The 2014 Show is bigger and better with quality exhibitors as usual and many new and innovative companies will be showcasing their products. There will be a non-stop programme to keep visitors busy and we encourage you to bring your recycled bag and shop till you drop and take a rest at our delectable Feast Area with delicious food to die for. When I enter a store, I am always struck with awe at the various products and packagings that are impossible to recycle - when is it all going to end? What is the solution? We have to get into the mind-set of the concept of designing with intent and this looks at recyclability and what materials go into the product-making and how easy it will be for the consumer to recycle it and sort it for their bins and for the recycled goods to be able to be introduced as a new end product. One point that we are emphasising at the show is the action to enact the principles of “reduce, recycle and reuse” and start being creative and thinking about what you could do with products that you no longer need and that could be made into recycled products. There will be companies at the expo that will show you their initiative. Women are Economic Drivers and are concerned with environmental issues. They are the critical family buyer, and seek opportunities, educational challenges, and save money for their children’s future and they are the fastest-growing group of creative green entrepreneurs in NZ and globally. Give it a thought! At the expo you will notice women empowerment exhibitors. The Green Living Show & NZ Organic Natural Expo encourages credible companies to leverage the sustainability principles, transparency, work place conditions, fairness, health and safety and environmental integrity. Look us up for special priced tickets and book our seminars and activities at the show, keep checking and like us on FACEBOOK to win prizes now and before the show. The Green Living Magazine may 2014 5 organic natural a conversation with Adrian Barkla of Remuera New World How long have you been selling organics at your store? Around 2½ to 3 years now. What are the goals for your supermarket? Well it would be pretty cool to be 100% organic but I think realistically this could not happen due to all the lines we must stock as being part of a wider group of stores. Therefore trying to push the fresh aspect as much as possible gets people off these processed foods, which are about as good for you as eating concrete. Why do you have an advantage for selling organics at your store? We just get into it, it is not the size of the dog in the fight it is the fight in the dog . By that, when you believe in something you will always have an advantage over others who basically couldn’t care less. I mean I am lucky I have a great produce guy - Abhi and he is really the MAN who is so positive and enthusiastic and Abhi tracks down growers, does all the deals with them which enables us to pay the growers more and keep the prices down as we are buying direct so everybody can afford organics. What changes have you made to keep this organic mind set going and what are the views of your customers? We do get some funny ones like “why are you forcing that organic stuff on us?” and “it is so expensive you are ripping us off.” I have found it hard to get the point across that organic is not always more expensive than the conventional varieties which can have more toxins in them. There is a perception that organic is more costly and this is not necessarily always the case especially at Remuera New World. We are continuously looking for more growers to increase our range. Is being in Remuera an advantage? Or is it because organics will be accepted anywhere in NZ if people wanted good health? I think the ‘remmers’ people are switched on to organics but there are people all through NZ wanting the organic product and don’t forget the substantial amount of overseas visitors as well. Also people have to get it in their heads that food is really important for health and a huge proportion of this should be fresh and organically grown. Basically bad food will make you sick and wonder of wonders, great food will make you well again - sadly most people are told they are just the unlucky ones to get sick and to carry on as before as diet has very little to do with the sickness. ' 6 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 organic natural What are you accountable for when it comes to selling organics to customers? If we call a product organic we need to see the certification from a Government approved organization before we sell the product. What is your latest thinking for organics in NZ and how can we get people to eat organics? When people get sick and tired of being sick and tired and when they stop rushing off to the doctors every time they get a little niggle and when we stop this ‘pill for every ill’ thinking and everybody pulls their heads out of the sand and thinks for themselves that all this stuff we are putting into our bodies just maybe isn’t that good for us. Then maybe we will get a bit of a shift. Look at Youtube’s Carl Lewis vegan diet, where he talks about athletes in the States who have a worse diet than actors (as actors have more idea generally) than athletes about the importance of diet and the implications on their health. You have to read with an open mind, to peel back the layers of lies and the so called studies to prove something is healthy and be honest with yourself as you will always find an article that will back your thinking so you can keep eating the food that made you sick in the first place. Is there brand competition for organic foods in NZ? Not so much - I think the main thing is do not buy organics if the ingredients come from countries with dubious standards and corrupt governments. And lastly remember… THE GREATEST WEALTH IS HEALTH. ■ Like even read Pottingers cats - this was a 10 year experiment done on cats and the only difference between the two groups was one group ate raw food and the other the same food, but cooked. This experiment was done in the 30’s; I don’t think there was a fourth generation of the ‘cooked food group’ of cats as they were all sterile. Maybe books like this will open people’s minds out there, as it is all just common sense at the end of the day. Why go organic? Because I can and because I have an enquiring mind that doesn’t believe all these pathetic statements made by research groups who have been employed by manufacturers to say that their products are safe. How can we help to keep organic prices the same as conventional prices or at least nearly the same? I think like everything once you get scale and sell more, the prices will come down. The Green Living Magazine may 2014 11 organic NATURAL how clean and green is your food? and agencies for inspecting, advising and certifying organic producers and their products have been developed. Certifying agencies (such as New Zealand's BioGro) set high standards for organic producers. Delicious – but dangerous? A glass of wine. Crisp sticks of celery stuffed with cream cheese. Salad sandwiches. Stir fries. Fruit salad and cream. Classic Kiwi menu items that millions of us enjoy every month, feeling lucky that we live in a clean, green country with an abundance of safe, healthy food. Right? If only. Successive pesticide residue surveys by the NZ Food Safety Authority show that while celery may be green, it sure isn't clean. It often tops the list for pesticide residues. Also featuring regularly in the 'dirty dozen' of most contaminated foods are grapes and other fruits, salad vegetables such as cucumber, tomatoes and lettuce, products made from wheat flour, and dairy products.* These cover animal health and welfare, soil health and conservation, sustainable fertilisers, biodiversity protection, safe ways of preventing or treating pests and diseases and all other aspects of raising healthy food in a clean environment. Why organic? Scientists have known since the 1960s about the short and long term toxic effects of exposure to the agricultural chemicals that came into common use after World War Two. Some farmers decided not to use them, for the sake of the farm, family's health, the health of the natural environment, and the health of those buying their products. The term 'organic' was applied to this way of farming, which uses biological not chemical methods of fertilising plants, feeding animals, and protecting them both from pests and diseases. As the public learns more about the dangers of synthetic chemicals (and becomes more concerned about the damage done to wildlife and waterways by chemical contamination) the demand for organic products continues to grow steadily. Eating an organic diet really does make a difference, reducing agricultural chemicals in the bloodstream significantly.* Organics is more than food. It's important to choose organic personal care products and health supplements to avoid harmful synthetic chemicals. Organic hemp farmers Dave and Ann Jordan make a range of such products from hemp seed oil. How do I know it's really organic? With the growing popularity of organics, consumers need to know what organics really is, and be protected from cheats who want to be paid an organic premium without doing the work required to make real organic products. Systems When buying something that claims to be organic, always look on the label for the logo of the certifying agency. If there isn't one, and you are not sure whether the claim to be organic is true or not, contact the producer or processor and ask them to verify their claim by telling you who certified the product. Sometimes you'll find a product (such as a bottled sauce or a shampoo) that claims to be made from '80% organic ingredients', or similar. Once again you should look for the certifying logo, and ask questions if there isn't one. When buying fresh produce, which is often unlabelled, ask the retailer for verification. Genuine organic producers selling at markets or road side stalls should display (or be able to produce) their certification documents. Support the producers who have earned your trust by becoming certified, and you will be supporting not only better food for you and your family, but also the move towards making more of the New Zealand countryside genuinely clean and green. ■ Christine Dann, Communications Manager, Organics Aotearoa New Zealand Sources: Alison White, 'The 'dirty dozen' - latest update', Organic NZ Magazine, January/February 2014, http://www.organicnz.org.nz/node/804 and Alison White, 'The Dirty Dozen - 12 foods with the most pesticide residues', Organic NZ Magazine, May/June 2010, http://www.organicnz.org.nz/ node/120 Bruce Lourie and Rick Smith (2013) Toxin Toxout: Getting harmful chemicals out of our bodies and our world, http://toxintoxout.ca/ books/toxin-toxout/ 12 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 WHAT’S THE POBLEM? Do you have organic certification? Back in 1998 we began growing herbs on our 15 hectare property just outside Waiuku. Though we were supplying the conventional market we recognised the value of producing our product organically. We placed our farm under conversion to organic certification, becoming fully certified in 2001. Organically certified businesses that are audited annually, by an independent certifying agency, provide an assurance that their products are produced under strict organic guidelines. Sunset Coast Organics are certified with AsureQuality and have internationally recognized IFOAM accreditation for their products. How do you manage soil fertility? We began by re-fencing our property and establishing native plantings. This helped combat the strong westerly winds and created micro climates for our crops. Our aim was to produce high quality food in a sustainable manner by supporting natural ecosystems and increasing the fertility of the land. Conventional growing can lead to a decline in soil quality, whereas an organic 14 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 management system aims to build soil biology. We want the land to look good and feel good. This also leads to healthy plants with a high Brix (soluble solids) content which are nutritious and stand up well to handling. We have adopted a biological growing system. Our soil fertility is monitored with seasonal testing and we work closely with a range of suppliers to maintain the right balance of minerals and biology in our soil. Green crops are an important part of our growing practice. They build carbon, assist with crop rotation practices and protect our soils from erosion. We also grow herbs and flowers alongside the vegetables, which encourages a good population of beneficial insects in our gardens. How do you market your products? We produce a specialist range of vegetables which have been developed by responding to our customers needs and trialing what grows well in our conditions. Our main demand is for our kale, cavolo nero, rocket, mesclun, baby spinach and salad mix. However, we also grow a wide range of herbs and other gourmet vegetables. This provides a good balance to our gardens and seasonal variety for our customers. Our business has grown steadily over the years, along with an increased demand for sustainably grown, pesticide free produce. Most of our produce is sold directly into organic specialty stores and cafes. By selling direct our produce can be delivered to our clients the morning after harvest. The reduction in handling, transportation and storage time results in fresher produce for our consumers. In most cases we sell our produce in bulk which allows each shop to process our products into the packaging that best suits their client’s needs. Our marketing is more about focusing on providing the best produce and service we can rather than focusing on sales. By doing this we have found that our reputation for supplying quality food has done much of our marketing for us. Growing organically has enabled Jason and Anisa to support their family and provide both full-time and seasonal employment for their team. “We love being a part of an industry that holds so much potential for the future”. ■ Juelle Hunt is a freelance writer for The Green Living Magazine. It is well known that the skin absorbs ingredients from skin care preparations. The positive is our skin can be nourished from the outside with organic ingredients in harmony with nature. Many ingredients which should never be taken orally are in skincare preparations, and absorbed into our system. Customers are led to believe ‘derived from’ is natural. As coconut oil has gained popularity in skin care, awareness that chemicals such as the foaming agent Cocoamide DEA or Sodium Hydroxysultaine are associated with ‘derived from coconut oil’. To produce this foaming agent, a synthetic chemical, known carcinogen Diethanolamin-DEA, is added to the coconut oil, which now makes it hardly natural. It is practised globally and experience has shown it to be very effective for waste management. In New Zealand we have concentrated on food waste management and are now viewed as world leaders by a number of overseas peers. Bokashi is a unique way of composting kitchen food waste through the addition of the microbial inoculant ‘CompostZing‘ to food waste in a bucket system, which is airtight. The inoculant when added to organic matter such as food waste then starts a process called fermentation. Biologically speaking, there are 2 pathways in the decomposition of organic matter, putrefaction and fermentation. The true source of any odour problem is rotting organic matter that has putrefied. Implementing a system using fermentation therefore has a number of benefits over regular composting. • Halves composting time • Easy to use • Reduces odours • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions • Provides high quality compost resulting in healthy plants. Research has shown that people... 1. Believe that they don’t have the space to compost 2. Don’t have a garden area to compost 3. Don’t have the time to compost Bokashi composting goes a long way towards reducing these barriers and can provide a significant reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill. The system is simple and can be utilised by both householders and businesses due to: • Quick Results - rich organic compost can be produced within four to six weeks rather than the three to six months or longer of turning a compost pile • NO space required - because the process takes place in a 15 litre bucket, it is ideal for houses, offices and schools. Further research carried out by Dr Sean Barnes in Queenstown in 2009, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ZingBokashi composting system as a suitable low tech method for processing organic food waste at source indicated: • Common pathogens were absent in juice samples after fermentation • No discernable odour • High N, P & K contained in juice • Solid material breaks down rapidly in soil or compost heaps Plus, when the fermented food waste was buried after 8 weeks it was found that the carbon content and soil organic matter had increased around 25% and the nutrients N,P & K had increased by between 25% and 60% . In conclusion it was found that the addition of fermented food waste has many benefits to the soil, especially in the short term. Long- term benefits have yet to researched. ■ Neville Burt ZingBokashi The Green Living Magazine may 2014 17 organic NATURAL Introducing ‘Back to Basic’ Traditional Stoneware Pots Each hand-turned pot is unique, made using traditional methods which span back to ancient Persian times. Stonemasons use hand tools to carve a stone called cerbintain, sourced and made in a small village near Mashhad in North East Iran. These pots have been made in this region since 1000 BC and in recent years there has been a resurgence in their popularity as people become increasingly aware of choosing health conscious options. Unlike modern aluminium or Teflon pots, stone pots do not leach chemicals or artificial materials into your food. In their un-cured form they are a dusky grey, but once cured with oil and in regular use the pots change to an elegant dark grey or black. ‘Back to Basic’ hand-made stone pots are now available at Wise Cicada and selected retailers nationwide. Utilising a low heat on a gas or electric hob or a low setting in an oven, the pots heat up, to slowly and evenly cook your food, retaining nutrients and distilling flavour. These pots are also eco-friendly as less energy is used to cook your food and keep it warm for a longer period of time. "The use of vegetable oils for engine fuels may seem insignificant today but such oils may become, in the course of time, as important as petroleum and the coal-tar products of the present time.” Rudolph Diesel, 1912 The major advantages of the diesel engine over the petrol engine are: • Burns less fuel. • Can convert 45% of fuel into mechanical energy as opposed to 30% for the petrol engine. • No high voltage ignition system so more reliable. • Generally the life span is two times that of a petrol engine. Due to the low cost and abundance of diesel fuel vegetable oil based fuels were sidelined. Some attention was given to them after World War II and in the 1970s oil crisis but this was short lived. After 9-11, petroleum oil prices rose dramatically and the need to be in control of fuel production intensified in the west. Fortunately for us, the limited resources of petroleum and the growing ‘alternative fuels’ market, the diesel engine is finally being utilised for its original purpose. Biodiesel is becoming one of the fastest growing alternative fuels in the world. Biodiesel is clean, renewable, cost effective and has the ability to help us through the shortages and inevitable demise of petroleum. It can be used in our modern day diesel engines without modifications. With modifications straight vegetable oil can be used as a fuel source for the diesel engine. Rudolph Diesel was born in 1858. He died just over 100 years ago - 29 September, 1913, at the age of 55. In the 1890s Rudolph Diesel received a number of patents for his invention of the internal combustion engine. These were the initial designs for what we know today as the diesel engine. Dr Diesel designed his engine to use vegetable oils. He worked extensively on vegetable oil fuels so that farmers, who lived in remote areas and where petroleum was not available, would be able to provide their own fuel. Unfortunately just after his death petroleum became widely available and ‘diesel fuel’ was created. The diesel engine design was modified to accommodate the new fuel and for 80 years not much changed. The diesel engine is now the engine of choice for efficiency, reliability and power. 26 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 As long as we have the ability to produce enough sustainable vegetable oil fuels to keep the cost of biodiesel competitive, without destroying ecosystems or using valuable land for food production, then perhaps the diesel engine and Dr Rudolph Diesel’s vision is a greater blessing today than was appreciated over 100 years ago. ■ written by ecowoman sustainability & management Stationery made from your own waste paper Tina Raines talks to Amanda Judd, founder of Lovenotes Like all good things that come to life, Lovenotes began with a simple idea – reusing paper. Amanda Judd, founder of Lovenotes began this initiative by encouraging the re-use of one-sided paper in her old office space. Beginning with a couple of trays placed on desks; Amanda encouraged fellow colleagues to collect the spare one-sided paper. With the idea rapidly catching on amongst the team it was no surprise that she soon had a cupboard full of boxes calling to be used. Amanda took these boxes home, turned it into some stationery at her Dad’s print factory and just like that, Lovenotes was born! Today Lovenotes has grown into an independent social enterprise that brings with it a new and dynamic way of refreshing, reusing and recycling. What is your Philosophy? Through a fusion of old and new, Lovenotes brings a fresh perspective in its service, product and philosophy. The service & product concept is simple: one-sided paper that we often neglect to re-use is given new life in the form of being refreshed into stationery. In its philosophy, Lovenotes is all about inviting people to step aboard a new way of working; soak up their surroundings and enjoy the work that they do. Thriving workplaces are our passion! The focus is on the collective impact; not just individual return. With the traditional concept of recycling becoming increasingly automated, people have become detached from the process. One can no longer feel accountable for his or her actions, or see the difference they are making. Lovenotes changes this. It takes things back to basics and ensures that everyone not only plays their part for the environment, but also has the opportunity to feel involved through using their Refreshed Lovenotes products. It is quick, easy and convenient and helps you save significant amounts on those office stationery bills. Lovenotes really is a great way to be environmentally savvy whilst getting value for your money. Lovenotes is doing its bit for environmental harmony, social justice, and people’s happiness and well-being. So jump on board, find out more and become part of the Lovenotes experience. Check out this great film that shares more of the spirit of Lovenotes! - www.vimeo. com/50959158 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 27 How many are there in your team? There are six of us. You can read more about the core team over here - www. lovenotes.co.nz/about/the-crew What are the key attributes of Lovenotes? Innovative, Thriving, People focused, Serving, Daring, Remarkable, Playful. How has the company changed since it first started/ What are you focusing on? We spent the first three or so years exploring and experimenting at all layers of the organisation. The most significant change was in the business model - we originally had companies donate their waste paper, which we manufactured into stationery and sold. However this didn't work for a lot of reasons; most significantly it meant we were "selling stuff" as our core business, which wasn't manifesting our kaupapa. So we flipped it to selling a paper refreshing service, and giving away free products. In essence what we've ended up with is a service based model where the paper collectors receive their products back, paying a fixed service fee, and they can mix and match whichever products they like. We have also changed our philosophy with regards to branding quite significantly. This reflects both the attitude and resonance of our team and where we are at in our journey as innovators and changemakers, and also where society is at. We now communicate what the service is, how it works, and the product you receive back. We've also emphasised the product because if people love it, the only way they can get it is to collect their waste paper - and this is the magic, regenerating their relationship with waste. This is quite a shift (and also a debatable strategy) to our original communications approach which was preachy; telling you "what you will create when using the service, all the impacts you will generate, why you need to do it and help save the world, and that it's so important to be part of the movement as we need to save the world!" We are very happy with having let this approach go, and flourished into a positive, strengths based paradigm. What happens with used paper once it hits the recycle bin? When it hits the Lovenotes bin, our friendly team pick it up from your workplace with your confirmed order. It's then sorted at our weekly Paper Jam (adding a whole lotta love into your Lovenotes for sure!), trimmed, covered, padded, bound, packaged, and delivered back the 28 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 following week. When you've used your notebooks up, we recommend adding the pages to your conventional paper recycling service, and sending the plastic coils back to Lovenotes for reuse. Lovenotes seems to have cultivated a brand that communicates concern for, and responsible stewardship of the environment. How critical has that positioning been to Lovenotes success? It certainly played an important role to position ourselves this way expressively when we first started - because that's what the people wanted from us. Now, as mentioned earlier, we let the product and service do the talking for itself. And this is serving us extremely well. How does Lovenotes help business? How does it all work out? Lovenotes provides workplaces with our signature Lovenotes service - remarkable stationery made from your own waste paper. The service generates many layers of added goodness; some clients have experienced excited and engaged staff, developing thriving workplace culture and purpose, saving money, and much more. You should give it a try & discover the value in your own workplace! Do businesses actually save money doing it the Lovenotes way? Yes. We discovered that; if you refresh 8 boxes of waste paper into a range of all the products; and then if you compared the price to purchasing brand new stationery; you'd save almost 50% on cost. There can also be another layer of cost saving if your workplace is offsetting carbon, if you can leverage the behaviour change & get staff diverting even more waste from landfill, savings on recycling fees - every workplace can explore the depths of cost saving. What is your vision for the company? 100 cities with thriving workplaces refreshing their waste paper into Remarkable Stationery, within our lifetime. What is one thing that you would like to do for your company that you have not done? Have a wonderful party full of fabulosity, celebrating all the amazing people who have and are contributing! From our partners (clients), helpers, paper Jammers, supporters, the champions who wave the Lovenotes flag everywhere and help share the stories, the people who helped me when it all started, there are so many people to have a great time with! And also, to get city number two up and running. ■ The Green Living Magazine may 2014 29 sustainability & management 10 Steps for actualising a deeply-inspired goal On your journey to achieve optimum health, wealth, love and happiness it is crucial to have goals that are Soul-filled so that you are inspired to achieve them. In order to achieve them there are a series of steps I’ve found to be beneficial when striving to actualise and manifest what you really want. 1 Be super clear about what you want and know what’s stopping you or standing in the way of your purpose-full life. This first step is essential. You must gain clarity on what you really want and clearly determine the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual roadblocks that are preventing you from having what you want! 2 Make a decision and choose to be committed to taking the action necessary to create change and achieve your goals. I cannot stress the importance of commitment enough. Commitment and persistence are the real determining factors between success and failure. 3 Recognise and consciously choose to eliminate old, limiting patterns. Recognizing any limiting mind sets, beliefs, patterns of behaviour or ways of “being” will bring you one step forward in experiencing true personal empowerment and liberation. 4 Develop new empowering habits and patterns to replace the old ones. Put into place new thoughts, words, empowering decisions and ways of “being” that will ALLOW for new experiences, people and opportunities to be seen and known. 5 Be enthusiastic and have a positive expectation towards integrating these new habits/patterns into your life. When you consciously choose to integrate these new patterns of behaving, responding (instead of reacting,) and “being” you will notice people, situations and opportunities appearing in your life as if by magic! 6 Visualise your ideal future (and goals) consistently as though this is already your current reality. Visualisation provides the accelerator power that brings things to life. It will help you serve as a giant magnet for the information, inspiration, people and opportunities that will propel you forward and allow the experiences you desire to be realised, seen and known. 7 Make conscious decisions that support you and your goals. When you make conscious choices, set clear and positive expectations and then allow for successfull, nurturing relationships and joyful experiences to permeate your day to day life, you consciously create an environment where you can THRIVE. 8 Be aware of and act on new opportunities for success. Pay attention to the new situations, circumstances and individuals that enter your path. Know that they have been delivered to you as part of your divinely designed plan to allow for the manifestation of your soul’s desires and dreams. 9 Have faith that you are worthy of receiving the abundance, radiant health and success that is your birthright. Affirm and know that you are a beautiful, radiant soul worthy of phenomenal success and prosperity on every level. 10 Show gratitude and give thanks often. As you see your goals manifest before your eyes, give sincere thanks for them and know that you are worthy of these gifts, capable of receiving even greater success, and divinely designed for limitless abundance in all forms! ■ If you want to know more about manifesting the life and business you deserve visit www. catherinenewton.com where Catherine Newton can help you transform your life, find your passion, live your genius and grow your wealth. 30 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 sustainability & management The Green Living Magazine may 2014 31 sustainability & management “Less is more” a new food production paradigm We all need to eat. Some of us have too much food and far too many of us, particularly in places like Africa, have too little. What is becoming more and more obvious though is that the what we eat and the way we produce it is a major contributor to global warming and the threat it ultimately presents to human existence on the planet. We may literally be eating ourselves to extinction! “Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased.” The latest report from the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has a sobering message about the inevitable consequences of our current lifestyle choices. The accumulation of the greenhouse gasses, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane in the atmosphere, is the driver for climate change and the IPCC is in no doubt that humans are responsible for the crisis we face. Of course the global food system is not solely responsible for climate change but deforestation for agriculture and the food production and distribution chain is responsible for about one third of the total greenhouse gasses released to the atmosphere. New Zealand’s economic reliance on primary production means that agriculture is responsible for 48% of our greenhouse gas emissions. The IPCC report coincides with recent warnings from The United Nations, the World Bank, the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the European Commission that we cannot achieve global food security while our western diets are unsustainable and we waste approximately 40% of the food we produce. All four organisations highlight 32 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 that our current focus on increased food production has to change and we need to focus on what we grow, how we grow it and how we distribute it. The catch cry is “less is more”! So, less of what? Well, meat and dairy for a start. One third of the world’s cereal harvest and 90% of soy is used for animal feed. In the US and Canada half of all synthetic fertilisers are used for feed crops, in the UK the figure is 70%. Synthetic fertilisers are one of the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. Deforestation agriculture including palm oil production and it’s by product, palm kernel (rapidly becoming indispensable to the NZ dairy industry), is another big contributor. Meat and dairy are a useful example for New Zealanders to focus on. Cattle are poor converters of grain to meat or milk. They are ruminants by nature and very efficient at converting grasses into high protein food. Traditionally we farmed our cattle almost exclusively on pasture. More recently, in our quest for ever increasing production, grains and palm kernel are being relied on. In the new agricultural paradigm “less is more”, New Zealand’s traditional pasture based agriculture would give us a major advantage. We could produce meat and milk in a more environmentally sustainable way without cereal and palm kernel inputs. We may produce less but it will be worth more. If we also start to reduce our dependence on chemical fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides through the use of agri-ecological farming methods including organic, biological and biodynamic, then we will really be on a path to economic and environmental sustainability and a reduction in our carbon footprint. ■ Derek Broadmore Organic Farmer Chair BioGro Society sustainability & management DASHBOARD IMAGE: TOYOTA NZ Global Vision with Extra Kiwi Drive Toyota NZ (TNZ) is a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, a multinational with a reputation for environmental leadership, a commitment to ‘sustainable mobility’ and ultimately to zero emissions from production, use and disposal of vehicles. TNZ strongly supports its parent company’s commitment. of $200,000 were made at the two main sites. New Zealand car buyers, surveyed by the Motor Industry Association since 2005 have consistently ranked Toyota as “number one” in the section which asks: “Which manufacturers brand cares most for the environment and cares most for the community?” Tristan Lavender, TNZ’s environmental officer, says such large savings contradict the conventional view that carbon management lacks real benefits, or is expensive to implement, as these savings easily absorb the cost of improvements. TNZ’s chief executive, Alistair Davis says the management team has long been passionate about the environment: “Science and common-sense dictate that climate change is a serious issue and that cars are part of the problem. We had to decide what to do about it. Business can’t succeed in a society that fails.” TNZ’s investment also recouped by revising many operational systems, such as air conditioning and security lighting with seasonal cycles, changing office and warehouse lighting, lagging hot water pipes and introducing more efficient paint ovens at the Thames plant. TNZ has acquired extra tools that allow it to confidently “walk the talk” with local consumers. The company started its carbon management journey in 2006. The company is CEMARS® (Certified Emissions Measurement And Reduction Scheme) certified. In short, that means it has been measuring its carbon footprint, finding ways to manage and reduce it and having the process independently verified for seven years. The entire Toyota dealer Travel was cut through the use of on-line used vehicle auctions and teleconferences. The travel savings cannot be solely credited to certification, but this provided the initial motivation and momentum. network in New Zealand is Enviro-Mark Gold certified or higher. For TNZ, the certification not only endorsed its environment credentials, but the process also prompted reviews that paid big dividends. Energy audits found opportunities for savings in lighting, heating, cooling and operation of paint ovens. From 2006 to 2010, sales were up, but gas and power consumption was cut by 35% and savings Company staff members are benefiting. Tristan says a staff carbon performance bonus scheme runs alongside the sales performance targets. It covers reducing air travel, power used in buildings and more efficient fuel use in cars. If year-end targets are met staffs are rewarded with a bonus. Tristan says the CEMARS programme’s rigorous scientific integrity makes it the logical choice to continue to manage and help reduce TNZ’s emissions. CEMARS certification is based on a scientific footprint measurement, aligned with international best practice (ISO 14064-1) and developed by Enviro-Mark Solutions Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Landcare Research, and the first GHG certification programme to be internationally accredited to IS0 14065, which means the brand is recognised in 50 economies. ■ The Green Living Magazine may 2014 33 ecobuild how important are beautiful man-made spaces? As an Interior Designer my intention is to leave a space more beautiful than when I first entered it! But how does one define and create beauty in a building? As an aspect of the psychology of a building, it is widely accepted to refer to the interaction of an environment and its inhabitants. Beauty is defined as: ”the quality or combination of qualities in an entity which evokes in the perceiver a combination of a sense of 'strong attraction' and a sense of 'strong positive emotion' " (www.beautyanalysis.com). F.L. Wright, the founder of Organic Architecture, speaks about the interactive processes of environmental influence and feedback: "Whether people are fully conscious of this or not, they actually derive countenance and sustenance from the atmosphere of the things they live in or with. They are rooted in them just as a plant is in the soil in which it is planted". Fashion and trends are constantly changing - the idea about Beauty however seems timeless. For centuries Beauty in general has been associated with radiance, attraction and the wellbeing it evokes in people. Contemporary research in Beauty has rediscovered the GOLDEN MEAN as a yardstick, or geometric ratio, to define physical beauty in human beings. Research has also shown the validity of this antique ratio (1:1.618) in explaining the phenomenon of perceived beauty in human and animal faces, to help understand the mystery of attraction and "irresistible beauty”. Historically the GOLDEN MEAN has been utilised as an architectural tool to create harmony and balance in buildings. But to create wellbeing in a person, non-physical factors have to be part of the equation. In Organic Architecture and Design we consider the soul and psychology of a building. What distinguishes one space from another, if not the way one unconsciously responds to a particular space? Similarities between a human home/ shelter/habitat and the human body as a home for the soul need to be recognised in order to solve this puzzle. Beautiful spaces fulfil the need to recharge one's natural energy levels in an otherwise unnatural environment. 34 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 So how can we apply the above observations to the conscious planning of a beautiful space as an alternative to the contemporary disease of the square box syndrome? How do we make safe choices in the design of a beneficial ambient world? Naturally occurring laws and patterns, such as the Golden Mean, non-linear organic structures, spirals and other curves, have proven to be a constant and unbiased standard in the creation of attractive, beautiful and functional spaces as they occur in nature, of which we are still an integral part. Design as a creative process needs to freely apply flowing forms and shapes, independent colour schemes, as well as natural laws and patterns (e.g. using triplets structures) to qualify as a contemporary serious rediscovered form of art. ■ Susanne Brutscher Interior Design Studio Mapua www.callfordesign.co.nz Tasman Building Biology www.building4life.co.nz HEALTY LIFESTYLE - mind body wellness Enjoy healthier, functional and attractive home / work spaces with a personal feel. In fact, it’s been around since the dawn of civilisation. But with the rise of technology, humankind has sometimes forgotten nature’s basics. Now, more and more people around the globe are rediscovering the benefits of solar cooking. The reasons are numerous. First, let’s look at the health benefits. When food is boiled, the nutrients leach out into the water and are lost. The solar cooking process however, allows the food to retain more moisture, most cooking requires no extra water, thus preserving vital vitamins and minerals. Solar cooking isn’t just healthier for the individual; it’s also healthier for the environment. The only “fuel” used in solar cooking is the sun. No charcoal, propane, gas or electricity. No firewood contributing to deforestation. It’s hard to find a smaller carbon footprint than that. And the process is pretty straight forward. For cooking, simply throw ingredients into a black enclosed pot and place the pot in the oven. For dehydrating, simply lay sliced fruit evenly over a cooking rack and place the rack in the oven, vented. Then walk away and leave it. Since there’s no flame involved, food can cook and sun dry unattended without the risk of burning or firerelated accidents. Whether you’re searching for ways to be “green” or simply want a way to cook in the event of an emergency, it’s time to get back to basics and rediscover the benefits of cooking with the sun. ■ Kate Rowland Director www.ebrightenergy.co.nz Sunflair Solar Oven Recipe: Poached Pears Ingredients 4 ripe pears 1 lemon, quartered 1 cup (235 ml) apple cider 3-4 tbsp (42-57 grams) honey Directions 1. Wash and peel pears and rub each one with a lemon quarter to prevent them from turning brown. 2. Use the tip of your peeler to remove the core from the bottom and if a pear doesn’t stand up well, level the bottom. 3. In the pot, stir the apple cider and honey. 4. Place pears into the pot and cover. Cook until pears are soft and tender, 20 to 30 minutes; remove pears and set aside. 5. To reduce the liquid, put the pot back in the oven without the lid. Vent/unzip the Sunflair oven to release steam. Reduce to about 1/2 cup (118 ml). 6. Spoon the cider and honey reduction over the pears. I am biased towards passive solar and environmental design; it kind of makes a lot of sense to me. The deeper I immerse myself into house designs like this, the more I see, the more I learn, and the better the design outcome for all. Whether I’m becoming extremely passionate or singular minded, I’m not sure. Probably both. I just wish more of us would subscribe to environmental principles and build more houses based on these sound design ideas. If we did, then the need for more power generation and high winter power bills would be hugely reduced, which is good for the environment and our pocket. Our health and comfort levels would significantly increase, due to warmer houses and better air flow, and guess what, we might even be a bit happier, I think. Everyone needs more sunlight during winter with a few less bills to pay. The idea of a house heated by the sun, ventilated by natural air flow and nicely tied together through good design is the ultimate goal for any passive solar, environmental home. And, I firmly believe it can be done on a realistic budget using off the shelf materials and technologies. Passive solar and environmental house design intuitively allows a house to respond to its local setting and site, through a carefully considered climate design strategy which embraces the local environment, rather than resisting it. The key is to maximise and unlock the abundant natural resources provided by our planet and get the house working with these. In some ways it’s a bit like finding the positive ‘Qi’(ch'i) found in Chinese ‘Feng Shui’, or the ancient Roman ‘Genius Loci’, finding the protective spirit of a place. The way we approach this in the contemporary world is partly intuitive design and partly scientific endeavour, I believe. The New Zealand temperate climate and geographical location on the globe ( latitude and longitude) relative to the sun gives it perfect circumstances to optimise low angled winter sun, which if designed for correctly can slide deep into a house providing most of the required heating. During summer the sun angle is high and intense, this can be controlled through correct eaves design and orientation, which eliminates overheating. Ingredients like correct site analysis, maximised northern aspect, window sizing, window locations, thermal mass, insulated glass, above code insulation and eaves design drive the technical design response. Understanding how houses respond to seasonal sun paths, wind flow, and spirit of place informs an intuitive reaction in the design. This reaction is always going to be different for each person and site. I really believe everything we need exists to create smart, intuitively responsive environmental designs which engage the local site, freely harnessing sun, air and wind, while all the more making people happier through good design. The only thing hard to find is the catalyst or attitude which drives this accordingly. Much like everything. ■ Written by Duncan Firth www.solarei.com 38 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 HEALTY LIFESTYLE - mind body wellness 39 The Green Living Magazine february 2014 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 39 www.pacificgreen.net SEE US at the show! So, how can you stay on top of the game this year? Along with regular exercise, adequate sleep, sunshine (and vitamin D) when possible, and reducing stress, add these immune-boosting foods to your weekly diet. Lean Red Meat Coconut It is well known that red meat is a great source of the mineral, iron. Adequate iron intakes are essential for a healthy body, including a healthy immune system. Red meat also contains high levels of zinc, another mineral involved in the development of white blood cells, as well as vitamins A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, and beta-carotene. Not only do coconuts support thyroid functioning and a healthy metabolism, they also contain immune-boosting fatty acids, mainly the medium-chain amino acid Lauric that makes up around about 50% of coconut oil. Lauric acid is converted in your body to monolaurin, a product found in breast milk that provides protection to the newborn through its antibiotic, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Mushrooms Mushrooms really are an immune-boosting super food. They contain the antioxidants vitamin C and selenium, vitamin D, copper and the powerful beta-glucans. Beta-glucans (found mostly in Reishi, Shiitake, and Maitake) are notable for their ability to activate and regulate the immune system by increasing the production and activity of white blood cells, making them more aggressive against fighting off any bad guys! Free Range Eggs Not only are eggs a great source of protein and iron, they also contain a number of immune-boosting nutrients including anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids, important in reducing inflammation associated with colds and respiratory infections. Eggs also contain antioxidants such as beta-carotene, mostly found within the yolk. Beta-carotene, the precursor for vitamin A, has been shown to enhance immune cell functioning. Vitamin A ensures white blood cells are working at their best and supports overall immune health. Try these immune-boosting meal ideas: - Thai beef and mushroom curry made with coconut milk or cream - Mushroom, spinach, salmon frittata - Seafood laksa with Shiitake mushrooms - Surf and turf with mushrooms fried in coconut oil Just because the weather outside is getting ugly, it doesn’t mean your diet has to as well. Our Endocrine System The endocrine system is a collection of glands that regulate important bodily functions such as growth, metabolism & sexual development. The glands produce chemicals called hormones which are released directly into the bloodstream, where they travel to the target organs upon which they act. Each hormone shape is specific to the target cell it affects (a lock and key system) binding to the hormone receptors on the cells. Endocrine Disruptors What are endocrine disruptors? Every day we are being exposed to chemicals that are commonly found in our everyday household products, these chemicals are called endocrine disruptors, they have a similar structure to our body’s hormones and they can interfere with the body signalling pathways. They mimic our bodies own hormones. (Brownstein, 2012). Health Concerns Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer, worldwide increase in thyroid dysfunction, fertility issues and neurodevelopmental disorders in children and wildlife. Secrete hormones that influence metabolism, blood chemicals, and body characteristics, influence the nervous system’s response to and defence against stress. Pancreas Hypothalamus. Activates involuntary body functions such as sleep and appetite. Testicles Ovaries and testicles. Influence female and male characteristics, respectively. Pancreas. Secretes insulin, which controls the body’s blood sugar levels. Thymus gland. Plays a role in the body’s immune system. Thyroid gland. Produces hormones that stimulate body heat production, bone growth and metabolism. Source: AMA’s Current Procedural Terminology. Revised 1998 Edition. Girls are developing secondary sexual characteristics at earlier and earlier ages. Furthermore, young girls are starting to menstruate at a much earlier age compared to 20 years ago. Both early breast development and early onset of menses increases a girl’s lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. (Brownstein, 2011). A recent report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that many common chemicals are disrupting the human hormone system and could have significant health implications. The report is titled, “State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals”. You can download this report by clicking on the following link: http:// www.who.int/ceh/publications/endocrine/ en/ EDCs have the capacity to interfere with tissue and organ development and function, and therefore they may alter susceptibility to different types of diseases throughout life. This is a global threat that needs to be resolved. (WHO/ UNEP, 2013). In New Zealand metabolic disorders are of particular concern - the report highlighted that obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome are due to disruption of the energy storage–energy balance endocrine system and thus are potentially sensitive to EDCs. EDC’s disrupt the hormonal system. They can cause cancer, birth defects, lower the IQ in infants as well as cause developmental disorders in children. You can see the effect of EDC’s on our youth. The Green Living Magazine may 2014 Pituitary gland. Produces hormones that have influence over other endocrine glands. Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., one of the foremost American practitioners of conventional as well as holistic medicine says, “I have no doubt that one of the underlying reasons we are seeing such an epidemic of thyroid problems is due to the toxic load of chemicals including endocrine disruptors”. (Brownstein, 2011). The study calls for more research on endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC’s). They are found in many common household and industrial products. In fact, there are over 800 known endocrine disrupting chemicals present in our environment and have been detected in human urine on nearly all people tested. There are some strong data sets (e.g. for PCBs, lead and methylmercury) showing that environmentally relevant developmental exposures to these EDCs and potential EDCs have caused cognitive and behavioural deficits in humans. (WHO/ UNEP, 2013). 42 Pineal body. Controls daily biological cycles. The most common ways we are exposed to EDC’s is through packaging • BPA • Triclosan • Phthalates • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polychlorinated biphenyls (PBDEs) and PCBs) Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used to produce polycarbonate plastics (this type of plastic is used as it is strong, light and see through). Epoxy resins are also used as an adhesive and can be found in a variety of consumer products such as: • Baby bottles • Compact discs (CD’s) • Dental sealants • Food containers • Water bottles HEALTY LIFESTYLE - mind body wellness BPA’s are found in many other products such as floor coverings, enamels, vanish, nail polish and cash register receipts. What can we do about this problem? As highlighted there are over 800 known EDC’s in our environment but we can help protect our families by reducing exposure to these chemical s helping to lower the health risks. If you look closely at most plastic products — including containers — you will find a triangle with a number in the middle. These numbers indicate what the plastic is made of, and whether or not the product is “safe” to recycle. But they will also tell you if the plastics contain endocrine disruptors , such as bisphenol A (BPA), triclosan, and phthalates. Recycling codes 3 and 7 are more likely to contain phthalates and/or bisphenoyl A. Plastics coded 1, 2 or 5 may be safer. However, there may be other components that are endocrine disrupters. It is my opinion that it is best to avoid food in a plastic container, if possible. Glass or ceramic containers are much safer. It is also important that you never heat food in a container labelled with a 3 or 7, because it will cause more phthalates to be released. In fact, you should never heat any food in a plastic container. The Green Living Magazine may 2014 43 5 Keys to “Being” in Harmony “Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.” Mahatma Gandhi What is harmonic living? It is living in a manner that does not harm you, others or the environment. What does it take to be a harmonic being and enjoy peace and harmony in all aspects of life, regardless of our circumstances? How do we shift from a state of knowing to a state of being? It begins with having confidence in your awareness of what it takes to create harmony. Have confidence in your decisions about what you choose to buy and use. Have confidence in your choice to purchase what is safe and healthful, not what is convenient or “popular”. Have confidence in your decision about how you speak to others and interact with them at home and at work. Have confidence in how you choose to spend your time and money rather than live in the automatic pilot of consumerism and busyness. Allow harmony to be the first goal in everything you do. Often when I am sitting in a café, I hear small groups of people talking about this and that with an incessant need to have the last word or make the most sensational comment, as if they are in a competition, not a conversation. Why not sit in peace and attend to what your friend is saying - with interest, with compassion? If someone has done something a little differently from you, why choose to compare and criticize their actions? Why not appreciate that they attempted to do something and completed it? When we allow our words and actions to be driven by our egos, we narrow our view of the world as we focus only on the “me”, causing us to lose sight of the bigger picture, the bigger lesson or message. Be present with those around you. This may sound like an insurmountable goal given all the technological distractions we have in society today, but it is achievable. Being present takes discipline. By discipline I don’t mean something unpleasant or a chore that is imposed from outside. Rather, discipline is 44 The Green Living Magazine may 2014 an organic process that expands naturally from within, driven by your preferences and your values. Being present means embracing a state of simplicity; put away the pacifiers (gizmos, gadgets, earplugs) and simply look, observe, and appreciate the people around you, the people you live with and work with. At home, families have to make a collaborative effort to connect. Why not try going on a techno-diet together (turn off your cell phones and stay away from Facebook for two hours when everyone is at home together)? What would that be like? Pay attention to the good deeds that others do and praise them as they carry out these deeds. Acknowledge the goodness in others — with a kind word, a compliment, praise, thanks. When you allow yourself to see goodness in others and in the world and feel goodness, a great sense of good health and wholesomeness fills your life, and you cannot help but project that goodness and healthiness to others. Trust in yourself and your ability to choose the highest good at all times. Know that you are equipped with the knowledge you need to create health and harmony in your home and workspace – all you need to do is apply it to daily living. Remember, harmony is about pleasing… pleasing sounds, a pleasing combination or arrangement of different things. By choosing to please ourselves and others through choosing the highest good at all times, we create harmony in our lives. I encourage you to continue seeking knowledge and start applying the principles of harmonic living to every moment of your day.
