GERMANIA SHIPYARD AGENCY WAS FOUNDED IN THE SUMMER OF 1996,
AND WAS THE VISION OF HEINZ GROSS, TOGETHER WITH A PARTNER.
DURING THE LAST 18 YEARS GERMANIA SHIPYARD AGENCY HAS BECOME
A WELL-ESTABLISHED PART OF THE GERMAN SHIPPING SOCIETY.

F
rom its first year, and
every other year since,
Germania has participated
in the world’s leading
shipping trade fair, SMM. It started
with a 20m2 booth in the back
rows, with Germania making a
name for themselves by serving pata
negra ham. Since then they have
grown to be the largest exhibitor at
the show, with an exhibition area
more of than 350m2, and is still
serving special culinary delicacies to
entice visitors.
With his background as a CE,
and later as a superintendent of
a leading German container liner
company, Heinz Gross has always
been focused on ways to best add
value to his services to all parties
involved, especially the shipowner
and shipyard.
Germania started with two new
yards in the German market, which
had either just started opening up
to the merchant ship repair market,
or had not been in the picture for
years as far as German owners were
concerned.
Germania is justifiably proud of
what it has achieved in representing
these two yards since the beginning.
One of these yards has become
the major repair yard for German
cruise ships in the Mediterranean,
and the other yard in Singapore has
been the number one yard for small
and medium sized German feeder
tonnage. Even in the early days, it
was Mr Gross’ intention to build
up the market for the represented
yards.
In close cooperation with German
ship-owners, and the yards they
represent, it is still the goal of the
family-owned shipyard agency to
find the best solutions for both
parties, and to generate continuing
business between the yard and
the owner to enable both partners
to profit. Within the last few
years Germania’s network, and
the company as a whole, have
continued to grow.
In total, Germania now has
five fixed employees working in
Germany, and has agreements with
29 shipyards and over 20 highly
specialised afloat contractors.
“We are always trying to provide
the best possible service in the area,
and as well as offering yards as the
main centre for repairs, we provide
solutions for afloat works either at
a berth or at anchorage.” This is
still the motivating force
for Germania.
While Germania has gone about
establishing their business, the ship
repair and newbuilding market
changed dramatically. China was
just starting to grow, and is now
in a leading position in both the
shiprepair and newbuilding markets,
and Germania has managed to
establish a front row seat for that.
Today, they have the best available
yards along the Chinese coastlines
in its portfolio, starting with Hong
Kong, Zhoushan and Shanghai and
up to the north with Qingdao and
Dalian. While China has a large
impact on the business, it is still
“
We are always trying to
provide the best possible
service in the area, and as
well as offering yards as
the main centre for repairs,
provide solutions for afloat
works either at a berth or
at anchorage.

only a part of Germania`s portfolio.
As shipping is a global business,
the shipyard agency has continued
to develop its network worldwide,
hoping to be in the best position to
serve German owners in every port
throughout the world. That is just
one of the reasons why you might
see further changes in the network
in the future, as they work to find
better solutions for their valued
customers.
The new circumstances which have
developed since the banking crisis in
2008, are also changing the business.
The pressure on prices has increased
considerably, driven by smaller and
smaller vessel maintenance budgets.
Owners are also trying to extend the
drydocking interval from 5 to 7.5
years, which seriously reduces the
number of dockings. Germania has
been able to react to this with its
global underwater service provider.
As a first step, the company is in
position to support owners with the
necessary underwater inspection and
in the worst case scenario, is able to
offer an OEM approved professional
engineered solution should there be
an equipment failure.
The demand for improved fuel
efficient ships has also become
a major business challenge. As
Germany has a very young fleet,
with the majority of ships less than
10 years old, a newbuilding is not
an option for most of owners.
Together with some of the yards
it represents, Germania has been
able to develop conversions to
improve vessel fuel efficiency by
changing the bulbous bow and/
or the propeller. This has became
one of the key projects for one of
Germania‘s partner yards, which
already has a track record of more
than 50 successful projects for
several German owners, as well
as for the leading container liner
companies in the world.
Beside changes on the hardware
side, Germania has also stepped
into a new field for themselves
and owners, by providing different
software solutions. German
shipping is undergoing a serious
change, as until recently companies
have traditionally been mainly
family-owned. However, companies
need to change due to financial
demands, requiring the development
of bigger groups through the
merger of the smaller companies.
Germania wants to support their
customers during these times with
special software solutions, onshore
as well as offshore. In conjunction
with a new partner, they supply a
software-based ship performance
control system, which is the only
one that has been working since
1985. Inspired by the airline
industry, it allows you to have all
vessels performance data available
to you, including a performance
analysis in real-time, both onboard
and in the office.
Germania has also been working to
make it easier for owners to have a
comparable standard on tenders, an
easier comparison of yards, and at

the same time, a permanent budget
control. This software solution
allows planning without the necessity
to use several different programs.
So at SMM, Germania will be
showcasing a new drydocking tool
for the preparation of yard time, cost
control, reporting during yard time,
and maintenance budget planning
for your whole fleet.
As the environment for ship owners
has changed, financing has become
a big issue alongside the technical
requirements for the owner. For
bigger projects, Germania, together
with some of their yards, is in
a position to develop financing
solutions tailor-made for each
individual case. “This was not
possible anymore with a small two
man setup, so in 2010 we decided to
move into a new office in the heart
of Hamburg. Now, we are next door
to many of the major ship owners
and have the additional employed
staff for the backup office. We also
have a new sales representative,
which we were able to headhunt
from the leading Dutch shipyard
group, so we feel fit for the future.
With this professional set up, we
should be able to keep on growing
together with our German customer
base,” says Mr Gross.

deally situated at the mouth
of the Weser River, which
empties into the North Sea, lies
Bremerhavener Dock GmbH, or
as its better known – BREDO. With
its four floating docks and facilities for
vessels up to 210m, the yard is one of
the fastest shipyards for conversion,
maintenance and repair throughout
Europe. BREDO has a workforce of
more than 110 people that can be
built up to more than 400 people if
needed. The yard’s excellent network
of regional partners is ready to assist
whenever necessary.
BREDO is continuously
developing its skills to meet
shipping company’s needs, and to
be well-prepared for the future.
The shipyard has recently built
an engine workshop, with heavy
loading floors, in close proximity to
the docks. A glass-fibre reinforced
plastic piping (GRP) workshop
has also been established since late
2013. Personnel have been trained
and certified to carry out all kinds
of work in GRP.
BREDO’s flying squads can offer
worldwide service and assistance
– from a single technician to assist
the crew during repairs, up to a full
team of experts for any problem –
anywhere and at anytime.
With respect to the upcoming
IMO environmental protection
regulations, BREDO has taken
steps forward to assist ship-owners
in any possible way. With the
conversion of tanker Levana from
Bremen based shipping company
Carl Büttner, BREDO has proven
it´s skills when it comes to green
technologies. The installation of a
ballast water treatment plant, as
well as the retrofitting of a wetscrubber system into the existing
system onboard Levana will help
the vessel to meet the ECA/SECA
regulations in the near future.
Together with company BVT,
BREDO will be part of the
conversion of the ferry Ostfriesland,
into the first German seagoing LNG
propelled vessel. BVT has built a
whole new aft section to house
the LNG tanks and machinery,
along with the new propulsion
system. With its new aft part, the
vessel will have more space to
carry passengers, cars and goods
to the island of Borkum. The time
it spends travelling will be cut by
about 10%, together with lower
fuel consumption. This shows the
yard is already set up and ready
to assist shipping companies in all
manner of green technology.
All the above shows that BREDO is
a strong partner to have at your side,
to enable you to keep your vessels up
and running – and in business.

ormerly known as the
Subsea Solutions Alliance,
Subsea Global Solutions
is the globally formed
corporation consisting of the
assets and personnel of Miami
Diver LLC, Miami Diver Panama,
Miami Diver International, Parker
Diving Service LLC and Trident
BV. With a dedicated staff situated
worldwide, Subsea Global Solutions
has revolutionised the methods of
repair for ships; ship propellers,
thrusters, ship seal, Class approved
wet welding, and permanent shell
plate repairs with cofferdams. With
dive equipment, specialty tools,
engineering resources and trained
divers situated globally, Subsea
Global Solutions is able to mobilise
quickly anywhere throughout the
world with factory trained service
technicians qualified to perform
underwater repairs for OEM
equipment.
With diving operations throughout
the Caribbean, North America
and Europe we offer global diving
resources with local assets.

Subsea Global Solutions’ European
founding member, Trident BV, has
expanded into Spain and Northern
Africa by acquiring a substantial
number of shares in Underwater
Contractors Spain. With this new
addition to our global network, we
now cover locations throughout
Spain and Northern Africa
including the ports of Algeciras
(home port), Barcelona, Cadiz,
Huelva, Malaga, Valencia and
Tangiers, Morocco.
OFFSHORE SUPPORT
Subsea Global Solutions has been
very busy supporting offshore
installations around the world.
Our services have included technical
in-situ repairs of thrusters, and the
exchange of thrusters, as well as
the execution of shell plate repairs
to vessel hulls in remote locations
around the world. In-Water Surveys
and maintenance services including
Hull Cleaning have been performed
as well to the highest standards.
Due to the high value of offshore
vessels, any off-hire time or delays
coming on hire are a big deal.
This requires unique and thorough
repair procedures and tight
timelines, so that any maintenance
or repairs performed have minimal
or NO impact on operations.
Sometimes there is not enough time
or spare equipment available to
execute a tunnel thruster exchange.
With this being the case, Subsea
Global Solutions has created
innovative methods of in-tunnel
repairs. During a recent wet dock
event, tunnel thruster shaft seals were
replaced on several tunnel thrusters
while the vessel remained afloat.
Utilising the Subsea Global Solutions
flex door system, a dry hyperbaric
environment was created in the
thruster tunnel; thus allowing factory
trained diver / technicians to execute
a permanent repair to the tunnel
thruster lower gear box. While this
critical work was being performed
underwater, the vessel’s operator was
able to execute other work and vessel
outfitting with no impact to its return
date back to service.
Subsea Global Solutions has just
recently completed certification
testing for “A” class wet welding
procedures with DNV-GL. With a
full compliment of fillet as well as
groove weld procedures approved
by class, Subsea Global Solutions
is able to provide permanent weld
repairs with wet welded solutions.
Subsea Global Solutions continues
to grow organically and through
acquisition so we can remain “Your
One Source For Global Underwater
Solutions”. Today we are among
the largest Global Commercial
diving contractors supporting the
commercial maritime industry.
Feel free to contact any one of
our offices to open you up to this
organisation that prides itself on
being quality driven in everything
we do in and out of the water. We
will make the impossible – possible

A
bent propeller shaft
or rudder stock can
give many ship owners
sleepless nights, as it
means lay days and lost earnings.
At grounding, or when propeller
or rudder strikes an obstruction,
it often results in a bent propeller
shaft or rudder stock. As there is
often a long delivery time for a new
shaft it is good to look at the repair
options.
At MarineShaft in Denmark they
have developed a special technique
that enables them to carry out cold
straightening of bent propeller
shafts and rudder stock, which has
saved ship owners and underwriters
substantial time and money.
The cold straightening method is
favoured because of its accuracy
and quick delivery time. The most
common shafts can be straightened
within 24 to 48 hours, and for
only a fraction of the cost of a
replacement.
The cold straightening technique
is more than 40 years old and
has developed and improved
over time. The latest technology
allows straightening of shafts of all
sizes – from 20mm to more than
1,000mm in diameter and more
than 25 metres in length – as well
as straightening the shaft within
very narrow tolerances even more
precise than when the shaft was
manufactured.
Cold straightening does not affect
the metallurgy of the shaft, as it
actually releases stress from the
material. This differs from other
straightening methods, such as the
hot-spot method which uses heat
DRYDOCK 2014 15
and puts stress on the material,
affecting the metallurgy of the shaft.
Advantages associated with the cold
straightening method include the
following:
•
It is fully approved by all
major classification societies
•
It is considered to be a
permanent repair
•
The result is equivalent to a
new shaft
•
It is fast and cost effective
•
The metallurgy of the shaft
material is not adversely
affected
(The photos show a propeller shaft
before and after straightening.
Before straightening it was 300mm
bent and after straightening only
0,05mm)

R
udder Logistics SL, a
specialist in technical
and logistical services,
was founded by
experts with long-term experience
in the marine sector. We have
representatives in Barcelona,
Tarragona, Sagunto, Valencia, and
Algeciras, and can therefore operate
in the main ports on the Spanish
Mediterranean coast. It also has
worked with important customers
in collaborative relationships
around the world. This great variety
of customers and maritime works
has enabled the company to extend
their field of operations in most
countries.
Our raison d’être is to avoid, or
to minimise the period a vessel
is off-hire. Our services comprise
all aspects of ship repair, and we
coordinate all necessary steps
required during port calls.
Rudder Logistics Marine Services
& Repairs offers technical and
logistical marine services and
ship repairs, as well as auxiliary
services for the maritime industry
in Spain. The company was born
out of a need for an all-inclusive
service provider to meet the special
requirements of ship owners. It
recently obtained ISO 9001, ISO
14001 and ISO 18001 certification
major repair works on the Vil
Baltic’s cranes. The repairs consisted
of removing and replacing the
main bearings on three of the
four vessel’s cranes, under the
supervision of Lloyd’s Register
classification society.
Rudder Logistics is made up of 38
specialised maritime professionals.
We are known for our flexibility,
along with our qualified and
multilingual staff. We speak
English, German and Greek, and
we fully comply with occupational
risk prevention and the ruling
port regulations. Rudder Logistics
offers safe, fast services for both
ships and professionals, with safety
and quality being this company’s
priority.
The operation demanded a high
level of technical and logistical
expertise, given that the size
and weight of the parts involved
required the use of two heavy
cranes working simultaneously.
After the parts were replaced and
the onboard cranes installed, load
tests were carried out using 50- ton
water bags.
Rudder Logistics SL responds
rapidly to any emergency situation
affecting a vessel’s integrity, and
provides immediate assistance
through a full range 24-hour repair
service. This includes mechanical
works, electrical and electronic
repairs, cutting and welding, anchor
and anchor chain replacement
and hydraulic works, or any other
emergency repairs needed, as well
as supply of spare parts.
The operation involved more
than 30 professionals, working in
around-the-clock shifts.
Rudder Logistics SL also offers
solutions and specialised services
to cover the needs in areas such
as crew assistance, medical
services through our own medical
department, special material rental
such as ladders and anti-pollution
barriers or special tools and
machinery, logistics, boat and barge
services as well as security services
amongst many others.
A recent repair at the Port of
Sagunto highlights the company’s
capabilities. At the owner’s request,

regol Shiprepair Yard,
located in the ice-free
port of Kaliningrad,
is one of the most
dynamically developing shiprepair
yards in the North-West region of
Russia.
The yard provides shipowners
with a full range of services for
maintaining ships, in order to keep
their vessels in complete technical
readiness. Pregol is equipped with
the most modern equipment,
including three floating docks
with a 4,500 to 5,700 tons lifting
capacity, and it uses the latest ship
repair technologies. The company
maintains a pricing policy that is
tailored to the needs and abilities of
customers.
The yard repairs around one
hundred vessels of various types
every year. It has a highly qualified
staff with extensive ship repair
experience which allows it to
perform work of any complexity,
from emergency repairs to major
overhauls and modernisation works.
Pregol Shiprepair Yard is an active
developing company with all its
main production centres located in a
compact area within the yard. More
than thirty subcontractors allow
the yard to provide a full range of
shiprepair services. These include:
Repair and manufacture of ship
steel constructions, the manufacture
of hull fittings, repair and testing
of aluminium and grp boat hulls,
welding of cast iron and nonferrous
metals, blasting and painting
of ships hulls (St, Sa1 – Sa2.5),
cleaning and painting of drinking
water tanks (including sanitary
certificate issue), and cleaning of
ballast and fuel tanks.
Hatch covers, lifting equipment
and hydraulic systems repairs can
also be undertaken, along with
propulsion repairs, the repair of
mechanical equipment and piping
systems, radio, navigation and
electric equipment repairs, and
interior works.
“Pregol Shiprepair Yard is able
to deal with all kind of ship
repairs,” says Jan Lyder Nilsen,
Managing Director of HAV Ship
Management AS (Norway). “The
yard has good and professional
planning of the work to be dealt
with, and foremen and workers
have a high professional level.
The cooperation between our
attending superintendents and all
levels at the yard is conducted in
a friendly atmosphere. The yard
has, on several occasions, proved
that they are able to increase the
work force when there have been
unforeseen additional work items,
and by doing that always meet the
redelivery date at the yard. I hereby
give my best recommendation for
Pregol Shiprepair Yard, to anybody
in need of drydocking and repairs
for their vessels.”
