The “Ciudad Vieja” Ciudad Vieja is the name of the oldest part of the city of Montevideo, capital city of Uruguay. Nowadays, Ciudad Vieja is a neighborhood of this city. In the last couple of years it has gone through a major transformation that has made it the main nightlife centre in town. It is in this area where most of the nightclubs are, and also it hosts the 'Mercado Del Puerto' a traditional venue for Uruguayan food and beverages. The main port of Uruguay is located in Ciudad Vieja. Part of this transformation is due to the campaign made by the mayor since this part of the city had been in a state of abandonment for decades. Until 1829 it was surrounded by a wall that protected it from possible invasions. After the wall was torn down, the only part of it that was kept was its gateway, which is up to this day an emblem of this part of town. Some streets remind the presence of the wall, like Ciudadela, which has this name due to the fact that it was near but at this point that the British managed to open a breach on the wall during the 1807 British invasion. The old street Sarandí was turned into a pedestrian walkway in 1992, which increased its commercial and tourist attractiveness. In 2005 it was extended to beyond the Constitution Square. Ciudad Vieja has the most beautiful buildings from the colonial era and the first decades of independence. The Cabildo, the Solís Theatre, the Metropolitan Cathedral and several museums, like the Museo Torres García are among the most impressive ones. Also several design shops and recycled loft floors flourish in the streets near the port. Terminal Tres Cruces It is the main bus terminal of Uruguay to concentrate the largest passenger traffic and buses, both national and international, in sharp year on year increase. The terminal has more than 20 million visitors a year, of which 12,000,000 are passengers traveling to and from Montevideo. Explanada municipal This famous statue "The David" by Miguel Angel, is across the street from the esplanade. It is located on the main avenue of the city, July 18, in the neighborhood of the center. Its design was led by Mauricio Cravotto, Uruguayan architect and construction began in 1935. “Estadio Centenario” The “Estadio Centenario” was inaugurated on July 18 of 1930, in the game of World Cup 1930 which pitted Uruguay Selection and selection of Peru. Its name derives from the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the swearing in of the first Constitution of Uruguay. It was built especially for the international tournament organization, most migrants for a record period of nine months. At first, it would be made all World Cup matches, however, the heavy rains that hit Montevideo prevented long before the end of the construction of Centennial colossus, so that several parties had done in the great Stadium Central Park belonging to the National Club Football and disappeared in Pocitos Stadium, belonging to the “Club Atlético Peñarol”. Since then, " The Centenary of Montevideo" (as he is popularly known) , hosted several international tournaments for higher level teams , especially the South American 1942, 1956 , 1967 , the World Club Cup in 1980 , and finally the Cup America 1995 , all of them won by Uruguay . The July 18, 1983 it is declared by FIFA “World Football Historical Monument, the only building of this kind that holds that title in the world. Currently, the Uruguayan football team plays at this stage their home games, like applying any Uruguayan team play their matches at this stage. “Biblioteca Nacional” On August 4, 1815, Father Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga sent a letter to the council, proposing to supplement with good books, lack of teachers and institutions. In this context, raised the need for a public library where young people could attend and all those who were interested in access to knowledge. Jose Artigas, who was at Camp Purification, sent a note dated August 12, 1815 the City Council, giving the nod to proceed with the creation of that first public library. An interesting contribution to provide books to the new library came through the legacy of José Manuel Pérez Castilian priest, who bequeathed a considerable body of literature. To this were added the book donation provided by José Raimundo Guerra, the Franciscans and the donation of one Larrañaga who already owned at that time a vast collection. MERCADO DEL PUERTO!!! One of the places that touristic bus recommends is Mercado Del Puerto. The Mercado Del Puerto is a gastronomic and cultural tour. According to the historians, in 1865 is was a corporation established at the initiative of Pedro Sanchez Zumaran, merchant, in order to build a market in Montevideo. With this target bought the land to the north shore of the bay, in the area known as “The bath of the fathers”, Part of the block bounded by the present streets Perez Castellanos, Stones, Maciel and Rambla August 25. PARQUE RODO The games of " Parque Rodo " began on January 24, 1889 the first game was the rollercoaster. Between 1903 and 1904 they built an artificial lake with faux rustic bridges, Central Avenue, terrace for music, the castle on the lake and children's playground. It’s located in Montevideo’s seafront. In the pictures, there are some of the games of the Park, e.g. : El gusano loco. El barco pirata. El mambo. Las sillas voladoras. Las sombrillas. In the park, there is a huge lake were you can take a ride on a boat or the classical “Lancha a pedal”. There´s a library that it´s located in the Castillo Del Parque Rodó and there, they offer free courses for all ages. This is the Castle: ↓ This is the library: ↓ Punta Carretas Mall Punta Carretas Shopping, housed in a former prison until 1986, is the city's largest and most upscale mall, measuring in at 199 stores, cinemas, a food court and other facilities. The building of the former prison was designed by architect Domingo Sanguinetti in 1905. Architects J. C. López y Asoc. S. A. and C. Rodríguez refurbished it into a shopping mall. It's near the Sheraton Montevideo, a 10-minute cab ride from the Old City. It’s located in Ellauri and Solano streets. The Legislative Palace The Legislative Palace in Montevideo, Uruguay, is the site where the Uruguayan parliament meets. The construction of this building started in 1904 sponsored by the government of President José Battle y Ordoñez. It was designed by Italian architects Vittorio Meano and Gaetano Moretti, who planned the building's interior. Among the notable contributors to the project was sculptor José Belloni, who created numerous reliefs and allegorical sculptures for the building. The building was inaugurated on August 25th, 1925 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The inauguration was presided over by President José Serrato; before then, the Uruguayan parliament assembled at the Montevideo Cabildo. The building was declared a National Historic Monument in 1975 by the government of President Juan María Bordaberry. Built in1985 by ELADIO DIESTE (with his typical Dome roof) it was the first river plate´s shopping center. Located in the most beautiful neighbor of Montevideo it has 181 shops and 2051 parking places It has the most has the best It has 94 clothes toy stores, 5 visited cinema; also it restaurants of the city. shops, 1 supermarket, 3 libraries, and the rest are home decoration store. It possesses 2.000 visitors per day and half of them are tourists. You can take the Touristic Bus at11:25, 12:25, 13:25, 14:25, 15:25, 16:25 and 17:25 BOTANICAL GARDEN Founded by ATILIO LOMBARDO the botanical garden has many different plants, it is the first and the unique botanical garden of URUGUAY. It´s separated in geographical groups for example: AFRICA, EUROPE, AMERICA AND ASIA. It contains a hothouse with a lot of exotic plants. Today it is maintained by the Montevideo´s town hall. In this place people can take a walk and enjoy nature.
