The facility’s lobby area was renovated with new tile, paint, lighting and apparel sales area. A new one-of-a-kind blue playing surface was added in September of 2011, the first in college basketball drawing national attention from ESPN, Yahoo and CBS College Sports. The floor has also been featured in numerous magazines and trade publications since its installation. HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: CSUB has been tough to beat in the Icardo Center at the NCAA Division I level, recording an impressive 38-16 record vs. Division I opponents at home. HEAD COACH GREG MCCALL CSUB Athletic Director Jeff Konya announced Apr. 29, 2011, that Greg McCall was named head women’s basketball coach, removing the interim tag McCall operated under since the departure of previous head coach Tim La Kose in March 2011. McCall becomes the third head coach in program history. “We were looking for the right fit to maintain continuity in our program and Greg McCall was the overwhelming choice by our department and our student athletes,” said Konya. “His coaching experience as an assistant here at CSUB and as a head coach elsewhere, along with his ties to the community made this an easy decision.” McCall spent the previous four seasons as an assistant at CSUB helping guide to Roadrunners to a pair of postseason appearances including a 22-12 record in 2011. He was instrumental in recruiting student-athletes for the ‘Runners, along with scouting, game planning and player development. This will be McCall’s second stint as a head coach, as he previously led nearby Taft College for 10 seasons (1997-2007), helping restart the Cougars’ women’s basketball program and successfully leading them into the State Junior College Tournament. He won 98 games at Taft. He began his coaching career at CSUB under Pat Douglass, winning a NCAA Division II National Championship in 1997. He also played for Douglass and was a team captain on the Roadrunners’ 1991 Division II Final Four team. McCall’s oldest daughter, Dewanna, was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury in the first round of the 2009 WNBA draft with the fifth overall pick. Dewanna was a standout forward for Auburn University from 2006–09. Coach McCall is also the father to a daughter, Erica, and a son, Justin. 2011-12 CSUB WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK GORUNNERS.COM 3 THE BLUE FLOOR Nelligan Sports Marketing along with CSU Bakersfield Athletics has announced a new multi-year, six-figure corporate part- CSU tookthethe collegetobasketball media by storm September when they nershipBakersfield with McDonald’s, firstnational major corporation join the Roadrunners under their in new relationship with Nelligan. installed the nation’s first blue basketball court as a part of recent renovations to the CSUB Icardo The deal with the independently-owned and operated group of McDonald’s restaurants, is one of the largest corporate Center. sponsorships to date for Roadrunner Athletics and will include some very visible pieces, most notably, McDonald’s famous ‘Golden Arches’ logo on CSUB’s one-of- a-kind blue playing surface being installed today in the Icardo Center.
