travel tips
The hard part is over; you’ve decided where
to go; now it comes down to the organising.
Sometimes it is the basic things that we tend to
forget so Qantas Holidays has compiled some tips
to simplify your planning.
k Climate
l Public Holidays in Laos
Southeast Asia’s weather throughout Vietnam, Cambodia
and Laos is subject to a monsoon season (May to October),
which along with extreme heat in some places during the
year, (June, July and August), means that typically the best
times to travel are during late winter months and spring,
although the fall harvest season can be pleasant as well.

i Tipping and etiquette
Tipping isn’t really the custom in Vietnam, Cambodia
and Laos.
In Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, visitors can show respect
for the local culture by following a few simple guidelines:
• If you wish to photograph someone, ask first
• Dress appropriately when visiting a temple or watching
a ceremony
• Public displays of affection are not acceptable
• Shoe removing is a custom when entering temples,
private homes and some shops and restaurants
In Laos and Cambodia, when greeting locals, practise ‘nop’
(Laos) or ‘sompeyar’ (Cambodia) by placing both palms
together and on a chest level with fingers facing up. Slowly
move your head forward as if making a bow.
e Important documents
Please check the passport and visa requirements with your
travel consultant or the appropriate embassy/consular

archaeological sites. Enjoy a guided introduction to the history
and mythology of the ruins of Angkor Wat, the Bayon and the
jungle-covered Ta Prohm. Hindu epics come to life in the sandstone
bas-reliefs of Angkor Wat and the intricate architecture affords
spectacular photo opportunities. Perhaps ease away any templefatigue with a massage back in town or travel further afield to visit
Banteay Srei, with the most detailed carvings of all the temples. End
this classic adventure by tucking into a sumptuous feast of delicious
Khmer cuisine in one of Siem Reap’s restaurants.

Classic Laos
Day 1: Vientiane
The fascinating capital of Laos possesses a tropical Asian vibe laced
with faded French Colonial charm. Weathered mansions, tree-lined
boulevards and old temples impart an atmosphere of timelessness
in Vientiane city. Take a private tour to see the thousands of Buddha
images at Wat Si Saket and visit Pha That Luang, a symbol of Lao
sovereignty.
Day 2: Luang Prabang
Travel from Vientiane to Luang Prabang by air. Visit the Royal
Palace Museum, an eclectic blend of French and Lao architecture,
where the royal family’s quarters have remained untouched since
1975. See a collection of rare Buddha images made from crystal
and gold as well as articles of royal regalia, including the king’s
own elephant saddle. Later, climb 328 steps to the Phu Si temple
- topped with a glittering golden stupa - and be rewarded with
panoramic views of Luang Prabang.
Day 3: Pak Ou Caves
From: Vientiane Operated by: Intrepid Travel
Duration: 5 days/4 nights Departures: Daily
Take a boat trip along the mighty Mekong River to the Pak Ou
Caves, two sacred limestone caves filled with Buddha images of
all styles and sizes. Each year, devoted pilgrims and villagers bring
more treasures to the caves. Stop in at the silk-weaving village of
Ban Phanom on return to Luang Prabang. Cap off a great day with a
classic Lao cocktail on the veranda of the Villa Santi Hotel.
Days 4-5: Luang Prabang
Watch lines of saffron-robed Buddhist monks walk the narrow
streets and laneways to receive alms from the faithful. Visit
Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang’s most magnificent temple,
or wander the banks of the Mekong River. The Classis Laos
adventure ends in what is truly one of Asia’s most
delightful cities.

Sightseeing HO CHI MINH CITY
Ho Chi Minh City
Vietnam’s largest city hugs the banks of
the Saigon River, which flows into the
South China Sea some 60 kilometres
away. It’s home to more than 9 million
people (including surrounding towns)
and is a buzzing metropolis of
motorbikes, markets, cafes, ancient
temples, colonial quarters and towering
skyscrapers. Fasten your seatbelts, this
dynamic city, formally known as Saigon,
is a wonderful ride.

SHOPPING
Be sure your visit to Ho Chi Minh City

Operated by: Travel Indochina Duration: 9 hours

Take a guided morning walking tour through the heart of
Saigon’s famous and historic city landmarks, including Dong
Khoi Street, the Rex Hotel, Municipal Theatre, Hotel de Ville
and Notre Dame Cathedral. Then drive through the city centre
built by the French, with its tree-lined boulevards, old ochre
coloured buildings and modern sky scrapers to the site of the
former US Embassy before visiting the Reunification Palace and
War Remnants Museum. Also travel to Cholon, Saigon’s Chinese
district, visiting Binh Tay market and Thien Hau temple.
Visit the famous guerilla tunnels at Cu Chi, approximately 70
kilometres northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Journey west from Ho
Chi Minh City to Cu Chi. On arrival you will be guided through
the famous tunnels used by the communist guerrillas during
the Vietnam War. The tunnel network stretches for over 250km
and extends over three levels underground, providing you with
a remarkable insight into the hardships, courage, determination
and terror of a guerrilla war.
Travel south to the Mekong Delta. Known as the ‘rice bowl’ of
Vietnam, the Delta is the most fertile region in the country. From
My Tho, cruise to one of the islands located in the middle of the
Mekong River. On the island visit a fruit orchard and sample
some local produce, before boarding a smaller sampan that
winds along narrow canals. You’ll also have the opportunity to
visit a local family’s house, enjoy their hospitality and share with
them some tea or rice wine. After lunch (included) return to Ho
Chi Minh City.

Explore one of Asia’s most captivating cities. Begin with a visit
to the Ho Chi Minh Quarter to see the mausoleum and house on
stilts. Continue onto the Presidential Palace, One Pillar Pagoda
and Temple of Literature. There is time to explore ‘Hanoi Hilton’,
the nickname given to the place where the US pilots shot down
over North Vietnamese airspace were imprisoned during the
Vietnam War, now a museum.
Visit the World Heritage listed Halong Bay, where you cruise
amongst thousands of limestone islets and grottoes. Journey
east to Hon Gai, passing fields of busy workers farming their rice
fields. You will have 4 hours aboard your boat cruising around
the magnificent bay. Considered Vietnam’s greatest natural
wonder, Halong Bay boasts over 3,000 islands that rise out of
the sea to provide a spectacular natural environment. Returning
to Hanoi, stop at a ceramic village where you can see artisans
create superb masterpieces in their kilns.
Learn some of the secrets of Northern Vietnamese cuisine at the
Highway 4 Cooking School. Meet at the Highway 4 Restaurant
and the tour begins with a visit to a famous local market to
learn about some of the ingredients often used in Vietnamese
cuisine. After returning to the restaurant by cyclo, change into
your own chef’s outfit and take part in a fun, hands on cooking demonstration covering a variety of dishes. Finally sit down to
sample the different dishes prepared during the demonstration
and learn a little about Vietnamese dining style.
NOTE: Tour includes lunch.
NOTE: Recipe books and lunch is included.
NOTE: While visiting the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, visitors must at all times wear

centre over many centuries and the Old Town has been largely
preserved. The architecture of the city reflects the influence of
Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, French and British traders. You
will visit a traditional ancient house, the Hoi An Museum, a
Chinese assembly hall and the Japanese Covered Bridge.
Drive to My Son, the former holy land of the Champa people,
who occupied this area of Vietnam from the 2nd to the 17th
century. In My Son you will find some amazing religious
monuments built during the Champa dynasty, though
unfortunately war and years of neglect has seen many of the
structures fall into ruin. About 80,000 Cham people still live
in various parts of Vietnam and are religiously and
culturally distinct.
Visit Hoi An’s colourful market and experience the amazing
sights, sounds and aromas; interact with local sellers and learn
about the local produce. Then board the Red Bridge boat for
a leisurely cruise (25 minutes) along the Hoi An River to the
Red Bridge Cooking School. Explore the cooking school’s herb
garden, before learning about some well-known dishes. The
cooking lesson runs for about 2 hours. Included in the class is
a brief introduction to Vietnamese food carving. After the lesson,
sit down and eat what you have cooked.

make it happen.
Please read these conditions carefully as they apply to all
Qantas Holidays bookings.
Suppliers: Qantas Holidays is not itself a transport, tour,
event or accommodation provider. In making your travel
arrangements we act only as an agent for the airlines,
hotels, tour operators and other suppliers who supply
those services. You should obtain and read the applicable
supplier’s terms and conditions as they may limit or exclude
their liability to you.
How to book: Contact your licensed AFTA travel consultant,
who will be responsible for managing your booking and
forwarding your payment to us. You will be deemed to have
accepted these conditions on behalf of everyone named in
your booking. Please note that all requests for bookings are
subject to availability.
Booking fee: Your travel agency may apply a booking fee in
addition to the price of your holiday package. Please check at
the time of booking.
Payment: A non-refundable deposit is payable within seven
days of confirmation of your booking:
• domestic (within Australia) $55 per person
• international $165 per person
• plus any additional deposit required by suppliers
(you will be notified at the time of booking)
Payment of the balance in full is required at least 30 days
before the scheduled commencement of your holiday (or
earlier if specified for the particular package). For bookings
made within this period, full payment is required at the time
of booking.
If you have not paid by the due date, we may cancel your
booking and retain your deposit.
Cancellations: If you cancel your booking, the amount
of your deposit will not be refunded, including deposits
required by suppliers. If you have paid the balance of your
holiday price, suppliers may also impose cancellation fees
amounting to all or part of the total price paid. Once your
holiday has commenced, you cannot cancel or obtain a
refund on any component of your booking regardless of
whether you use it.
Changes by you: If you change your holiday package and
your documents need to be reissued, a change fee is payable
at the time of the change:
• domestic (within Australia) $27
• international $25
• plus any cancellation / change fee imposed by suppliers for
any component you cancel.
Unforseen changes: If we have to change any part of your
booking, for example, if an airline changes its schedules or
your chosen accommodation is no longer available, or if
there is an increase in the price due to additional taxes or
supplier charges, we will notify you. You will have the option
of cancelling your booking, in which case we will refund the
amount you have paid, less deposit and any cancellation fees
imposed by other suppliers.

their own visa, passport (with at least 6 months validity),
immigration, quarantine, customs, health and other
requirements of the countries to be visited or transited
through. Qantas Holidays makes no representations as to

law, Qantas Holidays excludes all liability for direct, indirect,
consequential or incidental damages, lost profits or savings
or damages for disappointment. Our liability for a breach of
condition or warranty implied by law or otherwise, and which
cannot be excluded, is limited to the extent possible, at our
option to the supply of the services again or the payment of
the cost of having the services supplied again.
Insurance: Qantas Holidays recommends that all passengers
take out adequate travel insurance to cover cancellations,
health requirements, luggage and valuables, etc.
