunteer are substantially less likely to spend
time in long-term foster care and less likely to reenter care.
Tennessee CASA is a nonprofit organization established to support the
development, growth and continuation of programs, which recruit and
train volunteers to serve as advocates representing the best interests of
abused and neglected children. Stephanie Grant is currently serving
on the Board of Directors of Nashville CASA as the Kappa Alpha Theta
Representative .

Family and Children’s Service
The mission of Family and Children’s Service (FCS) is to connect
individuals and families to hope, to healing, and to one another.
Services Include:
Counseling and Community-based Services
In addition to traditional individual and family counseling, FCS has
targeted support groups for survivors of suicide, domestic violence, and
other traumas. FCS also provides school-based services for children
and parents that include counseling, prevention programs, character
development, academic supports, and resource linkages.
Crisis and Information Services
FCS serves more than 240,000 Tennesseans each year with phonebased services. FCS is home to the United Way’s 2-1-1 social service
referral line whose specialists connect callers to resources in the
community such as food, housing, healthcare, employment assistance,
legal help, and disaster aid. In addition, The Crisis Line is staffed
by trained counselors and is available to anyone experiencing a
crisis, ranging from empathetic listening to intervention in suicidal,
homicidal, or abusive situations. All services are free and operate 24
hours a day, 7 days a week.
Child and Family Permanency
The primary goal of the Child and Family Permanency programs is to
ensure that every child has a life-long connection with a committed,
supportive, permanent family. FCS serves more than 500 children and
300 adults each year through these programs.

and philanthropic programs of the fraternity and for the scholastic,
professional and service pursuits of its members, to help them reach
their fullest potential and make a difference in the world.

that awards more than $1 million annually, and since its founding has

Margie Shaffer Dale
2013 Bal d’Hiver Honorary Chairman
Margie is a Nashville native and a graduate of Harpeth Hall School.
Margie stayed close to home and attended Vanderbilt University
where she joined the Alpha Eta chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta. As an
undergraduate she served as pledge trainer and lived in the Theta house.
Margie is active in both the Nashville community and Kappa Alpha
Theta. She fondly recalls many busy days and nights spent serving as
President of MBA’s Mother’s Club and chairing Spaghetti Suppers. In
addition, she has served as the Provisional Chairman and Recording
Secretary for the Junior League of Nashville. She has also volunteered
on behalf of Cheekwood and served as Chairman of Children’s Services
for “Friends of Children’s Hospital.”
Always an active Theta Alum, Margie hosts Auntie Mame dinners and
has served on the Alpha Eta advisory board. She has a special connection
to Bal d’Hiver beneficiary, Family and Children’s Services. As a past
member of their Board of Directors, Margie was the Junior League
representative to their Board and Co-Chaired their annual benefit.
Currently, Margie is a member of the Bal d’Hiver board.
Margie has been married to her college sweetheart, Albert “Bert”
Jackson Dale III, for 40 years and is the mother of three grown boys.
She is blessed with three wonderful daughter-in-laws and seven
grandchildren. Most notably, Margie is enjoying her current positions
as spectator/cheerleader for soccer games, football games, school sings,
basketball games, dance recitals, and school plays of her grandchildren.
She is a fine mentor to the young women of Nashville.
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us in honoring Margie
this evening.

Mistress of Ceremonies
Amy Marsalis Simpkins
The Chairmen and Bal d’Hiver Board welcome Amy Marsalis Simpkins
to the 65th annual Bal d’Hiver Presentation Ball. Amy has graciously
offered to host our evening as we present 63 talented and educated
young women who are the “shining stars” of Nashville’s future.
Amy Marsalis came to Nashville 17 years ago from Minneapolis to be
the News Anchor for WTVF-Channel 5. Throughout her career, Amy
has served as a medical reporter, won an Emmy for her investigative
reporting, traveled abroad on assignments and has reported from both
political conventions and major sporting events. After presenting
the evening news at both 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. for 10 years, Amy now
supports several non-profits in our area. As a past member of the
American Heart Association Board of Directors, Amy is involved
with the “Go Red for Women” campaign to educate women about
heart disease. Amy has also served on the Board of Gilda’s Club, an
organization that provides support to those touched by cancer. Amy
and her husband, Keith Simpkins, spend time at the lake and enjoy
traveling.
Amy Marsalis Simpkins is a role model for young women of Nashville
in the way she spends her time and energy working for causes that affect
her fellow Nashvillians. Please join us in welcoming Amy Marsalis
Simpkins this evening.

In Memory of
Jane Chadwell Delony
1919-2013
The Nashville Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta lost a great “Theta
Lady” in Jane Chadwell Delony on March 6, 2013. Jane was an avid supporter
of the Bal d’Hiver for many years, having been an Honorary Chairman, and
she attended the Bal last year, just a few weeks after having major surgery.
Jane was a constant reminder of what Theta for a lifetime means in that she
gave her time unselfishly to Kappa Alpha Theta from the time of her initiation
in 1940 until her death -- 73 years of service. During that time, Jane served
as Alumnae District President, State Chairman, and Permanent Alumnae
Secretary. She was also Nashville Alumnae Chapter President, Theta of the
Year in 1985, and in January of this year was awarded the inaugural “Theta For
a Lifetime” award. There is a grant named in Jane’s honor at the Kappa Alpha
Theta Foundation.
Jane was born and grew up in Nashville. She was the daughter of Robert
and Lillian Anderson Chadwell. She attended Peabody Demonstration
School, graduated from Ward-Belmont College in 1939, and from Vanderbilt
University in 1941 with a major in mathematics. After college, she worked in
the actuarial department of National Life & Accident Insurance Company
until she married. She is survived by her daughters Patty Litton Delony of
Chicago, Illinois, and Frances Riley Delony of Sparta, Tennessee. Jane was
predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Chase Delony, who passed away in
1993 and her sister Patty Chadwell who passed away in 2012.
Jane was a member of the Centennial Club, Junior League of Nashville, the
Board of Trustees of the West End Home for Ladies Auxiliary, and a volunteer
at The Harpeth Hall School. She was a member of West End Methodist
Church where she taught Sunday school with her sister, Patty Chadwell,
for more than 60 years. She served as treasurer of the women’s society at
the church for many years. Jane’s love for Theta was infectious. She always
enjoyed being with collegians at both the Alpha Eta and the Eta Phi chapters
as well as working with alumnae. She was a model of how a woman could grow
and be an earnest, faithful, and enthusiastic worker both for the fraternity and
in life. Jane will be missed dearly but may her light shine ever bright.
