Grosse Pointe Crisis Club Newsletter Celebrating 54 Years of Helping Those in Need Volume 44 September/October 2010 Number 5 GROSSE POINTE CRISIS CLUB COMEDY NIGHT 2010 OCTOBER 19th The Grosse Pointe Crisis Club Comedy Night is back by popular demand. This year, making an encore appearance is Mark Knope. From The President Greetings and welcome to the last quarter of 2010. Unbelievable as it seems, we’re on the downward slope of what has been a successful year. First, I want to recognize Steve Graus and Ted Eikhoff for spearheading another successful Kotcher’s Kapers Golf Outing. Special thanks go to Jim Maniere who again secured over forty Tee/Hole sponsors which made the outing a financial success. Steve, Ted and Jim not only continued our tradition but, more importantly, assured the continued viability of an event that brings members and guests together for comaradie , fun and a great value to the participants and the Club. Please take a look at page 6 and acknowledge those businesses and individuals who contributed their time and resources to make this outing a success. I sincerely hope that you will take note of our sponsors when you make a purchase, whether it be an automobile, a gift of jewelry or the selection of a financial counselor. Our Tee/Sponsors support our Club and I encourage you to support them. The Fall season kicks off with our always popular Comedy Night, this year featuring Mark Knope. Mark last entertained the Continued on Page 10 Over the years, Mark has had the opportunity of working with some of the biggest names in the stand-up biz, like Brett Butler, Kevin James, Richard Lewis, Bobcat Goldthwaite and Tommy Chong. He has appeared on Comedy Central’s “Stand-Up, Stand-Up,” “Nightshift” on FOX, and “America’s Funniest People.” His style is highenergy with lots of sound effects and quirky facial expressions, and incorporates some of the best celebrity impersonations to be heard! This years’ show will be hosted by the Clubs’ resident master of ceremonies Rich Higgenbottom, commonly found entertaining at Joey’s Comedy Club/Kickers Ultra Lounge in Livonia, MI. Past attendees have said comedy night is “the best value on the eastside”; generous cocktails, great food and excellent entertainment in a social setting with friends, family and business associates. The Crisis Club is promoting couples attendance so please make every effort to attend. A flyer is included with this newsletter. Please confirm your attendance at the event and contact Ted Eikhoff as soon as possible. 2010 Board of Trustee Candidates John Bogdzewicz John Kotcher Nick Sharku Robert J. Balcerzak – Assistant Crisis Case Director Case 1400 Investigators: B. Balcerzak – Don Dungan A Crisis Club member asked the Club to help a single mother of three children. The 42-year old Roseville mother never had a problem raising her children until she permanently lost her job. She has always coped in spite of suffering from rapid cycling bipolar disorder and severe depression. Her unemployment benefits ended, pushing her over edge. She started using drugs causing her to end up in rehabilitation and losing her children. A case worker has verified her recovery process and is assisting to reunite her with her children. The Crisis Club paid one month’s rent and approved the purchase of clothes, food and personal and household items from Meijer. Case 1403 Investigators: J. Oreson - D. Vormelker A 52-year old Detroit woman was also referred by a Crisis Club member. The single woman, as a substitute teacher, had no insurance to cover back surgery for five herniated discs. Her mother has been keeping her afloat for the last two years but has financial problems of her own. She is planning to return to teaching this fall. The Crisis Club made three payments for her modest rent. Case 1405 Investigators: B. Balcerzak - D. Vormelker An elderly Eastpointe couple has been able to live on a small pension and their Social Security. The husband, in his 70’s, became disabled while at the same time his wife continues treatment for lung cancer. Their medical expenses have depleted their savings and has placed them behind with living expenses. The Crisis Club paid a DTE bill and a mortgage payment. Case 1407 Investigators: J. Oreson - D. Vormelker A referral from Van Elslander Cancer Center identified a St. Clair Shores resident in crisis. The single 50-year old woman was unable to work while being treated for breast cancer. She has applied for Social Security benefits and plans to return to work this summer. Her landlord has waived late charges and the Crisis Club made three rent payments and paid a Consumers Energy bill. Case 1408 Investigators: B. Balcerzak - D. Vormelker A family living in Lenox, MI was also referred by the Van Elslander Cancer Center. The couple has four children and is also raising a grandchild. The father is a laid off contractor and the mother is unable to work while in treatment for gallbladder cancer. The case investigators arranged to provide food and gas while their neighbors continue to help in other ways. Case 1409 Investigators: B. Balcerzak - F. LaGrasso Sr. A Catholic Chaplain called the hot-line asking for any possible assistance for a man just released from a Detroit hospital. Case investigators reported the 47-year old was a double foot amputee, due to juvenile diabetes. The man was living in squalor in a home he claimed to own free and clear. He does collect modest Social Security Disability benefits and a food allowance. The young man’s only concern was that he wanted to keep up his monthly payments to DTE to pay off a $3,000.00 balance. He just didn’t want to live in the dark if his power was shut off. The Crisis Club made payments to cover the next three DTE payments and gave him Kroger certificates. PLEASE NOTE! We encourage our members to refer people or families in a possible crisis or emergency, but we ask our members to contact the Crisis Director or any Trustee in person. Please do not give anyone the hot-line number, or the telephone number of case investigators or any other Crisis Club member. MOTTO The Grosse Pointe Crisis Club is pledged to act fast in an emergency or “CRISIS” not covered by the policies of other charitable organizations. Cases requiring continuing aid are best handled by others. Serving the Community Since 1956 3 Thank You Notes Received Case 1402 With special thanks. This extra-special thank you note sent to you today holds more appreciation than any words can say. For you’re among the nicest people I have ever known, and you’ll never be forgotten for the thoughtfulness you’ve shown. Thanks for everything. Thank you so much for helping me and making the weight of the world a lot lighter!! May God bless each and every one of you! Sincerely. Case 1403 Handwritten from applicant Dear Jerry, A world of thanks for your compassion and your assistance. The generous gift from the Grosse Pointe Crisis Club will enable me to eliminate one debt and sleep a little bit better. Gratefully. Case 1403 Typed by a friends at her request I have often said that Angels come in many forms and manifest themselves throughout different stages of our lives. Once again, Angels have made a difference in my life. They are Mrs. Marlene Kotcher, Property Manager of Jefferson Land, Mr. Jerry Oreson of the Grosse Pointe Crisis Club, and the members of the Grosse Pointe Crisis Club. A resident of the Owen Park Apartments since June 1993, I spoke with Marlene a few weeks ago. Due to the economy, a bad car accident last year, post-accident health problems, and many other factors, including lack of health care insurance since December 2003 when I was laid off from Ford Motor Company (Systems Engineering Trainer). Debts have been steadily increasing. A trip to Harper Hospital’s Emergency Room in January 2010 due to serve food poisoning resulted in a very large hospital bill. I sold some gold jewelry to pay some of the balance but reached a standstill and began contemplating bankruptcy, overwhelmed by my debts and lack of permanent employment. This is what Marlene and I discussed and that is when she mentioned the Grosse Point Crisis Club, indicating that she would speak with her husband, a member, regarding my circumstances. A few days later I received a call from Jerry Oreson. Throughout our conversation, Jerry was warm, understanding and compassionate. He explained to me the purpose of the Club, stating that he’d discuss my situation with its members. When we next spoke, Jerry informed me that the club had agreed to pay one month’s rent to Jefferson Land on my behalf. 4 Imagine my surprise when Marlene called me Tuesday to inform me that she had seen Jerry at an event over the weekend and that he had given her a check for $1,635.00 as I had originally been informed! This amount which has paid my rent through September 30th, will allow me to cover the outstanding hospital bill!! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to each and every one of you Angels, for your generosity, for your compassion, and helping someone in need whom you’ve never met. Since my layoff from Ford, I have been a contingent Substitute Teacher and a community outreach volunteer for many organizations, including the Detroit Police Department. Again, thank you for making a difference. Sincerely Case 1404 Thank you, Good Afternoon, I would like to take a moment of your time to thank everyone involved in making the decision to help my family in our time of need. It is wonderful the Grosse Pointe Crisis Club is able to help families like mine in all the hard work and dedication and fund raisers that your club does. If it was not for your clubs generosity and thoughtfulness my family would be facing a decision that could have put us out on the streets. So from the bottom of all our hearts we thank you. Case 1406 Thank you Grosse Pointe Crisis Club, So much for the generous gift I have received from you. I truly appreciate you for your kindness in my time of need. Thank you. Case 1407 Dear Grosse Pointe Crisis Club, I would like to “thank you!” from the bottom of my heart for the help you have been to me at this time in my life. I have been off of work eight weeks due to two surgeries and had no idea how I was going to pay my rent or bills. So I prayed and then heard of your wonderful organization. I applied for help and you not only helped with the bills and July’s rent, but Augusts’ also. This is the first time since I’ve been off of work that I can honestly say I have felt “peace” with those concerns off of my mind, I am able to concentrate on wellness. Thank the Lord for you all! I hope to one day be a blessing to others as you have been to me. God Bless you and your endeavors! Sincerely 2010 Kotcher’s Kapers Golf Outing The Crisis Club has had some hot weather during its annual Kotcher’s Kapers Golf Outings and this year, the only thing hotter than the weather was Gil Mannella’s foursome! Challenged by almost 20 other teams, Gil’s team of Bob Haise, Bill Owens and Mike Haise shot a 58 at Sycamore Hills and defeated the second place team led by Gerry Finazzo. As Co-Chairman of this annual event, along with Ted Eikhoff, I would like to thank all of the players, car sponsors, tee sponsors, gift and cash donors and volunteers for their commitment to the Club and their support of the Golf Outing. With a reduction in operating costs and many generous players and sponsors, this event again raised over $9,000 to support the Crisis Club and the needy people we support. Please keep the Kotcher’s Kapers Golf Outing on your calendar in 2011.
