Visitor Centre
September. It has been a fantastic summer especially having the Farmer’s Market in Beattie
Park twice a week! Hats off to the vendors that
came out each and every venue. Harvest season
is the best time of the year. Hopefully you’re
getting items ready for the September 12 Fall
Fair (Saturday). There are many categories to
choose from with everything from produce to
canning to photography to pet show. If you want
to peruse the categories we have the Fall Fair
Regulation booklets and exhibit tags.
Hudson’s Hope reunion came and went and all the attendees had a great time
catching up. Weather cooperated and did you know there are extra “Hudson’s
Hope Reunion 2015” hats left over. You can find those at Legacy Village Market.
And if you want a Hudson’s Hope 210th birthday pin they are available at the Visitor
Centre for $3 and keychains for $5. Our stock of t-shirts and hoodies are dwindling
but maybe we still have your size. The Visitor Centre is open daily 8:30am to 5pm
till September 30th
Hudson’s Hope Visitor Centre
Kathy, Christopher and Joey
On August 15 of this year the Visitor Centre participated in an event organized by
Chetwynd Visitor Centre. It was the third
Community to Community Motorcycle
Poker Ride. We had six registrants at our
visitor centre and after the winning poker
hand was drawn we managed to raise
$90 for the charity of our choice. We
chose Friends of Hudson’s Hope as the
recipient of our fund raising. We are
proud of the work they do; a necessity in
any community. On behalf of the Visitor
Centre and District of Hudson’s Hope, pictured here is Kathy Burseth, Visitor Centre manager presenting Patti Campbell,
Administrator Friends of Hudson’s Hope
with the proceeds from the motorcycle
poker ride.

Temporary Librarian Assistant – We’re so happy to have Teresa Summer on our library team this
summer! Teresa showed loads of enthusiasm while running the children’s Summer Reading Club as
the primary facilitator in the first two weeks of August, and in collaboration with Toby for the last
two weeks. She put in a great amount of time getting this month’s book display ready as well. We
would like to extend a huge thank you to Teresa Summer for all of the work and time she put in to
Summer Reading Club you have been a fantastic addition to our staff! We wish you all the best with
your schooling over the next year!
Blind Date With a Book –
September’s book display is a
great way to try a genre that you
may not normally try, read an old
favorite, or get yourself out of a
reading slump. To start our book
selection, Nancy, Theresa, Toby
and I have chosen a handful of
items from our collection to set
you up on your first blind date!
How to Participate:
Step 1: find one of your favorite books from our shelves
Step 2: Write up a wrapper blurb
Step 3: Give steps 1 and 2 to a staff member
Step 4: Choose your blind date
Step 5: Check out your date
Step 6: Go home (or not ;)
Step 7: Unwrap your date!
Enjoy!
Summer Reading Club – We had 38 children registered for our Summer Reading Club Program
that ran in August. With the ‘Build It’ theme, children were kept busy with many fun building challenges involving robots, clay, Lego, popsicle sticks, spaghetti and marshmallows and much more!
Each child took home a fabulous prize, a completion certificate and a medal! Final numbers were
not in at the time of the Bulletin publication, but our mid-point numbers show over 150 books read
in our younger group and over 10,000 pages read in our older group.
After School Club & Storytime – With summer coming to an end, it is time for our Children’s Programs to start up again. Storytime for children ages 2 – 5 (accompanied by a parent/caregiver) will
begin on Tuesday, September 15th from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. and continue to run on Tuesdays
throughout the school year. Library Club for school-aged children 6 years and up will begin again on
Wednesday, September 16th from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. and continue to run on Wednesdays throughout
the school year.

Congratulations to Coleman Mercereau who
completed the Canadian Death Race on
August 1st. He completed the 125 km race
in 24 hours, which included three mountain
summits and over 17,000 feet of elevation
change. We are so proud of him and his
accomplishment!! Go Death Racer!
A Perfect Hand
On July 29th,

regular Wednesday night crib

THANK YOU!
The Friends of Hudson’s Hope would like to extend a big thank you to the District of Hudson’s
Hope for the $500.00 operating grant. It will go
a long way to helping the people in our community.
Our laundromat is getting an upgrade. The 1st
set of new stacking dryers has arrived thanks to
the generous donations from North Peace Savings & Credit Union, BC Hydro and the Co-Op.
We should have them installed by the end of
August. Our goal is to replace all of the aging
dryers over the next few years.
As hunting season is approaching the Friends of
Hudson’s Hope would like to ask all hunters to
consider donating any extra meat to our Food
Bank. The food bank has been busy and our
meat supplies are low. Just give us a call and we
will arrange pick up and cutting & wrapping.
We would like to remind everyone that our annual food drive is coming up in October. Your support is greatly appreciated. Watch for posters
announcing the day.

District of Hudson’s Hope
September is Fall Fair, Back to
School, Kaleidoscope of Color, First
Frost, and man and animal alike
rushing to get ready for winter. A
favorite month for many people.
Fall Fair:
The annual Fall Fair signals an end
to summer in Hudson’s Hope. It’s
the last outdoor community gathering and seems to draw the curtain
on summer and open the door to
fall and winter.
Saturday, September 12 is the
date.
Hudson’s Hope Arena is the
place.
There’s the vintage car show, pet
parade, garden and craft competitions, tallest sunflower contest, live
entertainment, loggers’ sports, and
the grad class BBQ. There will be
vendor tables and for this day only,
the Farmers’ Market will set up at
the Arena rather than at Beattie
Park. The kids’ train will wind its
way around the field and bouncy
activities will be set up inside.
Time to catch up with friends and
neighbours you haven’t seen for
awhile.
A busy family fun day!
The Bulletin
Site C Meeting:
In July, Hudson’s Hope asked for a
community sit-down meeting with
representatives of the Site C project.
That was tentatively scheduled but
then cancelled when BC Hydro cancelled all public interaction on Site C
until September.
Council has requested a “sit-down
meeting” on September 30. At time
of this writing, we have not yet received a response.
Induced Earthquakes:
In December, 2014, the BC Oil & Gas
Commission (OGC) released a report
entitled Investigation of Observed
Seismicity in the Montney Trend.
(Link: https://www.bcogc.ca/
node/12291/download)
Hudson’s Hope is right on the western edge of the Montney Basin.
The report says that between August, 2013 and October, 2014, there
were 231 seismic events attributed
to oil and gas operations in the Montney Basin, 38 induced by wastewater
disposal and 193 by hydraulic fracturing operations. (P 6).
The Report also says that “there is a
22
September 2015
son’s Hope Council News
higher occurrence of seismicity in
the disturbed belt of the Rocky
Mountain foothills…..” The greater
likelihood of earthquakes in this area is because the foothills contain
numerous faults that are already
stressed and so are subject to being
reactivated. Hudson’s Hope is next
to or in places, part of, the foothills
and the presentations GW Solutions
has done here show a number of
fractures inside the municipality. A
map on page 9 of the OGC report
shows 5 areas where induced earthquakes have been most common
thus far. One is just northeast of
us.
And two weeks ago, on August 17, there
was a 4.5 magnitude earthquake just
north of Wonowon. The OGC indicates
the cause is still under investigation but
said it was likely related to natural gas
extraction operations.
So what does all that mean for Hudson’s
Hope? Well, who knows for sure? But
the seismic events seem to be growing
in frequency and magnitude and as the
level of activity increases near us, we
may expect to see some events locally.
Happy Autumn, and hope everyone is
able to take advantage of the wonderful
weather and get outside!
Once a rarity, earthquakes in our
area are becoming quite common:
On November 5,6, 2013, there was
a cluster of 14 low magnitude
earthquakes in the Upper Halfway
area.
Mayor Gwen Johansson
DISTRICT OF HUDSON'S HOPE
In July, 2014, there was a 3.8
earthquake in the Montney Basin
and the company operating nearby
was ordered to reduce the amount
of fluid being injected.
In August, 2014, there was a 4.4
earthquake felt in Fort St John and
Fort Nelson.

Police Report:
August 2015
Over the last month, Hudson’s Hope RCMP Detachment responded to approximately
41 calls for service. Hudson’s Hope RCMP members continued with traffic enforcement efforts throughout the area and issued several violation tickets and written
warnings to drivers.
Some incidents of note during the month are as follows:
On August 4th, 2015, Hudson’s Hope RCMP was alerted to a stolen vehicle in Fort St.
John that may be heading into Hudson’s Hope. The vehicle was subsequently located and a male occupant of that vehicle was arrested. Police have recommended
three charges against the male who is scheduled to appear in court in September.
On August 5th, 2015, Hudson’s Hope RCMP was advised of a break and enter and
theft at the local YRB yard near Hudson’s Hope. Police responded and obtained
statements from employees who detailed the break in and theft of a YRB vehicle and
other items inside. Fort St John RCMP Forensic Identification Service was called to
assist in processing the scene. The YRB vehicle was located later in the morning and
police are continuing to investigate the incident.
On August 11th, 2015, Hudson’s Hope RCMP responded to an ATV collision on private
property near Farrell Creek Road. The female driver of that ATV had succumbed to
serious injuries sustained from the collision. An RCMP Traffic Analyst and BC Coroner Service were called to the scene to assist investigators with the ongoing investigation.
On August 17th, 2015, Hudson’s Hope RCMP was advised of a vehicle on fire on Canyon Drive at the pullout near Beryl Prairie Road. A commercial dump truck was engulfed in flames when police arrived at the scene. The cause of the fire is unknown
at this time.
On August 21st, 2015, Hudson’s Hope RCMP was advised of an active brush fire near
Halfway River that was approaching the Highway. Police alerted local fire officials
and the Ministry of Forests. Hudson’s Hope RCMP would like to recognize the efforts
of local volunteers who assisted in quickly gaining control of the fire and prevented it
from reaching forested areas. The file remains under investigation to speak with
possible witnesses.

BACK TO SCHOOL
Hudson’s Hope RCMP would like to remind drivers to be vigilant of pedestrians, especially young school students, who will be walking along and crossing local roads and
streets during the upcoming school year.
The Hudson’s Hope RCMP will be strictly enforcing road safety on all roads and school
zones in an effort to educate drivers and maintain safety for pedestrians.
Parents are encouraged to discuss road safety with their children. Some basic tips are
as follows:







Look left-right-left and shoulder check before crossing.
Make eye contact with drivers and keep looking for approaching vehicles while
crossing.
Listen. Remove your headphones so
you can hear approaching traffic that
may be hard to see.
Be seen. Wear reflective materials or
bright clothes and use lights after
dark.
Walk on the inside edge of the sidewalk away from the road. If there's
no sidewalk - walk facing oncoming

The Bulletin
Things get a little crazy on the roads during the
school year: Buses are everywhere, kids on bikes
are hurrying to get to school before the bell rings,
harried parents are trying to drop their kids off
before work.
It’s never more important for drivers to slow
down and pay attention than when kids are present—especially before and after school.
If You’re Dropping Off
Schools often have very specific drop-off procedures for the school year. Make sure you know them
for the safety of all kids. More children are hit by cars near schools than at any other location, according to the National Safe Routes to School program. The following apply to all school zones:
 Don’t double park; it blocks visibility for other children and vehicles
 Don’t load or unload children across the street from the school
 Carpool to reduce the number of vehicles at the school
Sharing the Road with Young Pedestrians
According to research by the National Safety Council, most of the children who lose their lives in
bus-related incidents are 4 to 7 years old, and they’re walking. They are hit by the bus, or by a
motorist illegally passing a stopped bus. A few precautions go a long way toward keeping children
safe:
 Don’t block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing
pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic
 In a school zone when flasher are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk and intersection
 Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign
 Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in
all residential areas
 Don’t honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way
 Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians
 Always use extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians
wherever they may be, no matter who has the right of way
Sharing the Road with School Buses
If you’re driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if you
were driving behind a car. It will give you more time to stop once the yellow
lights start flashing. It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or
unload children.
 Never pass a bus from behind—or from either direction if you’re on an undivided road—if it
is stopped to load or unload children.
 If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop
 The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough
back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus
 Be alert; children often are unpredictable, and they tend to ignore hazards
