ABSTRACT
Weperformed
twoexperiments
toexamine
howthespatial
arrangement
oftwotexture
triangles,
large
andsmall,
affects
texture
laciness.
Thetexture
ofthetriangles
consisted
ofeither
horizontal
orvertical
lines.
With
thesmaller
triangle
included
intheinterior
ofthelarger,
thepercept
oftwopseudo-transparent
triangles
in different
depth
planes
occurs
forsomearrangements.
Twelve
undergraduates
ratedthestimuli
generated
ona color
CRTdisplay
according
totexture
laciness.
Thefirstexperiment
showed
that
thelocation
ofthesmall
triangle
inside
thelargeoneaffected
thelaciness.
Thesecond
experiment
showed
thattheeffect
ofthe
triangle
location
varied
depending
onthetexture
direction
ofthetriangles.
Theresults
demonstrated
a strong
coupled
effect
of
location
anddirection
oftexture
onperceived
laciness,
which
indicates
thatthelaciness
isdetermined
byperceptual
organization
ofthetextures
inthedisplay.
