with a hard-fought win in his home country.

he MXGP class just keeps
getting better and better, and
while its now looking tough for
Red Bull KTM’s Antonio Cairoli to
win his ninth world title, the battle
between Yamaha’s Romain Febvre and Honda rider Tim Gajser
is making awesome viewing, as
was the case at round 10 of the
FIM Motocross World Championship in Saint Jean D’Angely,
France, June 4-5.
In the first race, Gajser swiftly
moved into third behind Cairoli and Febvre and we had all
the makings of a classic race.
Unfortunately the eight-time
champ doesn’t seem to be able
to match the raw speed of his
young challengers and soon
Gajser made a move on Cairoli
before setting his sights on Febvre. It wasn’t long before Febvre
fell by the wayside but rather
than crumble, this seemed to
inspire the Yamaha rider into action and he began tracking what
the Honda rookie was doing.
As time ran out, it was down to
the last corner of the last lap as
Febvre dove up the inside. All he
needed was a bit of traction and
the win was his, however, his
rear tire spun out and he finished second by 0.6 seconds.
Race two was almost a
reverse of the first as it was
Gajser who got the early lead,
with Febvre slipping in behind
him. It was disaster for Cairoli,
though, as he ended up at the
bottom of the first-turn pileup
and could only come back to
seventh. Meanwhile, up front,
it was Febvre who made a move
on Gajser, again, sending the
locals into rapture. However just
as Febvre stalked Gajser, now
it was Gajser’s turn. But unlike
race one, he was never really
able to mount a serious challenge and eventually allowed
Febvre to cruise to an important
win. Evgeny Bobryshev didn’t
have the most exciting of races,
finishing third in the moto and
overall, with Cairoli fourth overall, dropping 13 more points in
the title race.
It’s getting a little bit boring
writing “Jeffrey Herlings wins
in…” each week but while the
message was the same again
in France, he certainly made it
exciting with two performances
that had the fans on the edge
of their seats. In both motos he
had poor starts, which allowed
Suzuki’s Jeremy Seewer and
Frenchman Benoit Paturel a
chance to run and hide; however, slowly but surely the “Bullit”
tracked them down. In the first
race, a blistering lap saw him
pass Paturel for lead despite
starting it six seconds behind.
Race two was much of the
same, except joining them was
Husqvarna’s Max Anstie (who
was lapped in race one). Seewer
led from the start, with Anstie
and Paturel in tow and Herlings
way down the field. But it wasn’t

long before Herlings carved his
way to the front. There was a
brief moment of dismay for the
home crowd as Paturel dropped
a couple of spots, but he quickly
made them back to finish third for
second overall. Seewer joined
him, but the kudos definitely go
to Herlings who put in two great
rides to maintain his 100% overall
victories tally in 2016.
After slowly working his way
up the championship rankings
with steady performances,
American Darian Sanayei upped
his game at what is a “home”
GP for his Bud Racing team. He
went 1-1 on a track that’s a couple of hours away from where
he’s based in France, holding off
EMX250 Championship leader
Thomas Kjer Olsen in both motos for a well-deserved overall.
This is the first time the StarSpangled Banner has played at
the MXGPs since Ryan Villopoto won in Thailand last year
and with it, has moved Sanayei
comfortably into second place,
63 points behind Kjer Olsen with
four rounds left.

ared Mees claimed redemption in the Harley-Davidson
Flat-Track Racing main event
during the opening night for ESPN’s Summer X Games at Circuit
of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, June 2. Mees, on the
factory Harley-Davidson XR750,
won by a margin of 0.369 of a
second over Kenny Coolbeth
(Zanotti Harley-Davidson XR750)
with Brad “The Bullet” Baker

Mees also secured the inaugural AMA Pro Flat Track win
at the Harley-Davidson Lone
Star Half-Mile at COTA in April
and has bragging rights to call
himself the king of the half-mile
circuit. Mees came to Austin
with a purpose, having suffered
a mechanical failure on the
last lap while leading the race
in last year’s X Games, and he
used that memory as motivation
during Thursday night’s performance.
“It’s awesome,” Mees said.
“It’s probably one of the biggest
highlights in my career. It feels
like I just won the Grand National Championship, honestly.
Last year when we got invited to
come to the X Games, I wanted
to be the first guy to win it. I was
so close and it didn’t happen
and I heard about it until tonight.
I was bitter and upset. But to

come here and to win it and
to also win in April, I feel like
I am definitely the dominant
guy. My initial thought as I
went through the finish line
was, ‘Hallelujah’ and I’m so
glad we got it in and I got
what I wanted.”
When the starting gate
dropped, Michael Kirkness
bolted from the inside lane
aboard his Harley-Davidson
XR750 to take the holeshot.
The Australian led the 12-rider field into the first turn
before calamity struck for
the odds-on favorite in the
race, last year’s X Games
gold medal winner, Bryan Smith.
Despite having a lackluster
start, Smith dove his Crosley/
Howerton Kawasaki Ninja 650
into the first corner with conviction from the middle of the
pack. In a bout of bad luck, the
Michigan native snagged the toe
of his boot on the edge of the
track, sending him to the ground
and collecting the BriggsAuto.

Meanwhile up front, Jake
Johnson‘s Zanotti Racing
Harley-Davidson XR750 grabbed
the lead and officially led the first
four laps before Baker overtook
the former champion heading
into turn four, with Mees in tow.
Mees patiently stalked Baker
until the eventual third-place finisher ran wide in the same area
of the track on lap eight, opening the door for Mees to take the
point. Coolbeth then joined the
fray, challenging Mees for the
final 10 laps of the 20-lap main.
“I showed him a wheel a little
too early,” Coolbeth said. “He
was struggling in laps three
and four trying to get it turned.
I showed him a wheel with five
or six laps to go and he played
defense. All-in-all he deserves it
after last year, so it’s good. I’m
happy and hopefully next year
we’ll be in his spot.”

Baker made his team proud by
putting the legendary XR750 on
the box for a second year in a
row.
“It feels great any time you
get on the box but here at the
X Games it’s just a little bit extra
special,” Baker said. “Hats off
to Kenny and Jared; they had
something for me. I got out there
quick, I thought I had a good
line and started overriding the
motorcycle a little bit. I was hopping around some and Kenny
and Jared were being a little
smoother. It was a good race to
get on the box. To get a bronze
medal for a second year in a row
is cool. Hats off to Jared for getting a gold after what happened

The dominance of
Ken Roczen continues
in the mile-high
altitude of Colorado
I
n the past, it has usually been
Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey
who benefits from the mistakes
of others while remaining consistent and healthy while keeping his
race craft on point. But through
three rounds of the 2016 Lucas
Oil AMA 450cc Pro Motocross
Championship, the defending
champ has offered up his first major mistake of the series while his
championship rival, RCH Suzuki’s
Ken Roczen, continues to ride
flawlessly on his way to seemingly
easy wins.
And in the 250MX class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s
Joey Savatgy has reestablished
himself as the man to beat after an
off day at Glen Helen a week prior
to the Colorado round.

only reason Roczen didn’t end
the season with a hat trick after
discovering how much better
he liked the stock triple clamps.
And the only reason he isn’t
completely undefeated outdoors
so far is because of the failure of
a part that his team attached to
his front forks. (We reported that
initially as a data-acquisition part,
but that was apparently not the
case. See Briefly.)
In moto one in Colorado,
Roczen took the early lead right
away from Anderson and simply
checked out. It took defending
champ Ryan Dungey a couple
of laps to get by Anderson for
second, and by the time the
Red Bull KTM rider made it into
second, Roczen was gone.
Anderson eventually dropped
out of the moto with altitude
sickness and caught an early
flight home in order to begin his
physical recovery prior to round
four at High Point Raceway in
two weeks’ time.
Roczen cruised in with the
moto-one win over six seconds
in front of Dungey, while Honda’s
Trey Canard finished a strong
third just in front of the Monster
Energy Kawasaki duo of Josh
Grant and Eli Tomac, and then
Canard’s teammate Cole Seely
in sixth.
In moto two, it finally looked
like Dungey was going to have
something for Roczen, as
Canard grabbed the holeshot
and Dungey was hot on his
heels, while Roczen was passing his way forward from a start
at the tail end of the top 10. But

in an uncharacteristic move for
Dungey, he cross-rutted and
went down all on his own on the
opening lap and got up outside
the top 20. Also midpack was
local hero Tomac on lap one.
As Canard led, his teammate
Seely went to work on him and
passed him for the lead on the
third lap, but it was at just about
that time that Roczen had caught
the Honda duo, and he went by
them both in short order to take
over the lead, and once again
run away with a moto victory.
But it was Tomac and
Dungey who were on the
move. Every time Dungey got
behind Tomac, Tomac would
pass someone else as the
two moved forward through
the field. At the halfway point,
Tomac had remarkably caught
Seely in second place, then
passed Seely a lap later. It took
Dungey quite a few laps longer
to get up to Seely, but he found
his way by Canard for fourth on
lap 12 of 16. In the final laps,
he made up ground on Seely,
but couldn’t make a pass stick
and was forced to settle for
fourth place. Dungey’s teammate Marvin Musquin passed
Canard, as well, with a few laps
to go to snare fifth place in the
moto, while Canard was forced
to settle for sixth.
With his 1-1 performance,
Roczen extended his points lead
to 12 points over Dungey as the
series heads into a weekend off.
Dungey still managed second
overall with a 2-4, and Tomac
ended up third with his 5-2 score.

he fifth round of the MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North
American Road Racing
Championship, the Honda Superbike Showdown of Wisconsin,
saw some of the closest racing
of the season between the four
top superbike riders in America.
Cameron Beaubier stamped his
authority on the series, his double
victory meaning that in four rounds
he has made up a 37 point deficit,
after a disastrous round one at
COTA, into a seven-point advantage over teammate, Josh Hayes.
Josh Herrin made it another
double Road America victory
with two Superstock 1000 wins,
Garrett Gerloff and Valentin
Debise shared the Supersport
wins, Richie Escalante and Bryce
Prince took the Superstock 600
wins, and Ashton Yates and Brandon Paasch took a win each in the
KTM RC 390 Cup.
Around the biggest road
course in the country,
the top four were never
more than this far apart

the veteran to work his way back
up the field. He eventually caught

“I felt really good in the race
and felt comfortable leading,”
Cameron said. “I was able to
out-brake Josh in some corners,
so I was really happy about that.
I threw two bikes down the road
over the past couple of days (in
practice), so I’m really glad to
win today and get some redemp-
tion for my guys who have had
to work extra hard to rebuild two
bikes this weekend.”
Fourth went to Elias, some 30
seconds in arrears, with Josh
Herrin (Wheels in Motion/Meen
Yamaha YZF-R1) completing the
top five and the first Superstock

Race two was another thriller, only
this time Elias found the speed required
to stay with the top three. He not just
stayed with them but very nearly took
the win, coming up just short in second after a breathless four-way battle
between eventual race winner Beaubier, Hayes in third and fourth-placed
Hayden. The top four were covered by
just 1.287 seconds after 13 hectic laps.
“The race was crazy and was probably the most fun superbike race I’ve ever
had,” said Beaubier. “Battling back and
forth and you don’t get a four-bike battle
for the lead all the time in superbike
racing. I especially didn’t want to throw
another bike down the road but you
have to ride on the edge if you’re going
to beat these guys. It was really good to
be able to get the double here.”
In the Honda Superbike Showdown,
a three-round series run over six races
(Road America, Barber Motorsports
Park and Laguna Seca Raceway) within
the MotoAmerica Series that will award
its winner a 2016 Honda Civic Sedan,
Beaubier leads the charge, 50-33, over
Roger Hayden.
Josh Herrin backed up his Superstock 1000 win in race one with another
in race two, again over Corti, with Cycle
World Suzuki’s Hayden Gillim taking the
third step on the class podium.
In the Superbike Championship,
Beaubier heads the standings on 176
points from Hayes with 169 and Hayden
on 149. Superstock 1000 points sees
Corti on top with 185 from Herrin on 168
with Latus Motors Kawasaki rider Bobby
Fong third with 160.
Frankie Babuska (16)
came home 12th in
race two but Corey

at Road America by the incredible margin of just 0.004 seconds over teammate and defending champion JD Beach.
With the track still damp in
some sections thanks to earlier
rain, slicks were still the preferred choice for the top men
including the two Yamaha riders
and the M4 SportbikeTrackGear.

wouldn’t last the race distance
however, with a ruined clutch
spoiling any chances of breaking
his MotoAmerica race luck.
Petersen held up Suzuki
honors well in his absence, taking third by just 0.264 seconds
behind Gerloff, who crossed the
stripe for his sixth win of the year.
“I wasn’t really expecting the
track to dry up as fast as it did,”
said Gerloff. “There were some
spots that were pretty damp,
but a dry line appeared pretty
quickly. Towards the end of the
race, it was mostly dry, so I felt
like I could go a little quicker. I
think we could all tell that my R6
had a lot of steam today, so that
was a big help. Also, I was doing
everything I could to stay tucked
in because streamlining is so
important here.”
The Superstock 600 race
was as competitive as ever with

fourth, dropping to 2.148 seconds behind at the flag.

and I knew that all that remained
was to finish in first,” said
Debise. “I went for it and finally I
got it today. I was worried I was
going to get drafted like I did
at VIR, so I pushed as hard as
I could in the last two corners
and opened up a bit of space. I
am so happy, and I can’t thank
the team enough for helping me
achieve this.”
In the Superstock 600 category, Prince managed to turn
the tables on Escalante to take
a 0.799 second victory and fifth
overall with Prince’s teammate
Jason Aguilar third.
Thanks to his win and second place, Gerloff increases
his lead in the point standings
to 190 points over Beach’s 147
with Debise third on 139. In
the Superstock 600 category,
Prince holds the lead on 167
from Dakota Mamola on 102 with
Wyman third with 94.

The KTM RC 390 Cup was
normal action stations at Road
America, with the massive
straights on the lowest capacity machines on the AMA grid
meaning slipstreaming was the
order of the weekend.
Race one went to AXcess
Racing’s Brandon Paasch as
he came from 10th on the grid
to take a 0.034-second victory
over Mexico’s Alejandro Gutierrez. Paasch’s rival Anthony
Mazziotto III was just .137 of a
second behind after leading
out of the final corner but got
passed by both Paasch and
Gutierrez at the finish line.
“I had a good start, I just
didn’t know what to expect from
the track with all the conditions,” Paasch said. “I got off to
a slow start and picked it up towards the end. I honestly didn’t
think I was going to win when I
came out (of turn 14) in second.

The second race on Sunday
saw a first time race winner
in Ashton Yates. The son of
famous father Aaron Yates had
been knocking on the door
of a win all season and finally
broke through in Wisconsin,
taking the victory in a four-way
battle to beat Double B Rac-
ing’s Jody Barry by just 0.049
seconds. Brandon Paasch
was just 0.211 seconds from
victory with his championship
rival Anthony Mazziotto finishing fourth, 0.244 seconds
behind Yates.
“I didn’t want to be the first
one coming out of the final corner because I knew I was going
to get used,” Yates said. “I had
to think a little bit. I checked up
in Canada Corner a little bit and
in the final corner I checked up
a lot and let them both by. Then I
made my pass.”
In the points, Paasch leads on
164 from Mazziotto on 157 while
Yates and Barry are tied for third
at 104. CN
