Annual Report 2014
Dear Friends,
The life of an entertainment professional has always had its ups and downs, and
since 1882 The Actors Fund has been there to help anyone working in the business
whenever they’re in need, crisis or transition.
More than 130 years after we first opened our doors, we remain a vital resource
when people need emergency financial assistance, support in navigating a crisis,
help in securing affordable health insurance, healthcare or housing, help in finding
sideline work and new careers, and much more.
Our programs and services are more necessary than ever. In 2014 The Actors Fund
helped a record 21,993 people—which represents a staggering 23% increase in only
one year—and we distributed more than $2 million in emergency financial assistance. Your generosity assures that we’ll continue to offer support and guidance to
everyone working throughout the performing arts and entertainment community,
whether they are on stage, on either side of the camera, in the writers’ room, in the
wings, in the shop, or in the studio.
We thank our Board of Trustees for their diligent dedication to our community,
as well as the tireless work of our caring staff and devoted volunteers. We are
especially grateful to the thousands of donors who give so generously to help
those in need: without them, we couldn’t do what we need to do every single day.
We also extend a very special thank-you to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. In
2014, BC/EFA contributed $4,603,000, bringing their total support since 1988 to
an incredible $73 million. We are deeply grateful for BC/EFA’s commitment to the
entertainment community, and their leadership in assuring The Fund is there for
everyone who needs our help.

National Help for
Everyone in the
Performing Arts and
Entertainment
The Actors Fund’s range of programs and services
offered nationwide are a vital resource for professionals
working in performing arts and entertainment, at
all points in their career, from musicians to writers,
stagehands to directors, camera operators to actors.
The Actors Fund is here to help everyone throughout
the industry in times of need, crisis or transition.
Health Services
Affordable Housing
With the 2014 implementation of the Affordable Care Act,
The Fund’s Artists Health Insurance Resource Center
(AHIRC) continues to provide support and advice to the many
people facing changes in their healthcare and insurance. In
2014 AHIRC held a record number of seminars and counseling sessions across the country and online, helping individuals and small businesses understand how to take advantage
of the new law. We also continued to provide vital free medical care via New York’s Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic (the
only one of its kind in Manhattan). For more, see page 5.
Considering that the vast majority of professionals in the
entertainment industry earn modest incomes, the ever-rising
cost of housing makes it challenging for many in our community to find affordable housing. To help, The Actors Fund’s
Housing Resource Center offers affordable housing seminars
in New York and Los Angeles, provides one-on-one counseling
and shares information about affordable unit availability.

Keeping our
Entertainment
Community
Healthy and
Insured
The Actors Fund’s Artists Health Insurance Resource
Center (AHIRC) helped even more people in
entertainment in 2014, and continues to counsel our
community and provide information to make sure
everyone can make informed decisions about their
health care and health insurance.
“Obamacare has been a blockbuster success in the entertainment industry and The Actors
Fund has played a vital role in
helping thousands of low-income
actors, writers and other industry professionals obtain low-cost
health insurance.”
AHIRC also works hand-in-hand with entertainment
unions and an array of local performing arts
organizations to spread the word about available
assistance and upcoming seminars. In addition to the
one-on-one counseling and telephone helplines that
continue to be available, The Fund is ensuring every
artist can find affordable, reliable health care—no
matter where they are.

A type 1 diabetic, James was paying his own medical and
prescription bills after his Actors’ Equity health insurance
lapsed. The team at the Hirschfeld Clinic helped him get
free bloodwork, wrote new insulin prescriptions, found him
low-cost prescription plans and arranged a deal in which half
of his insulin was free. “All of the care at the Al Hirschfeld
Clinic is top notch,” says James.
“I really can’t imagine how I
would have been able to live

Performing Arts
An ever-changing work world requires a flexible,

share ideas and inspiration. When entertainment and
performing arts professionals are looking for sideline
work or new careers, they know The Career Center at
The Actors Fund is on top of current workforce trends.

Uniting to Help More Dancers Nationally
The Career Center at The Actors Fund has a new name! Formerly
The Actors Fund Work Program, our updated name reflects the
broad scope of activities, programs and services available to
everyone in our community throughout their working lives.
The Actors Fund and Career Transition For Dancers have joined
together as one organization to help even more dancers across
the country. CTFD’s mission and programs are in alignment
with two existing Actors Fund programs: The Dancers’ Resource,
founded by two-time Tony Award® winner Bebe Neuwirth, which
addresses the emotional and practical needs of injured dancers
and dancer wellness, and The Career Center at The Actors Fund.
The Career Center assists our community in identifying and
finding meaningful sideline employment or, if desired, a new
career, with a goal of helping people increase their economic
stability through alternative forms of work.
Through one-on-one career counseling, seminars, workshops
and panel discussions, Career Center counselors, employment
specialists and teaching staff help thousands of people every year
identify transferable skills, create a top notch resume, master
new technology and land interviews that can lead to
supplementary income.

ultimately pursued a career in social services, and after dedicating years
to helping seniors and disadvantaged young adults, he brings his mastery of workforce development to the entertainment community.

Sina is a Los Angeles-based actress and singer. When she
found herself unable to find sideline work to support herself,
she turned to The Career Center, which helped her regain
her confidence, hone her job-seeking skills, and ultimately
connect her with a position in IT.
Unsure what direction to take after giving up a long-time
sideline job, actor and voiceover artist Desmond Dutcher
utilized The Career Center’s free seminars, classes and weekly
job bulletin to plan his next steps. Today, he’s found a position
that he finds meaningful, with the flexibility to pursue work as
an actor and voiceover artist.

Joining Forces with
IATSE to Care for
Our Community in
Los Angeles
On the West Coast, The Actors Fund continues to
expand its commitment to the creative community
through programs including Looking Ahead,
monthly Valley Days (see below), one-on-one
counseling sessions, and more. In 2014, there was
an unprecedented increase in people seeking
assistance—led by those seeking affordable housing
and healthcare counseling services—and a record
number of individuals were helped via The Fund’s
Western Region offices.
Celebrating
Looking Ahead!
Joining Forces in Los Angeles to
Help More People in Entertainment
The Actors Fund’s Looking Ahead program works with young
performers ages 9–18 in the Los Angeles area to develop
the values, skills and confidence they need to make successful transitions to fulfilling adult lives. Founded in 2003 in
partnership with SAG-AFTRA, Looking Ahead is an innovative
program tailored to help young performers and their families
address the unique issues they face working in the entertainment industry. Now serving more than 300 young people,
their families and alumni, the program creates a nurturing
environment where young performers get support through
individual, family and education counseling, leadership
development, community service and social events.

Los Angeles is a vast geographical region, and distance can
serve as a hurdle to making connections or getting help.
To help alleviate a bit of the distance for some, The Fund
continued monthly Valley Days gatherings, hosted by Local
80 IATSE in Burbank, taking The Fund’s seminars, services
and special events a little closer to people living in the Valley.
And more recently, the Entertainment Industry Referral and
Assistance Center in Los Angeles was integrated into the
services of The Fund. The program now occupies a beautiful new office suite in Local 80 IATSE’s building in Burbank,
expanding our capacity to improve and increase our services
to the entertainment community in southern California.

the Looking Ahead Awards, was held in December at the
Taglyan Cultural Complex and helped raise awareness for
the program.
The evening honored leaders and former young performers
who continue to inspire everyone by living Looking Ahead’s
core values of personal growth, education, leadership and
community service: Two-time Academy Award® winner
Hilary Swank presented her mother Judy with the Looking

Affordable and
Supportive Housing
In addition to serving as a home for nearly 600
residents, The Actors Fund’s four housing facilities
(Los Angeles’s Palm View Residence, New York City’s
The Schermerhorn and Dorothy Ross Friedman
Residence, and The Lillian Booth Actors Home in
Englewood, New Jersey) offer a full range of programs
and services that ensure residents have a stable base,
can find help in managing a crisis or life transition,
and have the opportunity to enhance and improve their
lives through the supportive services they need to thrive
as artists.
Help Finding Affordable Housing
The Housing Resource Center works to keep the creative
community aware of affordable housing opportunities in Los
Angeles and New York, and provides guidance and support
throughout the application process. The Fund offers informative
seminars on affordable housing at multiple locations,
training participants how to apply for new affordable housing
opportunities in the region.
In 2014, Housing seminars on both coasts served 1,437
participants, while drop-in Q&A groups and one-on-one technical
assistance helped applicants navigate the application process. In
addition, webinars were offered to make information even more
easily accessible to everyone, in spite of location or schedule.

editor Blake Ross.
In August, children participating in Rosie’s Theatre Kids’
summer program delighted
residents at The Lillian Booth
Actors Home with a performance of monologues,
songs and musical theatre
numbers. They also enjoyed
hearing the stories of the
residents’ own rich careers
in the arts.

Bequests
The Actors Fund offers our supporters the opportunity to purchase charitable gift annuities in every state in the country. These
annuities offer donors dependable income while providing critical support to The Fund. To make a special bequest, contact
Jay Haddad, Manager of Planned Giving & Major Gifts, at 917.281.5928 or email [email protected] or visit
actorsfund.org/PlannedGiving.
Join Marion and Francis Lederer—Part of the Legacy of Giving
The Lederers’ made a generous bequest to The Fund, with an initial distribution of $475,000 in 2012. Born in Canada, Marion attended
the University of Toronto and UCLA. She was Los Angeles Commissioner of Cultural Affairs from 1980–85, and was a founding member
of the American National Theatre and Academy (ANTA). Francis Lederer was born in Prague and, after service in World War I, became
one of Europe’s top male film stars. He moved from silent films to talkies, and was as comfortable in films as on stage. He moved to
the United States and became a citizen in 1939 where his performing career flourished. The Lederers were married in 1941 and their
marriage lasted for 59 years. They were proud Ambassadors for UNICEF, and Marion founded the United Nations’ Sister City Program.
We are grateful for the examples they set as citizens of the world and supporters of The Actors Fund.
