Sunday,September 15, 2013 Tech Ed Larissa Graham Staff Reporter While nothing can replace a teacher in the classroom, Elk City’s teachers are getting new tools to help pass on their lessons to their students. Algebra II teacher Robin Coffman spends her mornings teaching juniors and sophomores. The other half is spent helping teachers learn how to use new forms of technology like iPads and Smart Boards. “The iPads are the newest things we have,” Coffman said. Each building in the district has a cart with 25 iPads, Coffman said. The junior high has three carts, and some other departments, like agriculture or family and consumer sciences, have additional iPads to help with activities. “It’s a relatively easy thing to individualize to the student when they each have an iPad,” Coffman said. “For example, we’ve gotten some kids in that don’t speak any English. Through the translator ap and other aps, teachers are able to communicate with them better and get them on a level they New technology helps Elk City students learn need to be on to start learning the English language to be successful in class.” There’s a give and take relationship with teachers, Coffman said. When teachers find an ap they think would help in their class, they pass that on to the principals, who in turn contact Tony Chauncey, the district’s IT director. “We have an Apple server that talks to all iPads all over the district. So he can push those aps out to the specific iPads we request through that Apple server,” Coffman said. So far, Coffman said she thinks the iPads have been beneficial in the classroom. “Up to this point I think the iPads have been successful,” Coffman said. “It’s new so kids are really excited. It’s generated a lot of enthusiasm with the kids and the teachers, and we’re in the process of learning how to use them most effectively. It takes a little bit of thinking outside the box.” The financial literacy teacher at the junior high, she said, has been using the iPads to give students a better idea of technology they’ll use when they enter adulthood. “She found aps where kids can do banking statements online, and it looks like an online banking situation, which is what they’ll be faced with more than the old paper registers,” Coffman said. “She is using it a lot in finance class and has been very successful with it.” For now, the school’s using free aps, Coffman said. At some point she expects to see a need for paid aps. “There’s going to come a point in time – we’ve looked at aps for helping kids get ready for the AP calculus and history tests and other tests – and the free version has like 20 notecards out of the 300, and the rest are paid. There’s going to come a time when the free aps may not be enough in some situations,” Coffman said. By taking it one step at a time, she said, there’s less of a risk for teachers and administrators to be overwhelmed. “That was the main thing we heard from other schools, that it was overwhelming for the district and teachers and people handed out all these iPads and said, ‘Here,’” Coffman said. “So Classifieds page 1C we’re trying to avoid that frustration and that pitfall where we do just try to take it one step at a time and learn how to use this most effectively before we throw something else out there.” In addition to the iPads, Coffman’s also helping teachers learn how to better use Smart Boards. “It’s like an electronic whiteboard, where kids and teachers can touch things and make things move,” Coffman said. With Smart Boards, teachers can record lessons and send them as video clips to students who were absent, or who miss class for an extended period of time. Doors open at 11 a.m. and close at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $6. Children younger than eight are admitted free. “We need at least 10 cookers,” Bill Grissom said. “More would be better.” Sponsored by Western Oklahoma Historical Society, the chili cookoff offers cookers an opportunity to share their chili with a large group of people and compete for prizes. Tasters vote for the best chili. Deserts will be available. Prizes are awarded for first- through fourth-place. First place winner takes home $400. Send place earns $200; third place wins $100 and fourth place wins $50. Awards are sponsored by First National Bank, Bank of Western Oklahoma, Legacy Bank and Great Plains National Bank. Thousands visit Elk City museums Museum Director surprised by numbers Cheryl Overstreet Community Editor He spent the past month learning the ropes and adjusting to his new job. Elk City Museum Director Basil Weatherly said he still has more to learn. “Maxine Jackson is the manager of the complex and she does a great job,” he said. “I try to assist her in the day-to-day management of the museum.” He said he fills in when people are off work and is learning the ins and outs of the operation. Weatherly’s “biggest shock” since taking the job at the museum is the large number of overseas tourists. “Ninety of every 100 visitors to the museum are from foreign countries,” Weatherly said. He said the visitors, depending on the time of day they visit, add to the local economy. “They eat at local restaurants and buy fuel and other items in Elk City,” he said. Some stay in local motels and shop in Elk City while here. Weatherly said the largest day on record for the museum complex occurred on Aug. 24 when 218 people visited the museum. “We had four tour groups through the museum that day,” he said. “… all following Route 66.” The same day more than 30 people – area and local – were holding a meeting in the Route 66 Blacksmith Shop. “There was lots for them to see that day,” he said. Weatherly met four English women traveling along Route 66 recently. They told him they wanted to see a rodeo and after learning about Elk City’s annual Rodeo of Champions, they said they plan to make the trip again on rodeo weekend in the future. The largest number of countries represented on one given day was 15, Mildred Nesser said. Nesser works the main entrance to the museum and the gift shop. “The best selling items here are t-shirts, mugs and Route 66 signs,” she said. On Wednesday, a group of 40+ people from New Zealand visited the complex. They flew to Los Angeles where they rented new Mustangs and trekked across the country to Chicago. They were making the return trip on Route 66 from the windy city to Santa Monica, Calif. “Those people arrived around noon and wanted to know of a place to eat lunch,” he said. Groups of eight or more visit for $3 each. The average number of visitors per day is 100. Weatherly said the people from Elk City visit the museum “when they have relatives in town.” “We are working on a promotional video,” Weatherly said. He is working with City Manager Anita Archer as well as the Elk City Visitor and Tourism Bureau to promote the museum. In both cases, a South Carolina couple has attempted to adopt a tribal member born in Oklahoma and placed up for adoption by the mother. In both cases, the father objected. A federal law called the Indian Child Welfare Act mandates strict procedures for guardianship and custody of Native American children. In the most recent case, the infant known as Desaray was born in May in Oklahoma. A couple in South Carolina who sought to adopt her returned with her to their home. But the infant’s biological father, who is not Native American, is seeking custody. Because Desaray’s biological mother is a tribal member, the Absentee Shawnee Tribe has stepped in, and the tribe was awarded custody this week. The Indian Child Welfare Act mandates that Native American children enrolled in a tribe must first be placed with an extended family member, another tribal member who is not a family member or Radio log Sept. 13 10:21 a.m. – domestic dispute – 400 block McArthur – couple arguing 10:30 a.m. – animal call – 100 block Thornton – dog at large – animal locate and returned to owner 10:48 a.m. – animal call – 400 block W. 5th – follow up 11:02 a.m. – animal call – 3100 block W. 3rd – kitten in storm drain 11:18 a.m. – animal call – 7th and Pioneer – trap service 12:03 p.m. – animal call – 100 block Thornton – unable to locate 1:27 p.m. – intoxicated person – 500 block N. This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Dusten Brown, a Cherokee Nation member, who is seeking custody of his biological daughter, 3-year-old Veronica, could not use the law to press his claims for custody. Veronica’s biological mother is not Native American. Courts in both South Carolina and Oklahoma have ordered Brown to hand over the girl to the South Carolina couple, Matt and Melanie Capobianco, but Brown has refused. A lawyer representing the Absentee Shawnee Tribe in the Desaray case said he fears the tribe could have trouble in its effort to return Desaray to Oklahoma. Charles Tripp said he believes the South Carolinabased adoption lawyer, Ray Godwin, who helped set up adoption cases involving both Veronica and Desaray, and other adoption lawyers should be investigated by the Department of Justice. “Part of the reason for an investigation is the fact that I think we’ve got women, primarily, who are in bad situations finically, maybe emotionally, maybe societal issues — whether that’s drug and alcohol issues or criminal issues — who are being selected, preyed upon, by these agencies,” he said. In a statement, Godwin said the Absentee Shawnee Tribe was aware of the plan for adoption prior to the birth and said the tribe did not voice any objections. We remembered our “date that will live in infamy.” On the grounds of City Hall, there was the beautiful city’s remembrance ceremony that honored the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. That evening there was a patriotic presentation of the “Flags of America” presented by the Sulpher Nicholas American Legion Post 148. Part of that event featured Billy Bashaw’s first-hand account of the falling towers. With raw emotion, he outlined his observations and feelings. I hope many other communities in Oklahoma and across the nation held these observances because we need to remember the event and date that changed our way of life in so many ways. USA Today, the national newspaper, ran its 9/11 story on page four. It pointed out that on the 12th anniversary of the attack, “There are signs of a gradual desensitization to the tragedy’s once –piercing wounds.” With the emotions I saw here this week I do not think the events of 9/11/01 will ever fade from our memory. Jim Nicholas is managing editor for The Elk City Daily News. Contact him at [email protected]. Split in Two Seldom Black or White Kevin Black Governor Elbridge Gerry was quite a partisan politician. Signer of the Declaration of Independence and fifth Vice President of the United States, he is best known for giving his name to the political process of gerrymandering. Gerrymandering, a fine old American tradition that reeks of subterfuge and secrecy, is a great example of what is wrong with our political system. The Constitution mandates a census every 10 years in order to apportion the members of the House of Representatives to each state. Oklahoma has five Representatives; California has 53-- more people, more Representatives. The Constitution also declares that the state legislatures shall draw the lines of each Representative’s district. That is where Governor Elbridge Gerry came into the picture. Under his partisan leadership, the Massachusetts legislature redrew district lines so as to dilute the vote of their hated enemy, the Federalists. One of the districts was so contorted that it reminded the Federalists of a salamander, hence the term “gerrymandering.” To gerrymander is to draw the lines of a legislative district so that it reduces, or even eliminates, the possibility of the opposition party winning an election. Gerrymandering is most common in state legislatures and Oklahoma is no exception. Consider Elk City, for example. Historically, Elk City was the most populous city in District 60. Representatives Danny George, Randy Beutler and Purcy Dale Walker, all Democrats, were from Elk City. In 2010, District 60 was gerrymandered out of existence-- District 60 is now in El Reno. Elk City was split into two districts. North of Third Street is now Representative Harold Wright of Weatherford’s district. If you live south of Third Street, you’re in Representative Todd Russ of Cordell’s district. It’s almost as if our legislature decided that no one the likes of Danny, Randy, or Pur- cy Dale would ever be elected to the legislature again. Surely not! My opinions are my Black own. Have a great day and better tomorrow. Kevin Black resides in Texola. Happily married with three sons, an exceptional grandson and three idiot dogs, he enjoys reading, old machinery and high school sports. He has taught at Elk City High School since 1989. United States Editorial Roundup The Times, Gainesville, Ga., on Mideast peace still elusive 12 years after 9/11 attacks: Twelve years ago this Wednesday, we were suddenly and stunningly jolted from our naive notion that the world was a much safer place than we had led ourselves to believe. The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, took 3,000 lives and impacted millions more by jerking the blinders off our heads. So America saddled up, went to war in the Middle East, and eventually earned some measure of justice by taking down many al-Qaida leaders and sending the Taliban running into the hills. Yet a dozen years later, the Middle East looks no more stable nor peaceful than it was in 2001. That leads many to wonder what U.S. policy should be in the region. It’s a debate without a clear right or a left, nor easy answers, as the nation considers taking action in yet another turbulent locale, Syria. The 9/11 attacks directly led to the U.S. military action in Afghanistan. That war has cost 2,200 American lives with success hard to measure, though the No. 2 U.S. commander there, Army Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, said last week he believes victory still can be won before forces withdraw at the end of 2014. The terror attacks also indirectly led to the U.S. invasion of Iraq a year later, based on the belief Saddam Hussein’s regime had supported the terrorists and amassed destructive weapons. Our nation committed more than 4,400 lives and billions of dollars in a divisive engagement that many still believe was a mistake ... Now civil war in Syria pits Bashar Assad’s government against revolutionaries seeking to add that country to the Arab Spring list of toppled dictators that included Libya’s Gadhafi and Egypt’s Mubarak. His armed forces’ apparent use of chemical weapons in a recent battle has the Obama administration seeking “targeted, limited” airstrikes against some of his military sites. If we learned anything from these messy Mideast uprisings it’s that removing one group of bad actors doesn’t lead to peace, stability and democracy — usually just to a different group of equally bad actors who impose their own brand of oppressive rule and political retribution. ___ The Tampa (Fla.) Tribune on vexing U.N. vetoes: Many Americans may be infuriated that Russia and China have signaled their readiness to veto any United Nations Security Council resolution that calls for intervention to punish Syria’s use of chemical weapons in its brutal civil war. According to U.N. rules, adopted in 1945 when the international organization was created, any of the five permanent members (the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, China and France) of the Security Council may veto any resolution brought before the council, thus preventing any action the other members may favor. Critics believe that the U.N. founders made a terrible mistake in granting that veto power, and perhaps they’re right. But it would be a serious mistake to think that the veto power doesn’t serve American interests as well as those of our adversaries. Over the years, the American ambassador to the U.N. has frequently exercised the right to cast a veto. ... The first United States veto came in 1970 and dealt with a major crisis in what was then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The United Kingdom, of which Rhodesia was once a colony, vetoed seven Security Council resolutions on that subject. Two years later, the United States cast the only veto on a resolution that was critical of Israel. In fact, since 1972 the United States has been by far the most frequent user of the veto and nearly all the vetoes involved resolutions that were contrary to Israel’s political interests. ... Benjamin Ferencz, a prosecutor at the Nuremberg war crimes trials after World War II, suggested (in a recent letter to The New York Times) that in this case the Security Council should refer the matter to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, “which is competent to penalize crimes against humanity.” What he didn’t say, however, is how the Syrian leader, Bashar alAssad, could be forced to face that court. Still, the U.N., for its faults and machinations, does provide a useful if imperfect global platform for maintaining peaceful relations and providing humanitarian aid, as world leaders envisioned when it was formed at the end of World War II. The United States should never allow its involvement to diminish its security or sovereignty, but the United Nations, vetoes and all, does serve a valuable purpose. ___ New York Times on Pakistan’s peaceful transition: During most of his five years as Pakistan’s president, Asif Ali Zardari was so embattled that there were constant rumors that he would be killed, jailed or ousted in a military coup. On Sunday, he left office after a formal lunch hosted by his political rivals. This was the first time that an elected Pakistani president had completed his term; most others were overthrown or forced to resign. It was a remarkable development in a fragile nation not known for peaceful transitions. On Monday, Mamnoon Hussain, an obscure 73-yearold political figure, was sworn in as his successor. This was all seen as a hopeful if unexpected sign that democratic institutions may be taking hold. Zardari, elected president after his wife, Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister, was assassinated, was controversial. Senior judges tried to unseat him through corruption prosecutions; generals spread rumors of possible coups; the news media and the public criticized him incessantly; the Taliban vowed to kill him. But he confounded critics by surviving. He also strengthened democracy by moderating the powers of his own office and the confrontational tone of politics in general. Pakistan remains a dangerous country. ... It is vitally important that Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the military, headed by Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, work together to strengthen democratic processes. Kayani, probably the most powerful man in the country, should step down as planned in November and be replaced by someone who will continue to decrease the army role in politics. Now that Pakistan has secured a $6.6 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, the government should make the reforms needed to get the country on a sound financial footing. That has to include making sure that Pakistan’s wealthy elite pay income taxes, and, if Pakistani leaders are smart, will also include shutting down a nuclear weapons program that wastes billions of dollars better spent on social programs like education. The peaceful transition from Zardari to Hussain gives Pakistan a marker on which to build. ___ Omaha World-Herald on Olympics rightly bringing back wrestling: After making a mess of things, the International Olympic Committee finally got it right. Wrestling is back. In an inexplicable move earlier this year, the IOC’s executive board cut wrestling from the list of Summer Games sports, explaining that it wanted to look for new sports that would sell more tickets and be more television-friendly. Wrestlers worldwide, and those in the Midlands, rightly protested. After all, their sport was part of the original games in ancient Greece and has been included in every modern Olympics except 1900. The ill-conceived move even brought together some unlikely allies. The United States, Iran and Russia all threw their weight behind the campaign to reinstate wrestling. On Sunday, the Olympic committee admitted its mistake and voted to include wrestling in the 2020 and 2024 games. Although it stopped short of re- instating wrestling as a “core” Olympic summer sport, IOC President Jacques Rogge acknowledged that “wrestling has shown great passion and resilience in the last few months.” In the fight to remain in the Olympics, wrestling’s international governing body reworked the sport’s struc- ture, added weight classes for women and adopted rules changes designed to make the sport easier for spectators to understand and more fun to watch. In the long run, those changes could be a real positive for the athletes. ... Olympics officials axed wrestling because they said they wanted new, more popular sports. It was a dumb idea, and the vote to bring wrestling back shows they seem to understand that now. Going back to its roots is a good move for the Olympics and for the athletes of the future. ____ Los Angeles Times on cashing in on Uncle Sam’s sweet tooth: Federal efforts to protect growers of sugar beets and sugar cane epitomize everything that’s wrong with U.S. farm programs. At times they’ve artificially raised the price of sugar, costing consumers billions of dollars; at other times they’ve stuck taxpayers with the bill for the surplus sugar production they’ve promoted. The fact that the sugar program is likely to survive the latest rewrite of the farm bill unscathed is a testament to how limited the bill’s “reforms” are. Sweeteners are ubiquitous in processed foods, and sugar is the most popular by far. There are two primary sources in the United States: sugar beets, which are grown in parts of California (mainly in Imperial County) and 10 other states, and sugar cane, which is grown only in Hawaii, Texas, Louisiana and Florida. According to the most recent national data, there are 155 sugar beet farms in California — all in the southeastern corner — and two sugar refineries. ... This year, hunters can take six teal per day - up from four in previous years. The special resident Canada goose daily limit remains at eight. “While estimated teal populations this year are below the numbers of the last couple years, it was still the third highest count on record,” said Josh Richardson, migratory game bird biologist for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Every year the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposes frameworks to states for structuring their waterfowl seasons. After an analysis of teal populations and harvest, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was open to allowing liberalizations of teal seasons this year. “Analysis of the data showed that teal were able to sustain, at a minimum, twice the harvest pressure they currently have,” Richardson said. “Since nearly all the harvest of bluewinged teal occurs during the special September seasons, the obvious way to provide more opportunity was to liberalize the September teal season.” Blue-winged and green-winged teal are the first ducks to travel through Oklahoma as they migrate southward on their traditional journey to wintering grounds in Mexico and Central and South America. They migrate quickly and don’t stay in Oklahoma a long time. According to Richardson, the best teal strategy usually involves scouting areas and being ready to hunt them as soon as a cold front arrives or immediately after. “The stronger the front, the more birds are likely to be moving through,” Richardson said. Richardson notes that there is significantly more water available to waterfowl in Oklahoma this year than last year when, despite near record numbers of waterfowl, hunters often had challenges getting to areas with enough water for a successful hunt. Resident Canada geese are those birds that live in Oklahoma yearround, providing a chance to hunt before migrant birds from the north begin arriving in large numbers. Richardson said goose populations continue to remain high across Oklahoma, and production this past spring appeared to average to above average. “Geese follow a pretty regular pattern this time of year, so finding fields that they feed in that are open to hunting should provide good action,” he said. “Most often these birds spend their days within city limits, so gaining access to a roosting pond to hunt them as they return to loaf through the day is pretty difficult, but if you are fortunate to have such a location, that should provide some good shooting as well. All waterfowl hunting is restricted to federally-approved nontoxic shot in all areas of the state, and hunters must have a valid federal duck stamp and Harvest Information (HIP) permit, as well as a state waterfowl hunting license, unless exempt. Possession of lead shot while hunting waterfowl is prohibited. For more information and complete regulations for the September teal and special resident Canada goose hunting seasons, consult the current “Oklahoma Hunting Guide,” available free online at wildlifedepartment.com or in print anywhere hunting licenses are sold. The regular state duck seasons kick off Oct. 1 in the Panhandle counties, Oct. 26 in Zone 1 (includes most of northwest Oklahoma excluding the Panhandle) and Nov. 2 in Zone 2 (everywhere else by northwest Oklahoma and the Panhandle). The regular season for Canada geese will open Nov. 2. For more information about waterfowl hunting in Oklahoma, log on to wildlifedepartment.com. The Big Elks coming into the game off of a stellar week one performance, beating Watonga handily by a score of 44-27. The Tuttle Tigers came into Friday’s game with a 0-1 record, losing to Plainview at home by a score of 19-14. The Elks won the coin toss and chose to receive the kickoff on the South side of the field with a slight southerly breeze at their backs. The Big Elk offense started the opening drive on their own thirty yard line but only moved the ball a few yards before having to punt the ball away. Tuttle’s first offensive drive was clean and quick, driving the ball fifty five yards in less than sixty seconds. Tuttle’s junior running back Morgan Neal broke a 36 yard touchdown run to score the first points of the game. The Tigers extra point attempt went through the uprights, but a defensive penalty by the Elks caused the extra point attempt to be replayed. With Tuttle now half the distance to the goal line, they opted to try for the two point conversion, which was successfully run in by The Tigers Senior Jacob Vowell. Tuttle drew first blood bringing the score to 8-0. The Elks received the following kickoff, returning it to near the Elk City 45 yard line. The offense had a hard time stringing together plays for much positive yardage, and were forced to punt the ball back to the explosive Tuttle Offense. The Tigers then started their drive fairly deep in their own territory on the 19 yard line. The Big Elk defense had very little luck stopping the big, fast, and illusive backs and receivers from Tuttle as they ran the ball up the middle for 34 yards putting them back in Elks’ territory. Two plays later The Tigers fullback tucked the ball and ran, breaking away from Big Elk defenders running 31 yards for the touchdown, and increasing the Tuttle lead 15-0. The Elks following offensive possession was a short one, with Austin Maine throwing an interception on the third play of the drive. Tuttle had a short field to work with and seemed to be trying to put the game out of reach before halftime. The Tuttle quarterback was deadly accurate hitting his tall and fast receivers in stride. His first pass went for 16 yard gain putting Tuttle inside the Elk City 20 yard line. The next play was a quarterback keeper with Tuttle quarterback Jett Jobe finding his way to the end zone for another Tiger touchdown. Then the successful extra point kick from kicker Ty Stonebreaker, who proved to be one of the busiest young men on the field Friday night. The first quarter was what really set the pace for the rest of the game. The Elks struggled to run the ball against a bigger and more physical opponent, and when Elk quarterback Maine would try a pass play the opposition’s defense seemed to always be on top of whatever play the Big Elks Ran. Elk City Receiver Mark Adams went down with an ankle injury near the end of the first quarter after a nifty seven yard run. Mark seemed to be OK enough to go back in the game several times playing through pain, and determined to stay in the game. Tuttle scored again with another long touchdown run. This time a 46 yard run by senior running back Jesse Gregory who was nearly unstoppable every time he touched the ball. The lead for Tuttle was now 29-0 with a little over a minute to go in the first quarter. The Tuttle Tigers then kicked off to the Elk Cities Josh Adams who mishandled the ball and tried to get downfield only to be taken down at the Big Elk two yard line. The next play from scrimmage was a handoff from Austin Maine to Josh Adams who was met in the backfield by two Tuttle defenders who tackled Adams behind the goal line for a safety. Resulting in two points and possession of the football, bringing the score to Tuttle 31 and Elk City 0. Josh Adams punted the free kick back to the Tigers after the safety with Tuttle bringing the ball up to their own forty eight yard line to begin their next painfully brief drive downfield. A 52 yard pass from Tuttle quarterback Jett Jobe to receiver Jesse Gregory brought the painful first quarter to a close with Tuttle leading the Big Elks 38-0. Tuttle would continue to find the end zone again in the second quarter, seizing every opportunity. Elk City quarterback Gage Porter who stepped in for the usual Big Elk quarterback Austin Maine completed a 36 yard pass from the Elk City 16 yard line to Big Elk receiver Luke Lewallen who took the ball to the 48 yard line of Tuttle. Porter was injured on the play, and was carried off the field clutching his left knee and would not return to the game for the second half. Austin Maine came back in, but was picked off on his first passing attempt, and Tuttle drove the ball downfield to find the end zone again. Tuttle would reach the end zone one more time in the first half. Going into the locker room having gained 364 rushing yards on 18 carries while leading our Elk City Big Elks 52-0. The Elks, after much frustration, trying to string together enough plays to sustain a drive or stay mistake free while close to the goal line, finally got some relief. Near the end of the third quarter with the Elk City offense beginning on their own 29 yard line, Big Elk Quarterback Austin Maine hit Luke Lewallen for a 64 yard completion. The big play put the Elks all the way down to the Tuttle 7 yard line. The following play was a quarterback keeper that went for two yards. Then on second down Quarterback Maine hit Luke Lewallen in the end zone for the Elks only touchdown of the night. Reyes then nailed the extra point. Those seven points would prove to be the only points for the never say never Big Elks. Tuttle beat the Elks by a score of 66-7. Several of the Elks that spoke after the game expressed that they didn’t play as physically as they needed to to compete with a team as well disciplined and physically big and strong as Tuttle. The players also made no excuses as to why they lost. No one tried blaming the loss on injuries suffered by offensive linemen, or by anything else out of their control. Lack of physicality by the team as a whole, and especially at the line of scrimmage and mental mistakes were the main culprits of the loss according to the players that spoke after the game. These are the issues that the players will be looking to improve on next week in practice. The Big Elks next game will be played against the Tulsa (Edison) Eagles from class 6A. Both teams will come in with a record of 1-1. The game will be 7 p.m. Friday at Big Elk Stadium. Horticulture Tips Greg Hartman Beckham County Extension Landscape Watch for fall specials at garden centers and nurseries since fall is a great time for planting many ornamentals. Choose spring flowering bulbs as soon as available. Plant cool-season annuals like pansies, ornamental cabbage or kale, snapdragons and dusty miller when temperatures begin to cool. Watch for and control any late infestations of tree webworms. Twig girdler insects should be controlled if large numbers of small branches of elms, pecans, or persimmons are uniformly girdled from the tree and fall to the ground. Begin to reduce the amount of light on outside tropical houseplants by placing them under shade trees before bringing them indoors for the winter. Vegetables You have all of September to plant cool-season vegetables like spinach, leaf lettuce, mustard and radishes, and until the middle of September to plant rutabagas, Swiss chard, garlic and turnips. Lawn Last nitrogen fertilizer ap- plication of the year on warmseason grasses should be applied no later than Sept. 15. Winter broadleaf weeds like dandelion will begin to emerge in late September, which is also the best time to control them with a 2, 4-D type herbicide. If pre-emergent control of winter-annual weeds (henbit, chickweed, annual bluegrass, etc.) is desired in lawns, the application should be completed by the 2nd week of September. Note: Do not treat areas that will be seeded in the fall. If you are in that crowd, keep in mind a shelter needs to provide adequate safety, account for your family’s needs and comfort and work well with your current residence, said Gina Peek, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension housing and consumer specialist. “When it comes to choosing a shelter you’ve got to know your family and your home,” Peek said. “How many people will use the shelter? Are you caring for someone with special needs or who requires extra attention? Do you live in a rural or urban area? Will digging directly underneath the house compromise the structure or utilities? All of these types of details will factor into your plans.” And, of course, most of us cannot ignore cost. Not surprisingly, retrofitting an existing home typically is more expensive than incorporating a shelter as part of a new build. The good news is there is a workable option for just about every household. Shelters come in a range of sizes and can be constructed from variety of materials such as fiberglass, polyethylene, concrete and steel. One option is to build a safe room designed per specifications outlined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the publication, “Taking shelter from the storm: Building a safe room for your home or small business,” or FEMA P-320. “FEMA P-320 safe rooms can be built in the basement, on the primary level of your house or underground,” said Scott Frazier, OSU Extension energy management engineer. “No matter where you decide to build it, the idea is to create a room within a room or underground, with walls, floor and ceiling separate from the rest of the house.” Plans and materials list for FEMA P-320 safe rooms may be downloaded for free at www.fema.gov. Other viable shelters designed to meet the FEMA P-320 standards are available, as well. Although there is not a certifying agency for storm shelters, the National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA) and the National Storm Shelter Registry (NSSR) do provide recommendations for building the structures. Most people will rely on a contractor to construct their shelter, and consumers also can check to see if a particular company is a member of both or either the NSSA or NSSR. “Once you settle on a contractor, discuss the project in detail with the company before the work starts. Make sure you understand exactly what’s going to happen,” Frazier said. “Shelters do come with warranties so be sure to ask about that aspect as well.” After your shelter or safe room is completed, organize practice drills so family members know exactly what to do before the storm hits. The drills also can help people better deal with their issues with small confined spaces, and may be practiced as a game for small children. Finally, be sure to register the location of your shelter with the appropriate county officials. If your county does not maintain a registry, give the information to a family member or friend, preferably someone who lives out-of-state, so they can alert authorities in the event of an emergency. SEND YOUR CLASSIFIEDS TO CLASSIFIEDS@ ECDAILYNEWS.COM 405-409-6694 CROSSWORD TV ez TV LOCAL TV LISTINGS FOR YOUR HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER ‘Sleepy Hollow’ gives Ichabod Crane a Rip Van Winkle twist Sunday, September 15, 2013 The Elk City Daily News • Elk City, Oklahoma By Kate O’Hare © Zap2it Faced with the prospect of taking Washington Irving’s iconic character Ichabod Crane into the 21st century, Alex Kurtzman knew there was one thing he must resolutely avoid. “We’ve done a lot of time-travel movies,” he says, referring to himself and his writing/producing partner Robert Orci, “and we’re like, ‘Please, don’t make us do time travel. It’s too much.’ ” Starting Monday, Sept. 16, on Fox, Kurtzman and Orci’s latest project, “Sleepy Hollow,” takes Crane and his nemesis, the Headless Horseman, and Crane’s love Katrina, from Irving’s original 1820 story, puts them out of commission for about two-and-a-half centuries and then resurrects them in the modern-day suburban New York town. British actor Tom Mison stars as Crane, who’s been transformed into a two-fisted English emigrant who participates in the Revolutionary War. But when Crane beheads a fearsome soldier and loses his life (apparently) in the bargain, he is hidden in the earth. Then he and the now-Headless Horseman rise again in the present to find the world in peril from a metaphysical war, and he may be the only hope to stop it. “We loved the idea of digging into the myth,” says Kurtzman, who’s sitting at a restaurant table in Beverly Hills with Mison and Jones. “Halloween is my personal favorite holiday. “I loved the idea of doing a show where every episode felt like it was Halloween, and then digging into the possibility of a man who had been stopped, suspended at a moment in time where America had not yet been formed, only to come into it all these years later and see what it had become. “That was really exciting, too, the idea that the mysteries of the present are informed by his experiences in the past.” Ichabod soon realizes that the Headless Horseman is wreaking havoc, and the whole situation is bound up in the biblical Book of Revelation, the Freemasons and a version of Purgatory, where his late wife, Katrina (Katia Winter), is trapped. Luckily, Crane winds up in a partnership with local police Detective Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie), who has had her share of supernatural experiences. That includes losing her mentor and father figure, Sheriff August Corbin (Clancy Brown), to the Horseman. Page 3, Section C “With Abbie,” says Mison, “we realized quite early on that we had a mutual aim. We both are asking similar questions, and we both need the answers. So, they’re thrust together. She has a past that she needs to keep secret, and she quickly realizes Ichabod is the only one who could ever think she’s anything beyond crazy. “And vice-versa, she’s the only one who has seen the Headless Horseman, so she actually believes Ichabod. So, they’re forced into this partnership, and it just so happens they work rather well together.” On the other side, Abbie’s boss, police Capt. Frank Irving (Orlando Jones), prefers his explanations to be grounded in the real world. Says Mison, “Hovering over Abbie is this chap” — he indicates Jones — “who is the guy who keeps forcing doubt into her head, whereas Ichabod is trying to help her find the truth. He’s pushing doubt into her head.” “I’m using very specific tools to do it,” says Jones, “which is the truth. It really is problematic to explain to someone that there is a gentleman running around chopping people’s heads off with a blade over 500 degrees. “So, I’m forcing doubt in her head but also trying to tell her that if she expects to continue down this path, there are rules to how she plays the game. It’s just unclear which side of that fence I’m really on at this juncture.” And when is a Headless Horseman not just a headless horseman? “What if,” says Kurtzman, “was one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? That would certainly open up a lot of doors for us. So, I think we got excited by that.” As for the Freemasons, Kurtzman says, “George Washington was, in fact, a Mason. They all were at the time. Clearly, they were keeping a lot of secrets, and those secrets have endured over time. “Certainly our show’s not the first to touch on the subject. So, the idea is that you’re combining those two mythologies, and you’re saying that the war you read about in the textbooks was really only half the battle. “In fact, there was a separate war going on, a war between good and evil, and that the Revolutionary War was really just a small piece of that much, much larger puzzle. You look at the Book of Revelation, and you talk about a seven-year period of tribulation that will determine whether or not humanity is saved or lost. “That’s already seven years of storytelling. Forget about if the Devil loses at the end, he’s going to come back and want more. So, we can go on and on.” Back to school! _ TBS Dr. Phil Fresh Prince The View Fresh Prince Fresh Prince Fresh Prince Rachael Ray NewsChannel 4 at Noon The Doctors Steve Harvey The Chew According Wipeout to Jim General Hospital The Cleve- American land Show Dad ( WGN- Matlock A In the Heat of the Night In the Heat of the Night WGN Midday News Live! (CC) In Focus ‘The Watsons Go to Birmingham’ taking viewers to 1963 Want your ad in living rooms all week? “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” By Jacqueline Cutler © Zap2it In a summer fraught with hate and strife, the Watsons reacted with love and kindness. They were but one family, and a fictional one at that. But the Newbery Medal-winning book “The Watsons Go to Birmingham,” perfectly captures the drama of the civil rights movement. And Hallmark Channel perfectly captures Christopher Paul Curtis’ book in its Friday, Sept. 20, movie. “The real heartbeat of this movie is love,” says Anika Noni Rose (“Dreamgirls,” “The Good Wife”). “This family loves each other so hard.” “Wilona loves her husband enough to leave her central unit, her family, and go someplace she does not know or understand,” Rose says of her character. “She loves her children enough to uproot them and bring them to another place, which is almost another time.” Using period cars and costumes, director Kenny Leon focuses on the huge issues through the filter of a family. Set in 1963, this opens in Flint, Mich., where 12-year-old narrator Kenny (Bryce Clyde Jenkins) tells of a long, cold winter in a year of social upheaval and overdue change. Kenny, whose clothes could have been the inspiration for Urkel, is a sweet, nervous middle child. He loves books and is frequently a target of the tougher kids. His older brother, Byron (Harrison Knight), is looking for trouble, which of course he finds. Byron is angry, sullen and hanging out with the wrong guys. Kenny’s younger sister, Joetta (Skai Jackson), is the adorable, doted-upon baby girl of the family. And, Dad (Wood Harris) is an affable guy who adores his wife and kids. The film does a great job of showing the styles of the times: Kenny, in his bow tie and huge black-rimmed glasses; Joey, in her starched dresses with Peter Pan collars; and Mom, always put together. The Watsons drive from Flint to Birmingham, Ala., because Wilona misses her mom and needs her help setting Byron straight. En route, radio news alerts them of Medgar Evers’ murder. Bombs have been going off. Racism is rife and the country is on edge. It’s a wonderful reunion with Wilona’s mom, played by the formidable LaTanya Richardson Jackson. Initially, Wilona is put off by her mom’s boyfriend, Robert (David Alan Grier). As a child reared in Detroit, Grier had marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., during the March on Poverty in Detroit. “I remember the general mood,” Grier says. He recalls his parents moving the 19-inch TV into the living room, and watching the March on Washington on Aug. 28, 1963. “When we marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in Detroit, we wanted to play,” Grier recalls. “My brother and sister and I had to put on Sunday clothes, which was a drag. My mom and dad told us it was very important we do this as a family and to stop wiggling. This is going down. I was watching huge throngs of people, and I was rewarded with an ice cream cone.” Grier’s recollection is precisely what a child would remember and the very spirit the movie embraces. It never condescends to a younger audience. The adults know the situation is dire, but they don’t shield the children from the truth. For Kenny and his siblings, 1963 Birmingham is so foreign. Grier’s character, Robert, and the grandmother try to explain the ways of the South to these northern children. The Watson kids have never been denied food at a lunch counter or had to use “colored only” bathrooms. Byron, not surprisingly, is ready to fight for his rights. But his elders guide him, teaching him to fight without using fists. Byron, who adores his younger brother, becomes a man that summer by saving Kenny’s life and later explaining to him that life isn’t fair, as Kenny suffers flashbacks from a horrifying act of terrorism. Beloved little sister Joey is in the 16th Street Baptist Street Church when it is bombed. Three girls were murdered and one was blinded in the actual bombing. Kenny had walked Joey to the church for early choir practice. She was happily wearing brand new Mary Janes. When Kenny, like most people in town, race to the church after the explosion, he espies in the rubble shiny patent leather Mary Janes and is scarred. Certain his sister has been killed, Kenny retreats. All little girl in 1963 wore Mary Janes for dress-up shoes, and it was another little girl’s feet he saw. The film expertly weaves in black-and-white footage of cops spraying protestors with fire hoses and siccing their dogs on crowds of people fighting for their rights. There’s Alabama Gov. George Wallace making his infamous speech: “Segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever.” Certainly we know where this chapter of history ends, but seeing it played out through the eyes of this family is a treat. “You want young people” to watch, Grier says. “It is a family endeavor. What would be best is a family sits down and watches it. And then this sparks conversation. That is ideally what we would like.” Advertise here! 225-3000 Activities Sunday, September 15, 2013 The Elk City Daily News • Elk City, Oklahoma Page 7, Section C Second grader is all alone facing schoolyard bullies Dear Abby DEAR ABBY: I’m 8 years old and in second grade. I’m writing because I’m being bullied at school. I’m really smart, and at my school that’s a really bad thing. I try hard to be nice, but here that’s worse than being smart. The teachers didn’t help me with Garfield the bullies, so I stopped telling them. My mom told everyone she could about the bullies, but nobody helps. It keeps getting worse over time. Every day someone picks on me, pushes me or makes fun of me. Please help me. FEELING TORN IN TEXAS DEAR FEELING TORN: Because you haven’t told your teachers that the bullying hasn’t stopped, they may think that it’s no longer going on. Tell them again what you are experiencing, and be sure your mother knows. She should discuss this with your teacher. If things don’t get better, she needs to talk to the principal and, if necessary, the school board. Many schools offer programs that discourage bullying and train students who can help. As a last resort, your mother should consult a lawyer. You have a right to an education that’s free from this kind of pressure. Lawsuits have been filed and won because school districts didn’t give it the attention they should have. Be sure to show this to your mother and tell her you wrote it. “just a little” won’t hurt them -- or worse, that the problem is imaginary. Your sister and brother-in-law do not understand phobias. A medical professional might be able to explain it to them, but until they’re ready to consult one and really listen, it would be healthier for you to ignore them and limit your time with them. DEAR ABBY: I am agoraphobic. Although I have managed to make accommodations for special occasions like birthday parties and dinners with my family, I am not comfortable at extremely large gatherings. My parents understand this, but my sister and brother-in-law think that if I’d just “try harder,” everything would work out. Abby, I must take a mild tranquilizer to go to small gatherings, and I have told them this. Would people tell someone who is allergic to something to just “try harder”? How can I explain this better? AFRAID IN TAYLORSVILLE, UTAH DEAR ABBY: My wife and I disagree about when and where it is acceptable to yawn. I believe a public yawn during dinner or conversation is not appropriate. She sees no reason why a natural human trait such as yawning should be stifled. Again, my assertion is that yawning denotes boredom or lack of interest in what people are conversing about or doing. What are your thoughts? NOT A YAWNER IN FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ. DEAR AFRAID: I’m sorry to say this, but individuals have been known to give people with severe food allergies items containing their “trigger foods” because they are convinced DEAR NOT A YAWNER: My thoughts are similar to an observation made by English writer G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936), who said, “A yawn is a silent shout.” I have never seen anyone who is intensely interested in something yawn, and to do it in the presence of others implies that the yawner is tired, bored or otherwise not fully engaged.
