BIG CYPRESS FIRES
Recent lightning strikes have caused
several fires in the Mud Lake
Complex in Big Cypress National
Preserve. As
of May 18 the
fires
have
burned a total
of 17,355 acres
of
various
Preserve
habitats which primarily include:
dense, coarse grass; pine timber; and
cypress domes. Containment of the
fires is 9%. Access to lands managed
by Big Cypress National Preserve
south of Interstate 75 from MM59 to
MM75 (Turner River Road), south to
Upper Wagon Wheel Road is
temporarily restricted. The closure
also extends to lands administered by
Big Cypress National Preserve north
of I-75, from MM59 to MM70, north
to the Big Cypress Preserve
Boundary. These areas will be closed
to all recreational use including OffRoad Vehicles, hiking, and camping
to provide public and firefighter
safety in areas of high fire activity.
This area includes portions of the
Florida National Scenic Trail from
mile 12, traveling north to the
northern boundary of Big Cypress
National Preserve. For more
information, call (305) 972-6735 or

INDEPENDENCE
DAY EVENTS
-----------------------------------Patriotic Pets
Show how much your doggies
love America! A new event has
been added to the annual parade this year.
Trophies will be given for canine
companions who show their patriotism.
The two classes are divided by size: small
(under 26lbs) and large (26lbs or over).
So, dress up your pets with ribbons,
bows, scarves, or whatever your
imagination dreams up … and your pet
will enjoy. For more information, phone
Marya at 695-2905.
ART-IN-THEGLADES
Local arts & crafts vendors are
invited to join our Independence Day
Celebration on Saturday, June 27, in
McLeod Park from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00
p.m. where they'll get a good view of the
Parade as well as meeting people who
come to enjoy our family-fun festivities.
There is no charge; just bring a table
and chairs. If you would like to take part,
phone Marya at 695-2905.
FIREWORKS!
You'll notice collection boxes
in local retail outlets for
donations to the Fireworks
Fund so that we can have our spectacular
display when we celebrate Independence
Day on June 27.
The business with the highest
collection will win a trophy. Last year it
was Right Choice Supermarket. So,
support your favorite store or restaurant
with all your change (and notes).
If you want to send a check and receive
a receipt, mail it to "Everglades Fireworks
Fund", P.O. Box 110, Everglades City,

Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Community,
Just 1½ weeks of school left! Our seniors
are finishing up with exams and looking
forward to walking across the stage to receive
their diplomas on May 29 at 7:00 p.m. in our
school cafeteria.
This has been an outstanding senior class! Every senior has
plans of continuing their education. This will certainly increase
their opportunities for employment in the future. We wish them
all the very best as they close this chapter in their lives and open
another one. Congratulations Houston Brown – Trevyr Daniels Nic Jones - Dylan Lucas - Savannah Oglesby - Dalton Patt Ana Roldan! Our underclassmen will end this year on June 3. We
are hoping everyone has a safe, restful and relaxing summer.
I would like to mention the names of all of our noninstructional staff at this time. The jobs they do for our children
every day is both needed and appreciated. Thank you from all of
us: Candi Hendrickson, Leigh Richardson, Casey Henry, Angela
Nicholson, Mandy O’Connell, Dale Patt, Carmen Grimaldo,
Lorraine Burgess, John Gilmore, Elvira Pablo-Ramirez, Vincenta
Pablo-Ramirez, Liz Deleon, Jimmy Brewer, Robin Smallwood,
and Debbie Hooks.
A very special thanks goes out at this time of year to our
Guidance Counselor Glenna Potter. Glenna has worked day and
night for the awards banquet and for making sure our scholarships
are all in place! As a parent said to me, “Glenna is Ms.
Everglades”! We could not survive without her!
As always, Bob Spano, Principal
CONGRATULATIONS
Sierra Dungan graduated from 2015 Class of Youth Leadership
Collier, sponsored by Leadership Collier Fdn in coordination with
the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce. Sierra had to
complete a week-long intensive program with team-building
activities and topics that included local government, healthcare,
business, and the arts. This is the first year that an Everglades City
student has participated in Youth Leadership Collier.

April 25 was my senior prom and the best out
of them all! It was held at Hammock Bay Golf
and Country Club and the theme was “Down
by the River in the Full Moonlight” (from the
song Fishin’ in the Dark). The decorations
accented the country life with mason jars,
bales of hay, and a barbeque buffet. Since it
was my last prom, we decided to rent a limo to travel in style.
When my date arrived, he greeted me with a “Hey beautiful!”
and gave me a long hug. On the outside I was calm and
composed; on the inside I had a million butterflies fluttering in my
stomach as I anticipated the night ahead. The limo was filled with
laughter as we played “Heads Up.”
When we arrived, the sunlight beat down on us. Glitter and
diamonds from the girls’ dresses reflected on the brick floor as
their dresses floated in the air. Walking up the stairs to the venue,
I was greeted by my girlfriends complimenting me on my dress.
There was a “Selfie Station” and tables along with a dance floor
with a DJ playing country music.
The afternoon slowly turned into night as the dance floor filled
with people. I was hot from dancing so my date and I ventured
into the indoor room to cool off. We both plopped into the same
seat, super tired as he put his arm around me. One of my friends
said “Savannah, your hair is falling down.” I replied “I know and
too bad it’s unfixable!” My date turned to me and said “I’m sure
it’s fixable! Here turn around; let me try.” I turned as he began
rolling my curl and bobby-pinning it back into my up-do; slowly,
my hair was put back into place. I thanked him as we proceeded
back to the dance floor.
After prom was over, I walked over to our table to grab my
heels when my date beats me to them, kneels down, and slips
them onto my feet. I can say that I had the best prom date ever!
Sadly, even the best and most magical nights have to end!
This past Mother’s Day my sister Lashaun was blessed with a
beautiful baby girl! What a great Mother’s Day present; am I
right? My parents and I rushed her to
the hospital at around 12 midnight
and at 10 am she was born. We left
and came back home to sleep for a
little bit and when I woke up I
received a phone call from my sister.
After months and months of
everyone pondering what her name
was going to be, my sister finally
told me; she named her Addysen
Savannah after me. Tears ran down
my face as I said “Really?” over the phone to her and she replied
while also crying a little “Yeah”. This baby has only been with us
for 4 days now but she’s had such an impact on our lives, and I
am obsessed with my little Addy Savannah! So I would like to
congratulate my beautiful sister on her little bundle of joy!
Loving life!

Recipe for Good Eating
“Easy Vegetarian Chili” submitted by Patty Huff
“1892 Expedition”
by Chester Keene
During the night the temperature
continued to fall reaching 40 degrees at
3:00 A.M. and 38 at sunrise. The wind
still heavy from the NW. Broke camp at
6:40 A.M. and marched nearly a S.E.
course 10 miles. Pitching our tents on the
site of old Ft. Shackleford at 10:30 A.M.
Camp No.5: From noon yesterday
until today the soil was apparently
under-laid with the rock mentioned in
the record of the 18th. Four of the party
left the teams after starting this morning
on a hunting trip, going some two miles
or more to the southwest and following a
course parallel to the line of our march.
They reached camp about an hour after
the wagons arrived. They brought in one
snipe and the head and skin of a large
wildcat. They found an Indian Camp one
mile N.W. of present camp occupied by a
squaw, whom the Mr. Hendry's called
Nancy, and three grandchildren of about
2,4,6 years, 2 or 3 dogs and a lot of
chickens. She graciously received the
party and gave them such information as
possible to understand, her stock of
English being apparently quite limited.
The children were noticeable for their
dignity and reserve, much more than
with Anglo-Saxons their age. The little
girl of 6 was rather light colored and had
regular features. She was ornate with a
neckless of various colored beads. The
children were fat and healthy.

¼ tsp black pepper
1 28-oz can fire-roasted diced tomatoes (with liquid)
1 can black beans, rinsed
1 can kidney beans, rinsed
1 medium sweet potato, peeled and cut into pieces
Toppings: sour cream, sliced scallions, sliced radishes, and tortilla chips

NATIONAL CLEAN AIR MONTH
HIGHLIGHTS FLORIDA'S
TOP AIR QUALITY
Florida proudly boasts 171 state parks and trails, 35 state forests
and hundreds of city and county parks that provide an abundance
of outdoor recreational opportunities. Breathing clean air is a
critical component to enjoying the wonders these places provide
Floridians and visitors. Emissions of key industrial pollutants
contributing to the formation of ozone and fine particulate matter
continue to decline in Florida, a trend that has existed for years.
For example, since 2010 power plant emissions of two of these
pollutants, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, have decreased 37
percent. "Clean Air Month is a time to celebrate Florida's air
quality," said Justin Green, director of the Division of Air
Resource Management." According to the most recent "State of
the Air" report from the American Lung Association, Florida
experienced zero unhealthy days from ozone pollution during the
three-year study period. In addition, Florida boasts 28 of the
cleanest cities nationwide. Enjoy Florida’s many outdoor
activities while breathing air that's among the country's cleanest.

of the general gun season.
A quota is the maximum number of hunters allowed on a
particular WMA. The FWC’s Quota Hunt Program prevents
overcrowding on such areas and provides quality hunts. Quotas
also help control game harvests. The FWC sets quotas based on
an area’s size, habitat, game populations and regulations. There
are several types of quota permits, and most are issued by random
drawing. This year there’s been a change – the Phase I application
period for these fall quota hunts is now through June 15.
You may apply for each of the hunt types, and there is no fee
to do so. However, unless exempt, you must have an up-to-date
management area permit (or a license that includes one) when
applying for a quota permit or the system won’t accept your
application.
FWC has its own hunting channel on YouTube. Go to
YouTube.com/HuntFloridaTV and subscribe to get hunting tips
and hear about upcoming regulation or quota application changes.
Bear Management
FWC staff is currently drafting a policy on the need for
comprehensive bear management plan to reduce human-bear
conflicts. The report should be ready for Commission review and
final action at its June meeting. For the presentation outlining
these amendments, go to http://myfwc.com/media/3013519/11BRevisions-Bear-Rules.pdf. For more details on the proposed
bear
hunting
rules,
view
the
presentation
at
http://myfwc.com/media/3013407/11a-rules-limited-bearhunting.pdf. Before the final discussion at the June Commission
meeting, people can provide comments regarding these and other
bear-related topics at MyFWC.com/Bear. This link will also
provide information about Florida black bears and how to avoid
conflicts with them. Please report any threatening bear behavior to
the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

The walking stick is one of the most fascinating insects found on
the islands. The extensive list of nick names for this unusual
insect, including musk mare, clearly indicate the uniqueness of
this long, skinny bug. The first thing to point out about the twostriped walking stick is to keep your distance. As a defensive
mechanism, this insect is capable of squirting a strong-smelling
and caustic spray that is painfully irritating to the eyes and
mucous membranes. They can spray up to one foot with accuracy.
Victims have reported that the pain is so excruciating that it is as
though someone has poured hot, molten lead into your eye and a
person’s vision can be impaired for a week or longer. Flushing of
the eye immediately after being sprayed is recommended.
Another bizarre aspect of this stick bug is the fact that the
male two-striped walking stick spends almost the entirety of its
adult life riding on the back of the female. The male is roughly
one third the size of the female and generally is positioned near
the rear of the female where he spends most of his adult life.
Forcefully separating the male from the female will sometimes
result in death. Stick bugs are similar to millipedes in that they are
detritivores as well as herbivores. They feed on both living and
decaying plant life. They use their chemical spray to deter wouldbe predators such as birds, rats, snakes and lizards.
Some rodents have learned to keep their distance and wait
until the large female has sprayed five or six times, leaving her
reservoir depleted, then pounce upon her to dine. Stick bugs are
closely related to the family of insects known as praying mantises
and many species are parthenogenetic (capable of a-sexual
reproduction).
