OVERVIEW
CAS stands for Creativity, Action and Service. It
is an important part of the non-academic life of
the school and we value contributions in each of
these three areas highly. All students at West Island
School are expected to be involved in CAS; students
can get involved in activities both inside and outside
of school, as well as during Horizons Week when
lessons are suspended for five days and students have
the opportunity to take part in a broad range of activities
that are not normally available through the daily timetable.
Horizons Week is a compulsory part of our broader curriculum
and attendance is therefore mandatory. Students should attempt to
participate in Horizons Week activities in each of the areas of creativity,
action and service over the seven years they are with us at WIS.

- 1 20
This brochure contains an overview of the activities on offer for Horizons Week 2015. Parents
and students should look at the range of opportunities which are available and consider
options and costs before students register online through Gateway for their preferred activity.
Students going into Year 8 will take part in the new Year 8 Create Week and will follow a
slightly different process. They will be asked to make three choices; any one of which may be
selected for them. Registration must be completed during the allocated sign up sessions for
each year group.
Some courses will be oversubscribed and others may be withdrawn if an insufficient number
of students sign up. Please note that it is not possible for students to change their minds once
they have made a choice. Once the groups have been sorted, students will be contacted
with details of the activity they have been allocated. Students will not be confirmed on an
activity until the deposit has been paid and required documentation received – the
deadline for this is 22 May 2015.
Please note that all costs, especially for overseas trips, are provisional at this stage and may
go up or down, depending on the number of students who finally sign up for each activity or
trip. Over the coming eight months there are also likely to be changes in fuel surcharges and
currency fluctuations which are out of our control.
In order for students to receive a high quality and fun learning experience while ensuring that
each activity represents the best value for money, the school works diligently to achieve the
most cost effective fares, accommodation and activity prices. To do this, we often block book
in advance and have to accept service providers’ inflexible cancellation policies. Therefore,
cancellations and changes cause severe problems to the organisation of Horizons Week
activities, in particular with the budgeting of the actual activity. It is unreasonable for the
school or for other parents to cover the increased proportion of costs should an individual
withdraw from a trip or activity. Therefore, in order to be fair to all, we have to impose certain
regulations. It is very important that parents take notice of our Horizons Week Policy and
understand the commitment they make on registration. The Policy can be found at the end
of this brochure - click here.
Out of the varied activities listed in the brochure, we hope there is something to challenge and
engage everyone during Horizons Week 2015. If you would like further information, please
approach the organising teacher.

YEAR 7 CAMP
OVERVIEW
HONG KONG
YEAR 7 CAMP
LEADERS
OVERVIEW
Year 7 Camp continues and year on year just gets even better.
New experiences, new friendships and new skills are just three
reasons why we take all Year 7 students to Lantau during our
Horizons Week. The 5 days 4 nights camping extravaganza is hosted
by the Treasure Island Group (TIG), based at Pui O beach on Lantau.
Students will face new challenges, being involved in a wide range of
activities including gorging, hiking and kayaking.
West Island has worked closely with TIG for the past five years, each year even
better than the next. Year 7 Camp 2015 is sure to be the best week ever.
Year 12 and 13 students are invited to apply for the prestigious
role of Year 7 Camp Student Leader. On successful application
students will be expected to attend the Youth Leadership Training
(YLT) Weekend (25 – 27 September 2015) in Pui O on Lantau Island.
The training camp will focus on developing leaders’ creativity, action and
leadership skills and will also allow them to experience the activities Year 7
students will be undertaking during the Horizons Week. On graduation from
the camp, leaders will be the official advisors on the Year 7 Camp.
Enthusiasm, commitment and skills are necessary for this post. The training will be
vigorous; developing leadership skills, relationship management and behaviours to motivate and inspire the younger
generation.
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
Youth leaders will be going through vigorous training to develop
leadership skills, establish relationship in the team and how to motivate
younger students.

YEAR 8 CREATE
A VISIT TO STORY PLANET
OVERVIEW
OVERVIEW
Day 1: Meet in Hong Kong Park and create a few drawings in work
journals, take photos videos etc to record certain elements of their
surroundings. Have lunch, discuss drawings, then move to another
location for the afternoon.
Calling all space cadets! Are you a bit of a dreamer? If you spend half
your time living in your imagination, we want you.
Day 2: Back at WIS, develop own drawings into a series of prints.
A group of creative people will spend a week creating amazing stories and
scripts. And they’ll learn the secrets of successful writing with Nury Vittachi,
one of Asia’s most widely published authors.
Day 3: In the morning, print any images and finish any that haven’t been
printed etc. In the afternoon create a mixed-media image that has been
developed from both the drawings and the prints. Students can use a variety of
materials, collage, wire, tissue plaster etc.
It won’t be just a roomful of nerdy people
doing writing exercises. We’ll use fun, interactive
techniques to create comics and book ideas and
playlets, and we’ll also brainstorm ideas for movies and
games.
Day 4: Individually using all previous work as inspiration, design a sculpture, looking
at the shapes and forms in their work. After some designs have been done, get put into
groups, then discuss designs and work collaboratively to design a joint sculpture. In the
afternoon start making the sculpture using card, wire, found objects, plaster etc.
Day 5: Finish building group sculpture, individual and group reflections on the week. In the afternoon – an art exhibition at WIS.
If you’ve already got a great idea for a book or a movie, bring it
along and show an expert. If you’re not sure how creative you are, learn
ways to boost your imagination. At the end of the week, you’ll have a great narrative outline and
storyboard drafted out ready to turn into your first real book, comic book, movie or game.
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
An exciting week where you can explore your creativity through sketching, print making and sculpting. Work with a team to
create a giant sculpture and display your work at the WIS creative exhibition.
Get those creative juices flowing and write the story of your life!

OVERVIEW
This week will be focused on technology skill development, creative
application and creative thinking.
During the week the aim of the morning sessions is to produce and rehearse the performance. You will work specifically on

What will I learn? Web Development: Learning technique, coding on
open source tools and platforms, HTML, CSS, Javascript Design and
Aesthetics, how to create the look and feel of websites and consider how
people will use them.
The aim of the afternoon sessions is to give you the experience of being responsible for all aspects of producing a
performance. You can specialise in an area that interests you such as costume, marketing or music. As a company you will be
provided with a small budget, which you will have to allocate between teams and at the end of the day each group will have to
report back in a Production Meeting.

POTTY ABOUT POTTERY
OVERVIEW
Clay is a wonderful and tactile medium for students to experience three dimensional factors
about structure, shapes and forms. Students will have the opportunity to work with clay on a
wheel-thrown and hand-build project by learning the techniques and secrets of this ancient
art form from ceramic artist Conrad Li. Students will be introduced to a number of ceramic
techniques while they learn to think about their ideas and adapt to change along the way.
These techniques include using the potter’s wheel, surface decoration, sculptural and handbuilding handles, lids, sprouts, etc.
OVERVIEW
Students will learn how to write and perform original music through improvisation, group composition and music
technology. Students work together in small groups under the direction of music staff to create and perform their
own music. During the week students will develop musical, composition and performance skills.
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
Pottery is a skill of shaping and moulding clay with hands and various
tools, and using fire to harden the clay. The benefits of pottery are
numerous – sensory development, motor skills, self-esteem, selfexpression, problem-solving skills, discipline and pride.
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
Students will learn to how play and perform songs which you compose with the help of professional
artists from the UK. They will help you write your own songs and perform them integrating latest
music technology. You must be able to sing or play an instrument in a rock band.

CROSSROADS

HONG KONG
GAME DESIGN AND
PROGRAMMING
OVERVIEW
This service experience will begin before Horizons Week when we
plan and collect donations to deliver to the Crossroads Foundation.
These donations are sorted out on the Monday, and we volunteer
our services at the Crossroads village Tuesday - Friday. Activities may
include helping out in the warehouse with packing, sorting, renovation,
maintenance and gardening. Students will also participate in the Global
X-perience which gives volunteers the chance to gain insight into the lives
of the people who receive our shipments, in a personal way, through simulated
activities.
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
Do you want to make a difference to the lives of people in need? Do you want to learn about how you can do more to
help? Then volunteer your services at the Crossroads Foundation.
OVERVIEW
Students will create either their own computer game or a digitised
story - ideally one that explores a current social, economic or
cultural issue - targeting specific charities and their efforts. Using
a free Java-based programming package developed by MIT,
students will undertake market research, create a design brief
and develop their game before testing and amending based on
feedback.
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
The gaming industry is now bigger than the film industry. Looking
ahead, programming skills will become even more important in the
modern workplace. The principles of coding are clearly explained
and developed through the program students will use to develop
their games all in a relaxed and fun environment.

KOTA KINABALU
OVERVIEW
This trip is an action packed excursion to the Sabah region of Malaysia
found on the Island of Borneo. The students will be physically tested in
climbing South East Asia’s highest peak, Mount Kinabalu. Students not only
have to be physically fit enough to climb to the top, but there is the added
challenge of coping with the altitude which can affect the most physically fit people.
This is a challenging but rewarding action activity for all participants. Students wil be
expected to complete some group hikes in Hong Kong arranged prior to the trip.
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
Diving is a fantastic, peaceful hobby that affords you an unparalleled opportunity to explore the world beneath the
waves. Choose Dive into Borocay to learn new skills, make amazing memories and forge new friendships.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
•
Any student who has or has had a medical condition which may potentially affect their ability to dive safely will be
required to undergo a medical to ensure they are fit to dive safely. This will be screened for by the school but the
responsibility for undergoing the medical will be the parent’s.
• Students under the age of 15 are not allowed to enter the Philippines
unaccompanied by their parents unless they present a document obtained
in advance from the Philippine Embassy called a ‘waiver of exclusion’
form. More information on obtaining this will follow but the responsibility for
obtaining it will lie with the parents.
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
Without a doubt the highlight of this trip is the ascent of the 4095m Mount Kinabalu - a challenging two day hike
to view the sun rise from the summit of SE Asia’s highest peak. In addition the students also participate on a
day’s mountain biking and a day’s white water rafting, a canopy walk through the primary jungle and a day hike in
preparation for the summit attempt.

OVERSEAS
VIETNAM SERVICE
OVERVIEW
Our trip to Vietnam is a truly
eye-opening experience.
There are four main service
tasks that we do. Painting at
the one of the village schools
of Nam Sai, building fences, paving a
concrete playground for the students to play in during
wet season and planting trees for shade, for wood and to build
sustainable structures in the future. We are able to live at the local homes with
villagers as well and experience their life style and rich culture.
Throughout the course of the trip, we learn to speak Vietnamese, mix concrete and make
friends whilst eating good food as well as developing an appreciation for nature when hiking to
the village. Travelling is a major part of the trip, and we sleep on a cosy overnight train to and from Nam
Sai, enjoy numerous bus rides through the mountains and stay on a junk for two days, floating around the peaceful
and stunning Halong Bay at the end of our trip.
The opportunity to improve the lives of others and enhance education
experiences in impoverished areas is an incredible privilege and
is guaranteed to be a life- changing experience. The students will
come back from the trip with new friends, incredible memories and
as more mature, socially aware global citizens. The value of the trip
will reach into many parts of the students’ lives and the cross-cultural
relationships developed will be a source of happiness and inspiration
for many years to come. West Island school also benefits from
developing links and relationships across the world and becoming
part of a bigger global network.
WHY SELECT THIS ACTIVITY?
We undertake new challenges and work collaboratively with others. We demonstrate
perseverance and commitment by working hard at our service task for two solid days.
We play games with local village children and the joy they express is unforgettable.
We donate many useful things to the local residents and the joy of giving to others is
inspirational for WIS students. Vietnam Service is a great opportunity to develop new
skills and to enhance each WIS students’ individual personal development.

HORIZONS WEEK POLICY
Please read the following before making decisions and before making any payments.
Once an activity has been allocated you are bound by this policy.
• Students select their preferred Horizons Week activity and sign up via Gateway.
• A deposit is required by Friday 22 May to secure your child’s place on their chosen activity. By paying the
deposit and securing your child’s place, parents are committing to paying the full cost of the
activity. Payment is made via ePayment.
• If the deposit has not been received by the school at the specified deadline, your child will automatically be
removed from the chosen activity. A local or school-based activity will then be allocated subject to availability
and in consultation with your child. Parents will be informed accordingly.
Scenario B
1. Student B puts in a request to withdraw from a local or school-based activity is reallocated to another.
2. The deposit paid for the original chosen activity will be forfeited.
3. Full payment will be required for the new activity.
4. The balance payment for the original activity may also be required subject to what the school can negotiate
with the service provider.
Scenario C
• All deposits paid are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
1. Student C has signed up for an activity which requires one to be physically fit and mobile. Unfortunately
Student C gets injured and is no longer able to participate.
• Once we have received your deposit for a local or an overseas activity, we will confirm the number of
participants with our service providers to attain the best prices and a deposit will be paid to secure the booking.
2. The deposit paid for the original chosen activity will be forfeited.
• If having paid the deposit your child applies to withdraw from an activity, local or overseas, every effort will be
made to find a suitable alternative local or school-based activity. Your child will not be allowed to sign up to
another overseas trip for 2015. Full payment for the new activity allocated will be required. The balance of the
original activity may also be required should a replacement student be needed and not found.
4. The balance payment on the overseas trip may also be required subject to what the school can negotiate with
the service provider.
• The balance payment deadline is 31 August 2015.
• Given the often inflexible cancellation terms of our service providers, it is quite rare that we are able to amend
group numbers by cancelling individuals from activities once the deposit has been paid. The school remains
liable for the full cost of the trip, even if only the deposit has been paid. Therefore parents remain liable for the
full cost of their child’s original chosen activity, even if the child withdraws from that activity.
• Nevertheless, if a student applies to withdraw from an activity owing to exceptional circumstances, the school
will take every step possible to cancel the booking and recover whatever of the balance costs possible in order
to minimise the financial burden on parents. Parents should give the school as much notice as possible to do
this to increase the chances of recovering cost.
• It is highly recommended that parents take out personal travel insurance early on in the process in order to
recover any potential losses due to a medical issue that may arise in the period between sign up and the start of
Horizons Week.
Scenario A
3. Full payment for the new activity is required.
5. Parents of Student C could also potentially recover their shortfall via personal travel insurance taken out at the
time of sign up.
• In keeping with the EDB, the school does not insure against cancellation, therefore it is highly recommended
that parents should take out their own personal travel insurance
• In the event of a cancellation due to resitting exams parents remain liable for the costs of a student’s chosen
activity. As before parents should inform the school as soon as the need to cancel is known and the school will
take every step possible to recover whatever of the balance of costs possible.
• In the case of cancellation due to medical reasons the school should be notified in writing as soon as possible
and supported by the original doctor’s certificate. Every effort will be made to reallocate an activity to suit the
physical condition of the student however no guarantees are made. Similarly every effort will be made to
negotiate with the service provider to recover costs but no guarantees are given.
• When an activity is cancelled by the school due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. travel warning), the school
will make every possible arrangement to transfer the group to a new activity. The deposit payment will be
transferred automatically to the new activity. Parents will be consulted about the proposed new activity.
1. Student A puts in a request to withdraw from an overseas activity will not be reallocated to another overseas
trip.
• The school will hold parents responsible for costs incurred due to the withdrawal of their child from an activity.
2. The deposit paid for the overseas trip will be forfeited.
Revised March 2015
3. Full payment for the new activity is required.
Mrs J. Craig
4. The balance payment on the overseas trip may also be required subject to what the school can negotiate with
the service provider.
