JAY’s felt hiraeth for fifteen years.
What the f*** is ‘hiraeth’?
Torch Theatre Company
Charles Hawtrey was one of the leading
lights of the Carry On film franchise. Bubbly,
energetic and extremely funny Hawtrey was
one of the best known comedy actors of the
40s, 50s and 60s, but as his career waned, his
behaviour became more drunken, promiscuous
and eccentric, losing him many friends in an age
when male homosexuality in Britain was illegal
and punishable by a prison sentence.
This one man show regales stories of 50 years
in the film industry, his hilarious run ins with
Kenneth Williams and his disdain of the Carry
On producers as well as a complex relationship
with his mother.
Written by Dave Ainsworth, directed by Peter
Doran and performed by Jamie Rees, Oh Hello
has received four and five star reviews from
its recent tour and won the prestigious Laurel
Award at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe.
Roedd Charles Hawtrey yn un o hoelion wyth y
ffilmiau Carry On. Dyn afieithus, egnïol a doniol
dros ben oedd Hawtrey, ac un o actorion comedi
mwyaf adnabyddus y 40au, y 50au a’r 60au, ond
fel yr âi ei yrfa ar drai aeth i ymddwyn yn fwyfwy

1923: The War is over. While Clarissa Dalloway
prepares a party in Westminster, Septimus
Smith is diagnosed with shell-shock, their
memories and dreams magically intertwining
with those of 15 other desperate souls, this
hot blue day in June. Conjuring the hopes and
regrets of middle - and upper-class London,
this adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s celebrated
map of hearts, minds and memories offers
a compellingly feminine response to the
aftermath of the First World War.

‘The Revlon Girl’ is an original play based
on the events surrounding the Aberfan
Disaster of 1966.
Written by Neil Anthony Docking (Casualty,
Emmerdale), directed by Maxine Evans (Stella,
Call The Midwife) and set 8 months after the
tragedy, the play draws on the real life story
of a small group of bereaved mothers who
meet every Tuesday above a local hotel
to talk, cry and even laugh (without feeling
guilty).
Written and directed by Elton Townend Jones
(Christmas Gothic, The Unremarkable Death
of Marilyn Monroe). Performed by Rebecca
Vaughan (Jane Eyre, Female Gothic,
I, Elizabeth, Austen’s Women).
At one of their meetings, the women looked
at each other and realised how much they had
let themselves go. Afraid that people would
think them frivolous, they secretly arranged
for a representative from Revlon to come and
give a talk on beauty tips. The action takes
place on a rainy Tuesday night in a room
above the Aberfan Hotel.
1923: Mae’r Rhyfel ar ben. Tra mae Clarissa

Macbeth Director’s Cut
Apocalypso
Originally directed by Nigel Charnock for Volcano
in 1999, this furious two-hander takes the bloodiest
and most intense of Shakespeare’s plays and strips
it bare of its regal cushioning, evoking the tawdry
domestic world of contemporary serial killers in an
erotic and violent theatrical assault on the senses.
It is lyrical, apocalyptic, extreme and dangerous.
An immersive horror-comedy
experience like no other.

Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, Aakash
found conventional education at school very
challenging. As written language was so alien,
dance became his preferred mode of expression.
In this piece, Aakash and Australian choreographer
Lewis Major delve into the idea of warped and
exaggerated realities. In collaboration with Lewis
and Ars Electronica Futurelab (Linz, Austria), the
company explores how the misconceptions of
dyslexia can be revealed through visual design,
light, sound and movement.

the boundaries of narrative style dance using a
movement vocabulary which blends contemporary

Celebrating Chartism
Writing Competition
t ing
26
Newport is often viewed as playing a central role
in the development of the principles underlying
modern democracy in the UK through the city’s
pivotal role in the Chartism movement. In order to
connect Newport’s rich history to contemporary
audiences, The Riverfront is launching a new
competition designed to inspire and engage primary
school children across the city. In addition to
individual prizes for pupils, by entering, schools
have the opportunity to win an overall prize of £200
of book tokens. Winning entries will also be on
display to members of the public at The Riverfront
throughout November and December 2016.
Aimed at Key Stage 2, pupils are asked to present
a piece of creative writing, poetry or dramatic
interpretation reflecting on the 6 principles of
Chartism. Your school will receive an education
pack and links to further resources and be offered
the opportunity to arrange a school visit to The
Riverfront and the city centre to key areas of
interest.

RESURGENCE
MEDI 2 – 29 SEPTEMBER
HYDREF 3 – 29 OCTOBER
Josephine Sowden
Resurgence - Diverse
Manners Arts Group
Through her work, Sowden explores the idea that
masculine energy has ruled our world for the last (approx.)
6000 years.
Making reference to the Mabinogion, religious and famous
literacy texts (with specific reference to Eve and Pandora both blamed for all death, pain and suffering in the world),
Sowden demonstrates the role of storytelling - in its
various forms - in this process of oppression and by virtue
of the same media, calls for a remedy to this situation.
Josephine graduated from the University of Wales,
Newport in 2012 achieving a BA Hons in Photographic Art.
She has been awarded the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the
2013 National Eisteddfod as well as appearing in the Caitlin
Guide – an introduction to the top 40 most promising
artists in the UK.

MAINDEE POSTER EXHIBITION
Following on from last year’s ‘Beneath the Surface’
show, Diverse Manners Arts Group presents
Resurgence. The show’s optimistic title represents
a progression, exploring how things, once buried,
break through the surface.
Since the opening of Friars Walk, the people of
Newport have been frequently reminded that
they live in a ‘city on the rise’. This exhibition
takes a fresh look at the themes of new-birth and
regeneration.

Celebrating 400 years of ‘sound and fury’
Shakespeare Schools Festival is proud to
present a series of unique performances by
children from South Wales.
This is more than an event for the parents
of participating schools. All local schools
can see Shakespeare interpreted by children
of their own age. This is a wonderful
opportunity for schools to introduce
children to the language, magic and
possibilities of Shakespeare.
