As a woman, I always have the initial moment of trepidation, hoping that if someone stops to help it is someone with good intentions. The wonderful thing about pulling a horse trailer is that we are blessed with a support group outside our family and close friends, one which is tied together by the common thread of our love horses. Almost every time I’ve had a flat when I’ve been pulling a trailer, a fellow horseman has stopped to lend a hand. It is one of those random acts of kindness that most horse people (myself included) try to pay forward. The barrel racing industry is filled with good people who are passionate about helping others. I recently stumbled onto a program that I think deserves our attention. While hosting the BBR OK-TX Regional in Alvarado, TX a young lady travelled all the way from Athens, TN to compete in the American Qualifier sidepot. I didn’t know it at the time, but this young woman turned out to be one of the REALLY good people. Her name is Christina Dusendang and she is the founder of Running to Bring Our Children Home, or RBCH, though I prefer the actual name over the acronym as the words carry far more weight about a topic that is every parent’s worst nightmare. Running to Bring Our Children Home is a pending nonprofit organization based in the US, that combines Christina’s passion about this tragedy with her vision to unite the world of rodeo committees, barrel racers and others within the equine industry, with law enforcement, families and the professionals who serve them on issues related to missing and sexually exploited 8 children. It is her mission to bring awareness to more people, teach safety to our youth, and bring lost children home. As competitors hauling from one event to the next, we travel a lot of miles. We see things most people don’t see. And we have the opportunity to be on the lookout for things that seem out of the ordinary for some reason. RBCH intends to put all this travelling to good use. Christina credits her mother, Crystal Dusendang, as being her primary reason for getting involved in this endeavor. “My Mom is very passionate about this topic. Seeing her fears for me when I’m on the road, or hearing the worry in her voice when she can’t reach me for 2 hours when I’m travelling and out of cell range,” explained Christina. “She taught me at a very young age what to look out for and how to keep myself safe.” She laughed when she shared the following tips, but the brevity of message was not lost. “ My Mom has always told me, ‘ALWAYS park under a light. Never park between semis at a truck stop. Never park next to a van.’ I always carry my keys in my hand with the key sticking out between my fingers.” Christina says the formation of RBCH is something she and those close to her have been thinking on and working toward doing for the past of couple of years. “Thanks to Milynda Raedel, who is part of the RBCH team, we are launching the program this year in 2014. My Mom, Crystal Dusendang and Gigi Rock are also helping make this happen. Gigi is our marketing agent and she is helping us get the information out to everyone,” stated Christina. RBCH is a nonprofit organization in the U.S. working BBR News - February 2014 with rodeo producers, members, and others within the equine industry and along with law enforcement, families, and the professionals who serve them on issues related to missing and sexually exploited children. RBCH hopes to be able to bring awareness to more people, teach safety to our youth, and help get these children home! The RBCH mission is to divide the United States into Regions using the rodeo circuit map. Teams of riders will be formed within each. RBCH staff will work with The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to gain information on victims all across the country. This information will distributed to the teams out in the field hauling to events, who will in turn not only be on the look-out as they travel from event to event, they will work with rodeo committees and barrel racer producer to create awareness and teach safety tips to the youth riders in the industry. Team members will also work with local law enforcement agencies and local hospitals in their efforts to find lost children and deliver their child safety message. Christina, who is 26, shared her insight on having rodeo athletes deliver the message, “I know as a kid when a parent tells us something we kind of view them telling us because it’s their job to tell us, but we don’t always listen until we get older. When someone else tells a kid the same thing they will pay more attention. Especially if that person is someone they look up to.” RBCH is organizing a stallion service auction to assist with the building a benefit barrel race to raise the funding needed to create and print team rider packets and the RBCH flyers that team members will be distributing. The rider packets will include information on how they can help, while the flyers will include safety tips and contact information for the help hotlines which riders will distribute to the public. Stallion owners will be able to participate in the program by paying $250 fee or donate a breeding for auction. Proceeds from the auction will used to create an incentive fund that will pay money back to contestants who enter the RBCH Benefit Barrel Race. Christina explained the RBCH game plan as follows, “It is our goal to have a team of riders in every region across the United States and then be able to appoint a director in each region. Once directors are appointed it will be up to them to manage their region and produce at least one benefit per year in their region, This will allow us to work on a more grassroots level with local families and law enforcement who are looking for missing children. She also wants to use the benefit races to do more than just raise money, “It is important that the benefit events provide RBCH the opportunity to bring awareness to this cause. They need to be fun so that kids will want to participate.” She feels that if young people want to participate then they will also want to learn and hopefully hear the message. As of January 6, 2014, Running To Bring Our Children Home has received 210 applicants from individuals wishing to sign on as RBCH team riders. Applicants include law enforcement officers, private investigators working in this field, a criminologist graduate, as well as adults who were abducted and found. Anyone interested in making a tax deductible donation can do so via the RBCH web site www. RunningToBringOurChildrenHome.com. For more information about RBCH or how to become a team rider or sponsor please call Milynda Raedel at RR Ranch (608) 432-3707 or email her at [email protected]. www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 9 10 BBR News - February 2014 www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 11 12 BBR News - February 2014 BBR Introduces Select Stallion Stakes in 2014 T here are lots of stallion incentive programs and stallion service auctions out there to choose from. One might say the market is fairly well saturated. And, some might further scoff at the idea of organizing such a program on January 1st and launching that program on January 10th, at the beginning of the competition year, and right before breeding season, with a limited amount of lead time prior to the identified incentive events. The one thing the BBR founders have never shied away from is a challenge, especially when they believe in a concept and have the ability to deliver on implementation. We went back to the original plans used for organizing the association: • Offer options that are unique to this association. • Over-deliver where other association don’t. • Payback to a broader range of contestants than any other association can. And whaa-laaa you have the BBR Select Stallion Stakes! The BBR Select Stallion Stakes is an invitational program that requires the stallions who participate to possess at least one of the following criteria: 1) be either a proven runner and/or performer, 2) be sired by a Leading Sire and out of a proven producer with at least one proven half-sibling, or 3) be a proven sire of race and/or performance progeny. BBR’s definition of “proven” requires an official performance record with AQHA, APHA or Equi-Stat, with earnings on the track and/or in the performance arena. BBR is already a national association with over 9,000 members that sanctions upwards of 1,500 barrel races per year. BBR produces the largest and richest divisional barrel race in the US. BBR has a series of Regional Challenge Tour Finals in 5 different regions and is growing by leaps and bounds. BBR is launching a Futurity Riders division in 2014 to better serve its members who are competing in futurities across the US. And BBR is the sanctioning body for the RFD-TV’s The American Rodeo. These options create a unique opportunity for BBR to put incentive money in futurity, jackpot and rodeo competition through its broad range of alliances. Plans are to apportion purses to different facets of the industry with 30% to Futurity, 30% to Jackpot and 30% to rodeo incentives. BBR understands marketing and promotion in regard to how it applies to barrel racing and the breeding industry, possibly better than any other incentive program manager. From our perspective, most other programs do a great job of collecting enrollment fees and paying out incentive checks, but fall short when it comes to promoting the stallions who participate and thereby making the stallion enrollment fee worth the investment to the stallion owner. BBR possesses the skill and the manpower to create the advertising, plus the method to deliver the message. But maybe most importantly we also have the audience to receive the information. These are options that are either not available or are not being fully utilized by other programs at this time. Our team of professionals is backed by years of experience in compiling stats, writing ad copy and pedigrees, and designing advertising. BBR’s monthly digital publication is currently being received by close to 10,000 active email addresses across the United States. BBR will create a Select Stallion Stakes online registry that will reside in digital magazine format on the BBR News Website. The online registry will be emailed out each month during breeding season in an email media blitz to our email address list. BBR is also reaching over 36,000 active friends through social media on its Facebook page where each post is viewed by an average of 10,000 friends and reaching upward of 50,000 viewers per week. BBR will create a Select Stallion Stakes album that will reside on the Better Barrel Races Facebook page where Friends can access it readily and share it with their own Facebook page. These options allow BBR to promote the participating stallions to a broad spectrum of contestants, potential progeny buyers and mare owners who are potential breeders. We also understand that the stallion owner and the horse owner are generally the people who have a monetary investment in any incentive program and as such we understand that they should be rewarded accordingly, thus a 60%-40% split with 60% going to progeny owner purses and 40% going to stallion owner purses. Stallion owners will be receiving invitations to participate sometime around January 15th. A list of participating stallions will be available on the BBR web site www. betterbarrelraces.com and the Select Stallion Stakes online Stallion Registry will be up and being added to on February 1st at the BBR News web site www.betterbarrelnews.com. The Better Barrel Races Facebook Select Stallion Stakes photo album will also be set up and ready by February 1st. Barrel racers can check any of those sites to see if their horses are sired by participating stallions, if so, get them enrolled in the program to be eligible for incentive purses at the American Rodeo Semi-Finals & Rodeo and the BBR World Finals! www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 13 Straight from the Secretary - Ross Wright FOR BOTH & OLD New Here we are already in February. Old man winter is definitely not giving us a break and seems to think that we all want to spend some time inside. WRONG! However, if we are going to have to be indoors, I wanted to take a minute to remind our members – or educate some of our new members, of what to be expecting prior to the finals and at the finals. Entry forms will be mailed out the 2nd week of February and also posted on the BBR website. They are also included in this edition of the BBR News. There are 2 forms, but only one will apply to you, depending on your qualifier status. If you attended at least 8 shows as a Standard member, or 6 as a Gold Card member, you can enter the BBR World Finals that adds $50,000 to the Open 5D. For those that did not meet those requirements, you can enter the New Member/Non Qualifier Race that will be held in Barn 8 that has $2000 added. Let me give you some details. For the World Finals, there are 2 long go races that will be run in 2 barns (the Coliseum and Barn 6). Each long go race will be run over the course of 3 days. The top 30 in each division of each long go race will qualify for the short round on Sunday, which means there will be 300 making the short round. This kind of gets confusing for those that are new, and takes a minute for our “veterans” to remember how it works. There is not a payout each day, just one large pay out on Saturday for each long go race. Also this year, back by popular demand, are the rider age-based side pots. This is a carry over time from your runs in the long go races. Age groups are as follows: Juniors (15 & Under), Adult (1649), and Senior (50 & Over). These side pots will also be paid out on a 5D ½ second split. They are optional, not required, an just provide an additional way to win money. They will be paid out in only the 2 long go races. Sunday’s short go is always exciting to watch. Contestants are run slowest qualifying time to fastest. Back 14 numbers will be provided to the qualifiers with the slowest qualifier receiving back numbers 300 and the fastest qualifier receiving back number 1, which means short go qualifiers will run in reverse order 300 to 1. That leaves the fastest 50 for the very end – creating a section of competition you will definitely want to watch. Also on Sunday in Barn 6, we offer the Insurance race with $2,500 added. If you enter the insurance race and do NOT make the Short go, you are “insured” to get a 3rd run (we think of it as a World Finals consolation race of sorts). However, if you do make the short go, your entry fee is forfeited and it becomes added money for those that did not make the short go. Either way – you get to run on Sunday. You must enter the Insurance race before you make your first run in either of the long go races of the BBR finals (you can enter it on your entry form). This race has a $35 entry fee. The books will stay open on this race until Thursday at 7pm for those in the draw who will make their first run on Friday. Now, if you did not make the World Finals, the New Member/Non Qualifier is for you. It is also 1 race over 3 days, but the difference is you can enter the same horse/ rider combination 2 times!!! That gives you 2 runs as well. You can enter until 1pm, on Thursday of the World Finals (with a late fee after 3/15). It will count as a show towards making the BBR World Finals in 2015!!! Barn 8 will also be the competition arena for the Gold Card and Youth races again this year. However, unlike in 2013, they are each their own race. The Gold Card Race, Youth race (12 & Under), and the NMNQ will run on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Members who choose to enter the Gold Card Race must be Gold Card members. A perk of being a Gold Card member and entering is the Gold Card race awards saddles to the race winners in each D! Now for some clarification (I know some of you are a little confused). If you qualify for the World Finals and BBR News - February 2014 enter, but are also a Gold Card member or 12 & Under, how do you run in the other classes? Simple, we are going to draw you up on the day that you are not running in the World Finals. However, there are not any carryovers if you are a youth with a Gold Card. You will have to run 2 times. Also if you are Gold Card Member you can enter just the Gold Card race and nothing more if you so desire. Likewise members who meet the age requirement of the Youth race can enter just the Youth race if that is all they want to run in. Keep in mind that if you are qualified for the BBR World Finals, running in the NMNQ is not an option, just like a non-qualified member is not allowed to enter the World Finals $50,000 Added race. There is a place for everyone. For Futurity entries, there is no qualification, the rider just has to be a current BBR member to participate. So, as the entry forms come out, and you look down and are confused or question what you should enter, please re-read the above paragraphs to see if I answered your questions. If I did, great, but if not, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail the office so that we can get your entry filled out correctly. The Finals this year will be nothing less that GREAT!!! And we want to see everyone there!!! God Bless, Ross www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 15 BBR FUTURITY STANDINGS & FUTURITY RIDERS GUILD RULES Purpose: To create a more fair and balanced points program that enables all BBR divisional jackpot members who aren’t competing in Futurity races with lots of points a better chance to be the High Point rider in their Regional division jackpot standings. In doing so, it is BBR’s goal to also recognize our members who are Futurity Trainers for their outstanding achievements, and providing them with a good reason for being members which includes the opportunity to accumulate points from futurity competition toward a year end awards program with their peers. Sanctioning & Listing: BBR Sanctioned futurity events (4 and 5 Years Old Events) Horses meeting the specified age requirement by the producer (entries open to horses which have not competed for money, points or prizes before Dec 1 prior to their Futurity season). • FUTURITY and Added Money detailed with listing. • $15 per futurity round sanctioning fee to be paid by producer • Minimum $1,000 Added in Futurity (separate class or sidepot) • Futurities that are a separate class will be sanctioned • Futurities which allow Roll Over to Open Jackpot will be sanctioned • Futurities which are a sidepot of an Open Jackpot will be sanctioned • Mileage radius will be based on added money in the futurity alone • Sanctioned Futurities will be identified as FUTURITY and listed with other shows by date on the BBR Web Site Memberships: Members who purchased a standard membership in 2013 may compete in futurity competition and accumulate points toward the Futurity Riders Standings on their current membership card until such time as it expires. Once the current membership expires, a member will need to purchase either a Futurity Riders Guild membership or a Gold Plus membership to continue earning points toward the Futurity standings from any 2014 BBR sanctioned Futurity they compete at. Likewise, NEW MEMBERS wishing to participate in the Futurity division will need 16 to purchase either a Futurity Riders Guild membership or a Gold Card Membership. Both the Futurity Riders Guild membership and the Gold Card membership allows these riders to accumulate points in both Futurity Riders standings the Regional Jackpots standings. This is benefit to members who enter an Open Jackpot that offers a Futrurity Sidepot, or when they opt to roll futurity times (where offered by producer) to the Open Jackpots, as well as when they are competing only in jackpot competition. On the membership form you will notice a couple of questions. Basically we are gathering information toward future use for the purpose of classifying riders for awards purposes. This information will help us determine whether riders are Professional Trainers, Non-Pros, or Amateurs. How this information will be used to grow the futurity riders division will depend greatly on the number of Futurity Riders Guild memberships BBR receives. Either of the below listed memberships will allow members to accumulate points from Futurity competiton toward Futurity Rider standings, as well as points from Jackpot competition toward the Regional Hi-Point Year End standings. • $100 Futurity Riders Guild Members (Includes World Finals Express Check In) • $200 Gold Card Membership (All inclusive with all VIP Perks) Season End Points & Awards: A top 10 futurity point standings will be tracked on a per rider basis. By tracking points on a per rider basis in the Futurity division allows BBR to sanction both 4 and 5 year old events. Points will be accumulated in this division in the same manner as is used in the jackpot division with the points available being based on added money. This set of points will be one National Standings rather than Regional, and will be figured on a straight payout and not by D’s. Points will be capped at $10,000 added in order level the playing field on all big added money races. If a rider is competing on more than one horse in a race, points will be awarded for the highest placing run, all other runs will receive the standard 5 points for participation. A minimum of Top 10 awards will be given. What the awards are will be determined based on number of Futurity Riders Guild Memberships and Division sponsorships received. The BBR has grown from its original 1,800 members in 2003 to its approximately 8,000 members today. Better Barrel Races now sanctions more than 1,500 independently produced events in five designated regions across the United States. Over the past ten years the BBR has awarded more than $4 million in cash and prizes, making it the largest and richest divisional barrel race in the world. QUALIFIERS There will be 5 qualifiers nationwide. We will be taking the top ten finishers from each qualifier to the SemiFinals at Mesquite the week prior to THE AMERICAN. Following are some key points that sum up the qualifiers: $500 entry fee. May enter as many of the 5 qualifiers as you want. May enter each qualifier 2 times. Each qualifier is one run (per entry). Of the $500 entry fee, 25% is paid at that event, 25% will be carried over to the Semi-Finals, and 50% will be carried over to THE AMERICAN. SEMI-FINALS The Semi-Finals will be held one week prior to THE AMERICAN at Mesquite Arena. This event will consist of 50 contestants from the qualifiers, the BBR World Champion and the possible Exemption Match or Exemption contestant. These individuals have already paid their $500 entry fee at the qualifiers, so there is no entry fee. Not including the possible Exemption contestants, 51 contestants will run one slack run, and then the top 20 finishers from that round will be split into two performances. One performance will be Saturday at 7 PM and the second will be Sunday at 2 PM. After those 20 individuals run in the performances, along with the possible Exemption Match or Exemption contestant, the top 10 times and the possible Exemption Match winner, or Exemption contestant, will solidify their spot in THE AMERICAN. The pay-out at the Semi-Finals will come from the other 25% of the $500 entry fee that the contestants paid at the qualifiers. There will be no round money paid, only average money. 22 EXEMPTIONS Every event has the right up to 2 exemptions that can be made by THE AMERICAN committee. If two contestants are selected there will be an exemption match between the two at the Semi-Finals in Mesquite. The winner of this match wins an automatic bid into THE AMERICAN, making the field 16 teams. If one contestant is selected they have the opportunity to compete at Mesquite and THE AMERICAN. The BBR 2013 World Champion will receive an invitation directly to the Semi-Finals, but if he or she competes in the qualifiers, their invitation is revoked. This contestant must finish in the top 5 at the Semi-Finals to move on to THE AMERICAN. Exemption contestants must pay the $500 entry fee. THE AMERICAN THE AMERICAN will consist of the top 10 barrel racers in the world (WPRA after the WNFR) free of entry fees, as well as, the 10 contestants that qualified through the Qualifiers and Semi-Finals, and the Exemption Match winner (making a field of 21). THE AMERICAN will be two runs. All 21 competitors will have one run, with the top 4, after that run, moving on to a shootout round that will determine the champion and reserve champion (one run determination, not average on 2). The champion will win $100,000 and the reserve champion will win $25,000. In the case that the champion came from the “not” top-10, they will place themselves in a pot for the chance to win $1,000,000. The rich barrel racing purses being offered at 3 BBR Sanctioned races, all of which were run consecutively at the South Buckeye Equestrian Center in Buckeye, AZ, made Buckeye the destination hot spot. The BBR Arizona tour started out with the BRN4D $25,000 Added Classic Equine Futurity/5D, followed by the BRN4D $25,000 Added Greg Olson Futurity/5D the very next weekend, and culminated the 3rd weekend with PacWest’s $17,500 Added Futurity/5D. PacWest’s Saturday competition featured the 5th and final qualification race for RFDTV’s The American Rodeo. The idea that individuals seeking the American through the qualifier process are amateurs is a giant misnomer in the industry. One last chance to earn one of only 10 remaining spots to compete at the American Semi-Finals in Mesquite, TX February 21-23 drew 98 entries that included several 2013 Champion barrel racers. Professional barrel horse trainer/youth coach and NBHA World Champion Talmadge Green drove 1,700 miles from Georgia to bring his team members Max and Allie Chouest, and make a bid himself for a 2nd qualification spot. BFA Derby Champion and New Arena Record setter Erin Ricotti came to play, as did AQHA Reserve World Champion Pete Oen and Jud Little Futurity Champion Kelly Conrado. It brought former NFR finalists Angie Meadors from Oklahoma, Lisa Ogden and Danyelle Campbell-Bassett from Texas. World Champion Brittany Pozzi and Fallon Taylor, who both failed to earn a direct entry to the American Rodeo by missing the top 10 cut from the Wrangler National Finals in December, were on hand, just to name a few. American competition in Buckeye was run as a 26 sidepot of the Saturday 5D race with qualification hopefuls scattered throughout the draw, a factor that caused the the anticipation to build as the day stretched out. Jordan Bassett was the only rollover from the Futurity. Bassett made her bid aboard Cocomo Jo, a son of Dash Ta Fame, with a clean, quick 17.160, that on any other day would have been considered a smoking run on a standard pattern. Such was not the case on January 18th, Bassett would end up 17th overall by 10pm that night. The combo would feel the pain of the phrase “a day late and a dollar short” on Sunday when they came back to clock 16.770, the fastest time of the entire 3 week series. Hot And Frosted (Hot Colours – Miss Jay Frost, Tiger Frost) and rider Tami Semas were 5th in the draw and one of the teams to watch based on times clocked at the previous races. The 10 year old gelding laid down a run that had everyone sucking in their breath when the duo rocked the 3rd barrel and came out wide on the way home. Semas never quit riding and her horse kept getting gears all the way up into the holding pen. That energy paid off, when the flickering red lights on the display came to a stop on 16.808. The bar had been set by which all others would be measured. And as luck would have it the time held first throughout the remainder of the race. Semas, who hails from Oregon, came into the qualification race on the heels of a 3-year rehab for her horse Hot N Frosted. The talented gelding sustained a potentially career ending injury during his derby season. “I was told he wouldn’t ever run again,” stated Semas. “After my run I was just, after the journey we have been on to get where we are today, I am pretty excited.” Semas hasn’t been to a rodeo in 9 years. She has children and over the last several years has stayed close BBR News - February 2014 to home, training futurity horses and raising her family. Once it became apparent that Hot N Frosted’s recovery was complete and he was sound, Semas jumped into rodeo mode and qualified for the 2013 Columbia River Circuit Finals. Several were predicting a 17.1 or 17.2 on a standard pattern would be good enough to make the cut for the top 10. A theory which might would ordinarily hold water. However, when close to 100 of the best horses in the country show up to run on excellent ground conditions, it goes from being an observation based on experience, to nothing more than wishful thinking. The 17.2’s didn’t get a sniff. And 17.1’s fell like flies as the 17 .0’s and 16.9’s kept coming. Fallon Taylor gave the crowd a fist pump early into the competition when she and AQHA Horse of the Year Baby Flow stopped the clock 17.062. When the race ended at 10pm that night, Taylor was sitting in 11th place. The competition would see Brittany Pozzi tip on her mare and miss the bar on her gelding. Talmage Green would suffer a similar set of circumstances, tipping on one horse and failing to clock fast enough on the other. Callie DuPerier came mounted for bear with former NFR Arena Record Setter Rare Dillon (Firecracker Fire – Rare Class, Rare Jet) in her arsenal. DuPerier and Dillon had spectators running to watch when their turn came around. They did not disappoint. The pair rocketed through the pattern in typical Dillon fashion, making 2-strided turns and taking a little paint off the tops of all 3 barrels, to stop the clock for the 2nd fastest time of the day, 16.923. Californian Erin Ricotti rounded out the top 3 aboard her OKC Derby Champion ride, Royal Star Commander (AR Star – Go Royal Scarlett, Royal Go Go) with a 16.941. The seven year old gelding is owned by Jim & Ruth Haislip and is out of Ruth’s NFR mount. Ricotti has been riding the gelding for a short while but they are certainly a nick. The big strided sorrel dominated the straighaways and attacked the turns showing he and his jockey possessed both outstanding talent and nerves of steel. Only 3 other sub-17 second runs were turned in. Among them were 4th place qualifier Danyelle Bassett on Repeate Fame (16.947), 5th place Kathy Grimes on KG Justiceweexpected (16.74) and Canadian Cowgirl Nina Smith on Cloud Grey (16.984) placed 6th. Angie Meadors nailed down 7th on Powdergirls Shakem (17.011), 8th place went to Katie Garthwaite, who calls Canada homes these days, on FC Guys Prime Time (17.033). Danyelle Bassett claimed 2 of the 10 positions placing 9th on her 2nd horse Famous Dungarees (17.044). 67-years-young Orla Mae Harvey and Extras Honor finished out the field of the top 10, a perfect example of the ‘Long Live Cowgirls’ anthem! Danyelle Bassett joins Shali Lord, Kelly Yates, Kendal Owen and Christine Laughlin as riders who will get to run two horses at the Mesquite, TX Semi-Finals. These 10 will join the other 40 from the previous qualifying races and head to Mesquite, TX February 21-23. All 50 qualifiers will compete February 21st at 8am in a slack round. The 20 fastest riders in slack, minus any of the double qualifiers, will be split into two groups of 10, with 10 competing in a 7pm performance on Saturday night and the other 10 competing in a 2pm performance on Sunday. The fastest 10 times from the 2 performances will move forward to compete at RFDTV’s The American Rodeo in AT&T Cowboy Stadium on March 2. www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 27 28 BBR News - February 2014 www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 29 BBR World Finals Presents $10,000 Added BBR Futurity Futurity Open to foals of 2009 or after (4 year olds & 5 year olds of 2014). BRN4D already produced the Greg Olson Futurity in Buckeye, AZ. His plan was to pair a new event and make January in Arizona THE destination for barrel racing. Clearly the plan has come together. Trainers, jockeys, and owners from as far away as Maryland and Canada joined the pilgrimage to the South Buckeye Equestrian Center, January 3-5, for the biggest pay-offs and record entries to date. Gammelgard noted, “I knew we wanted to do another futurity with the Greg Olson, but we needed instant credibility. We got that when Classic Equine committed to sponsor. Without them we could not do this, I can’t thank them enough”. He added, “I am excited that this year we also joined Better Barrel Races, a national barrel racing association that endorses independent producer’s shows for members to get qualified for their BBR World Finals”. The combination of BRN4D and BBR sanctioning made the Classic Equine Futurity and Open Jackpots the first of three weeks of BBR approved races held at the South Buckeye Equestrian Center. Gammelgard and BBR CEO Robin Hofmann made the alliance to support the many contestants who are BBR card carriers. “BBR is really excited to be able to work with BRN4D in Buckeye. We are kicking off a new futurity division in 2014, the Futurity Riders Guild, and this will be allow that division and the futurity trainers who are BBR members to get a jump start on the season point standings. I think any time associations can 38 work together through co-approval to benefit the contestants and give them something more for the miles they haul and the entry fees they pay it is a winwin situation,” Hofmann said. Arizona did not disappoint, including fabulous sixty degree weather during a record cold snap up north. Over 230 entries in the $15,000 added Futurity, a full slot race paying $45,000, $1,500 added Derby, over 700 composite entries and $11,000 added to the 5D Open jackpots, resulted in a payout of more than $160,000 into the hands of barrel racers. The Open 5D paid 10 places in each division for both weekend runs and gave average awards 10 deep in each D. Pete Oen, of Ardmore, OK wasted no time setting the bar on Friday, posting the futurity fast time of 17.132. Riding Gowin Ta Be Famous, by Dash Ta Fame and out of Brianna Choice by Braedons Choice (an Easy Jet and Merridoc bred mare), Oen’s time held to carry over and claim the $20,000 slot race victory as well as winning the first futurity go-round. The pair claimed third in the average. Oen was very happy with the late-started mare. He said, “I brought her because I thought she had a shot, but I was not convinced she was ready to win. I was impressed with her when she stepped up and beat that many great horses.” He added, “I am still running her in the big fat O-Ring snaffle we started her in, no ty-down or anything. This filly is a natural; she just knows how to do things that you have to teach the others”. Cayla Melby, of Burneyville, OK, 16 year-old daughter of NFR speedster Jane Melby, guided her mare Dash Ta Lil to an 8th place finish in the first round, and 4th BBR News - February 2014 Danyelle Bassett place in the second. She claimed the average, the Classic Equine Futurity title, and the Martin Saddlery trophy saddle by the slimmest of margins, just one hundredth of a second faster than Kelsey Lutjen. (See Greg Olson Futurity story for more on Lutjen). Cayla laughed, “People were telling me congratulations, and I was thinking ‘for what’? So mom said let’s go look”! The younger Melby is proudly credited by her mom for training her own horse, but Cayla humbly acknowledges the Melby Team effort. Cayla said, “My dad and brother helped train her too. I tell mom I made the horse for her, she is her style”. Dash Ta Lil is by Dash Ta Fame, out of Lil Bitty Pretty by Oak Tree Special. The home schooled high school sophomore described her mare, “She knows she’s pretty, thinks she’s great and has a sassy attitude!” Although new to futurities, Cayla Melby grew up around rodeo and is already a card holder in the CPRA. When Cayla asked how to prepare for futurity runs, her mom quipped, “Ride her like she’s a rodeo horse!” Only two runners broke the sub-17 second run threshold during the entire event. The first was Haley Wolfe, Aztec, NM on Mia Fabulous Fame (by Frenchmans Fabulous out of Reposada by Dash Ta Fame), with a 16.942 on Friday, earning the $1,500 added Derby win and Martin Saddlery trophy saddle, and topping the Friday Open Jackpot. The Sunday Jackpot got the exclamation mark, as Danyelle Bassett, newly of Bryan, TX, piloted Repete Fame (by Dash Ta Fame, out of Hitten Pay Dirt by Arbeka Jet One) through a scorching 16.877 trip for the Cayla Melby fastest time of the week, sealing the average and the trophy I-Pad. She laughed, “I really appreciate the I-Pad as I am probably the last person out there that does not have one yet!” The win was special for her as her beloved mare, a former NFR qualifier, was sidelined for a few years but is now coming back strong. She added, “I want to thank the BRN4D crew, they have a great event with wonderful ground and fun prizes. Barrel racers really appreciate it.” On a final note, Mike Gammelgard shared an extraordinary barrel racer story. A special event of the Classic Equine and Greg Olson Futurities this year was a Pay-Per-View Webcast Clinic, featuring Jolene Montgomery on January 8th. But Montgomery’s horse went down with her at the Classic Equine Futurity, severely breaking her ankle requiring surgery. Gammelgard assumed that the event would have to be postponed, but Montgomery checked out of the hospital in time to do the full clinic sitting in a chair with her foot on a pillow. Friends Pete Oen and Jordan Briggs did the riding to demonstrate for the clinic. Gammelgard noted that they will replay the webcast in the future, and added “How tough is that? We just love Jolene Montgomery!” Results on page 74 www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 39 40 BBR News - February 2014 www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 41 42 BBR News - January 2014 www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 43 15TH GREG OLSON FUTURITY by Sue Karges W in the Record Books hat do you do when you miss winning the Classic Equine Futurity by one hundredth of a second? For twenty year-old Kelsy Lutjen, the only answer was to double down and come back the next weekend with guns ablazin! The Reserve Championship left her so confident in her mare, KN Fabs Gift Of Fame (by Frenchmans Fabulous, out of Mistys Dash Of Fame by Murr The Blurr), that the Casa Grande, AZ native anteed up and paid the $2,000 to purchase an entry in the $45,000 slot race during the $15,000 added Greg Olson Futurity, January 10-12, 2014. Her decision paid off. With just eight competition runs to her credit, Lutjen’s rock star palomino mare lit the leader board with fireworks, clocking the only sub-17 second run in either futurity. In round one Lutjen cleared the alley with a 16.999; good enough to win the round, win the $20,000 slot race championship, run the Futurity Fast Time, and sealed her victory in the average by over two tenths of a second. Lutjen had a good reason for believing in her mare. She trained her, has won on her siblings, and knows her sire, Frenchmans Fabulous, quite well. Lutjen campaigned the palomino stallion, owned by Kenny Nichols, as her high school rodeo mount, winning the National High School Rodeo Finals Goat Tying title in 1012. The all-around hand also headed, ran barrels, and break-away roped on him, earning the National High School Rodeo Girl’s Reserve AQHA Horse of the year, and Arizona Girl’s AQHA Horse of the Year. She said, “Kenny Nichols and Dale Barron are co-owners of this mare. They have allowed me to ride great horses and I can’t thank them enough for making this all possible”. Running late in the first round, Lutjen knew a 17.0 was leading. She made the decision to trust her mare to respond to just a bit more pressure, adding light spurs before her run. She explained, “She had been running really solid, so I added the spurs, gave her just a little more arc to the first, and she turned it perfect. I concentrated on keeping her smooth, her forward motion never stopped, and she clocked.” Good enough 44 to best the field of over 240 runners and bring home serious cash; $11,462 for the Futurity and $20,000 for the slot race, as well as a cool scooter, a trophy rifle, and the King of Sires Award – a $3,500 Coats Trophy Saddle. Event coordinator Mike Gammelgard, of Barrel Racers National 4D, commented, “It was great to see Kelsey Lutjen win this, she is a really hard working young lady, and did this herself on one horse”. Gammelgard and BRN4D are in their sixth year of hosting the event, and 2014 was the best turn out yet. He said, “We made kind of a bold move, we actually bought the event from founder, Kris Eisenhut. He started it 15 years ago in honor of his friend, Greg Olson”. Gammelgard continued, “When we bought it, they had 72 runners. It is amazing how it has grown, and we are sure glad we did it”. Some numbers to indicate the phenomenal success of the venue in 2014 include: Over 240 entries in the Futurity with a total pay-out of $96,312; a full slot race paying out $45,000, almost 60 in the Derby paying out $6,777, and then the 5D jackpots. The Friday jackpot ran 253 with a total purse of $9,500; Saturday 508 runners entered and the purse was $31,833, and Sunday’s jackpot ran 370 for $24,633. When you add those up the Greg Olson Futurity and Jackpots paid out $214,055. The jackpots paid down 15 places in each D, and barrel racers were delighted with the prizes awarded 15 deep in each D for the average of the Saturday and Sunday runs. Gammelgard stated, “We plan to keep growing. The more money you add-the more players you get.” He added, “Classic Equine also sponsors this event, making it a perfect Double Crown with the Classic Equine Futurity here last week. We are also now co-sanctioned with Better Barrel Races.” BBR so-sanctioning with BRN4D means both the Classic Equine Futurity and the Greg Olson Futurity counted toward the newly formed BBR Futurity Riders Guild point standings. The open jackpot competition from both races also count toward the BBR Regional point standings. “There are so many BBR members BBR News - February 2014 Kelsy Lutjen on KN Fabs Gift Of Fame making the trip to Buckeye for the month of barrel races that it only made sense for the BRN4D and BBR to work together to the benefit of the contestants,” explained BBR CEO Robin Hofmann. Hofmann came in early for the Greg Olson race and stayed thru the following weekend for the Pac West race, which hosted the final qualifier for RFD-TV’s American Rodeo. Gammelgard is justifiably proud of the events. He said “We could not ask for a greater facility than the South Buckeye Equestrian Center, and I cannot thank our office staff enough. They are the best in the business.” The jackpot fast time of the week was a repeat from the previous weekend Classic Equine jackpot fast time; Repete Fame (by Dash Ta Fame, out of Hitten Pay Dirt by Arbeka Jet One) to be exact. Danyelle Bassett, Bryan, TX and her beloved mare ran the only 16.8 of both the Classic Equine and the Greg Olson events. Saving the best until last, Bassett set Sunday’s jackpot D’s with her wicked fast 16.857. Repete Fame, a former NFR qualifier for Bassett, is no stranger to fast times but has been sidelined for a couple of years with an injury. Bassett shared, “this mare is so special to me. I ran her mother; she was part of our family. She had a career ending injury and we bred her to Dash Ta Fame. ‘Repetey’ got her name because when she was foaled, she was an exact duplicate of her mother. We only got two foals from her mother. She is so special to me, and I am blessed to have her back and running.” Although only two runs at the Classic Equine event were under 17 seconds, the pace was faster at the Greg Olson. Altogether there were 11 runs faster than 17, all in the .9’s except for Basset. Nina Smith on Cloud Grey ran the second fastest time of the week with her second place finish in Sunday’s 1D, running 16.917. Kathy Grimes rounded out the top three fastest times winning the Derby and Friday’s jackpot on KG JusticeWeExpected with a 16.924. Thanks to the sponsorships of P& L Crushing, Mosley Farms, Creek Run Vet Clinic, Ridgeland Vet Clinic, Tatham Body Shop, Hart Farms, Rainbow Tack, Stoops Tack, and Ronnie Hester Photography there was plenty of money to be won at Southern Rose Ranch’s annual Run for the Roses Barrel Futurity and Open. Producers Mike and Janelle Green, along with the rest of Southern Rose Ranch, put together a $5,000 added futurity, $3,000 added open, and gave away $5,000 in Future Fortunes incentive money. The straight pay out format of the futurity drew some of the top futurity names in the business, which also made for a tough open race. The futurity was two runs and an average, while the open was two separate races over two separate days. Laying down the fastest time of the Run for the Roses Futurity was Leslie Willis, who is no stranger to the pay window. Willis had three formidable futurity horses entered but it was her 2010 brown gelding Gimme Da Money (Tres Seis - Da Money, Mr Eye Opener), who topped the overall fastest time of the futurity with a 14.235. “Gimme’s” run in the first go was good enough for Willis to pocket $1,120. “That run was fast, but we had a little mistake leaving the first barrel,” Leslie said, “I like him because if he doesn’t hit the first barrel leaving it.” Leslie won the first go and also placed 3rd on her home grown brown mare Me Me And Me (Deltas First Dash - Shesa Bye Bye Bug, One Rare Bug) who just had her first competition run the week before. “We will be 50 going to the East Coast Classic, LG Pro Classic, Diamonds and Dirt, and the Old Fort Days Futurity,” says Willis. Claiming the Run for the Roses Futurity average was Craig Brooks and a very consistent buckskin gelding named French N Tonic, a.k.a. Patron, who is owned by Linda Capozzoli and Michelle Lynn of Free Spirit Farm out of Ocala, Florida. Brooks’ time on two was good enough to win the average check of $1,494.00 by about three tenths—28.667. “Patron” as he is fondly called around the barn, was a model of consistency in North Augusta. The buckskin came in fourth place in the first go with a 14.321 and won a check for $640. Then, the gelding bested the field in the second go with a 14.346 to pick up another check for $1,120. It was a good weekend for Brooks, who only entered his first barrel race in September of 2001, and is steadily challenging his peers to show he is a force to be reckoned with in the tough Southeast futurity scene. Brooks knew the 2010 gelding by Crown Royal Frenchman out of the mare In Pursuit Of Passion (by Red Hot Pursuit) had a good shot to win it in the second go. “…he was 4th in the first go and typically gets faster his second trip. In the second go he ran really hard to the first barrel, so I thought I needed to touch him, but when I did he really set to turn and we almost didn’t get to it.” Brooks was a little worried the mistake would cost him on the clock, but the gelding just kept moving and made up plenty of time on his second and third barrels. Being a full time trainer Brooks has a barn full of horses but he says Patron has a big personality that stands out. “He is into everything! We wrap his legs at events at night but he usually decides when he wants BBR News - February 2014 Craig Brooks Kelsey Davis Laura Williams Jesse Hopper to take the wraps off.” With spring futurity season in full swing, Brooks is planning to run Patron at the LG Pro Classic, Unadilla Futurity, The Panty Raid Futurity, and the Old Fort Days Futurity. Brooks adds, “We will see how things are going for the fall futurities and the Oklahoma City BFA.” The Open 4D, held on Friday January 3 and Saturday Jan 4, was a good chance for some of the older, more seasoned horses to take a run at the $3,000 added purse. The 1D winner was no stranger to the winner’s circle. Talmadge Green posted the fastest time of the entire weekend over both the open and the futurity with a blistering 14.076 riding the Chouest’s family’s phenomenal 2003 model mare, Sixums Lady Luck, to top Saturday’s open race. Green pocketed $491.00 for the 1D win. The fast 2D time of the weekend went to Kelsey Davis and her mare Dashin Angie with a 14.606 and was good for $381.00 at Friday’s open race. “Besides the weekend before I had not ran Angie since September. It was one of those ‘not-so-perfect’ runs but we are starting to put everything back together,” Davis said. “Angie has a personality all her own,” Davis added, “she doesn’t care for a lot of affection.” Davis has her goals set on rodeo in 2014. She purchased her PCA card and plans on rodeoing with a few shows on the side. Winning the 3D was Laura Williams on her 2009 sorrel mare, Famous Martini. Williams’ Saturday run of 15.087 was merely one one-hundredth of a second ahead of second place in the 3D, and her run won her $245.00. Jesse Hopper’s last minute decision put $127.00 in his pocket when he won the 4D on Friday with a 16.127, on Sunshine. “I’d only had her three days prior to the Run for the Roses,” Jesse laughed, “and I didn’t know her registered name or if I was even going to run her. It was definitely a last minute decision to take her.” Hopper’s decision paid off, even if it’s not entirely what he hoped for. “I hadn’t really run her before and it was just one of those runs where you just kind of see what’s going to happen.” Results on page 74 www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 51 52 BBR News - February 2014 Sale Horse Gallery FLASHY JACK B 2009 Gelding Stoli x Special Effort Daughter Jackson is an outstanding futurity and derby prospect. Down South Productions put on the hugely successful event on December 27-29th at the Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center. Over $57,000 plus assorted prizes were given out over the weekend. Sponsors for the event included Wards, Mississippi Ag/John Deere, Gulf Coast Trailer Sales, Boot Country of Hattiesburg, and the Fairfield Inn of Hattiesburg. Cindy Carroll of Down South Productions had this to say about the barrel race, “The event ran very smoothly and everyone enjoyed it. We had a total of 1,671 entries and ran fifty horses an hour (because Down South has a great staff). This barrel race had a few extras added that made the weekend special. Carroll explains, “We had a lot of fun. During the race spectators played Wards Barrel Racing Bingo. We had a team barrel racing side pot where all riders had a handicap time. Saturday night, we cooked out in Barn C. Our friends David Bush and Kurt Necaise cooked some fantastic gumbo and jambalaya in two of the largest pots I have ever seen, and it was gone in an hour.” Saturday saw the fastest times of the weekend. Victoria Williams of Kiln, MS, ran the weekend’s fastest time of 14.349 on her grey mare, Three Jets. This run won her $1,044. She had this to say about running in Hattiesburg: “My mare seems to really like that pen, but I was surprised by her times that weekend.” Williams, who mainly uses Three Jets for professional rodeos, wanted to get some runs on the mare before the 2014 rodeo season starts. “We decided to give her a month off after Thanksgiving, 56 and at the last minute I decided to take her there and try to make a few runs.” Williams and Jets also won second in the 1D in the Friday race, and second in the 1D in the weekend average race, totaling her weekend winnings to over $1,500. When asked what draws her to the Hattiesburg facility and Down South Productions runs, she told us “We go to most of the Hattiesburg runs because we only live an hour away from the facility. Also, because Sarah and the rest of the Down South Productions crew always put on a good show and normally have a good turnout.” Victoria is a BBR member, and says that the BBR is “great as an association and they approve some really great events. I can’t wait to be able to attend their finals one day!” The winner of Saturday’s 2D was Susan Frith of Thomasville, AL, on her stocky gelding, Remedys Smart Pistol. Her weekend turned out to be a fantastic one, as she left on Sunday with over $1,500 in total winnings. However, money is not the only thing she left with. A breast collar from Faith N Candy’s booth joined her gain after winning a bet with her fiancée. “He said that if I could run a fourteen on both of my Saturday runs, he would go upstairs and buy me that breast collar,” she said. Pistol has a ducking problem and had not seen a barrel since July, so she was very happy about how her weekend went. When asked about the Hattiesburg facility and Down South Productions runs, she only had good things to say, “Hattiesburg is my favorite race, it’s like a family reunion there. It’s a clean atmosphere, great barrel race, and the payout is great. I have never missed one in eight years.” Susan is a BBR member, and she BBR News - February 2014 very much enjoys the association. She said that the BBR Finals “paid wonderfully” when she went to Oklahoma City in 2012. Tammy Dew of Meridian, MS, took the top of Saturday’s 3D. Her beautiful palomino stud horse, Dash for Fuel, clocked a time of 15.350. She received $596 for the run. Tammy had just started competing on Fuel earlier in the year, and was very impressed with the progress she made with him in 2013. “I’m so proud of my boy”, she said. Tammy is a BBR member, and has made plans to attend the 2014 BBR World Finals in Oklahoma City, OK. Anna Dixon of Thomasville, AL, won Saturday’s 4D with a time for 16.362. She cashed out with $447 on her gelding, Baby Trucks. “I just started riding Baby Trucks this year, and the Hattiesburg run was my first big barrel race where I ran him.” Her horse has been in the family for a long time. “He belonged to my older sister, Katherine, and she won a lot on him. He is an automatic barrel horse and I love riding him.” She was very impressed with her winning run on Saturday, since she has not been riding him for long. “He definitely knows what to do”, she says of Baby Trucks. When asked about the horse’s unusual name, she said, “When we got him, he already had the name ‘Baby Trucks’. We thought about changing his name, but after getting to know him, the name just suited him. He is as sweet as a baby, and is built like a truck!” Anna enjoys coming to the runs at Hattiesburg. “I love coming to Hattiesburg because I like the arena; it has good dirt and a nice warm up facility. I also like that everything is covered and you don’t get wet if it’s raining.” She is in agreement that Down South Productions always put on a quality event, and that people take notice. “My parents like to bring us to the New Years Run because it’s a great family atmosphere. Also, the payouts are always good!” Anna also competes in NBHA and the Alabama Open Horse Show Association. Down South Productions works hard to put on a quality show, and appreciate all who attend. Cindy Carroll states, “Most importantly, I want to thank all the barrel racers that attend Down South events. As always, Down South’s shows are fun, fair, and safe. We have been in business for over eleven years and hope to have many more.” Down South Productions holds five shows a year in Hattiesburg. Their next event, the Easter Fun Run, will be held on April 18th-19th in Hattiesburg. A flyer of the event can be found at www.downsouthpro.net. It’s better to settle on one good vet, saddle, horse and trainer, for instance, than to follow the latest trends. And, for competition, “less is also more” when it comes to preparing and keeping your futurity horse (or any horse) ready to run. Champion derby and futurity trainer Cody Hyde shared some of his “less is more” philosophy on preparing a futurity horse for peak performance, and on keeping them at a top level. PREPARATION Hyde keeps it simple. A common question for trainers is “How many runs do you make at home” or “how many runs do you make at the event to feel the ground”, for instance. Hyde rarely makes any. “A horse shouldn’t need that kind of last minute training,” he said. “I want a horse to be as confident as he can be, and trotting gives them more confidence than too many practice runs.” Consequently, he trots. A lot. He rides five days a week, and trots the pattern 15 to 20 times per session. And that’s pretty much it. Yes, he lopes a few circles, but “somewhere else, away from the pattern.” “I don’t do a lot of special exercises, or a lot of big circles in the arena,” he explained. “I trot my horses exactly where I want them to go on the pattern. I want the pattern to stay as simple as it can be, so they just know where I want them to run. My responsibility is to put the horse in position, 25 to 30 feet in front of that barrel, and to be in charge at that point,” he continued. “But when my leg or saddle gets to the barrel, I want to 66 be able to drop my hand and let the horse be in charge and turn,” he said. “I want him to let me help him get in the proper position, but then it’s his job to make the turn.” THREE TOOLS Hyde mentioned three basic tools he uses in pattern training. The face, or “the reins in your hands.” “People rely too much on this as a primary tool,” he said. “When you are constantly trying to pick up a shoulder, or move the face, a horse will get dull on you. I want to drop that hand and let him turn,” he said, adding that the reins are a tool, however, in helping position the horse. The inside foot. “I want to be able to move the front feet or the shoulder [over or up, away from the barrel] with my inside foot, not just the reins,” he explained. “If that inside shoulder is staying out, then the hip will come in.” The outside foot. “I got some good advice once to quit worrying so much about the shoulder out, and worry more about the hip in,” he said. “You can use your outside foot to push that hip in, so then the shoulder will be out. It was a big help to me to figure out I had an outside foot to move that hip in with.” BBR News - February 2014 MAINTENANCE On arrival at the facility, Hyde sticks to the plan. He may make an exhibition run the day before, but still keeps things low pressure, including the warm up. “If I’m there early, I may trot the pattern or coast through an exhibition run,” he explained. “I don’t spend a lot of time warming up, or in the pen either, because I think if you go in there too slow and give the horse a chance to see everything he can get scared. If I go in and coast through a run, before the event, it makes it more business like for the horse in my opinion,” he continued. “Before a run, I will just trot a few circles and go, because I think too much warm-up makes a horse nervous.” After an event, Hyde gives his horses time off (a week to 10 days) with some turnout in big runs or whatever he can provide; this, along with minimizing practice runs and “drilling” helps prevent burnout as well. As for the other major aspects to performance and maintenance—like feed, supplementation and hauling, Hyde doesn’t go overboard there either, but thinks many folks do. “It’s so overwhelming with all the products out there,” he said. “Sometimes, I think many of those can be an excuse for training, although I will say some of them have some benefits. I just prefer to rely on my training,” he said. Hyde sticks to feeding alfalfa hay, some whole oats (if necessary), and uses Platinum Performance as a supplement. Prior to leaving for a race, he has each horse checked by the chiropractor, or will do so if a horse feels “off” during training. As for hauling considerations, he puts good shavings in the trailer and stops “as frequently as possible.” And that’s about it. “I feel like this time of year, futurity horses are still learning and training and I just want them fit and feeling good,” Hyde said. “I just keep it simple.” CONSIDERATIONS It is worth noting that Hyde said not all horses are cut out to be futurity horses. He mentioned a filly that went from “0 to 1D” in nothing flat, but then fizzled. “She just couldn’t handle it, and it had really looked promising. She had come along so well. But ultimately, it just isn’t for some horses. It’s important to recognize that, like we did with this filly, and to not try to shove a horse into doing it. Instead, we found her a home where she didn’t have to keep that schedule and she’s doing great,” he continued. “Some just get physically and mentally tired, although sometimes you have to look at the training too,” he concluded. The opposite end of the spectrum is the horse that is just slow to mature and doesn’t graduate to the 1D in time to compete as a futurity horse. Lots of times those slower maturing horses grow up and turn into great open or rodeo horses later on in life. www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 67 68 BBR News - February 2014 www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 69 70 BBR News - February 2014 www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 71 72 BBR News - February 2014 www.BetterBarrelRaces.com 73 Feature Event Results Event Name: New Years Fun Run Producer: Down South Productions Location: Hattiesburg, MS Date: December 27 - 29, 2013 Added Money: $6,900 Total Purse: $36,704.69 Total Entries: 1358 Winners: 1D: Fri – Lindsey Trammell (Stiches Smoke N Fame)/ Sat – Victoria Williams (Jet)/ Sun – Lindsey Trammell (Stiches Smoke N Fame) 2D: Fri – McKinsy Harris (Indefeasible BJ)/Sat- Susan Frith (Remedy Smart Pistol)/Sun – Bailey White (Jose) 3D: Fri – Cheyenne Williamson (Boudreau)/Sat – Tammy Dew (Dash For Fuel)/Sun – Ashley Lee (Busters Holey Draco) 4D: Fri – Ricky Rimpf (LS Blue By You)/Sat – Anna Dixion (Baby Trucks)/Sun – Beth Ann Ball (Judge) Event Name: Run For The Roses Producer: Southern Rose Ranch Location: Pelzer, SC Date: Jan 3-4, 2014 Added Money: $3,000 Total Purse: $8,527 Total Entries: 201 Winners: 1D: Fri – Craig Brooks (Leaving Hot Memories)/Sat – Talmadge Green (Sixums Lady Luck) 2D: Fri – Kelsey Davis (Dashin Angie)/Sat – Mikayla Almond (Flousy Da Fame) 3D: Fri – Claudia Frye (Preacher)/Sat – Laura Williams (Famous Martini) 4D: Fri – Jesse Hopper (Sunshine)/Sat – Alisha DelleValle (Squirt) Event Name: Run For The Roses Futurity Producer: Southern Rose Ranch Location: Pelzer, SC Date: Jan 3-4, 2014 Added Money: $5,000 Total Purse: $10,664 Total Entries: 82 Winners: 1st Go – Leslie Willis (Gimme Da Money) 2nd Go – Craig Brooks (French N Tonic) 74 Event Name: Classic Equine Barrel Race Producer: BRN4D Location: Buckeye, AZ Date: Jan 3-5, 2014 Added Money: $12,500.00 Total Purse: $69,000.47 Total Entries: 1072 Winners: 1D: Fri – Haley Wolfe (Mia Fabulous Fame)/Sat – Rachel Primm(Dashin Julene)/Sun – Danyelle Bassett (Repete Fame) 2D: Fri – Lanette Pritchard (Firewaters Faith)/Sat – Shelby Rasmussen (Now Dats Really Smokin)/Sun – Danyelle Bassett (Famous Dungarees) 3D: Fri – Meghan Johnson (Positively Flshing)/Sat – Marcie Wilson (Deepest Purple)/Sun – Jeni Cerise (Frenchman E 2 Landing) 4D: Fri – Ashley Robertson (Penny)/Sat – Desatoya Coombs (Dancing On Firewater)/Sun – Lyndsey Pearce (Chics Dig Red) 5D: Fri – Susie Luschar (Carmeleo Gold)/Sat – Timmi Ward (She’ll Be The Juan)/Sun – Marjorie Scholl (Arnie) Derby: Haley Wolfe (Mia Fabulous Fame) Event Name: Classic Equine Futurity Producer: BRN4D Location: Buckeye, AZ Date: Jan 3-4, 2014 Added Money: $15,000.00 Total Purse: $60,850..00 Total Entries: 428 Winners: 1st go – Pete Oen (Gowin Ta Be Famous) 2nd Go – James Barnes (Gaga On Firewater) Event Name: Greg Olson Memorial Producer: BRN4D Location: Buckeye, AZ Date: Jan 10-12, 2014 Added Money: $12,500.00 Total Purse: $73,129.45 Total Entries: 1189 Winners: 1D: Kathy Grimes (KG Justice We Expected)/Sat – Sherry Cervi (MP Maydays Moonpatch)/Sun – Danyelle Bassett (Repeat Fame) BBR News - February 2014 Feature Event Results 2D: Kory Matthijetz (XS Sweet Escape)/Sat – Jackie Lynch (Jasper)/Sun – Shannon Clawson (Money Maker) 3D: Jill Atkinson (Maggie Runner)/Sat – Faith Holyan (Dash)/Sun – Jan Beeler (Styx) 4D: Whitney Cabral (Buckie Quatro Star)/Sat – Susan Price (Lady With Z Cash)/Sun – Pepe Lozada (Shooter) 5D: Benny Maddox (Top Doll Barrossab)/Sat – Dominique Hart (Harts Smokin Spitfire)/Sun – Mari Masters (Ices Classy Jewell JM) Derby: Kathy Grimes (KG Just We Expected) Event Name: Greg Olson Memorial Futurity Producer: BRN4D Location: Buckeye, AZ Date: Jan 10-11, 2014 Added Money: $15,000.00 Total Purse: $64,208.00 Total Entries: 446 Winners: 1st Go - Kelsey Lutjen (KN Fabs Gift Of Fame) 2nd Go – Troy Crumrine (Famous Kickin Jo) Event Name: 3Drum Classic Producer: 3 Drum Productions Location: Buckeye, AZ Date: Jan 17-19, 2014 Added Money: $6,100.00 Total Purse: $49,969 Total Entries: 1076 Winners: 1D: Fri – Talmadge Green (Briscos Can Get It )/Sat – Tami Semas (Hot N Frosted)/Sun – Jordan Bassett (Cocomo Jo) 2D: Fri – Kathy Grimes (KG Justice Wee Expected)/Sat – Pete Oen (Strait Dallas Fuel)/Sun – April Denny (Kinica Six) 3D: Fri – Kate Fike (Joe)/Sat – Ashley Schafer (Guys Girl Power)/Sun – Lacey Stanton (Lotsa Cocktail) 4D: Fri – Rick Manucy (Dusty)/Sat – Shelby Freed (ERU Famous Mr Blue)/Sun – Kimberly Gora (Double D Money) 5D: Fri – Shannon Witcher (Ill Be A Commander)/Sat – Kendra Draculis (Eye Like A Jewel)/Sun – Bobbi Brooks (Peppy Da Fame) Event Name: 3Drum Classic Futurity Producer: 3 Drum Productions Location: Buckeye, AZ Date: Jan 17-18, 2014 Added Money: $7,500.00 Total Purse: $23,506.00 Total Entries: 292 Winners: 1st Go – Troy Crumrine (Famous Kickin Joe) 2nd Go – Jordan Bassett (Cocomo Jo) Some Great FaceBook Barrel Horse Pages To Visit! Man was created in God’s image for great things. There are many benefits being a child of God. Those benefits help me see what God sees when He looks at me. When God was watching me in my life, before I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior, never did I feel Him come at me with a whip and chain to punish me. What I felt from God was a pulling of my heart. A sense of there is something better than what I have going on now. That was just the beginning. Today, as I continue to grow, learn, and be developed I realize more of who I am in Christ. I see myself as loved (John 3:16), forgiven (Psalm 103:3), righteous-sanctified-, redeemed (1 Cor. 1:30), justified (Romans 3:24). I see myself as a precious jewel that God holds as very valuable not as a piece of coal blackened and without purpose. I see God being patient with my learning curves and smiling on me because He knows my heart. Though I can do a big piece of stupid from time to time, He is always there to pick me up, dust me off and get me going again. God sees you as His precious jewel too. He sees you as His creation and knows your potential. He not only is interested in your life, He wants to become your Life. Only God can develop you into your best you, because apart from God you are not complete. There is always hope where God is concerned. He doesn’t treat you as the world treats you. His thoughts about you are far greater than what you think or don’t think for that matter. He knocks on your heart and waits for you to say “come in”. At that time a new birth and inward renewal takes place. God isn’t for taking away what you love in the aspect of your abilities and what gives you pleasure. What He does is takes the bad in your life and changes it around for your good. He gives you hope for everyday. He places a new value in you. He shows you the Truth. I see a seed in every person. That seed is designed to be watered and nurtured so it can grow. God’s desire is that no one perishes but that everyone comes to the saving grace of His Son and a personal relationship with Him. He is real and lives today. My prayer is that you see yourself as God sees you. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans of good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” EYES ON JESUS 102 BBR News - February 2014
