Crimp Tooling
SDE (standard die envelope) is a new,
flexible approach to crimp tooling,
that allows use of the same dies on
tooling across a range of application
platforms. Dies are interchangeable
in tools from portable hand tools—
manual or battery-powered—
to pneumatic hand tools and electric
bench terminators. It’s a family of
tools that you can take from bench
to production or into the field,
without the need for dies fitted to
each kind of tool.

Hand Tool

Versatile. As part of the SDE family of
tools, the system accommodates dozens of
interchangeable dies in an ever-expanding
range, including those for open-barrel contacts and terminals. Many die sets have multiple cavities for crimping more than one
wire or terminal size at the same time.
The unique geometry of this tool
results in a comfortable, easy-to-use handle
design that is unmatched in the market.
Dependable.The tool is constructed
• User-adjustable ratchet control
and emergency ratchet release
of durable high-carbon steel with extra
strength pivot pins, for maximum reliability
and long-life precision. Locators are
included with pin-and-socket style tools.
They help properly locate the contact in
the die set, provide a wire stop, and help
minimize contact rotation and bending during crimping.
Convenient. User convenience and comfort features are evident throughout. Useradjustable ratchet control is provided for
complete crimp cycling that helps eliminate
partial crimps. An emergency ratchet
release allows the user to open the tool
jaws at any time during the crimp cycle.To
reduce handle force, the linkage was
designed to match the forces required to
crimp our largest insulated terminal.The
result is dramatically less hand force than
comparable tools.The angled head and specially designed handles provide comfortable
operation.

The SDE Electric Terminator offers excellent
price to performance ratio in a compact
benchtop unit with the features normally
found on more expensive models. It is ideally suited for low to medium volume bench
production and harness assembly.
As part of the SDE family, it is compatible
with a broad range of crimp dies that are
fully interchangeable among tools and tool
platforms.

The sprung shut jaws grip the terminal prior

CERTI-CRIMP Hand Tools
are top-of-the-line, premium, hand-operated tools
for crimping a broad
array of terminals, contacts and special wiring
devices available from
Tyco Electronics. They are
designed to exacting specifications to produce consistent, high-quality terminations. A potential service life of over 50,000
cycles is possible, depending on operator care.
There are currently seven
basic styles of
CERTI-CRIMP Hand Tools.
The choice depends on the
product being applied
and/or your preferred
method of application. For
example, open barrel contacts typically require
straight-action die movement to minimize possible
rotation during crimping.
Or, if your application
requires crimping different

These tools are versatile, convenient crimpers for factory or field use. Ideally
suited for R&D prototyping, networking applications, and commercial, industrial,
and institutional maintenance work. SDE family options are compatible with a
broad range of crimp dies that are fully interchangeable among tools and tool
platforms.The kit includes the tool, two batteries, and a charger.
Versatile. As an SDE tool, the system accommodates dozens of interchangeable dies in an ever-expanding range, including those for closed- and open-barrel contacts and terminals. Many die sets have multiple cavities for crimping

The U-dies, made with the AMP-design precision and performance you’ve come
to expect, are well suited for applications
requiring a crimp force of up to 14 tons
[125 kN]. For wire sizes requiring more
than 14 tons [125 kN],Tyco Electronics
offers five heavy-duty AMP crimp head configurations that are compatible with shank
dies.

There are four light-duty crimp head
options, including three in the U-die format.
U-dies are available in two types, with 1 in
[25 mm] and 1.5 in [38 mm] stroke, respectively.The two 12 ton [101 kN] head
options have 1 in [25 mm] stroke.The
14 ton [125 kN] head is for larger products
that call for a 1.5 in [38 mm] stroke. Also
available is an integrated head/die for crimping #8 to #2 SOLISTRAND terminals.The
heavy-duty heads are available in five different configurations.

The basic 10,000 psi hydraulic tool system
requires a pump, hose (multiple lengths are
available with all configurations), crimp head,
and crimp die.There is a Tyco Electronics
hydraulic pump to meet the demands of
any crimping application. For maximum
portability, the hand-held crimping tool with
rechargeable battery is an effective solution.
Or, to power a standard crimping system
at any location, order the Portable Battery
Hydraulic Unit. For fixed crimping locations,
you can choose between a 110 V or 220 V
Electric Hydraulic Pump (with optional
remote hand control), or manual foot and
hand hydraulic pumps.

Kappa 220, 225, 235 and 240 strippers support a variety of processing options such as wire marking with hot-stamp or ink jet markers. Resistance Measurements
The range of test systems can be supplied in three formats either Two-wire, Four-wire, or
a Dual systems capable of performing both two and four wire measurement. The fundamental difference is explained on the following page

Two-Wire Measurement
The Two-wire measurement technique is typically found in general purpose test equipment such as multi-meters.
When measuring low resistance measurements using the two-wire technique, the test lead or test interface wiring
will be in series with the device under test. The example clearly demonstrates this.
With a constant test current of 1 Amp flowing
through the circuit a volt drop of 6.010v is measured, therefore displaying a resistance of 6.01
Ohms. All contact resistances and test lead resistances are added into the test value. If the test lead
and interface wiring changes the test resistance is
greatly effected. In this typical example the measurement error is >60,000%.
Four-Wire Measurement
The Four-wire measurement technique is found in some higher specification ATE, more commonly known as Kelvin
measurement. When measuring low resistance measurements using the four-wire technique the test lead or test
interface wiring will be automatically nulled out. The example clearly demonstrates this.
With a constant test current of 1 Amp flowing
through the circuit a volt drop of 0.010v is measured,
therefore displaying a resistance of 0.01 Ohms. If the

Most Aerospace and Defense companies have adopted the Four-wire continuity measurement technique as
the industry standard. The Two-wire technique is typically used in automotive wiring, computer cables and other
low specification applications to verify that an item is wired correctly and not to verify the integrity or performance
of a cable.
Using the four-wire technique would highlight the following common faults:
Individual strands of wire broken
Wrong gauge wire fitted
Poor crimp connection
Dry solder joints
Squashed wires
Dirty connections
Poorly mating connectors
Bad grounding/shielding
A two-wire system with anything more than a few 100mm of interface wiring would not detect the faults above.
Many of the cables being tested in the aerospace sector are of very low resistance and one would expect that with
the ever-increasing complexity of onboard electrical systems and avionics the accuracy of measurement of cable
harnesses will become more and more important...four-wire techniques will become the norm.

The PDA is the world’s first fully integrated, automated high-performance
Mil-spec ruggedized and easy to use handheld unit, with all the diagnostic
functionality that any field electronic or electrical engineer could ever need
for testing cables and components.
The TDR will automatically and reliably identify and locate to an accuracy
of less than 110cm over a distance of 100m “hard” (open and short) and
“soft” (insulation damage, corrosion, liquid ingression, bad crimps & connections and excessive pressure) on all types of metal cables including
Single Core wires using a ground plane.
• PDA testing can be done on passive cables (no power) or on live cables
(using Phoenix’s optional isolator) with 0 volts - 60 volts DC or
0 volts - 310 volts AC with 50Hz to 400Hz.
• Using the DMM option, the unit can measure Voltage —
(Ranges: DC / 20mV, 200mV, 2V, 25V and 250V — AC / 20mVrms,
200mVrms, 2Vrms, 25Vrms nd 250Vrms)
• Resistance — (Standard two-wire or four-wire ranges: 200Ω, 2kΩ, 20kΩ,
