Jim “Bushman” Sprague and Miss Viv, Region

Thanks for the show Bushman and Miss Viv!

September Already! IT will not be long and the
leaves will be turning and the landscape in the Ohio
Countryside will put on a Color Scheme Show that
will be absolutely breath taking. Is this why the
Month of September is so deadly for Motorcyclist in
Ohio? That is what the records show for the last 5
years, the Month of September is lethal to Motorcyclist in our great State, so if you are planning a fall

pavement and out of harm’s way for your photographs and be extra vigilant from this point forward
about Distracted Drivers and Deer and other Wild
and or Domestic Animals on the move due to rut
and or harvest time, especially at sunup or sundown. Why? Because we need each and every one of you to help us carry on the good fight,
besides, we have had enough heart aches for one year.
ABATE of Ohio, Inc., has a very busy calendar for the Month of September. Region 5 will
hold their Booty Run 9/3/11, Region 7 is putting on their big fun Grub-n-Suds Run 9/10/11,
Region 4 is holding their Rights Ride, Region 5 will hold their Toy Run, Region 9 the Pickaway
County 13th Anniversary Run and Region 14 has it 27th Annual Toy Run all on 9/17/11, what a
busy day. We are not finished yet, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation will be holding the 27th
annual Meeting of the Minds hosted by ABATE of Michigan 9/22-25/11 and Region 1 has its
Annual Help me Grow Run, good thing there are only 30 days in the Month of September, I do
not think I could handle much more fun in one Month.
Scott “Woody” Wood, is doing a fantastic job working the Statehouse, do not miss his
article, even though both Houses are on summer recess, Woody is still working it hard.
Every September at our bi-monthly State Board of Directors Meeting we open nominations for ½ of the Offices on the Board of Directors for election to a 2 year term, per By-laws

Just got back from Sturgis and

Del Hofer: Dealership owner and longer serving
member of the HD Dealer advisory board. Long
time racer, referee, and district congressman for
the AMA. Long time safety advocate.
Robert Craig “Evel” Knievel: If I need to tell you
who he is or what he’s done, please put down the
magazine and back away slowly.
Michael Prugh: Bike designer and builder. He took
a group of students from Western Dakota Tech to
build two one off custom bikes.
Gloria Tramontin Struck: A 65 year member of the
Motor Maids. At 85 she is an inspiration. After riding all 48 continental United States many times and
several countries in Europe, she spoke in her acceptance speech about looking forward to she and
her daughter riding cross country to celebrate her
91st birthday. Yes, a 91 year old saddling up and
going cross country. No “It’s too far to ride” here.
Mike and Margaret Wilson: Both have contributed
greatly to motorcycling. Mike as a racer both before
and after WWII. Margaret is a 60 year member of
the Motor Maids. They ran motorcycle dealerships
together for 25 years. Their individual accomplishments are great but they are viewed as a pair.
Rod Taylor: We know Rod and are grateful for all
he has done for motorcycling and safety training.

hear him blush all the way from Indy. We are proud
of you Rod.

3rd reading and voting on Constitution motions made at the January 2011 BOD meeting will be at the May 2011 meeting:
Motion 72:
Change Article 5, Section 4, Paragraph B to “A voting member of the BOD who holds more than one voting BOD office

one time for each BOD voting office or proxy held.”
Eliminate Article 5, Section 5, Paragraph G. “Votes from

counted separately from the vote made in the commission of
their held BOD office.”
By adding “or proxy” to Paragraph B, Paragraph G becomes
redundant.
Motion 73:
Clarify Article 5, Section 5, Paragraph H. “The proxy holder
must vote as directed, unless new information unknown by
the voting BOD member at the time the proxy was issued is
presented and the proxy holder believes the information
would have changed the voting BOD member’s direction,
had it been known. Then, the proxy holder must “abstain

Add Article 5, Section 5, new paragraph. “A proxy is not

The AMA will alert you when your federal lawmakers schedule a
public meeting. You may also contact your lawmaker's local office
or visit their website to inquire about their public August schedule.
To look up your lawmakers' contact information, visit the AMA
Issues & Legislation page and enter your zip code in the "Find
Your Officials" box.
For details on how to prepare for a town hall meeting, schedule
a meeting with your elected officials, and more, visit the AMA Get

Lawmakers are elected by you and work for you. They care
about your concerns -- the concerns of their constituents. Take
advantage of this recess to meet your lawmakers, face to face,
and allow them the opportunity to get to know you, the riding community, and motorcyclist-related issues. Encourage your fellow
riders to join you in your efforts.

Great opportunity for your legislators to get to know you .
Each August, the U.S. Congress takes a recess from Capitol

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) urges riders to
utilize the upcoming August recess as an opportunity to meet their
legislator and have them get to know you and the riding community.
This August is an excellent time to get to know your lawmakers. Please take advantage of this opportunity to meet with your
legislators, discuss issues important to you, and offer yourself as a

Ever been to
Michigan? There are
some great vacation
spots, especially on
the west coast of
Michigan. My favorite
is Crystal Lake. The
problem with vacationing in Michigan for
me is that dog gone
helmet law. They
have a bill right now
that gives adults the

right to choose
whether or not they
want to wear helmets.
This bill is S.B. 291.
The bill has been passed
by both House and Senate and is only waiting on Gov. Rick
Snyder’s signature to become law. ABATE of Michigan has put
out a call to action asking people to let Gov. Snyder know they
support the bill. Input from outside of their state would help a lot.
That input from other states is seen as potential money coming
into the state from tourists.
Not only has ABATE of Michigan put out a call to action, the
MRF, KMA/KBA, and the C.O.I.R. branch of the Ohio Defender’s
has put out calls to action on this issues. On our website,
abate.com, there is a link and instructions to write Gov. Snyder.
The letter can be short and simple and still be effective. See
sample below:
Sen. Bill Coley 4th District which is Butler County

Sen. Kris Jordan 19th District which is Delaware, Knox,
Morrow, Richland, part of Ashland counties

Sen. Joe Schiavoni 33rd District which is Mahoning, Carroll,

Sen. Nina Turner 25th District Cleveland [email protected]
If you would like to send them a letter in the mail, all senators in
this committee have offices in the statehouse and can be mailed
to:

Dear Governor Snyder,
Senate Bill 291 has been passed by Michigan’s
House and Senate. This bill is waiting on your
signature to become law. This bill gives adults
the right to choose to wear or not wear a helmet
in Michigan. I support this bill and ask that you
sign it into law.

Our neighbors need our help. Let’s give them a hand.
Back in Ohio, S.B. 92 (ROW bill) is still rolling. There is a
meeting being scheduled for later this month with interested
parties of the bill. Hopefully we can iron some things out before
the next committee hearing. I need some help with influencing
the committee on this bill. I am working on an organized plan to
divide the state among committee members. I am waiting right
now due to the fact that one of the committee members has
stepped down from the senate to take one of the governor’s
cabinet positions. Her position on the committee has not been
decided yet. Below is a listing of Highway and Transportation
Committee members and info. If your senator is not on the list,
pick the one that is in your ABATE Region or closest one to it,
and email them.

(CPSC). HR 2715, sponsored by Mary
Bono-Mack (R-CA), takes aim at reforming the issue of banning youth products
due to lead content percentages. Also
known as the Consumer Product Safety
Commission Improvement Act (CPSCIA),
this bill addresses a number of issues; but
first and foremost is the language to fix the
lead law.

HR 2715 specifically addresses the issue
of youth motorcycles, other off road vehicles, and snowmobiles, effectively exempting them from the lead certification

the Senate and House by unanimous
consent in both chambers. The MRF applauds Congress for addressing this import issue.

"Call to Action" Motorcycle Helmet Law
Modification in Michigan
This release is being sent to you at the request of ABATE of Michigan. Please direct any questions or comments to ABATE of Michigan
From: Vince Consiglio, President, ABATE of Michigan
ABATE of Michigan would like the help of all motorcyclists in their
fight for freedom. Senate Bill 291 passed the Michigan Senate in
late June. We are asking all rights activists to send a post card to
Michigan's Governor, Rick Snyder, urging him to support motorcycle
helmet choice for adults. A postcard from a "FREE" state may help
him realize that Michigan loses motorcycle money every day of the
summer with a mandatory helmet law. Governor Snyder prides
himself on being all about business and helping business. Please
urge Governor Snyder to support adult choice.
The legislation will need the President’s signature before becoming
law. The MRF encourages you to contact the President and ask
him to sign HR 2715 into law.

Hi Friends,
I hope everyone is
having a safe riding season. The weather on the
whole has been pretty
good. When we started

doing our pre-ride

checks, don’t let your
guard down now. Stay
alert!
We have a new member out talking to Driver's
Ed classes and they are doing a great job. We need more
members to get involved in this way.
Last Sunday I rode to Region 1, Hopedale, picking up my
riding sidekick, Harley, in Delaware. We attended their region
meeting and talked about Safety & Ed. I hooked Cindy up
with all the info to
start Motorcycle Awareness in another Driver's Ed school.
Good Luck. Thanks Larry and all for a good afternoon.
This last week we lost a brother and we will miss him. Dale
Barnhiser was my first customer to purchase a Look Twice
Save a Life sign. It's been in front of his house since then,
and as long as Deb is in that house, the sign will be there
reminding us of Dale. Please, if you don't have a sign, get
one.
I just got my reservation for Meeting of the Minds Sept 22
and 23 in Romulus, MI. I would like to see a good turn-out of
members because we all need to know how it works for 2013
when Ohio will be hosting it. You will learn a lot about how
the Rights Movement works. It is about 1 hour from Toledo
so it should be no more than a 4 hour trip from the furthest
point in Ohio.
Last of all, we as ABATE members need to get our 2012
calendar ready. Everyone needs to start planning for the first
weekend of February to go to the State Seminar in Columbus. This is very important and very fun.
The Awareness Ride is the first Saturday in May and if we
can get every person who rides, ABATE member or not, at
the ride, that will create awareness to watch for motorcycles
on the roads. And finally
we need to start thinking about June Jam. We must make it a
big event because that is what supports us for most of the
year. And it is fun!
We support a lot of charities through the year and June
Jam makes it possible for us to survive.
Thanks to all. If you don't have a sign out front, get one. It's
your duty.

President Barack Obama signed a
bipartisan consumer safety bill on August 12 that exempts youthsized motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 that bans
children’s products that contain lead.
H.R. 2715, introduced by U.S. Representatives Mary Bono
Mack (R-CA) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), passed nearunanimously in the House 421-2 on Aug. 1 and was approved by
unanimous consent by the Senate later that day. The measure
excludes kids’ off-road vehicles from the overly-broad CPSIA lead
certification rules, which previously prohibited their sale due to
lead content of components such as batteries and brakes.
“This law is a win-win for American consumers and the

Shootin’

Happy Birthday
to me,
Some of you
might have already
gone through this,
but I’m turning 60
later this month. The
other day at a swap
meet I met a guy
who is eighty-eight
years old, which
made me feel a
whole lot better
about turning 60!
LOL (laugh out loud).
He still rides and has
ridden most of his
life, but now he rides
a trike because the
[email protected] weight of a big two
wheeler was botherby Bummer ing his legs.
He reminded me
so much of a dude
named Pappy whom I’ve written about many times. In fact I was
thinking just that when, believe it or not, I noticed he had “Pappy”
on a patch on his vest! I almost LOST it! Of course I told him
about “my” Pappy, and he replied that the members of his riding
club recently gave him that name just because he was the oldest.
But the co-incidences got even weirder when I found out they had
many other things in common besides name and age.....it just blew
me away.
Anyway, he told me about a bike he has stashed away in his
barn.... “It’s a 1911 Yale one cylinder Bummer....my first motorcycle. I’ve kept it all these years. It’s got 26” wheels on the damned
thing. I got it in 1940 and it was an antique then.” Then he went on
to tell me about something I’ve never even heard of before....
Maybe a lot of the really old bikes used these in their day, and it
won’t be news to those of you who know this, but instead of a round
inner tube, he used a straight rubber tubular cylinder that was
crimped on both ends. He’d wrap the un-inflated straight tube
around the inside of the tire, overlapping the ends. Then he’d
mount the tire and inflate it through the tube’s valve that he poked
through the rim just like a regular tube. One size fit most.
He musta read my mind, because he immediately went on to
say, “You’d think the tire would sorta kerflop on the pavement every
time the wheel rotated, wouldn’t ya? But it didn’t. It worked great,
but of course that bike only goes about 30 MPH.”
Man, the things ya learn when ya listen to us old people.
I was in my garage the other day cleaning up my bench. As I
put tools away, I paused to ponder on my grandfather’s old machinist’s tool box. It has his name, “Lewis Baldwin” engraved on a little
plaque on the lid from when he kept it in the shop where he worked.
I had to laugh when I remembered an incident that happened a
long time ago.....
I’ve had an old friend named Deeter for so long that I don’t even
remember how we met. I DO know that he’s known ALL of my
wives (which goes back a bit) and was around when my first son
was born 34 years ago. I further know that if for whatever reason I
were to be dropped from a helicopter buck-naked in the middle of a
desert with nothing on me except a cell phone, the first person I’d
call would be Deeter. And he’d come. He’s that kind of person,
and that kind of friend.
Anyway, one day long ago he asked me about the old multidrawer tool box, and I told him about it being from my grandfather
who was a machinist among many other things. I told him about
my father telling me how he and Gramps used to drive truck to-
gether back in the 1930’s after Dad got out of the Army. How Dad
found a job in a factory which soon went on strike. And how when
a bus load of strike-breakers showed up, one of the bat wielding
thugs that got off the bus turned out to be Dad’s own father
(Gramps). Being a union member all my life, I asked Dad, “How
could Gramps even think about doing that?”
“Bum,” he replied, “It was the Great Depression. Ya did what ya
had to do to feed and take care of your family. Your grandfather
just didn’t know that I had recently started that job.”
“Well, what happened?”
“We both just looked at each other and said, Screw THIS! He
dropped his baseball bat, I dropped the sign I was carrying, and
then we walked together into a bar across the street and had a
beer.”
I went on to tell Deeter how Dad then got hired by an orchestra
playing a stand-up bass, and how Gramps used to go watch them
perform in ballrooms all over the state with his wife (Granny, the
woman who gave me the name “Bum”) and my mom. Finally, I told
him how Gramps and Dad both worked for a few years in Warren’s
Packard plant making those beautiful old luxury automobiles, and
that this was his toolbox.
Over the years Deeter mentioned over and over how he’d
REALLY like to have that toolbox. He’d say, “Bummer, this is a
Journeyman Machinist’s toolbox. Hell, YOU don’t even know what
some of these tools are used for.” And he was right. But since it
was passed down to me, and even had Gramps name on it, I
wouldn’t even consider parting with it even if it had (for the most
part) become just a “bench ornament”.
The years flew by and I was probably about 50, when I realized
that I hadn’t updated my will for a long time. Having been divorced
a few times, AND my situation changing on what seemed like a
daily basis, I was thinking about doing just that......when at our annual ABATE seminar I was told that an attorney was present who
would prepare a will for members for free. Now, “free” is just about
always a good thing to me, so I took advantage of it and sat down
with him to “Get ‘er done”.
Later in the evening I walked up to Deeter who was standing in
the hallway bullshitting with a few people. I told him how I had
revised my will, and went on to tell him that he’s mentioned in it.
He solemnly took a swig of Pabst’s Blue Ribbon. Then he took a
hit off one of the Old Gold cigarettes he’s always smoking and read
the will that I had thrust into his hands. After a minute of reading it
his eyes widened and he looked up at me to exclaim, “YOUR
ASHES??? You left it up to me to decide what to do with your
damned ASHES?? Hell! I thought you were leaving me your
grandfather’s TOOLBOX!!”
Eventually I had the will revised yet again, and with my sons
having grown into men, the new executor (my son Jason) asked me
if maybe I should consider changing it once more.
“Dad, maybe ya might wanna reconsider this part....”
“Why? What’s that? Show me.” And he pointed to one of the
clauses.
“Well, it’s just that I’d appreciate having your ashes....that’s all.
Did Deeter ever tell ya what he planned on doing with them?”
“No. I just assumed they’d be tossed on a little road trip, memorial run or something.”
“Well, if ya don’t mind....give them to me. I’d like to keep them.”
“It sure as hell ain’t gonna make no difference to ME. And I’m
sure he ain’t gonna mind. I’ll just tell Deeter of the change in
plans.” And I did. (What I didn’t tell him though, was that I also told
Jason to give Deeter the toolbox, but only if that was okay with both
him and his brother Ben. He said he’d have to talk to Ben. So, if
you’re reading this Deeter, ya gotta talk to them about it LOL)
I stopped at a garage sale the other day. I really don’t need
anything these days, but I did keep an eye out for a big wooden
rolling pin. I seem to have mysteriously lost mine last time I got
divorced. Of course I rarely used it, but I DO make great biscuits
from scratch. I guess the rolling pin was the price I paid for my

Motorcycle Ohio Training Class Registration Starts on February 7, 2011
Rider Course Site Information provided by:
Robert D. Secrest, Coordinator,
Motorcycle Ohio
In case you or someone you know or love is
considering riding a motorcycle legally in the
state of Ohio, or if that person has ridden for
years, but never bothered to get a motorcycle
endorsement, or if you'd just like to take a class
to find out what it's like to ride a motorcycle,
here's your chance.
The state of Ohio sponsors a program called
Motorcycle Ohio, which offers the "Basic Rider
Course", a 3-day motorcycle training course,
with 12 hours of on-motorcycle instruction and 4
hours of classroom instruction.
Passing this course gets you a waiver from
having to pass the state's on-cycle test, which
some say is quite difficult on "large" motorcycles.
The course costs $25 and signups begin in
February. Classes fill very quickly as this
course is extremely popular and inexpensive.
Go to www.motorcycle.ohio.gov for more
information. Click on "Basic Rider" to register or
find out more on the basic rider course.
The experienced rider course (ERC) is also
available and is a fun one-day on-cycle course
for riders endorsed for a minimum of one year.
The Advanced Rider course - Sport bike
techniques (ARC-ST) is a challenging one-day
course aimed at improving riding skill by utilizing
some tactics common in riding sport bikes, but is
not limited to sport bike riders. I took the course
last summer and had a blast, and learned a
surprising amount in such a short time.

and the sensor didn’t detect me. After waiting through at least
two cycles, I turned left on the red and got stopped by a cop. Is
there a law that lets bikes turn left on red when the sensor doesn’t work? Or have I just heard it is generally acceptable?
Tired of watching
your Freedom
slowly disappear?
A:
There is no provision in Indiana Code that allows a
motorcycle to turn left on red, so technically, if a rider does that
they are violating the law and can be cited. Practically speaking,
many of our friends in law enforcement say that the cop would
have to be a real hard case to write somebody up if they follow
the "generally accepted" procedure of waiting through one complete cycle (meaning you were there for two cycles) and then
proceeding with caution. We have not lobbied for this as we are
reluctant to ask for "special privileges" for motorcycles. However,
we do want to be treated equally and expect to be recognized by
traffic control devices. We have done extremely well in contacting local jurisdictions when a sensor does not function for motorcycles and meeting with them to re-adjust. I hope this helps.
Ready to do
something
about it?
Thanks, Jay!

We Thank You in advance for your Support!
Okay, you have all read the articles in this issue regarding HR 2715. Something I
found interesting that was not in any of the articles is how our US Representatives voted from here in Ohio. Here is how they voted on the Lead Law:

I hope you find this information helpful in thanking
those who voted in favor of this bill. In addition to
writing to my rep, I also found it imperative to let
Representative Kucinich know how I felt on his nay
vote.
Thank you to all of our U.S. Representatives who
voted in favor of this bill. There are now many young
riders who will be able to enjoy this sport and learn
of the great camaraderie that will be built there. If
any of you have little ones that this has effected, this
would be a great opportunity for them to write the
representatives also. There is a lot to be said about
“out of the mouths of babes”.
Also, ABATE thanks all who participated in contacting your representative regarding this issue.

Greetings Earthlings,
I missed our July 10th regional meeting, but was told that the location for our 19th annual Region Zero October Hog Roast has been
changed from Carlton’s Harley Davidson in Mantua to the spacious
grounds of Pooch’s Tavern in Mecca on the Mosquito Lake causeway (Rt. 88). This year it’ll be held on Saturday, Oct.1st (when we’ll
be having most of the events including the food) and continue on
through Sunday the 2nd with overnight primitive camping for those
who might wanna crash there Saturday night, so bring your tents if
you’ve a mind to.....breakfast will be served.
Included in your very reasonable gate fee will be: A bike rodeo...A
bike show...Assorted vendors...Music and various other entertainment. Take all that and combine it with great roasted pig and other
foods to stuff yourselves with (and plenty of it), and ya got the makings for a GREAT old fashioned biker feast! By the time you read
this, more details will have been made clear. For the first time in 19
years this is an entirely new location and a new format, so let’s try to
support it. Perhaps we can return to the huge crowd we used to get
for this event almost 20 years ago.
Our July 16th meeting at the Alumni Inn in Girard went great. A
good crowd showed up and was given a great legislative report by
Lion, during which he said that the diagonal motorcycle parking bill
initiated through the direct efforts of Mah/Trum County ABATE is
now law!
This bill states that motorcycles (but still not cars) can now legally
park by backing into a diagonal parking space (the slanted ones that
a lot of the smaller communities have) throughout the state of Ohio,
instead of awkwardly parking front-first, which is usually slightly
downhill and a real bitch to back up out of. And it’s VERY unsafe to
have to be man-handling your bike backwards, up-hill and out into a
lane of traffic, especially if you’re parked between two vans or whatever. In the past, anyone who parked their bike by backing in was
breaking the law, though I doubt most of us even knew it. Though the
old law was rarely enforced to ticket motorcycles, it is never good to
be at the mercy and discretion of the police. This is big people!! We
can say without any exaggeration that we’ve actually changed the
laws of the state of Ohio. This sort of thing is EXACTLY why we urge
lawmakers to come speak at our meetings. State Rep. Tom Letson
introduced this bill primarily because he was the guest speaker at
one of our meetings in Bristolville a few years ago where we told him
the details of the issue, prompting him to introduce the bill.
If anyone ever asks you “Why is ABATE necessary?” or says,
“ABATE is the helmet law folks.” you should point out things like this
to them. Be VERY proud of this accomplishment!! Well done! We
might have even helped to prevent a few accidents.....and that’s

Hamilton, Butler and Warren County
Hello Butler, Hamilton, and Warren Counties....
Clermont County is having their “Booty Run” on September 3rd; information is on the Region web site.
The Hamilton County Poker Run, normally held on the last weekend
of September, has been put on hiatus this year.
We are currently debating and voting on combining all of the individual county meetings in Region 5 into a single region meeting; the
proposed location would be around the Lebanon/Kings Mills area.
During the August meeting, a vote was taken and the result was in
favor of the single region meeting. There will be two more votes: September and October.
Our meetings start at 1:00 PM on the first Sunday of each month at
the former Charlie’s Throttle Stop now known as “Win, Place, or
Show” located at 7121 Dixie Hwy., Fairfield, OH 45014 (entrance is on
Mack Rd.). Their phone number is 513-874-6111 in case you need
directions.
If you cannot make the meetings, you can contact me anytime about
anything.
I can be reached by phone at 513-561-4745 and by email at [email protected].
Done writing, out riding....

Hello,
Wow were did summer go? It seems like two blinks of an eye ago it
was 90 degrees. I hope our Booty Run is well attended, it is our last
ho rah of summer.
Then we know what comes down the road after all of this, yes, ABATE
election time for officers. We need new people to step up and be officers so come to a meeting step up introduce yourself. You might think
well, there are people already doing a great job and I am not needed.
Let me tell you, we need help. I need help ASAP. Plus new people
bring new ideas to keep the organization fresh and officers at the
county or region level may want to move up to a state level position so
help them make that happen.

Region 6
Hello Region 6,
I just can't believe it's September. I have to say everyone did a
great job this year on all the county runs. We have also been doing quite a bit of networking by getting groups together to support
other events. This was something that was discussed in January.
The plan and the work are paying off. I like to think of it as paying
it forward. Just don't forget to remind people that we supported
them. So they can also support us. I'll be honest here. We have all
rode to help kids, cancer, pets, and family. Those are some awesome causes. They are true feel good and helpful runs. However,
look at the mess our country is in due to the fact that we were too
busy helping other people and now we need help and who is helping us? This can happen to a country as well as an organization. It
is a proven fact that more people are reactive as opposed to proactive. We have this nasty tendency to think it will happen to
someone else and not us. All I have to say is it can and if we don't
watch out for ourselves it will. I am not being all negative Nancy
on this. My main reason for stating this is to keep this fresh in
everyone’s mind. We all know sometimes the picture just gets too
big and you can miss important details.
Greene County had its last run of the season, the S.L.U.T.
Run. I was not at this event. I was at the AMA Vintage Motorcycle
Days a state event for ABATE. I did receive a report from Mo Griffin Deputy Director that everything had gone well and everyone
had a great time. Thanks Mo for doing a great job in keeping it
together in my absence. I knew you could do it. The next Greene
County meeting is set for September 24th. @ 4:00 at Melissa's
P&G 5440 Intrastate Dr. Fairborn.
Miami County helped with Joyce and Larry Smith (both Miami
County Officers) annual Amber Detrick Memorial benefit. This was
one heck of a good time. We got to meet a lot of great new people, listen to some great music, and dance our butts off. The Covington VFW was very helpful in making this event possible with
staffing, food, and the use of their property. So I as well as several
others would like to say thanks once again. The next Miami
County meeting is set for September 24th @ 10:00 at Heck Yeah
in Piqua.
Clark County had its run for the season the Run for Your
Rights “Treasure Hunt”. As of right now that hasn't happened yet.
So I'll do a follow up next month. The next Clark County meeting is
set for September 24th. @ 1:00 at Honey Creek in New Carlisle.
***September Region Meeting is CANCELLED*** I will catch
everyone at their county meetings or meet with County Officers
before their meetings to pass on current information.
Before I close I would like to mention a very important person
to Region 6, our Region Treasurer Toni Wendel. She has and is
still doing an awesome job in keeping our money straight here in
the region. I was blown away that she would ask me if she needed
to go do her report in the middle of an after-party. The woman
never stops! So once again Toni thanks for doing what you do.

Unfortunately, I can't report on our T.S.I.A. Event in time to
get this report out, but hope everyone who went, had a great time
and those who didn't go...SORRY ABOUT YOUR LUCK!
By the time you read this, our Grub N Suds will be here and
hopefully we can all see each other there, being this is our last
event for the year.
Hey, Wood and Lucas Counties.... Let's get us going again!!!
On Sept 17th (Sat) at 3 p.m. there will be a brief ABATE meeting
at the Pioneer Inn, 6751 Fremont Pike (St. Rt. 20) Perrysburg, Oh.
(formally the Mind Set) Now owned by none other, than our own
Region Web Mistress, Jacquie Dorring!!!!! Following the meeting,
there will be the Driver’s Ed Motorcycle Safety movie that we show
to new drivers. The movie will be hosted by Jack Bradfied and
Mike Stock. This is to show our members exactly what ABATE is
doing to protect us on the roads. Let Us show support to our
“Leaders” by attending this meeting. Also, bring along a nonmember, who may want to know what ABATE is about. Jacquie
has the best wings around...So come hungry!!
Our ABATE is surviving alright, but remember, there is
strength in numbers, so we need to keep growing. Let's not let our
leaders fight our battles by themselves! Let's help them anyway
we can, even if it's through membership only. Seems as if I'm
always talking membership in my articles, but if ya think of it ...if
only a few people fought OUR fight without back-up, we would
lose for sure, by lack of support. The freedoms we enjoy, are from
hard fought battles, not just in ABATE, but in our history.
It is our government’s job to keep freedom for us without infringing on our current freedoms. Some times their "authority" may
not seem right or fair to us and sometimes it isn't. That's why we
have accountability for their actions. Just because it looks good,
doesn't mean it is good! There are counterfeit freedoms, where we
feel that we are free to do whatever the hell we want, but we must
remember to respect others' freedoms, that We may be taking
away for our own selfish reasons.
Our mission as ABATE members is to support what we believe in, not necessarily to run meetings or hold positions, but to
show the authorities, by our numbers, our voting strengths , our
beliefs, to respect us! Don't mess with our freedoms! We are the
people who put them in that position, and we can take them out!
I really hate being political, but we must educate ourselves at
their level, so we are not followers, but leaders.
I've noticed at a lot of our Sandusky County and Region meetings that a topic may come up, that cannot be rectified
on the spot, so.....we table it till the next meeting. All too many
times, that topic is forgotten, not investigated or damn it!!!! Tabled
again! I understand our fearless leaders don't have the answers to
everything, but these topics need to be addressed and answered
and put to rest. Leaders...delegate these tabled topics to others, if
need be! Thanks.
Get Busy!! (Love ya Aimee)

Hellooo, Region 8ers,
So has everyone else been busy trying to cram their entire
summer into the last couple of months we have left also? Busy,
busy, busy.
I took a ride up to the AMA Vintage cycle days on July 23rd
and met up with the crew to help spread the word, sold some
raffle tickets, and checked out the swap meet, now I didn't get to
see it all but I'm pretty sure that anything that’s ever been made
with an engine and 2 or 3 wheels was either there or parts for it
was, pretty cool!
Speaking of Raffle tickets, I'd like to thank everybody that
bought one off me or helped sell them, great job!
Well I know that Rusty, Becky, Jim, Rose, Lonnie, and Cindy
was able to run off to Sturgis and have fun, I hope anyone else
that was able to go had a great time also.
September looks like our Regional meeting is at the Gambrinus Inn in Canton on the 11th and October's meeting is at the
Carrollton Eagles on the 9th. Also the Carroll County home is
holding a rally on the 8th at the Eagles and would like our participation and help, please contact me I'll know more by the time you
read this. Don't forget our Halloween Spooktacular at the Somerdale Inn is October 15th with Region 16 and Electric Mud. And if
anybody sees Steve Nicholson tell him we missed him at the July
meeting.
So till next time have fun and be safe because it is that time of
the year we all jump up in front of our TVs and yell GO
STEELERS!
Ride on,

Region Nine
Hello Region Nine;
Well, it seems that the summer is speeding by at warp speed,
September 2011
and I'm up against another deadline for this article. I am late as
usual, so here goes.
There are the usual topics to cover, such as the ROW legislation. The big change is that the bill has been introduced in a different committee-the Transportation Committee, instead of the Judiciary. This means that there is a different cast of characters we
have to contact, which may be both good and bad. The bad is we
are basically starting over, but the good is that we are starting
over with a fresh set of minds that might be more receptive to
what we are trying to accomplish. Anyway, the committee members are: Tom Patton (Chair), Frank LaRose (Vice Chair), Jason
Wilson (Ranking Minority Member), Bill Coley, Karen Gilmore, Kris
Jordan, Peggy Lehner, Joe Schiavoni, and Nina Turner. These
are the Senators we need to contact to ask their support for SB
92. Please contact them via snail mail, or email and let them know
why you support the bill and why they should also. Let them know
you are a registered voter, and ask for their support. If you are
unsure of what to say, go to the ABATE website
(www.abate.com), and click on legislation. I believe there are
some talking points to help you compose your letter or email. A
phone call also works, if you do not want to write or email.
Since this is being read at the end of August, or early September, the Foundation Bike Raffle has happened. I am assuming the
enough tickets were sold that the motorcycle and trailer were
awarded. The lucky winner will be posted in next month's article.
A wrap-up of the Franklin County Night Poker Run will also be
in the next edition.
Please don't forget Pickaway County's Poker Run on the 17th,
starting at Woody's Place on Court Street. Contact Jeff Bowersock
for more info at 614-306-2570.
The Twenty-Fifth Franklin County Toy Run will be happening
on November 12th. Please come to a meeting to get info on collecting donations for the fund-raiser/auction. The deal is the same
as in years past, meet at Toys "R" Us, ride to the fire house to
drop off your toys, and then on to Screamin Willie's Remember,
we have raised a lot of money and toys over the past 25 years for
the Firefighters, so lets make this one the biggest and best yet. As
usual ,we will need volunteers for the various activities going on,
so please come to a meeting to get more info.
Another topic I need to cover is the Federal Government's
proposal to raise the Ethanol level in gasoline to 15%. Why is this
important to motorcyclists? The increase to 15% will make engines burn hotter. This will not be good for today’s engines, and if
they adopt the 15%, future engines will have to be re-engineered,
which will probably mean cost increases. Once again, we need to
contact our legislators, and ask them not to support the increase
to 15%. Maybe if the Federal subsidy for Ethanol were eliminated,
this issue would disappear. In the meantime, if you are looking for
pure gas, you can usually find it at marinas, if you happen to be
cruising around, keep that in mind.
Our Brothers and Sisters in Michigan need our help. They are
close to getting a Freedom of Choice bill to the Governor's desk.
Please email him at:[email protected], and ask him to
sign this bill `if it reaches his desk.
Yes, Virginia, there will be a June Jam 2012, June 22 to 24@
Kaeppner Woods. The Jam committee has had two productive
meetings, with a lot more to follow. Preliminary details will be in
this edition of the Outspokin’. Please keep in mind that the Jam is
THE FUNDRAISER for the State, and as such, we need to support it, if the State Office is to have funding for the year. If you
have any ideas about the Jam, please contact the State Office, or
myself.
Speaking of contacting me, I finally have my [email protected] email working again. Once again, if you sent
me an email to that address, and I did not respond, it was because I wasn't receiving my messages. Once I got it reestablished, I got emails that were 1 to 2 months old. Thanks to
Outspokin’
33
JR Gantner for the assist in getting it back up to speed. I believe
everything is working as it should.
Amazingly, it is time for nominations for Regional and County
Offices. These will start in at the September meetings, so if you
would like to participate in the running of your organization, please
step up.
The September meetings will be a combined Regional meetinglocation yet to be determined. Look for email and snail mail reminders.
Well, that’s about all I can think of-I'm sure I'm forgetting something. If I did, I'll cover it at a meeting, so drag you ass to one. See
you there.
