Why it pays to partner with us
In this latest edition of Synseal Times, we are delighted to welcome K2… the newest member of the Synseal Extrusions Limited Group! The trading brands of
Celsius Glass and K2 Roofs are well respected and successful, and the addition of these brands improves the range of choices available to our fabricator customers.
We’re committed to helping our fabricator customers grow their businesses and one way we can do this is to constantly develop new products for you to offer,
alongside the windows and conservatories you manufacture, meaning your installer customers don’t have to shop around for alternative suppliers. Earlier this year
we launched Global Glass and the addition of K2 means that we are now able to be highly efficient in the production of both roof and window glass, in turn helping
our fabricators to compete more effectively.
During 2012 we’ve introduced a series of new products; the Evolve range which now
includes patio doors, vertical sliders and bi-fold doors, and our new orangery roof system
Global Summer which hit the market earlier this year, and won immediate praise from
fabricators, installers, and the press alike. Our new triple glazing bead was also introduced this
year to give homeowners even more choice when selecting their thermally efficient windows.
Delving into the world of online sales and marketing uncovers the myriad of opportunities
available to businesses. In 2012 we’ve built and hosted 40 new websites for customers
with many more to follow, introduced a ‘print on demand’ retail sales literature service
and are working hard to redesign our trade and homeowner websites which will generate
homeowner leads for our fabricators!
In this edition of Synseal Times we’ve concentrated on things we can do to help your business: • Global Summer - our new and exciting development helps enliven the
conservatory market
Finally, I am delighted to report that Synseal
have achieved its environmental goal of
Zero Waste to Landfill. Our aim was to
ensure that all operational (production
and manufacturing) and canteen waste
generated was diverted from landfill. In
recognition of the company’s achievements
we have been awarded a Green Apple Award
and regional runner up in the EFF Future
Manufacturing Awards.
Business is certainly tough, but Synseal are
continuing to develop and introduce new
ways to support you, so let’s work together
and win those sales!
• Global Glass and high performance Celsius glass - our ‘one-stop-shop’
for your glazing requirements

Synseal invests in K2 site to bring
arches and curves to its customers
Synseal’s K2 production facility received a substantial investment within
days of it becoming a part of Synseal Extrusions Limited, confirming
intentions for continued growth.
Shortly after the acquisition of K2, Synseal’s Chief Executive David Leng announced the
creation of a profile bending facility within K2’s Blackburn manufacturing site to enable
the production of arched top and other curved window styles. This will speed up the
production of Synseal arched top vertical sliders and will bend profile for fabricators of
both Synseal and other profiles. The new facility will also produce ‘starburst’ style gable
ends for Synseal and K2 customers and will supply them with the glass to suit, reducing
complexity, cost, and lead times for customers.
The installation includes the latest machinery and equipment to enable fabrication of
these time consuming and complicated pieces. The intention is to enable the company’s
customers to improve their lead times by ordering roof, gable and glass all at the same time.
“This is a natural progression for Synseal,” explained David Leng.
“It continues our strategy of offering a wider choice of products from
within the Synseal group thus ensuring consistent quality throughout,
reducing both prices and the number of suppliers, and simplifying the
supply chain for our customers. We want to take responsibility for the
entire roof and make it easy for our customers to sell a great product on
a short lead time, removing all worries about getting several suppliers
to coordinate sizes, deliveries, and prices. It takes advantage of the
excellent facilities we have at K2 and confirms our intention to maintain
and develop the K2 and Celsius brands, as well as the other related
assets we acquired recently,” added David.
This is a natural progression for Synseal, it continues
our strategy of offering a wider choice of products.
Synseal brand refresh
We all now live in a brand conscious era, where everything is badged and
labelled. We are loyal to brands that can help us, websites that we trust
to look after our data securely and shops where we can get what we need.
The Synseal brand has been around for a number of years and the trust and brand
awareness it has amassed is invaluable. With that in mind, we have re-designed our
logos to present a fresh and contemporary image with just subtle changes to maintain
customer recognition.
Look out for the new ‘quality assured product design’ logo, giving your customers the
peace of mind that they are backed by a market leading systems house.
We hope you like the new logos and you will start to see the new improved branding rolled out over the next few months.

Zero waste to
landfill achieved!
FIT Show...
We’re going!
As part of its ISO 14001 certification, Synseal developed measurable
environmental objectives. One major objective, with the focus of reducing
the company’s overall environmental impact, was Zero Waste to Landfill.
This was an ambitious environmental objective for a high volume PVC-U
extrusion company, due to the very nature of wastes that are produced
on-site. The purpose of the objective was to ensure that all operational
(production and manufacturing) and canteen waste generated was
diverted away from landfill.
Synseal is one of the first companies to back an initiative to create a brand new
showcase for the UK window, door and conservatory industry. Called The FIT
Show - for Fabricator Installer Trade - and hosted at the Telford International
Centre, it’s the first national event for the trade to take place for several years,
despite the industry being valued annually at more than £3.7 billion.
Synseal’s Head of Marketing Mark Schlotel says that an industry
as vibrant and dynamic as the glazing market needs a live event
to drive it: “The UK home improvement glazing market has
always been a separate industry despite being related to
building. It has its own dynamics, methods, attitudes and
needs and therefore should have its own showcase and
forum. That is what The FIT Show promises and why we at
Synseal have been amongst the first to support it with a
large stand.”
With The FIT Show taking place in April 2013 there is time, says
Mark, to ensure that Synseal has some special announcements at
the show:
Glenn Evans & Sarah Cha mbers
“We believe there
should be something
special to reward
visitors for attending
an event such as The
FIT Show,” says Mark.
In achieving the Zero Waste to Landfill objective, Synseal would ensure that all operational
and canteen waste produced on-site is sent for recycling where recycling routes exist.
Non-recyclable wastes would then be disposed of through Energy from Waste recovery
(incineration) therefore eliminating the need for landfill.
The aim of the project was to enhance Synseal’s environmental performance, reduce waste
disposal costs, increase its recycling capability and prevent wastage of valuable recyclable
materials specific to our industry. These included PVC-U off-cuts and aluminium off-cuts
that can be recycled and provide revenue for the company.
Visit www.fitshow.co.uk to
get your FREE ticket.
• 284 tonnes of plastic, wood, cardboard, aluminium, mixed recyclables
(drinks cans, plastic bottles etc), polypropylene and mixed metal being recycled
• 264 tonnes of PVC-U waste have been recycled over the last 6 months • 12 tonnes of gasket waste recycled and bought back from the recycler
by Synseal - recycled material is used to produce gasket
• Non-recyclable waste collections reduced from 2 a week, collections of
approx 6 tonnes, to a collection once every two weeks of approx 4 tonnes
As a result of the achievement of Zero Waste
to Landfill, Synseal will reduce its annualised
total waste management bill by 28%.
Synseal has learnt collectively that benefiting
the environment holds benefits for the company
operations as a whole and it makes good business
sense to improve waste management activities.
It is evident that there are consequential cost savings
which will be used for investment in other areas of
the business. The process of waste auditing has
allowed focus to be developed for waste minimisation.
The next environmental project will be to further
reduce the amount of packaging waste produced
internally during the manufacturing process.
Synseal was short listed for last year’s ‘M ade in the Midlands’ green
manufacturer award for its previously completed environmental objectives.
We hope to further improve this recognition based on our achievement
of the Zero Waste to Landfill objective.

Synseal retains
it’s Fleet Operator
Recognition Scheme
accreditation
For the 2nd year running Synseal’s transport Department has been
assessed by Transport for London (TfL) and have retained the Fleet
Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) bronze award.
This is an industry-led accreditation scheme which
encourages sustainable best practice for road freight
operators who undertake deliveries within the UK.
At its core, FORS promotes safe working practices,
lawfulness and a corporate social responsibility to
improve the performance of road freight operations.
By achieving this award our customers can have peace
of mind that Synseal continue to work hard to reduce
risk, continue to be legally compliant, greener and
more efficient.

Synseal pitches its
roof business in
Europe at Fensterbau
Synseal travelled to meet its export customers and prospects by exhibiting at
the renowned Fensterbau fair in Germany’s Nuremberg.
Synseal used Fensterbau to increase its customer base throughout mainland Europe for
Global conservatory roofs and SkySpace large span portal frames, products for which the
company is establishing a strong international reputation.
Global conservatory roofs have proved to be popular among the growing sector for
‘English’ conservatory roofs, and also because the products are highly adaptable for local
preferences. Synseal intends to develop existing customers in addition to creating new
export partnerships.
In particular, the market for large span portal frames is a lucrative worldwide niche
that requires engineering and technical expertise that is held by few companies and
individuals. Since establishing the SkySpace division just over a year ago, headed by
acknowledged portal expert Colin Poole, Synseal has grown its presence through
significant investment in systems, products and manufacturing facilities.
“Synseal has committed fully to the portal market having realised the
potential that exists,” said Synseal Commercial & Export Sales Director
- Gareth Edwards.“We have the best people in the world in this
sector and we have developed products that match their vision and
capabilities. SkySpace portal frames and Global conservatory roofs
have an excellent reputation in Europe and we want to build on this”.

New marketing literature
designed to help you sell more!
Synseal’s marketing department has been working hard over the last few
months to deliver a new suite of marketing material for our customers.
The key advantage of using the Synseal literature is that although you’ll get outstandingly
good creative graphic design, you’ll also get design that has a marketing focus, because
we never forget that the core objective is to help you sell more products and services.
Another benefit of the Synseal literature is that presenting a consistent style will
strengthen and reinforce your company’s identity, making your brand more visible and
better known. It will also create an overall impression of efficiency, reliability and trust
- invaluable assets for any organisation.
See enclosed
leaflet for more
information
All of the literature shown is available now, either plain

Investing in
customer care
Synseal achieve
ICM accreditation
Synseal has partnered with Maguire Training to raise the bar on
telephone skills for it’s customer care team. The programme is
being delivered on site in four parts over a number of weeks and
gives staff the time in between each workshop to practice new
skills learnt and share their learning with other work colleagues.
A vital part of the Synseal success story has been the credit management
team, as keeping cash flowing through each element of the business is crucial.
To demonstrate best practice in customer service, credit policy, compliance,
developing staff, and monitoring performance, the credit management team at
Synseal embarked on a three-year journey towards achieving the ICM’s Quality in
Credit Management accreditation. During this time improvements were made to all
aspects of its credit control functions including staff training and automation
of internal processes.
Our customers are
important to us and
we want to make it
easier for them to do
business with us!
Our aim is to embed high standards of service for both our internal and
external customers. At the foundation of the training is our Synseal
Customer Service ‘Gold Standard’ which sets out the service standards our
customers can expect in terms of how we deal with their calls and enquiries.
“Communication within departments and the business as a whole is fundamental to what we
are looking to achieve. This has led to greater sharing of information with credit managers in
other industries on their practices and experiences, and the implementation of better staff
training and process guides to keep staff members up-to-date on changes.” Says David Hughes,
Senior Credit Manager at Synseal.
Managing your cash is one of the most important aspects of running your business. When you’re
on top of it, you’re financially stable. A business can fail because of a shortage of cash even while it
is profitable. By using our expertise and experience, we can help you to control your cash flow and
make a success of your business.
Chief Executive of the ICM, Philip King says that it is clear from the assessors report that Synseal’s
first class systems and processes, as well as the enthusiasm, commitment and pride in ‘a job well
done’ from the whole team, have earned them the QiCM Award.
“The programme gives recognition to the whole team and to Synseal’s management
for encouraging continuous improvement. It was an honour for me to make the
presentation to such an enthusiastic group of credit professionals.”
Collecting money for good causes
Cycling to change lives! 990 miles…
71 miles per day… 14 days - all for a good cause!
Synseal’s Manning mobs TV man Mark in The Mall
The Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride is probably the toughest challenge anyone
can undertake in the UK. This amazing cycle ride tours the furthest possible point to
point distance in the British Isles. Malc Smith from conservatory manufacturing at Synseal
took on this challenge to raise much needed funds in memory of our former colleague
Keith Pare who worked with Malc here at Synseal. Keith was treated for a brain tumour
on Ward 303 at the Derby Royal Hospital but sadly lost his life in 2011.
This ultimate British cycling challenge started on the 4th August and Malc
raised an impressive £1700 for a fabulous cause. Well done Malc!
Running for charity
The London Marathon is the largest annual fund raising event on the planet - runners have
raised over £500 million for good causes since the race began in 1981. Terry Ledwith, one
of Synseal’s Area Development Managers, ran the Virgin London Marathon this year in
support of the Seafarers UK charity. Seafarers UK is the new name for King George’s Fund
for Sailors, which has been helping seafarers since 1917. The charity gives grants to help
seafarers’ families, including widows and children.
Synseal’s ever-enthusiastic New Build Business Development Manager Bruce Manning
was caught up in television coverage of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in The Mall
when he encountered reporter Mark Austin while he was mixing with the crowds.
Bruce was with boys and girls from the 25th Bromley Scout Group of which he is the
Leader, having been a keen Scout Leader for more than 20 years. Finding himself and his
Scouts walking alongside a bemused Mark Austin, who was giving a running commentary
live on ITV News, Bruce pounced and placed a traditional Scout neckerchief round the
reporter’s neck which he continued to wear whilst he walked. The tradition started at
the Royal Wedding last year when Mark was first mobbed!
Bruce told the reporter and millions of viewers how much he and his charges were
enjoying themselves, following which Mark interviewed some of the Scouts who
declared it to be the best day of their lives.
Terry ran the 26 miles in 4 hours and 46 minutes and raised £1550! Well done Terry!

Synseal rolls out the WOW factor
Synseal has made the selling of windows and conservatories easier with
the launch of a new online app that allows the homeowner to see in precise
detail how Synseal products will look when installed on their property.
d it
The new WOW visualisation app from Synseal works
by taking an uploaded photograph of a homeowner’s
house and furnishing it with the products they are
interested in. Product options include conservatory
designs and popular home improvements, such as
bi-fold doors and vertical sliding windows.
oo
wow
app
lo o k s!
The WOW app can be branded for Synseal
fabricators and placed on their company website
The homeowner then chooses a colour and styling
details and then positions where the products will
go to update the elevation view of their property.
This augmented image is then saved as a PDF and
emailed to them. A copy of the PDF will also be sent to the local Synseal fabricator hosting
the online WOW app to flag what the homeowner is potentially interested in and prompt
an opportunity to discuss their requirements in detail. The WOW app can be fully branded
for Synseal fabricator customers and placed on a personalised domain or company
website, and full digital support is provided by Synseal from start to finish.

Putting our customers at
the forefront of technology
It’s an exciting time for digital marketing at Synseal! In the last year we have
spent a lot of time and effort improving our marketing offerings… and the
benefits are not just seen by Synseal.
Our plan for digital has been two staged, first stage a committed drive to improve our
own offerings, making it easier to find and source relevant materials throughout our
sites and gain access to them at a time and place convenient to the customer.
Our new synseal.com support centre, wer-synseal.com WER calculator and
synseal-homeowner.co.uk sites are key to this strategy and have all received recent
development. These sites are now geared to enable you to source marketing materials
easily, produce BFRC WER accredited reports instantly and gain homeowner leads for
your own company or to pass onto loyal installers, all at the click of a button.
This is only the tip of the iceberg… Our new Advantage Digital Marketing brochure sets
the benchmark in industry leading digital services, specifically aimed at our fabricator
and installer network. Our services span from logo design to fully tailored websites and
apps. The list of services are growing, with our December 2012 edition of the brochure
expanding to include SMS text message marketing to take advantage of recent advances
in mobile phone technology.
Our services come with benefits like no other; you deal with internal Synseal staff only,
whom have in-depth knowledge of the product range and market, not a digital designer
who works outside of PVC-U. Our products are designed to minimise stress, we do all of
the hard work for you, but consult you on key matters to ensure we hit the message you
need to drive your business. Need a logo? We can design it FOC in-house. Our response
speed is second to none, we can design and build you a bespoke website, including a
logo design within 5 weeks, and when we launch a new product the content, images and
pdf downloads will automatically appear on your site on launch day!

Global Summer - orangery style and elegance
Global Summer is an easy to fit fascia cladding and internal pelmet system
for the Global conservatory roof. Global Summer gives you the distinguished
look of a traditional orangery without the need for expensive parapet walls,
leak prone flat roofs or the added engineering complexity of a lantern roof.
As simple to install as the rest of the Global range - Global Summer uses high quality
aluminium decorative gutter fascias and internal pelmet pods that hook onto the eaves
beam. These unique pelmet pods provide a rigid former to plaster to and allow downlighters
or speakers to be incorporated into the conservatory for added consumer appeal.
Global Summer
is the ideal upsell
opportunity.
Offer something new
and exciting to
your customers!
Features and benefits at a glance
• Creates an orangery style conservatory with no fiddly finishing required
• Opportunity for increased profit margin per conservatory sale
• Fast to fit - with unique internal pelmet pods and complementary mullion pods
• 2 internal height options - raised line and low line
• External retro fit option available
• Decorative orangery fascias conceal guttering and provide external cornice detailing
• The decorative gutter fascia and pelmet pods can be used independently
• Eye-catching GRP decorative pilasters fixed to supporting aluminium frame connectors can be optionally incorporated to complete the classical look
- 90º corner and 180º inline designs are available
• Uses a standard Global roof - for a cost effective orangery solution
The Global Summer advantage
Global Summer has been designed from the ground up to be as easy to fit as possible.
Our carefully designed internal soffit system simply slots into place on the internal ring
beam and allows for easy adjustment on site. The pelmet pods provide the ideal former
for plasterboard, providing a finish that feels solid and ‘properly built’. The system also
provides easy access to the soffit void to make installation of lighting or speaker systems
straightforward and hassle free. The decorative gutter fascia is manufactured in highquality aluminium - made to stand the test of time. Support for the decorative gutter
fascia comes from ‘ultra-strong’ aluminium gutter brackets screwed into the ring beam
that provide a reliable, premium looking product.
We are confident that Global Summer is the easiest to install orangery system on the
market, and eliminates ultra-fiddly finishing - letting you install quicker and to a higher
standard that will delight your customers - and lead to more referral business.
The growth of the orangery market
The last few years have seen a steady rise in customer demand for orangeries as
the conservatory market has matured and consumers are beginning to aspire to
something with a more bespoke, architectural feel.
Orangery style conservatories also help capture market sectors that haven’t
traditionally been open to the idea of a conservatory, as they are perceived as
being a higher status extension than conventional conservatories. Global Summer
provides an affordable route into the orangery market and can help customers
achieve the look they aspire to at an attractive price-point.

Two fitting options
Global Summer has two main fitting options - raised line and low line which alters the height that the decorative gutter fascia sits above the conservatory windows.
Raised line installation
uses the orangery eaves
beam extender beneath
our standard eaves beam
to lift the roof 170mm over
the frames and provides
increased space between the
pelmet pod internal soffit
and the roof. This increased
height adds grandeur to
Global Summer installations,
provides a more authentic
orangery look and helps
distinguish them from
standard conservatories.
Low line installations use
our bi-fold door support
underneath the heavy duty
eaves beam to keep the
pelmet pod internal soffit in
line with the conservatory’s
gutter. Low line is
ideal when the overall
conservatory height needs
to be contained, or to fit
in with a more compact
property’s proportions.
The pod range
Colours
Our innovative and versatile pod system creates a ‘ladder’ framework that allows for easy
on-site adjustment. Pods are available as either pelmet pods with a 300mm projection
or as mullion pods with a projection of 150mm - perfect for creating the vertical mullion
section between windows. The rear aluminium section overhangs to make fixing back to
the eaves beam as easy as possible. The pelmet pods are manufactured using high grade
marine-ply for structural stability.
Available in both Georgian and Victorian styles, in a range of woodgrain or
Artisan woodgrains - Global Summer can perfectly match customers requirements.

Pilasters
Optional GRP decorative pilasters are an eye-catching feature which evoke the classical period.
Available in 3 painted finishes; White, Cream and Chartwell Green, the pilasters deliver an
elegant finishing touch to the Global Summer orangery, the stylish design enhancement
of the market leading Global conservatory roof. They perfectly complement the roof,
include self-draining flutes and are a beautiful addition that completes an installation.
Versatile system
The Global Summer system allows you to use each element of the system independently
from one another, giving a wealth of options. Some customers will want the grandeur of
the decorative gutter fascia without the internal pelmet pods, while others might choose
a traditional conservatory exterior but want the versatility of the pelmet pod system enabling them to incorporate lights within the structure. This modular design gives you
multiple opportunities for up-selling, as customers who aren’t looking for a full orangery
style conservatory can still be sold the internal pelmet pod system - giving them tangible
product benefits, and giving you a higher value sale.
Look out for our new Global Summer workshops
coming soon! Our technical team will show you how easy
and quick it is to install. Come and see the product for
yourself and learn why you should be selling it!

Global Glass - for your IGU double
and triple glazing requirements
Global Glass is a specialist manufacturing division of Synseal Extrusions Ltd.
Specify Global Glass to ensure the very best in product quality and service.
Total quality control is carried out using two basic principles: building in
quality at every stage and continually improving quality standards in order
to achieve optimum performance and customer satisfaction.
£2 million invested in
technology processes
to ensure Global Glass
leads the way.
Insulated glass unit (IGU) manufacturing for windows, doors and conservatories is all
undertaken on-site at our specialist Global Glass plant in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire.
This ensures quality control of manufactured products, stock, cost base management,
reliability of supply chain materials and, even more importantly for customers, precise
management of price, lead times and product availability.
The IGU assembly process is automated and testing is computerised to ensure a
consistently high quality product. With investment in the latest technologies and
modern machinery, Global Glass delivers products which are consistent in quality.
Operational processes are constantly reviewed to reduce waste, diagnose potential
problems and identify solutions quickly and systematically.
Insulated Glass Units (IGUs)
Choosing a sealed glass unit manufacturer is a critical decision. Consumers are increasingly
demanding higher energy ratings to keep their homes warmer and heating bills lower.
Low maintenance glass
A revolutionary low maintenance coating is applied to the glass as part of the
manufacturing process, which means that it is fused to the surface of the glass.
The coating uses the rain and natural light from the sun to efficiently combat the
dirt and grime that accumulates on the outside of the window. By reducing the need
for manual cleaning, low maintenance glass provides an ideal and safe solution for
keeping hard to reach or hazardous glazed surfaces clean.
Solar coated glass
Solar coated glass can be used on windows, doors and most commonly on conservatory
roofs to help prevent the build-up of heat during hot summer months.
The coating on the glass helps reflect heat from the sun back to the outside atmosphere,
giving a more comfortable and useable living space. The glass is available in a range of
tints which allows the glass to absorb more heat, whilst the coating reflects heat back to
the outside.
Low E glass
Low E glass has a microscopic metal coating which reflects central heating back into the
room. DG units incorporating this specially coated glass offer up to 33% better insulation
than conventional insulated glass units, to keep homes warmer and reduce heating bills.
Gas filling
Combining energy efficient frames and glass is crucial to delivering overall window
thermal performance. Whether the BFRC Window Energy Rating scheme or FENSA
U-value rating is selected as the route to technical compliance, Global Glass is the supplier
of choice for thermally efficient sealed units. Whatever the rating required, Global Glass
has the IGU products to meet energy efficiency needs. With Argon or Krypton glass
filled cavities and warm edge spacer bar options, Global Glass can deliver a range of
thermal performance solutions to satisfy customer requirements. Global Glass employs
a continuous improvement policy to ensure that both manufacturing technology and
production standards are optimised.
This policy has already seen investment in state-of-the-art gas filling technology,
improved toughening facilities, inspection systems and logistics. Further strategic
investments in both technology and processes will be deployed as Global Glass intends
to lead the way in advanced glass manufacturing technology.
Global Glass constantly strives to find
new ways to design, produce and deliver
market leading IGU products.
10
Global Glass offer Argon and Krypton gas fills, with measurable improvement in thermal
performance. Argon is inexpensive, non-toxic, non-reactive, clear, and odourless. Krypton
is non-toxic, non-reactive, clear, and odourless and delivers better thermal performance
than Argon, but is more expensive. Krypton gas filling is particularly useful when slimline,
high-performance bespoke sealed units with smaller airgaps are required.
Window Energy Ratings
Window Energy Ratings (WER) are design simulations that can accurately calculate how
energy-efficient a specified window will be in use. The WER system is based on a scale
of A-G, with A-rated windows being the most energy-efficient. Up to 25% of heat within
homes escapes through windows, so consumers are increasingly demanding A-rated
windows to retain domestic heat and lower energy bills.
A Window Energy Rating and label applies to a whole window (frame and glass) rather
than the frame or glass components individually. A combination of multi-chambered
PVC-U window frame profile, spacer bar and high performance glass will create the most
thermally efficient project solution. Door Set Energy Rating (DSER) calculations provide
similar thermal evaluations for doors.
Synseal can provide expert advice to assist in all aspects of WER and DSER specification,
with simulations carried out in accordance with BS EN ISO10077-2.

For high performance conservatory roof and
window glass...choose Celsius the market leader
The Celsius range was one of the first glazing
solutions on the market to offer the unique
combination of heat reflection and thermal
insulation, but Celsius performance glass has
even more benefits.
• Rainfall and traffic noise are dramatically reduced when compared to 25mm polycarbonate. The Argon gas filled units offer greater insulation properties
• Destructive UV rays are reduced by up to 94%, thus offering protection for furniture and fabrics from sun damage
• With ‘Easy Clean’ technology included as standard, your glass will require much less maintenance
Triple glazing bead for
optimum efficiency
Triple glazed windows offer optimum energy efficiency and value for money,
making your customers homes warm and their energy bills lower, and with an
extra pane of glass it’s quieter too.
As the window has a third pane of glass, the unit is much harder to break than the double

Renolit foil changes
In the light of exhaustive technical discussions with our foil supplier
RENOLIT, we have made a necessary change to the specification of our
White Woodgrain, Brilliant White Woodgrain and Cream Woodgrain foil
finishes. From September 2012, the current RENOLIT EXOFOL MX foil has
been replaced in the UK by the higher specification RENOLIT EXOFOL FX
for White and Cream finishes only.
Why the change?
A foiled profile weathering issue was originally identified in the Benelux countries.
After extensive tests were conducted in both the laboratory and at various real-time test
sites around the world, RENOLIT identified the cause of the problem - namely, that after a
period of approximately 10-14 years, UV light can cause a chemical reaction with titanium
dioxide in the pigmented PVC base layer to liberate chlorine radical particles which
attack the bonded acrylic upper layer, resulting in discolouration and visible micro-cracks
appearing on the foiled profile. On horizontal surfaces, moisture can then act as a catalyst
to accelerate the weathering of the foil finish, which could potentially cause the film to
peel and flake to resemble a painted timber window in need of maintenance.

Every little helps:
Synseal adds foil for
consistent colour
Synseal has responded to customers who suggested a minor but important
cosmetic improvement to its foiled patio door kits.
RENOLIT has concluded that this characteristic will be seen in all PVC films with a high
level of titanium dioxide, i.e. White and Cream, independent of the manufacturer.
Extended guarantee
The superior composition of EXOFOL FX means that Synseal White Woodgrain, Brilliant
White Woodgrain or Cream Woodgrain foiled profiles manufactured from 3rd September
2012 now carry a guarantee extended to 15 years for all installations worldwide.
Our aim is to consistently deliver high
quality foiled profiles, which are precisely
colour-matched each and every time.
12
Before
After
Previously when the White profile of the patio doors has been finished with a
woodgrain or Artisan foil, the door threshold and outer frame remained visible as
White. Synseal responded immediately by foiling the entire profile to ensure the door
is fully colour matched throughout. This is a relatively minor change to our patio door
kit, but makes quite a difference to the overall appearance.
The Synseal patio system comes with the full range of colours and is easy to order,
easy to fabricate and easy to install - while providing margins to drive sales growth
and profitability.

Evolve - the fabricator only range from Synseal.
Fully manufactured products, made to order,
proven quality, delivered fast
A fabricator
manufacturing low
volume products is almost
guaranteed to be losing
money on every frame
they produce.
Manufacturing specialist, low volume products can be disruptive and costly
for mainstream fabricators. This is why Synseal has expanded its Evolve
range of fully-manufactured products to include patio and bi-fold doors,
alongside its market leading vertical sliding sash windows.
A fabricator manufacturing low volume products such as patio and bi-fold doors or
vertical sliding sash windows is almost guaranteed to be losing money on every frame
they produce. If fabricators analyse their costs honestly and consider everything from
the inconvenience of switching production from core, high volume products, to the
downtime in setting up for small runs, high scrap levels, poor optimisation of foiled
profiles, and the cost of large stockholdings of seldom used profiles, we suspect many
of them would be shocked by their findings.
If fabricators do the sums, the Synseal’s Evolve range offers a simple solution...
Synseal introduced Evolve VS fabrication as a support service when it became aware
of the difficulties it created for customers making this type of low volume window.
We produce these frames on a seven day lead time, at great prices and with a big range
of options, allowing fabricators to compete in what are very lucrative markets, without
disrupting their mainstream business.
Synseal’s sophisticated fabrication facility is one of the more tangible ways in which the
company provides support for its customers. It allows its fabricators to focus on volume
production of their most popular products, to gain the most from their production
facilities. It also allows companies to channel capital investment more efficiently; many
will invest in equipment just for the purpose of producing a relatively small number of
patio or bi-fold doors for example when that finance, and energy could be better directed.
In short, fabricators are able to offer a full product range to their customers,
enjoying good margins and without the distractions of producing them themselves.

Synseal unveils
comprehensive
hardware range
Synseal has published its eagerly anticipated hardware catalogue,
which details the new comprehensive hardware range that brings
together the very best residential window and door handles, hinges,
shootbolts and accessories, providing fabricators with a wide selection
of products that offer affordable quality. Hardware is from industry
leaders, such as Yale and Mila, at the best prices to help give customers
the edge over the competition all available ex-stock.
A-rated door
from Synseal
Synseal can now offer A-rated doors in its Legend profile, giving its
customers a distinct marketing advantage over their competitors.
Doors can also be suited with other products in the Legend range,
giving fabricators and installers greater options than those companies
that sell doors and windows from separate suppliers.
Synseal joins a very exclusive group of companies that provide an A-rated door.
Fully glazed single doors include a 40mm triple glazing unit, which includes two inner
panes of low-E glass (and a float glass outer pane), argon gas fill, and warm edge spacer
bar - all of which are off-the-shelf options for Synseal’s in-house glass division Global Glass.
Thanks to continuous product development, the new multi-chamber large door
outer-frame allows the door to be fully steel-reinforced, which is suitable for all colour
options. The A-rated door is available in both Legend chamfered and ovolo options.
Everything your
customer needs!
From window
handles and friction
stays to trickle vents
and letter boxes,
Synseal’s hardware
range has it all!
Included in the catalogue are attractive window handles, durable friction stays,
easy-to-fit shootbolts, ergonomic door handles, letter boxes, locks, and a selection of
industry leading security options, including items that meet the enhanced ‘Secured by
Design’ police preferred specification.
The catalogue has been published with clarity in mind, and illustrates each product
with a high definition photograph alongside a detailed technical drawing. The items
are accompanied with a checklist detailing each product’s characteristics and strengths,
and there is a handy ‘at-a-glance’ section that quickly identifies key points, such as the
guarantees available, and which industry standards they meet.

SkySpace portal
frames… defining
the art of the possible
Combine a SkySpace portal frame with Synseal’s market-leading glazed
roof system to create the ultimate wide span solution. Creative designs
for wide span portal frames are almost limitless, for both residential and
commercial applications. From sizeable conservatories with traditional
styling to more contemporary roof glazing solutions for buildings, such
as offices, sports halls, restaurant facilities, hotels and conference centres,
SkySpace portal frames are custom-made to meet project requirements and
deliver versatile architectural spaces.

Extending the
holiday season
Caravan Industry and Park Operator Magazine talked to Synseal,
a company better known for its conservatory expertise, about how
‘portal frames ’ are offering more opportunities for caravan park operators
who would all like to invest in their sites, and add facilities that would
welcome a greater number of visitors and extend the holiday season.
However, logistics and cost often stop those ideas in their tracks.
Homeowners have long realised that a practical and cost efficient way of extending their
properties is by adding a conservatory. It makes sense, and conservatories are constantly
evolving to meet the demands of homeowners; they are light, airy and attractive to sit in,
and are more convenient and cost efficient than a fully built extension.
So why can’t the conservatory principle be applied to other
situations, the caravan park industry for example?
Synseal’s SkySpace portal frame division is able to meet increased demand from hotels,
leisure centres and caravan parks that are specifying large portal structures - attractive
glass buildings that can house swimming pools, restaurants and function rooms and all
manner of applications that benefit from large, unrestricted open spaces under cover.
Flexible, lightweight, convenient to transport and speedy to construct, SkySpace
aluminium portal frames offer reduced cost and labour time on site, when compared
to conventional building methods. SkySpace aluminium portal frames are an ideal
specification for swimming pool enclosures, able to handle exposure to chlorine and
constant high humidity levels.
Discreet portal framing is the key to designing bespoke wide span or super-sized glazed
roof structures. Portal frame legs locate into purpose-designed base plates. The sleeved
aluminium profiles are bolted together in ‘Meccano-fashion’ and include purlins and welded
angled trusses, as required, to provide a support structure for the roof glazing above.
Aluminium components are polyester powder coated to any RAL colour, according to
specification. Fully engineered drawings and structural calculations are all provided by
the SkySpace team as part of a complete portal frame design and manufacturing solution.
Talk to our dedicated SkySpace portal frame team today
on how they can support you! Call 01623 443200
The engineering skills and other technical resources necessary to service this market correctly
must not be underestimated; the similarities between domestic roof glazing and larger,
portal framed versions are only skin deep. Portal frames demand design and engineering
considerations that are in a different world to the average domestic conservatory.
The ‘portal’ is constructed from high-grade aluminium sections that require considerable
skill and experience, backed by complex calculations, to design and form the frame that
will provide support for what are large spans of glass. There can be no error for margin.
The portal frame support structure is made to measure to suit project requirements and
typically carries a proven Synseal Global roof which is BBA accredited and able to handle
the most extreme weather conditions.
Therefore, Synseal supports installers with surveying and costing, engineering and
design calculations and drawings, contracts, site management, health and safety.
The firm will also manufacture and test assemble the SkySpace portal frame structure
in its factory to facilitate installation.
Many homeowners choose conservatories because they ‘bring the outside in’. Why should
it be any different for caravan parks? People choose caravanning holidays to be closer to
the outdoors. Therefore, by offering facilities that can be used outside the normal summer
period - but are still ‘outdoors’ - they offer fantastic opportunities for caravan park owners
for extending the season.

CE Marking - are you ready for it?
New legislation comes into force on 1 July 2013. Under the Construction
Products Regulation most windows and doors will need CE Marking. It’s the
responsibly of installers, fabricators and suppliers to comply. Richard Bate
of Build Check, test laboratory, consultants and certification services for the
construction and fenestration industries, talks about how this will affect the
window and door industry.
We believe most installers and
fabricators will fall foul of new
legislation that requires CE Marking
on windows and external doors when
it’s introduced on 1 July 2013. This is
a strong statement but there’s been
little press coverage about the new
laws and when we talk to installers,
fabricators and suppliers most simply
don’t know changes are coming. To
make matters worse, anyone who
already claims a CE Mark may need to
make changes to comply with the new
laws. In practice, the new Construction
Systems companies
System companies can help customers by providing the relevant ITT of products, carried
out by a Notified Body. It should be noted a systems house or component supplier’s own
report (ie not from a Notified Body) will no longer be acceptable for CE Mark declarations.
The new mark
There are four common tasks required to CE Mark a product under the Construction
Products Regulation:
• A Factory Production Control (FPC) system. This is a quality manual for the production of windows or doors to ensure they conform to regulations, including product performance. ISO9001 is acceptable, but an FPC can be written and implemented in house
• Initial Type Testing of products
• The Declaration of Performance and System Description. This details the minimum information required to be in the public domain and entitles the organisation to put the CE Mark on the finished product
Richard Bate - Technical Director, Build Check
Products Regulation (CPR) means individuals and organisations manufacturing or
installing windows and doors both B2B and B2C after 1 July 2013 are legally responsible
for ensuring products are CE Marked. Many companies use CE Marks already but subtle
changes from Construction Products Directive to the new CPR may mean changes to
those existing CE Marks.
Why does it matter?
The new legislation will be enforced by European Law. Build Check has spoken to
Trading Standards and it is our understanding they may investigate any organisation
which flouts CE Marking requirements and may prosecute. Policing may also come
from Competent Person Schemes: e.g Certass and Fensa. Jason Clemmit, MD of Certass,
said: “The Competent Persons Scheme requires we ensure installations meet Building
Regulations including Part L and Part K. CE Marking will become part of the audit process
for product compliance within this.” Because CE Marking for windows and doors includes
safety testing of some components, being liable if things go wrong could have serious
consequences for those convicted, including fines and/or imprisonment. To explain what
organisations need to do to comply with the new regulations we have put together a
quick overview.
Installers
• The CE Mark needs to be affixed visibly, legibly and indelibly to the product or on to a label attached to it. In some circumstances the CE Mark can be on the packaging or accompanying documents
Don’t wait
Most windows and external pedestrian doors fitted after 1 July 2013 will have to comply.
Although the legislation hasn’t come into force yet, the standards are already in place
and companies and organisations can get ahead by getting sorted now. Build Check has
developed cost effective solutions to assist with compliance.

CE Marking
workshops: invest
in your business
From 1 July 2013 installers will be responsible for providing a CE Mark for an applicable
product. This requires a Declaration of Performance stating the products they install
achieve the required standards and the process of testing can be traced. There are two
ways to do this:
• If installers buy the windows and doors complete from one supplier including frames, glass unit, hardware and door furniture, then the complete window or doorset must carry a CE Mark. The fabricator or distributor should supply
the relevant CE Marking documentation
• If installers buy the frames from one supplier and glass from another, or for example, use a different door panel supplier, then they will have to provide the CE Mark for every product specification installed. This means checking
each window or door satisfies the relevant product standards and the finished window or door specification complies with CE Marking requirements.
Whichever option installers choose it is the responsibility of the organisation that brings the complete product to market to prove their products meet
CE Marking requirements
Fabricators
From 1 July 2013 fabricators will have to CE Mark all of the complete products they supply.
The relevant product standards to achieve this are typically BS EN 14351-1:2006+A:2010
for windows and doors, and BS EN 1279 for insulated glass units.
David Leng speaki ng at our recent CE Marki ng worksh op
At Synseal we value our fabricator partners and we are prepared to
significantly invest in helping you develop your business - your success is
our success. As part of that investment we have been running CE Marking
workshops at our head office in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire.
A note of caution: even where EN 14351 has already been achieved, Initial Type Testing
(ITT) has to be carried out by an accredited Notified Body. It is the responsibility of the
fabricator to ensure all products comply, so check with systems and hardware suppliers.
The workshops have proved to be very popular and
have booked up very quickly. To meet the demand
two new dates have been added for 2013, 19th February
and the 19th March.
If fabricators supply a complete window or doorset (frame, glass, panels, etc) to trade
customers, CE Mark and Declaration of Performance should be sufficient for the installer
to prove compliance to the CPR.
If you are interested in either of these dates, please contact
[email protected] or call her on 01623 443200.
If fabricators only supply component parts of windows or doors, customers will be
responsible for the CE Mark on the finished product.
We look forward to welcoming you to Synseal in the very near future,
attending the workshops gives you the opportunity to visit our showroom !

Winning partnership
creates opportunities
East Kilbride-based Trade Frames Direct has been involved on a prestigious
housing development in Kilmaurs, East Ayrshire, thanks to its excellent
reputation in the region.
The Synseal fabricator manufactured, supplied and installed a range of products,
including casement windows, tilt and turns and french doors - all using Shield profile
alongside Evolve vertical sliders, also supplied by Synseal.
The Rowallan Castle development - worth £275,000 to Trade Frames Direct - began in
the autumn of 2010, and is an ongoing project by developer, Charles Church, to build
35 detached luxurious five and six-bedroom homes. The exclusive gated properties are
nestled in five clusters in a mature estate surrounded by listed buildings and a Colin
Montgomerie-designed championship golf course.
“Not only do they supply high value products
such as the vertical sliders
- but they are also supportive on site.”
In keeping with the adjacent historic buildings, the developers’ architects specified
vertical sliders on the houses’ front elevations. “The unique selling point of these
properties is that each house is individual to reflect its surroundings,” explained
Michael Bishop, Trade Frames Direct’s Director. “As part of the tendering process,
we were able to draw on our portfolio of successful projects that we have
previously carried out for Charles Church, as well as our close relationship with
Synseal. They were able to supply the market-leading Evolve vertical sliding
windows that suited with the other windows on the development.”
Winning prestigious contracts, like this one on the Charles Church Rowallan Castle, relies
on having a supply chain behind you that works with you and supports you, rather than
simply providing products, as Michael explained. “We have a very strong and long-lasting
relationship with Synseal,” he said. “Not only do they supply high value products
- such as the vertical sliders – but they are also supportive on site.”
“Trade Frames Direct’s reputation allows its clients to rely on them
to deliver what they promise, when they promise,” Brian Walker,
Synseal’s Fabricator Development Manager said. “In order to achieve
that, they need suppliers behind them that they can trust, which is
why Synseal is much more than just a profile extruder. Not only can
we fill the gaps with bespoke high end products, such as the Evolve
vertical sliders, but we partner with our customers to help them
make the most of every opportunity.”

Online ordering
Fabricators were quick to switch from telephone orders to online orders
when the process was launched in October 2010.
Heavy duty
eaves beam
Homeowners can now buy wide spanning bi-fold doors that open up
virtually the whole side of their conservatory to provide added space
and flexible access to the garden. To ensure that these doors work
effectively, Synseal have developed a heavy duty eaves beam as part
of our professionally engineered self-supporting roof system that will
support an opening of up to 5m in width. Technical details are available
to download, please visit www.synseal.com.
Online ordering hands more control to Synseal’s customers. It is available 24 hours
a day, order confirmation is immediate, and a customer’s order history is always
available, so there is less risk of duplication.
Online ordering reduces fax costs, and cuts down on the amount of paper in the office
which saves money and benefits the environment. Time spent ordering is also reduced
so that staff can be getting on with other important duties.
Synseal has more than 5,000 products available to order online, giving customers an up
to the minute snapshot of the company’s stock. These sit alongside the latest technical
documents and other tools, designed to put more control at the customer’s fingertips.
The heavy duty eaves beam with bolster design is:
• Manufactured from aluminium with weather-resistant PVC-U claddings,
available in a range of colours
• Designed for flexibility of use and ease of installation, available in a choice
of two profile lengths
• The most cost-efficient support solution available, eliminating the need for expensive steel structures or the unnecessary expense of continuing the wide span support around all of the conservatory elevations, as frame height can be simply altered by 50mm on the remaining elevations to allow for the height of the Bolster (XBFDS1)
If you require extra wide span openings which are beyond
the capability of the Synseal heavy duty eaves beam, please
contact our portal frame department who will be able to
design and fabricate a structure to meet your requirements.

Synseal is taking the portal message to architects, and proving
that eye-catching glazed roof extensions are not just options for
homeowners, but can also dramatically improve commercial projects.
The undisputed UK leader in roof glazing, Synseal’s CPD seminar entitled ‘Roof Glazing
- the Art of the Possible’ has been approved by RIBA, and is now available for presentation
to architects and specifiers up and down the country.
Delegates will also receive a copy of Synseal’s new SkySpace brochure, which includes
the latest technical information and inspirational case studies where its custom
designed aluminium portal frames supporting large glazed roof structures have brought
architects’ dreams to reality. Synseal’s one-hour CPD seminar forms part of architects’
ongoing professional development, and details how advances made in the design and
construction of wide-span portal frames mean they can provide flexible solutions and
are no longer just suitable for big budget flagship projects.

customers to make things slicker and
actually, more pleasant for everyone.
Says Russell: “With 5 years experience
as Office Manager at Eurocell I was very
familiar with Synseal and was delighted
to be asked to join the company. I have
also worked in quality management and
look forward to bringing that experience
to the company.”

the fabricator customer base and to provide
support for these key customers to ensure
their growth. It is something that Paul is
very good at, having worked closely with
fabricators during an uninterrupted time
in the industry. Now Paul is happy to return
to what he believes is the most dynamic
brand in the business. Paul says: “I enjoyed
my time at Synseal back in the ‘Nineties
and Synseal has of course changed
dramatically, as has the industry. I am
delighted to be back to lead the task of
ensuring our fabricator customers have
the products and tools by which their

Internal Business Development Manager
Tim’s role is to ensure the growth of
Synseal’s customer base through the
company’s internal business development
team. Tim enjoyed working for a successful
conservatory kit manufacturer/supplier as
the National Sales Manager but the lure of
working for Synseal was too much to resist:
“It was a big decision for me but I could
see that Synseal was leading the market
in these difficult economic times. I am
passionate about the industry and
wanted to be a part of a company with
the same mind-set.”

Synseal gives them - it gives us a great
foundation to grow the business from.
I’m really enjoying working with my
design colleague Heather on moving the
brand forward and we are beginning to
see the benefits of crunching through all
this hard work!”
Matthew is a window industry ‘lifer’
having begun his sales career at what
is now Avocet. He then moved into
profiles working with a couple of
systems companies and more recently
selling conservatory roofs, windows
and doors for trade fabricators. Now he
brings all of that experience to Synseal:
“I have spent all of my working life
in the window trade and I love it!”
says Matthew. “It is a vibrant and
exciting business and I am really
excited about bringing what I have
learned to Synseal and, of course,
to growing with a company with a
great attitude to business and some
superb products.”

Terry Ledwit h
Area Sales Manager
Terry spent years working at ‘the coal face’
with Anglian before becoming an Area
Sales Manager for a systems supplier so
he knows what it’s like on both sides of
the fence. He therefore enjoys a special
relationship with his customers especially
those with retail operations. Living on the
south coast with his family, Terry spends
what he says is “far too much” of his spare
time on his boat, whilst also competing
in off-roading competitions when the
weather becomes inclement.
