CONTAINMENT&SUITABILITY



Safety fencing must be in place and inspected before the park is open and the rides
commence.
The ride area perimeter must consist of a barrier that the dumpers are unable to either
climb over or push through. The barrier must not in itself present an overturning
hazard.
All visitors must remain behind the safety barriers unless instructed by and
accompanied by a Marshal.

If a visitor is too small to reach the foot controls then a responsible adult must go on the machine as well and the seat belt must fit round both of them. 
Seatbelts must be worn on every ride and must fit correctly around any machine
occupants. If a visitor removes the seatbelt the ride must be stopped.
Visitors entering/exiting the area must be escorted by the ride operator and must
receive and understand clear instruction on machine controls before a ride starts.
Visitors must enter/exit machines facing the cab, with assistance if required, and must
not jump off.
Height restrictions of 48” for unaccompanied children and 36” for children accompanied
by a responsible adult must be adhered to.
A total passenger weight of 286 lbs. should not be exceeded.
Monitor ground conditions for slip/trip hazards.
Contact between the dumpers is not permitted.






SELECTION&TRAININGOFSTAFF

Operators should be 16 years of age or older, with experience of working with members of the
public.



Operators should be trained in the specific operation of the Dumper Ride.
Operators must be made aware of the specific risks and hazards of this Ride.
Managers and Supervisors should closely monitor their staff to ensure that operating
procedures are properly adhered to.

DUMPER
OPERATORS MANUAL
These rides consist of Lifton or Thwaites 1 ton dumpers operated by members of the
public. The aim of the ride is to experience driving the dumper around a set course.

MACHINES WILL NOT OPERATE UNTIL A DAILY SAFETY CHECK HAS BEEN
CARRIED OUT BY THE CHIEF INSTRUCTOR.
It is the Marshals’ duty to ensure the safety and well being of any visitor operating a
machine or spectating. The following guidelines must be adhered to.
SAFETY








Machines will not be allowed to run until a throttle stop has been fitted, adjusted
correctly and secured.
Machines will run at a maximum speed of 4 M.P.H.
Machines will operate on a one way system course
Do not turn your back to any machine.
Do not stand between bucket and driving position.
The use of the machines horn is not permitted except to attract attention in an
emergency.
If any defect occurs, machine must be taken out of service and reported at once and
will not be used again until signed off by Chief Instructor.
Loading / unloading must only take place from the loading platform.
STABILITY



Machine and surrounding area will be visually inspected before each ride.
Machine must be on level ground.
Skip must be in lowered position while machine is in motion.
MOTION






Travelling on these machines by Marshals, whilst being driven by another party, is
not permitted under any circumstances.
Marshals must not leave the machines or area unattended.
Engine must be stopped during loading/unloading.
Machine must be out of gear and engine switched off before the seat belt is removed.
Loading/unloading must be carried out by a Marshal.
Under no circumstances must customers or Marshals enter the loading area where
the Dumpers drive. There is a serious danger of anyone who enters this area being
crushed between two Dumpers.

Read and understood the Risk Assessment.
Gained familiarity with all the vehicle controls prior to the ride being opened to the
public.
Must fully understand and has practised assisting visitors onto and off the vehicle
and is aware of the risks associated with these procedures.
Correctly fastened seat belts and understands the importance of correctly fitting seat
belts.
Understands the need to keep their feet well clear of the Dumper wheels.
Understands the need to keep well clear of moving machines and how to avoid
becoming trapped between two machines.
Understands the dangers of allowing undersized children on the ride.
Aware of the “crush area” of the articulated vehicle and understands the risks
associated with this.
Must be aware of the motion of the dumper skip and understood the risks associated
with this.
Has gained an understanding from the experienced Marshal of how to monitor the
condition of the vehicle.
Must gain familiarity with the course layout and its particular characteristics and have
an understanding of the importance of the one-way system course.

Gain experience of observing and maintaining contact with the visitors.

Neither Marshals or visitors are

Dumper enters the loading area the
gear lever will put in neutral and the
engine switched off until re-loaded
and the next ride is ready to depart.

always be done on the left-hand side
(nearside).
MARSHAL TRAINING AND SUPERVISION






The Marshal must read and understand the Risk Assessment. A copy of this will be issued to the Marshal to keep.
The Marshal will be placed in the care of, and instructed by a competent Marshal for a minimum of 1 day as detailed
on the Training Record document.
The Marshal must become familiar with the ride and practice driving it before taking any visitors on the ride.
A senior manager will monitor this training and an assessment of his/her competence will be made.
Training records will be updated.
Senior managers will continue to monitor the operation of the Dumper Ride on a regular basis throughout each day
and remind Marshals of correct procedures where appropriate.
DAILY CHECKS AND MAINTENANCE


Maintenance must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturers machine manual by a competent person.
Daily checks must be carried out in accordance with the “Daily Check Sheet” by a senior manager.
