At St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Our Mission is Our Motivation
Sharing is one of the more difficult, yet absolutely critical, concepts we are taught as children.
We learn at a very young age that sharing our toys, our snacks and our friends makes for
a better world for everyone. We do a lot of sharing here at St. Louis Children’s Hospital,
and it’s all because of our simple yet profound mission: We do what’s right for kids.

Sam.

A Family’s Faith MakesAll The Difference
“Sam is a take-charge personality for a little guy, and he has challenges,” says Suzanne, of her
7-year-old son. “We still have medical issues that are being worked on with Sam, but we have
real confidence in Children’s Hospital, and we want others to know that.”
Sam, who has a dual-chamber pacemaker that sends regular readings to the Heart Center and keeps
his heart rhythm steady, became a patient almost as soon as he was brought home to Conway, Mo.,
from his native China at 4 years old. He joined Suzanne and Mark Luallin’s four biological daughters,
Hannah, Abby, Macy and Riley, ages 22-15, and their adopted son, William, 7, also from China.
The Luallins adopted William in 2007 after Suzanne saw his photo on an adoption website and
believed her family could make a difference in this little boy’s life. Will was blind and had his
eyes removed at Children’s by Dr. Larry Tychsen, the first step of the family’s incredible journey
with the hospital.

In 2008, the unimaginable happened when the Luallin’s home was destroyed by a tornado. “It was a
life-changing event for us,” Suzanne says. This led to their decision to adopt Sam, knowing how much it
would mean to William to have a brother from China like himself. The family also has plans to adopt
a third little boy later this year.
“My husband assured the doctors in China that we would do everything we could for Sam, and that
meant bringing him to Children’s,” says Suzanne. By September 2012, when Sam was not growing like
he should have been, he underwent a procedure in the Cardiac Cath Lab. The procedure revealed
that Sam’s arteries had never really grown, and his lungs were not fully developed. Sam’s doctor
decided to put a dual pacemaker on the outer portion of his heart due to the nature of his defect.
One thing that the Luallins have appreciated is how the hospital and those in the Heart Center have
helped Sam, who struggles with abandonment issues. “The doctors and staff have been amazing with
understanding all of our needs,” Suzanne says. “I can’t say enough about Children’s and everyone there.”

The Joe Buck Imaging Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital
provides safe care by using the lowest amount of radiation
necessary to get effective images, customizing scans based
on the weight and age of each child.
In the fall of 2012, the Center began using a Flash CT scanner
that images more quickly and uses up to 75% less radiation
than a standard adult CT.
