A Midwestern Newsman in the
King of Late Night’s Court
By Martha Michael
Smyth Considers Run
for Council
By Lee Barnathan
When you read Dave Berg’s latest book, “Behind the Curtain: An Insider’s View of Jay
Leno’s ‘Tonight Show,’” you begin to see that Leno really is the “King of Late Night Television.”
And like a character in Mark Twain’s novel (the “Yankee” in King Arthur’s Court), Berg was
the outsider who modernized Leno’s Camelot to bring it to its successful destiny.
Whether they know it or want to admit it, the three declared
Santa Clarita City Council candidates – and anyone else who
later decides to enter the race – are heading for an election
campaign unlike any before.
A great deal can change between now and the July filing date.
Others might join Mayor Bob Kellar, Councilmember TimBen
Boydston and retired aerospace engineer Alan Ferdman in the
race for two council seats. All candidates must figure out if they
want to change anything, because the election is in November
instead of April.
Although Election Day is 257 days away, four questions already
have arisen.
Will Cameron Smyth run?
It seems everyone has heard the rumors that Smyth, a former
councilmember and state assemblyman, will run again for a
council seat. Smyth admitted that he has been “encouraged by
folks across the city,” including Kellar. And Smyth is seriously
considering it.

Dave Berg
In his 18 years as co-producer of the third longest running TV show in history,
Berg booked guests and formulated questions. But, when he took his place at
the round table with creators of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” he was a
newsman amid entertainment industry “knights.”
“Getting in the entertainment industry was a fluke,” Berg said. “I had been a
journalist, starting with newspapers, then moving into radio, then television,
and ending up at NBC News. I’ve always considered myself a journalist, even
when I went in to entertainment.”
Originally from the Midwest, Berg has lived in many of the “flyover states” and
was educated at Northwestern. But anyone familiar with the entertainment industry knows that education, experience and talent are not enough to land you
in Hollywood – it also takes “being in the right place at the right time.” Berg’s
experience confirms that theory.
“I got fired from NBC News,” Berg explained. “NBC said that I could stay in my
office and use it to look for other work. I took a little walk down the hallway, and
I saw right nearby was ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.’ I didn’t even know
they were there.”
Berg’s job was to go out and find news stories, which explains why he was unaware what was happening down the hall, just three months from the show’s
launch date.
“I called my wife, Mary, and said, ‘You’re not going to believe this, but Jay Leno
is down the hall.’”
Mary Berg urged her husband to go to the office and apply for a job.
“I thought it was out of my league,” Berg said. “And I didn’t have a background
in entertainment. I was a journalist.”
Mary called him repeatedly, and he told his wife he would go apply the following morning, to which she responded, “Did you want to come home for dinner?
You tell me.”
That line in the sand would prove fateful. Dave Berg asked himself, “What’s
more intimidating? Going down there to face Jay Leno or going home and facing my wife?”
He went to Leno’s office and applied for a job, asking if the show had a job opening for a journalist, half-joking. When he handed the receptionist his application,
she congratulated Berg.
“You’re the last one to apply for a job, because we’re closing it down at 5 today,”
she said.
The time was 4:45 p.m.
And if that was not magical enough – Leno’s executive producer called out to
Berg from a back office, asking: “Where have you been all this time? I’ve been
looking for a journalist.”
The rest became television history.
Once he met with writers and producers, Berg’s purpose became clear. The newsman would be the driving force behind “branding” a new style in late night programming.
“Individually, my sense was that I need to bring something unique to the table,
because I don’t fit in here,” said Berg. “One guy had been a writer for People
Magazine and somebody else had been involved in booking game shows. My
Rolodex had no names of actors or anyone from Hollywood.”
But not everyone was on board with the new tack. According to Berg, the executive producer was the only one with this vision, that is, to book more serious
guests from the worlds of politics and sports, for instance.
“I thought, ‘Play to your own strengths and suggest people they would think it’s
crazy to book,’” said Berg. “Those types of guests are the only ones who make
any kind of difference in late night.”

Ugly Parking
By Heather Harbin
A successor to Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission
Chairman Duane Harte was appointed by the Santa Clarita City Council on
Tuesday evening. Donald S. Cruikshank will fill one unexpired term of office
on the Parks Commission, ending on Dec. 31, 2016, after a unanimous vote
by the Santa Clarita City Council.

Harte, 68, died on Nov. 23, 2015 after an apparent heart attack. He was a
longtime city commissioner and community leader in the Santa Clarita Valley.
“(Duane Harte) exemplified the very best in what the community gives,” said
Cruikshank. “He was an inspiration to all of us, and he was an inspiration to
me.”
Harte was nominated by Mayor Bob Kellar for the Parks Commission, and
as a result, Kellar is the nominating authority to fill the unexpired term of
office. Seven other community members submitted applications to fill the
remainder of Harte’s commission term, including: James H. Cansler, Patrick
Comey, Johnathan Frank, Alison Koi Howard, James McCarthy, Thomas
O’Sullivan and Judy Penman.
“Duane has been involved in the community for as long as I have known him
and before that,” said Kellar in a previous article. “He’s the heart of Santa
Clarita because he has done so much. … We lost one of our great ones this
morning. He’s a good friend. He will be sorely missed.”

Smyth
“I’ll make a decision sooner rather than later,”
Smyth said. Although he has time to formally
enter the race, “I owe it to those encouraging me
to run to make a decision well before the filing
date.”
If Smyth runs, would name recognition help or
hurt?
The name “Smyth” is well known in the valley.
Before being elected to the state legislature, Smyth
was elected to the council in 2000 and re-elected
in 2004. He twice served as mayor, in 2003 and
2005.
He followed in the footsteps of his father, Hamilton “Clyde” Smyth (1931-2012). The elder Smyth
served the William S. Hart Union High School
District as its superintendent from 1975-92 and
later served as city councilmember from 1994-98,
which included being mayor in 1997.
Saugus realtor Steve Petzold sees Smyth as a serious threat to his preferred candidates, Boydston
and Ferdman.
“People who meet Cameron feel like they know
Cameron,” Petzold said. “I think he could (win),
I think he could (finish second), which would put
him on the council. … Whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, people like Cameron.”
But a cautionary local tale is Duane Harte, who
ran for council in 2014 on the strength of his
name, but lost.
“He’s been out of Santa Clarita politics for at
least 10 years. Most people don’t know him,”
Ferdman said. “Am I terrified if Cameron gets in?
No. Would it change how we campaign? Maybe.”
everything else, which this year includes ballot
propositions, a county Board of Supervisor, state
Senate and Assembly, the U.S. Senate and House
elections, and the presidency.
Allan Cameron, a longtime resident who has run
numerous campaigns for seats on water agencies, city councils, school boards and state offices,
remembers Jan Heidt, who served several terms,
stepped down and tried to get re-elected some
years later. She lost.
Presidential elections always drive more people
to the polls; all candidates must take that into account. “Any candidate running would be insane
not to,” Cameron said.
“Everybody needs to be respectful of the competition and run a thorough campaign,” Cameron
said.
Cameron has one answer: Polling.
What about candidates running together?
If Smyth enters the race, one could say it would
be wise for Boydston and Ferdman to team up
and campaign as one slate; the same goes for
Smyth and Kellar.
But the odds of it happening are slim. Kellar and
Smyth said they’ve never done it before and won’t
start now. Cameron says that a successful slate
requires the candidates to do “a lot more of what
it takes to be a successful candidate,” meaning
whatever they have to do to get themselves elected
– including, but not limited to, exploiting social
media, pavement pounding, phone calling and
soliciting money – they have to do also for the
other candidate.
“Slates don’t get unilaterally elected,” Cameron
said. “People vote a la carte.”
Another factor to consider: Smyth has not been
part of the city’s political scene since leaving his
post to serve in the California State Assembly in
2006. He left office in 2012 to enter the private
sector, where he is now vice president of state affairs for Molina Healthcare.
“It changes the way you campaign,” Smyth said.
“How do you reach that many more people? How
do you get your message out when other candidates are trying to get their messages out?”
“If I was Cameron Smyth … I’d get funds together and get an opinion poll so as to not be in
the dark,” Cameron said.
This, however, is very expensive. Cameron, who
has commissioned polls before, says one poll costs
$50,000, and three will set you back $200,000. No
one has ever raised that kind of money for a city
council seat, he said.
So, that means candidates will have to go back to
good, old-fashioned campaigning: participate in
candidate forums, meet with as many people as
possible, exploit social media, which Cameron
calls “the newly emerged King Kong of politics.”
“They’ll be bigger numbers, but the basics are
still there,” Kellar said.
The election will be in November. What effect
will this have?
According to Cameron, this will be the first time
in 28 years the council will not have its own April
election, but instead will be on the ballot with

OPINION
Lean to the Left
The Free Market
Fallacy
My Favorite Things
By Robert Patrick Lewis
By Sylvia Turner
F
or this week’s article, I’d like to start
with a quote from one of the very few
politicians I actually respect:
“Capitalism should not be condemned, since we
haven’t had capitalism. A system of capitalism
presumes sound money, not fiat money
manipulated by a central bank. Capitalism
cherishes voluntary contracts and interest rates
that are determined by savings, not credit creation
by a central bank. It’s not capitalism when
the system is plagued with incomprehensible
rules regarding mergers, acquisitions, and stock
sales, along with wage controls, price controls,
protectionism, corporate subsidies, international
management of trade, complex and punishing
corporate taxes, privileged government contracts
to the military-industrial complex, and a foreign
policy controlled by corporate interests and
overseas investments. Add to this centralized
federal mismanagement of farming, education,
medicine, insurance, banking and welfare. This is
not capitalism!”
This quote is referencing the people (many
of whom I imagine are now supporting
Bernie Sanders) who would use the ills of
America to condemn capitalism and the free
market. Of course, this quote is from Dr.
Ron Paul and is listed on his Wikiquote.org
webpage under “Has Capitalism Failed?”
Dr. Paul is one of the few American
politicians at the national level who
is not only well-versed in micro and
macroeconomic principles, constitutional
law and fiscal responsibility, but is also
strong enough to stand up and speak about
just how far out-of-whack our “current
socialist leviathan of government” has gone.
He ran for president in 1988 as a Libertarian,
and again in 2008 and 2012 as a Republican.
He polarized the youth in a way that only
Bernie Sanders and Obama have done in the
2008 and 2012 elections, but still the GOP
was far too ignorant to pay attention to the
movement he started in this country.
His son, who is also a physician (who
provided free eye surgeries for low-income
patients during his campaign), and a senator
(the only senator in the presidential race who
actually did his job and showed up for votes
while campaigning for president), ran this
year as well, but suspended his campaign
very recently.
So why were Dr. Paul (both of them) the
only politicians smart or willing enough
to stand up and talk about the issues with
money and corruption in our current
political climate? They exhibited a common
trait , which does not occur in American
politicians of late: they actually believe what
they are saying.
This is the same reason Donald Trump has
found such star status. I was listening to Fox
News last night repeatedly mention how the
GOP establishment is pulling out all of the
stops to keep Donald Trump from winning
the ticket. Unfortunately, what they (and the
GOP marketing/PR machine, which I’ve
previously stated should be fired from top
to bottom) don’t seem to understand is that
that is precisely why people are polarizing
behind Trump. Regardless of what he says,
they know HE says it, and not his campaign
staff, PR team, campaign donors or handlers,
whereas the other candidates are fed their
lines and “opinions.”
I do have a lot of respect for The Donald,
knowing how hard it is to go against the
grain, finance a long shot and put it all out
there. But the problem that I have with him
lies exactly in Dr. Paul’s statement above. I
believe wholeheartedly that unholy alliance
of business and politics is what got us into
our current political mess.
As an MBA, financial advisor and
entrepreneur, I am far from anti-business, but
I am fiercely anti-crony capitalism. I am a
believer in the free market, and feel the only
way we get the best out of our corporations
(and society) is if there is pure, unadulterated
competition, forcing every company,
incumbent blue-chip or not, to constantly
strive to be the best and most innovative.
Not only do those who take part in crony
capitalism (or the ability for lobbyists and
special interest groups to buy a politician’s
opinion) write their own legislation for their
puppet politicians to slip in while nobody’s
looking and tarnish the reputation of our
politics, but they also make us a laughing
stock in the face of the world.
So, while I respect The Donald as a
businessman, I cannot say that I do as
much as a politician. So, who do I respect
and who am I watching for the current
presidential race? My favorite candidate
just gave back $1.8 million in unused senate
office money. You won’t see any of the other
candidates doing anything remotely similar,
as they are fully bought into the current big
government, spend every taxpayer penny
they’re given, and make sure it’s spent with
the people who endorsed their campaign.
And unfortunately for us, that senator who
put his money where his mouth is and
proved that his actions match his rhetoric
was Senator Rand Paul. The one person
who actually says what he believes and
cares about our individual liberties could
have been our next president, but instead
resigned his campaign because all of our
attention was focused on mudslinging and
sensationalist candidates who are bought
and sold like poker chips.
Good job, America. I’m watching with dread
as we drive the nails into our own coffin.
Robert Patrick Lewis was a Green Beret OIF/OEF combat veteran with 10th SFG(A), is an award winning author of “The
Pact” and “Love Me When I’m Gone: the true story of life, love
and loss for a Green Beret in post-9/11 war” and the host of “The
Green Beret MBA” and “Center Mass with Rob and Silent J”
programs on Vets on Media. In addition to its own editorials, Vets
on Media publishes diverse opinions from outside writers.
T
he drama of the race is as
fun as ever.
As Republicans continue to push
Donald Trump onward and
upward, the image is coming in
more clearly: nicer drapes in the
Lincoln bedroom, new fine bone
china ordered for state dinners,
Jackie Kennedy-like tours of the
White House.
Melania Trump? No – Hillary
Clinton.
As someone who leans left, I
kinda liked your middle-of-theroad guys. Plus, I thought you’d
actually have a chance against
our candidate (largely assumed
to be Hillary). But they’re dropping like flies, which leaves you
a guy who can’t win (Trump).
It reminds me of the line in
“The Sound of Music,” where
Captain von Trapp is on the
balcony with the Baroness von
Schrader (with whom he has just
broken his engagement). They
are looking out at Maria in the
distance and the Baroness says,
“Somewhere out there is a lady
I think (important pause) will
never be a nun.”
That’s Trump for every reason
imaginable. It was hilarious
watching 69-year-old Trump’s
45-year-old wife, Melania, in
an interview with Mika from
“Morning Joe.” Not only did
the former model from Slovenia sound like an airhead, how
would you like your First Lady
to get hit with questions about
YOUR PRESIDENT’s vulgarity, language, racism and misogynistic words and behavior?
Another “Sound of Music”
interchange comes to mind.
The von Trapp’s family friend/
music agent, Max, urges Maria
to get Captain von Trapp to
cooperate with the new government order. Max says, “He’s got
to at least pretend to work with
these people. You must convince
him.” Maria responds with, “I
can’t ask him to be less than he
is.”
In this case, however, Melania
would have to answer, “I can’t
ask him to be more than he is.”
A half a day before the year’s
first presidential primary in New
Hampshire, John Kasich ranted
to his supporters, 20 percent of
whom were college students,
that we spend too much time on
our devices. Oops!
According to Mother Jones,
“He held up an iPhone, as he
continued: ‘We have to slow our
lives down and listen to people’s
hurts and victories.’ He repeated
this call to de-accelerate: ‘When
we do … it’s a more beautiful
world.’ Members of the audience were listening attentively
but several looked puzzled. And
Kasich gazed toward the stained
glass at the back of the chapel
and said with a sigh, ‘So why
don’t we slow down and listen
and help one another?’”
Oh, maaaannn! And yesterday
Kasich said, “I don’t know if my
purpose is to be president” and
“We’ll see where it ends up.”
And here’s the punch line (or
knockout, more likely): “Maybe it
will be a really small one somewhere in my kid’s school. Who
knows?”
Whaaat?!?! Just order yourself
a nice, bronze, apple-shaped
paperweight, because that’s
exactly where you’re gonna be,
Mr. Kasich.
While we’re looking at gaffes,
we can’t leave out Dr. Ben Carson, whose most recent one is
that Obama “was raised white.”
Then he went on, unfortunately
for him and his supporters. “So,
for him to, you know, claim that,
you know, he identifies with the
experience of black Americans,
I think, is a bit of a stretch,” said
Dr. Carson.
Tuning in to all these developments makes me feel something best described by another
notable quote from “The Sound
of Music.”
It’s Maria’s first day on the job
and the children are playing
incessant tricks on her. Kurt von
Trapp admits, “I haven’t had so
much fun since the day we put
glue on Fraulein Josephine’s
toothbrush.”
Let’s move on to presidential
candidate John Kasich, who is
one of the “normal guys” who’s
blowing it for the Republicans.

Where Credit is Due:
A shout-out to the new owners of The Signal: Chuck Champion, Russ Briley
and Gary Sproule. They asked for a meeting with me last week and I must say
they were cordial, respectful, and even complimentary. Don’t get me wrong –
we are still fierce competitors, they don’t appreciate some of the remarks I’ve
made about their paper and we vehemently disagree on a newspaper legal matter
involving both of us. But, the meeting was constructive and somewhat fruitful.
To put it in perspective, the group who previous owned the daily paper wouldn’t
give me the time of the day when I reached out to them, so this was rather
refreshing. Thanks, guys!
Damn Right, We’re Angry:
The new catch phrase from the political pundits is angry voters. The ones on
CNN and MSNBC seem confused as to how this is possible. Let me help them
understand: Those of us with common sense, common values and love of
country see what is happening to this nation we love and are very pissed off
(angry)! We are sick of elected Republican officials who say they have the spine
to stand up to the establishment on both sides of the aisle, and then fold like the
Dodgers do every year.
We are sick of the Republican cowards who give in on every issue that causes
harm to our economic and social fabric! We’re sick of them being afraid of
their own political shadows, allowing funding of Obamacare and Planned
Parenthood after they said they wouldn’t. We’re sick of the current president
and his pompous attitude, kicking Republicans’ butts all over Washington. His
attitude on scandals, healthcare, hatred of Israel, fondness of Muslims, assault
on the traditional family, human life in the womb and religious liberty – they all
infuriate us.
We’re angry they don’t seem to give a rip about stopping the oppressive taxation
and regulations that are strangling our economy. We’re angry our Republican
representatives are just like the Democrats and don’t seem to have much of a clue
about the horrible ramifications of the $20 trillion debt that is staring us all in the
face. I could go on, but …
9
(why is it called “social” – shouldn’t it be called “money security”?) employee sent me
a letter saying I needed to contact her immediately regarding my mom’s case. I
left her numerous voicemails over the span of two weeks before I finally got a call
back. Even then, she acted put-out. While there are certainly some conscientious
workers, for the most part, the IRS, the post office and the DMV all have
employees who act like we’re intruding on their comfort zone when we deal
with them. The worst I’ve dealt with recently is superior court system employees
(I’m not talking jury duty either). The ones I have interacted with answer simple
questions with a condescending “you idiot” tone of voice.
How does this relate to socialism? It reminds me of spoiled brats who get
everything handed to them without having to lift much of a finger, and when
they do, it shows in their behavior. These folks have such an attitude of
entitlement; they develop a feeling of superiority over people they think are
personally beneath them. With no accountability or ramifications from a poor
job performance, they get away with treating people like crap.
Socialism is a Gratitude Killer:
Living with life necessities (including free college) being handed out like candy
at Halloween can turn people into crazed takers. Worst of all, their attitude
turns from gratitude to pissitude when things don’t come easy for them. Faced
with difficulty, living without their wants, having to do unreasonable tasks (in
their minds) to earn it, and feelings of being short changed result in frustration,
anger and panic. That’s when we see riots in socialistic countries when the
government’s money runs out. Those who rely on government to satisfy them
socially and economically act like out-of-control kids when they don’t get what
they want at the grocery store.
If Hillary or Bernie keep up with their Santa Claus type promises and get elected
because of them, this nation will decline further faster then it already has under
Obama. Like Margaret Thatcher said, “Socialism is great until you run out of other
people’s money.” In our case, when we run out of money the result will be a civil
shattering, as the attitudes of the takers will turn into massive looting and killings,
making the attitude of the current government workers we deal with look like a
gentle Santa Claus.
So, damn right we’re angry, and that’s why Mr. Trump with his non-political
weirdness is grabbing so many people’s attention. We’re so desperate for change, he
looks like the only one with enough stones in his pants to get something done to
really help save our country!

Dave Berg
Berg suggested Rush Limbaugh, for instance, who
drew heavy criticism from his colleagues. He pointed
out to them that while a lot of people dislike the radio host, Limbaugh’s 20 million listeners prove that
many others feel the opposite.
“Usually when I would suggest these sorts of firebrand political commentators it would always be the
same thing,” Berg described. “People didn’t like the
idea and then – sometimes it would take years to get
my colleagues on the same page as me – they became
signature guests that other shows weren’t having.”
From Vice-President Bob Dole forward, Berg booked
virtually every presidential candidate there was. That
includes the first sitting president to appear on a late
night talk show: Barack Obama.
Other late night talk show hosts followed Leno’s lead,
thanks to the new direction inspired by Berg.
“I’d like to say that’s something I brought to the table
for late night,” said the former producer. “It worked
for Jay, it played into his wheelhouse. He like topical guests and his monologue was very political. No
question about it – his viewpoint was to not show his
political leanings, but to invite both Democrats and
Republicans.”
Aside from the change to welcoming serious newsmakers, Leno’s show never gave up on the sometimes
low-hanging fruit of gossip. In a bit of irony, newsman Berg attributes the most pivotal point in the success of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” to one
very “Hollywood” moment. It was Jay’s interview
with Hugh Grant after he was arrested for lewd conduct with a prostitute in 1995. David Letterman’s late
night show was number one until that night, when
Leno catapulted to the top, where he remained for
19 years.
When you finish that chapter, called “The Dangerous
Art of Booking Guests,” Berg underscores the best
features of his book by following it up with a chapter
called “Guests.” There the author describes the night
Leno drew 22 million viewers – the highest in his 22
years on “The Tonight Show.” It was the 1993 show
following the last episode of “Cheers.” The “Tonight
Show” was a wrap party featuring a drunken cast in
chaos, which Berg calls a “train wreck.”
Dave Berg’s lifestyle is worlds apart from Leno’s
“Camelot,” which involved long hours of work
which were fun, but rigorous. Now his schedule is
flexible – writing from home and showing up for interviews. He writes a column for the Orange County
Register and is a regular guest on radio talk shows,
including “The Drive Home” with John Phillips and
Jillian Barberie on AM 790 KABC.
“I sort of know the pulse of politics and the culture
and I like talking about those things,” Berg said. “I
frequently get calls from newspapers and radio shows
to get my take. I’m known as the Hollywood conservative. I’m also kind of known as the late night guy.”
Dave and Mary Berg are 30-year residents of Santa
Clarita and are actively involved in church and the
community. Mary is a substitute teacher in both the
Saugus Union School District and Sulphur Springs
School District. They reared their two children in
the SCV: Melissa, who has been a music teacher at
Legacy Christian Academy, and is now working for
an accounting firm; and David, who is married, and
is an accountant living in Portland.
Perhaps the biggest departure is Dave Berg’s shift to a
career centered on communicating his political, and
sometimes religious, views after two decades of following Leno’s lead that dictated a professional privacy of personal opinion.
“While I was working on the show, nobody knew my
political views and none of them knew my religious
views, unless they asked me about religion,” said Berg.
“I was trying to respect my boss’ views. He himself
didn’t express his political views. To Jay, guests on the
show were like guests in your home, at a dinner party.
You want to make them as comfortable as possible.”
Dave Berg wrote the book in an effort to pay tribute
to the impact of the show and to create an entertaining read, since it is, after all, about the entertainment
industry. He also wanted to “kind of set the record
straight as to who was the real ‘king of late night,’”
he said.
Does the Camelot crasher believe the new breed of
late night shows is “modernized” for the next generation?
“I can say the transition from Letterman and Leno
to the contemporary shows with Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert and the others is successful,” Berg said.
“They are relating to today’s millenials, such as using
social media in a very effective way.”

he two men who were killed in a crash that sent lemons across State
Route 126 on Tuesday morning have been identified.
Samuel Choi, 21, of Santa Clarita, and Roger Miranda, 58, of San Bernardino, suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead on scene following the crash.
Preliminary reports indicate that Choi was traveling southbound in a 2012
Toyota Corolla on Chiquito Canyon Road, then entered the westbound SR126, directly into the path of a big rig.
The driver of the big rig “took evasive action by swerving his vehicle to the
left, but was unable to avoid colliding” with Choi in the westbound no. 1
lane of SR-126 at Chiquito Canyon Road, according to a news release issued by the CHP.
Upon impact, the big rig crossed into the eastbound lanes, directly into the
path of Miranda, driving a vehicle carrying lemons. Both vehicles collided
head on in the eastbound lanes of SR-126, causing Miranda’s vehicle to
overturn and “spill its load of lemons across the entire road,’ according to
the CHP.
Choi and Miranda were pronounced deceased on scene by Los Angeles
County Fire Department personnel.
The driver of the big rig was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital
with moderate injuries.
Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor at this time; however, the
collision remains under investigation.
partnership between the William S. Hart School District and Henry
Mayo Newhall Hospital will bring a certified athletic trainer to each of
the six high schools in the district. An agreement was signed by Roger Seaver,
president of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, and Vicki Engbrecht, superintendent of the Hart School District.
The athletic trainers, who will be at Canyon, Golden Valley, Hart, Saugus,
Valencia and West Ranch high schools, will be tasked with providing initial
medical attention should an injury occur to an athlete and monitor state
mandated protocols of rehabilitation before the athlete is cleared to return to
play. The athletic trainers will report directly to doctors and medical personnel with the hospital.
“The safety and health of Hart District students is our number one priority,”
Engbrecht said. “And so we do everything we can to create a safe environment for our student athletes.”
Approximately 5,000 student athletes compete in 17 sports within the Hart
School District. By nature of competing in sports, every single one of them is
at risk of being injured.
“We can’t thank Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital enough for providing us an
opportunity to fill a need that we probably would not have been able to do
on our own,” Engbrecht added. “Having a Certified Athletic Trainer at each
of our six comprehensive high schools will not only help to ensure the health
and safety of our student athletes, but ensure their recovery and return is following proper protocols.”
The crash caused all eastbound and westbound lanes of SR-126 to be closed
for multiple hours. All lanes were reopened at 6:29 p.m. Tuesday.

Majestic Homes
By Martha Michael
M
oney-saving housing options are a welcome sight, especially when
they are local and easily accessible. That is what the Butterfield family has been providing Santa Clarita residents for decades.
Majestic Homes offers mobile homes, prefabricated homes and manufactured homes of all shapes and sizes. The company, which is located in the
Boot Barn Plaza in Canyon Country, represents numerous manufacturers,
including Palm Harbor manufactured homes, Hallmark two-story duplexes
and Cavco Industries, Inc., which builds homes for placement in planned
communities, on private land or mobile home parks. The company also has
a Cabin Series, which are often built as second homes.
Customization is possible, and Majestic Homes has been responsible for
constructing a 3,420-square-foot single-story house in Sylmar after the
2008 “Sayre Fire.”
There are different options of placement as well, says Pat Butterfield, who
has worked in the business since1994. You can put them in a community
home park or private property in rural areas or residential neighborhoods. Majestic offers modular homes that are uniform to the community
standards, built to local codes. “We are building manufactured houses to
modular condominiums,” says Pat Butterfield.
Majestic Homes is a dealer franchised with factories. The manufacturer is
your builder of choice and the placement of the home is an option, with
lots of factory floor plans.
Some of the Butterfields’ customers need commercial buildings and complexes, but mostly the local business deals in residential housing.
“For people looking for a home in Santa Clarita, it’s less cost, as far as
overall expense,” Butterfield says. “With some, you’re leasing land, with
others there’s rent control. And with some you pay for the land and you
purchase a mortgage for the home.”
Some ballpark figures Butterfield estimated were $800-$900 per month on
rent, depending on your location, with a mortgage of $70-$150,000 for a
new home today. He points out that you can buy a new home from Majestic in a park setting for approximately $1,800-$2,200 a month.
“In a mobile home park, there are no shared walls and you have direct
access to your car – in a carport or garage,” he says. “They’re typically
located conveniently. They were the areas that started first; they were some
of the first communities here.”
Pat grew up in Santa Clarita and he is still working for his father, Hank
Butterfield, who opened his manufactured housing business in 1967. They
opened the business with the name Majestic Homes in Canyon Country in
2001. In fact, they moved to locations in Acton and Rosemond, but a few
years ago returned to the same shopping center and reopened the office.
They’re open seven days a week. You can contact Majestic Homes by visiting Mobilehomeslosangeles.com.

Reduction in Juvenile
Drug Arrests Reported
by Sheriff’s Station
A
ccording to the Santa Clarita Sheriff ’s Station, juvenile
drug arrests have dropped 52.9 percent between 2012 and
2015. Numbers went from 155 arrests four years ago to 73 in
the last year.
One of the factors could be the City’s Drug Free Youth in Town
program, which began in 2012.
“DFYIT was started as an effort to ensure the health of our
local youth and educate them on the dangers associated with
drug-related activities,” said Mayor Bob Kellar. “Seeing such
a sharp drop off in juvenile drug arrests since the program
started is a very encouraging statistic as we continue to reach
out to junior high and high schoolers in Santa Clarita.”
Despite the city’s population increase from approximately
179,000 in 2012 to approximately 185,000 in 2015, statistics
showed a consistent drop, with 124 arrests in 2013, 91 in 2014
and 73 in 2015.
DFYIT is a free, school-based, voluntary, anti-drug club for
junior high school and high school teens. The clubs are run
by kids, for kids, allowing teens to thrive in a drug-free setting
with like-minded peers. The city launched the program along
with the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department, Los
Angeles County Fifth Supervisorial District and the William
S. Hart High School District in 2012 with the goal of providing
a positive peer network for Santa Clarita teens that supports
healthy choices and a drug-free lifestyle.
Since its launch, DFYIT has started clubs in 15 schools in
Santa Clarita Valley and has 2,680 students enrolled. DYFIT
students are involved in community service projects, attend
educational workshops and summits, enjoy social events
with friends and participate in random drug tests to proudly
proclaim their drug-free status.
“The DFYIT program is slowly changing the culture on
junior high and high school campuses by celebrating youth
who choose to live a drug free life,” said Ken Striplin, city
manager.
For additional details on the DFYIT program, contact Janine
Prado, human services administrator for the city’s Community
Services Division, at (661) 250-3716 or visit dfyitscv.com.
Wilk Bill to Raise School
ADA Reimbursement Rates
S
chool Districts with high attendance will get additional
funding if Assembly Bill 2587
passes the California State Assembly. Introduced last week by
Assemblyman Scott Wilk (RSanta Clarita), the bill would
allow a school district that
reached an Average Daily Attendance (ADA) of 94 percent
or higher to collect reimbursement at the 100 percent level.
Under current law the state
distributes funding to school
districts based on their Average
Daily Attendance, which is calculated by the total days of student attendance divided by the
total days of instruction.
“ADA is a method to entice
school districts to combat
chronic truancy, and rightly
so,” said Wilk. “However,
many students often come
to school while infected with
contagious illnesses due to
pressures from the school. Sick
kids don’t learn and should stay
home. Also, schools have fixed
costs that should be covered
by the state as long as they
are school districts that are
effectively addressing truancy
issues by obtaining at least a 94
percent ADA rate.”

Pavley/Wilk Aliso Canyon Bill
Clears Committee
A
bi-partisan bill from Assemblyman
Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita) and Fran
Pavley (D-Agoura Hills) passed the Assembly Utilities and Commerce committee
Monday.
In response to the Aliso Canyon gas
storage facility leak, the bill requires an
immediate moratorium on natural gas
injection and a restriction on production of
gas through vintage wells at the site. The
measure passed 13-0 with two abstentions.
“It’s imperative this moratorium legislation
go into effect so that any new injections
of natural gas and use of vintage wells for
production at the Aliso Canyon storage
facility are deemed safe and do not pose a
risk to public health,” said Wilk. “As the
15,000 residents who were forced to be
evacuated from their homes begin moving
back, it’s important they return to a safe
home. I commend Senator Pavley for her
hard work on this issue and remain committed to working together to prevent a
future incident from occurring again.”
SB 380 will establish a moratorium on any
new injections of natural gas and use of
vintage wells for production at the Aliso
Canyon storage facility. The length of
the moratorium will be determined after
selected state agencies and outside experts
declare that the wells at the site do not pose
a risk to public health or safety. The measure will also consider how to minimize
or eliminate use of the facility while still
maintaining energy reliability in the region.
“Now that the leak has finally been sealed,
there can be no haste to return to business
as usual,” said Sen. Fran Pavley. “Residents
are preparing to return home and they’re
asking me, ‘Is it safe? How I do know it
won’t happen again?’ This is a measured
bill and a valid response to the real concerns of real people.”
SB 380 will now be heard in the Assembly
Appropriations committee. This measure
has an urgency clause and will take effect
immediately with the governor’s signature.
The 38th Assembly District encompasses Simi
Valley, the northwestern section of the San
Fernando Valley and most of the Santa Clarita
Valley.
Blue Lights Coming to an
Intersection Near You
S
even major intersections will have new
blue light enforcers installed, serving
as red light violation detectors for sheriff ’s
deputies. The locations were chosen due to
their high incidents of red light violations.
The blue light allows deputies to observe the
status of a red light from across the street.
The light illuminates when a traffic signal
changes to red, so an officer can safely
and easily monitor and address motorists
running the red light without having to
pursue a vehicle through an intersection.
The blue lights are not red light cameras.
A total of 15 blue lights have been installed
at the following intersections: Bouquet
Canyon Road and Newhall Ranch Road;
McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard;
McBean Parkway and Magic Mountain
Parkway; McBean Parkway and Newhall
Ranch Road; Bouquet Canyon Road and
Seco Canyon Road; Soledad Canyon Road
and Whites Canyon Road; and Lyons
Avenue and Orchard Village Road.
The City of Santa Clarita is installing these
traffic engineering tools as part of its focus
this year to improve traffic safety. City
leaders also plan to work with the Santa
Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Department on
more enforcement and increasing education
and outreach to encourage safer driving.
“We’re embarking on increased traffic

AN “OOPS!” MOMENT

West’s 2♥ was a so-called Weak Two, typically showing around 6-10 points
and six cards in the bid suit. After that, N-S stumbled into 6♠ which turned
out to be a great contract. At least it was until Declarer botched the play.

West led the ♥K and North tabled a rather yummy Dummy. “Perfect!” said
Declarer. He ruffed the Heart on the board, drew two rounds of trumps
and then, when East showed out on the second round, he said to himself
“Oops!“ or “Oh, rats!” or something like that. What had just gone wrong?
Declarer still had a Heart loser in his hand, so he could not draw the last
trump and knock out the ♦A … in that case the defense would cash a Heart.
Nor could Declarer ruff the Heart loser in Dummy … in that case he would
be unable to get back to hand to draw the last trump and, one way or
another, West would score his ♠J. Down one. Oops, indeed!
Declarer would have made his contract if he had postponed his celebration
of Dummy’s yumminess and instead asked himself “What can possibly go
wrong?” The answer is a 3-1 trump break and having realized that he would
draw just one round of trumps. Then he would ruff the remaining Heart
loser on the board and still have a trump in Dummy with which to return
to hand, before drawing West’s last trump, and setting up the Diamonds.

Leaving Your Pet in a Hot Car
If you’ve been sweating it out this week and wondering why, the National
Weather Service has forecast abnormally high temperatures throughout Southern California. The heat wave is due to a high-pressure area over the entire
region, and was expected to result in temperatures as much as 15 degrees above
average. It’s supposed to go down a bit over the weekend, but still remain abnormally high.
For folks who are sick and tired of winter’s less-than-desirable temperatures,
heat waves like this can be a blessing. When caught off guard, though, an unexpected heat wave can have disastrous effects – particularly for those who travel
with animals in their car. Hey, we understand; pets are companions, and some
like to bring their pals with them when they run their errands. Unfortunately,
pets aren’t going to receive the same welcome as humans in most places (especially restaurants), prompting many to simply leave their pets in the car while
they run inside. After all, you’ll “only be gone a few minutes,” right?
The harsh reality is that a car can heat up extraordinarily fast when it’s hot
outside. Sometimes “a few minutes” is all it takes for an animal to overheat.
Dogs don’t sweat, and must regulate their body temperature by panting – an
adaptation that only goes so far. After all, humans do sweat and are still highly
susceptible to heat-related conditions. Cracking the windows can help, but like
panting, it can only help so much.
As a result, California Penal Code 597.7 PC makes it illegal to leave an animal in an unattended vehicle under conditions that may threaten the animal’s
health or wellbeing. The conditions include the temperature (too hot or too

cold), inadequate ventilation, no food or water, or other
circumstances that could reasonably be expected to cause
undue suffering, pain or death to the animal. Under 597.7 PC, police officers
are empowered to do whatever they can to ensure the safety of any animal they
encounter left unattended in a car. This provision means that the officers are
entirely within their rights if they try to open your door, or if that proves ineffective, smashing the window.
Speaking of smashing windows, it’s not uncommon for a private citizen to do
that very thing when a police officer can’t be found. Circumstances like these
usually arise when it’s a child in an unattended car, and not an animal. However, there have been instances in which a private citizen has smashed their way
into a stranger’s automobile to retrieve an obviously suffering pet.
First convictions under 597.7 PC are relatively minor, and include a $100 fine
per animal left unattended in a car – that is, as long as the animal was unharmed. If the animal was harmed, the defendant faces up to six months in
county jail and a fine of up to $500. Subsequent convictions all face six months
in county jail and a $500 fine, regardless of whether or not the animal was
harmed. Suffice it to say, it’s better to just leave your pets at home or in the good
care of others before taking this type of chance.

Celebrity Waiter Dinner
On Local Social Calendar
F
or anyone unable to attend Saturday’s Celebrity Waiter Dinner in
person, there is proxy and online bidding for silent auction items.
The live auction portion of the evening will be streaming live and provide
prospective buyers the ability to view the event over the Internet. It will be
open to anyone with access to the Internet using a computer, smartphone
or tablet, so prospective buyers will be able to register and place bids in
real time. A link will be provided to gain access to the auction on the
following websites: http://myscvcoa.org, http://www.scvcelebritywaiter.
com or http://www.auctioneerguy.org. A detailed description of all of the
auction items also will be posted at the site.
Approximately 300 community leaders and supporters of the SCV
Senior Center are expected to gather in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt
Regency Valencia on Saturday, Feb. 27 for the annual event, which
benefits the SCV Senior Center. It features elaborately decorated tables
and guest costumes in line with their table’s game choice to match the
overall event theme, “A Night of Fun and Games.” This year’s presenting
sponsor is Comfort Keepers In-Home Care.
Bill Lively once again will serve as master of ceremonies, supported
by co-chairs Vanessa Wilk and Brian Koegle. At presstime, only two
table sponsorships were available before the dinner reaches a “sold-out”
capacity of 30 tables.
In keeping with this year’s theme, the auctioneer, Curt Waite, is working
on a surprise game that will give all guests a chance to win a valuable
prize. Dancing to a live band, live entertainment and waiter antics are all
part of the evening. More than 35 “waiters” have signed up to compete for
the Stanley Award, which goes to the waiter who garners the most dollars
in scrip “tips” during the evening. Several waiters already have started
pre-event fund-raising activities to boost their chances of being named the
evening’s Favorite Waiter.
The table sponsorships still available range from $1,500 to $10,000, each
seating 10 guests. Individual seats can be reserved for $150 each, which
includes $50 in scrip, which can be used to “tip” the waiter. Sponsors can
provide their own “celebrity” waiter or request the committee to provide a
waiter.
Table sponsors select their own table theme, based on the overall event
theme. So far, table sponsors have selected the games of golf, hunting,
Monopoly, Clue, Operation, football, dodge ball, baseball, Mario Cart,
Las Vegas/gaming, Amazing Race, Poker Dogs, Twister, Rodeo Clowns,
Super Bowl and Dating Game. The table décor matches the theme, and
most guests dress in costumes to complement their table’s theme, making
Celebrity Waiter “one of the most fun events in town,” according to
Koegle.
Online visitors can see photos of past events and comments on Facebook
at https://www.facebook.com/scvcelebritywaiter/?fref=ts. Guests and
table sponsors can make purchases online and obtain further information
at www.scvcelebritywaiter.com. Reservation forms are available online,
with return instructions at the bottom. In addition, there is now an
online payment button for individual ticket sales and table sponsorships.
Last minute individual tickets or table sponsorships can be purchased at
http://myscvcoa.org/events/celebrity-waiter-event/ on an as-available
basis.

Bidding.

• For years, the CHP headquarters was on Newhall Avenue, next to Green Thumb Nursery.
They announced they would be moving to

• Big Posey Reeves’ café was torched in Val

A.L. Long, to investigate. Long made headlines by catching California’s most notorious
arsonist, “Louis the Glow Worm.”
• The SCV joined a national craze on this date
in 1920. We started painting something called
“street addresses” on houses and businesses.
• In 1900, the average life expectancy in
Newhall, Saugus, Castaic and the rest of
America was 47.
• In 1907, Newhall’s Al Playman vowed never

Approximately one year, he is good
with other dogs of all sizes and kids,
not sure about cats. Due to the
unfortunate bad rap and misuse of
bully breeds, previous bully breed
experience is required to adopt
Nestle. We are patient in finding the
right homes for our beloved dogs and
serious about protecting the breed,
Nestle will not be adopted to a first
time bully breed owner.
Leo - 1 - 1.5 yr old male terrier, can be a bit shy
until he gets to know you but once he knows
he's safe he's a big affectionate baby! He's a
typical Terrier; friendly with other friendly dogs
but can be fiesty, tenacious, energetic, stubborn
and bossy at times but very smart, loving and
loyal. Because of his shy tendencies a loud
busy home would not be ideal. A home with an
experienced handler and/or someone with
knowledge of behavior modification is going to
be idea for him.
Nestle is neutered, current on
vaccinations and mircochiped.
He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations,
microchipped and crate trained.

Piper is a Terrier mix,
approx. one year, 35
lbs. She's a typical
fiesty Terrier but gets
along well with other
friendly social friendly
dogs and adores
people.
