2014-2015 BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Members of the Board of Trustees serve as stewards of the school who hold “in trust” its mission and reputation. As
such, Trustees accept the obligation to not only preserve but also to advance the institution. Their work begins with
the fiduciary expectations of duty (due diligence on financials), care (executing decisions by prudent standards) and
obedience (to laws and bylaws). Beyond these duties, Trustees focus on policies and strategies that are future-focused,
leaving daily operations to the Head of School, whom they select. The Board utilizes several committees to study and
assess in-depth the needs, activities and performance of the school and to make recommendations when planning,
developing and establishing policy.

2014-2015 BOARD OF ADVISORS
Initiated in 1997, the Providence Day School Board of Advisors serves as a link between the PDS community and
administration. The Board of Advisors is comprised of current parents, alumni parents and alumni. Members are active
supporters of PDS through their gifts of time, talent and resources. With a focus on strategic issues, the Board of Advisors
assists the school in identifying new opportunities for growth and improvement. The Board of Advisors also provides
PDS with a clear understanding of the external environment in which the school operates, and helps to identify key
stakeholder and potential partners to help the school achieve its strategic goals.

Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends of PDS:
I’m pleased to share with you the Report on Philanthropy for the 2014-2015 school year, which
clearly shows the deep support and loyalty of the Providence Day School community.
The culture of philanthropy that lives here is a rich tradition of giving that has sustained and
supported us for 45 years. I’m proud to say this school was built by the hands of our parents,
faculty and staff. That legacy still exists today.
With a strong spirit of giving, our Providence Day community is signaling its belief in the
mission and core values that guide us. A passion for learning, social responsibility and personal integrity are honored and
upheld by philanthropy. We take great pride in record-high participation rates and active volunteerism. We’re tremendously
grateful for the generous support we receive from parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and faculty and staff. As you
will see illustrated in these pages, we had an incredibly successful year:
• Alumni giving participation increasing from 2.9 to 20.8 percent in just 15 months
• A record-breaking Annual Fund at $1.3 million, including 100 percent support from faculty
• Parent participation in giving up from 74 to 79 percent
• CASE honoring PDS with Educational Fundraising Award
Indeed, it is truly inspiring how the culture of philanthropy enriches the student experience and expands opportunities for
our teachers at all grade levels. When you walk across the campus or engage with any member of our Charger family, you’ll
recognize your gift in action at PDS — classroom innovations, local and global connections, service to others, extraordinary
learning environments and distinguished faculty.
Together, we are creating a “community for life” that values the power and long-lasting impact of a Providence Day School

The Providence Day School Heritage Society recognizes those members of the PDS community who have included PDS
in their estate plans. Heritage Society giving to PDS includes such planned gifts as life insurance policies, bequests, and real
estate. Gifts to the Heritage Society are generally designated toward the endowment and secure the future of Providence
Day School for generations to come.

Providence Day School was founded in 1970 by 12 families who came together to create a school that would provide an exceptional
learning environment for the children of Charlotte. The 1970 Society was established in the spirit of our founders’ commitment to
PDS and recognizes those donors who give $1,000 or more to the school in the current fiscal year.

The Desoer Family Global Studies Faculty Award
Established in 2008 with a generous gift from Marc and Barbara Desoer, the
Desoer Family Global Studies Faculty Award was given to fulfill a matching
gift challenge from the Edward E. Ford Foundation. The endowment is used
to support international travel by Upper School faculty as part of the Global
Educator Certificate program.
This award is given annually to enable Upper School teachers to take advantage
of an international professional development experience and bring knowledge
and perspective gained back into the classroom. Recipients must demonstrate
excellence in teaching, a passion for inspiring students, and an enthusiasm for
bringing a global perspective into the classroom.
The Gilmer L. Murdock, Jr. Endowment Fund
In 2007, family and friends of Gil Murdock established the Gilmer L. Murdock
Endowment Fund in his memory. The fund was created to ensure that all
students are able to fully benefit from the Providence Day School experience.
Awards will cover “extra” expenses including tutoring, SAT review classes,
calculators, class trips, sports equipment, team camps, and special tournaments
for any student demonstrating financial need.
Kristen Duren Academic Excellence Award
Established in 1985 by family and friends in memory of Kristen Duren, this
financial aid award is given annually to a qualified sophomore who exemplifies
school spirit, a positive attitude, academic excellence and involvement in
extracurricular activities.
The Kristina C. Brockmeier Endowment for Financial Aid
The Kristina C. Brockmeier Endowment was created in 2010 through gifts to
Providence Day School from friends, colleagues and the Brockmeier family in
loving memory of faculty member, Dr. Kristina Brockmeier. The fund provides

PDS Surpasses 2014-15 Annual Fund Goal
Thanks to the generosity of the Providence Day School community,
the Annual Fund achieved another record breaking total of
$1,310,778.
The Annual Fund provides critical support to the school’s
yearly operating budget and has a significant qualitative impact on
students, faculty, programming and facilities at PDS.
