He has served as an assistant pastor and pastor, engaged in itinerant ministry in Canada and the United Kingdom, and has been a guest lecturer in academic and church settings around the world. He has written or edited more than fifty books, and is the president of the Gospel Coalition. He and his wife, Joy, reside in Illinois and they have two adult children. breakout main subtle ways to abandon the authority of scripture Monday, 7:00pm Auditorium Most of us in this assembly are alert to scholarship that denies the reliability, truthfulness, and authority of the Scriptures. Nevertheless there are many voices which affirm Scriptures’ authority, but which undermine that authority in much more subtle ways. This workshop surveys such habits of mind and speech, in the hope that we can avoid such pitfalls ourselves. Tuesday, 11:00am Auditorium breakout Monday, 4:30pm Auditorium Tuesday, 1:15pm A222-224 Tuesday, 2:30pm B020-021 SPEAKERS & SESSIONS 13 josh moody Josh Moody (Ph.D., University of Cambridge) serves as senior pastor of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois. Dr. Moody grew up south of London in England and became a follower of Jesus in the Church of England. He has served as a pastor at both Eden Baptist Church in Cambridge, England, and Trinity Baptist Church in New Haven, Connecticut, and did pioneer mission work in the former Soviet Union countries of Georgia and Azerbaijan. He has written a number of books and is the president and founder of God Centered Life Ministries. He is married to Rochelle and they have four children. breakout main learning to think brilliantly about contemporary culture Tuesday, 9:15am Auditorium The great American theologian, Jonathan Edwards, is wellknown for a particularly famous sermon (“Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”), as well as for being an iconic figure in the contemporary Reformed movement. He is sometimes less well understood as a significant voice in teaching us how to engage biblically without compromise and with care in the core issues undergirding contemporary secular culture and development. In this seminar we will explore the story of Edwards from an easily accessible, non-technical standpoint to expose the central tenets of his thinking with relation to the core challenges of contemporary (postmodern) culture. 14 Tuesday, 7:00pm Auditorium breakout Monday, 4:30pm B020-021 Tuesday 1:15pm Auditorium Tuesday, 2:30pm A222-224 jonathan holmes Jonathan Holmes serves on the Parkside pastoral team as the pastor for counseling and as a campus pastor at the Green Campus. He graduated with degrees in Biblical Counseling and History from The Master’s College and has a master’s degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Jonathan authored The Company We Keep: In Search of Biblical Friendship and is a member of the Biblical Counseling Coalition. He is married to Jennifer and they have four daughters. breakout the pastor as counselor There are few things in pastoral ministry which can seem as daunting as pastoral counseling. While many pastors enjoy the personal study and proclamation of the Word, many struggle to minister the word of God to hurting and struggling believers. Should pastors be involved with counseling? When do you refer out to a professional counselor? In this seminar, the theological imperative for interpersonal ministry of the Word will be discussed along with practical instruction for how to develop a counseling ministry in your church.
