Dear FWA Members, Supporters and Friends, The FWA has reached many milestones over our nearly 60‐year history, and fiscal year 2013‐2014 matches those powerful strides as we break new ground in a rapidly evolving industry. I have relished the opportunity to collaborate with our leaders on the FWA Board and Leadership Council, as well as with industry experts, both Members and featured speakers alike. As the FWA’s 52nd President, it has been a privilege to serve this organization as we work together to accelerate the advancement and leadership of women across the financial services industry and beyond. We hosted more than 50 Kimberly Weinrick mission‐driven events this year in New York and we continued to provide FWA Board President 2014‐15
mentoring and scholarships that over our history have reached more than 5,000 young professionals and students. This year, my priority was to return to our core competencies: capital markets, technology, leadership and mentoring. During the year the FWA featured several CEOs and C‐suite executives, including forums with Jamie Dimon and Marianne Lake of JPMorgan Chase; Steven Kandarian and Marlene Debel of MetLife; and former Citi Chairman Dick Parsons and Sarah Smith of Goldman Sachs. In addition, we hosted topical panels on issues including private equity, joining corporate boards, disruptive technology, non‐profits after Wall Street, and green and sustainable accounting. The FWA launched its fully reimagined website, developed a LinkedIn group for its Next Generation Community, increased Facebook followers by 50% and Twitter followers to nearly 4,000, and launched an FWA Store. Additionally, we hosted our inaugural Past President’s Breakfast, designed to become an annual event. We also successfully piloted Members‐only courses as well as Continuing Education credits offered by host partners. Further, we enhanced our global agenda and fund raising efforts through our record‐setting Holiday Benefit at the German Consulate, which set the stage for the larger, FWA Annual International Conference this year to Berlin. First we piloted new and successful fundraising efforts with CharityBuzz, along with a briefing from the Global Head of Research as J.P. Morgan. For the Berlin program, marking the 25th country for the FWA’s International Conferences, we hosted more than 50 FWA Delegates, held meetings with Members of Parliament, CEOs, the Bundesbank and at Berlin’s tech incubator The Factory, setting another fundraising record. In the community‐engagement space, the FWA increased visibility and provided more granular metrics. This year we celebrated our 30th Women of the Year Awards, honoring Martina Mejean‐Hund, CFO of MasterCard; and Vicki Fuller, CIO of the New York State Pension Fund. The FWA also returned our Microfinance Giving Program to a scholarship‐based program with ACCION and Harvard Business School. Additionally, we created an important new initiative, the FWA for Women Veterans: Serving Women Who Served. The U.S. now has the greatest number of women veterans in history, and many of these impressive women face challenges in translating their experience and skills as they transition into the private sector, including the financial community. To help them address their needs in a trusted relationship, we launched our program with dedicated research and collaboration, including with President’s Circle firms, many of which have veterans initiatives in place or under development. The FWA hosted 125 attendees from across the industry and veteran community non‐profits to build on this FWA 2013-14 Annual Report

critical effort. We provided a focused resume writing and business protocol course offering, and have a dedicated email: [email protected] . In addition, The FWA moderated a panel for women veterans on successful pathways to transition at New York City College in Criminal Justice, attended military programs including an Air Force symposium, and moderated a session with the Officer Women Leadership Symposium in Arlington. This year we also enjoyed increased board involvement in key events with Baruch College and Murry Bergtraum High School mentees, including the graduation celebration dinners. To the FWA Mentees, congratulations! And to the FWA Mentors, thank you – because of your diligence and commitment, we have another class of impressive, inspiring young leaders. I’m also so pleased to note a number of robust outreach efforts, including the Members survey with nearly 30% completion rate, providing valuable feedback; our now annual Forbes supplement featuring the FWA; the FWA video “Our Story,” as well as our first FWA ad in many years, which is posted to our new website. In addition, I’m proud to highlight the strong collaboration with our incoming president, Maureen Adolf, as well as the wonderful partnership with the FWA Office, specifically with Interim Executive Director Karen Karpowich, whom we sincerely thank for her service and many contributions to our organization. We have also identified the FWA’s next Executive Director, the accomplished industry leader Jennifer Openshaw, who will start her new role for the FWA in mid‐July; Karen and Jennifer will ensure a smooth transition during their overlapping weeks. All of these efforts work in concert to advance our mission. As we close another year for the FWA, I hope you are very proud of your involvement – we sincerely thank you for your support! Treasurer’s Report for FY 2013-2014
To the Board of Directors and FWA Members:
For the year ending June 30, 2014, the Financial Women’s Association of NY will continue to
report and maintain its books according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principals in the
United States, that is recognizing revenue earned over the course of our 2013/14 fiscal year
(although the cash may not have yet been received) as well as expenses and obligations incurred
but not yet paid. The interim eleven-month financial statements reflect those transactions
accounted for from July 1, 2013 through May 31, 2014, but June results will affect the final
outcome for the year. This report presents an interim unaudited analysis, not the final outcome,
for the FWA’s fiscal year ending June 30, 2014. Final results will be made available in the audited
financial statements in the fall. The FWA’s financial results for the fiscal year ending June 2013
received an unqualified opinion from its auditors Condon O’Meara, and with respect to the
Educational Fund, also met the Better Business Bureau’s not-for-profit ratios.
This report will present the Business League year-to-date results first and then the Educational
Fund results.
BUSINESS LEAGUE:
The Business League raised $507,906 in revenue for the eleven months, consisting primarily of
dues, programming, the international conference and President’s Circle contributions. Revenue
from dues increased by $19,535, a 9% increase, thanks to the exceptional efforts of the
Membership Committee, including the launch of rolling membership.
Programming’s contribution as of May 30, 2014, net of associated expenses, increased by 7% to
$73,714. Our programming committees did a great job in putting on informative events. Many
of this year’s events were joint efforts of more than one committee.
Net revenue from the international conference to Berlin was $60,054, $10,000 of which is
reflected in the financials of the Ed Fund as a result of a donation made by BNP Paribas. Thanks
to Katrin Dambrot & her committee this conference was an unprecedented success!
Net contributions to the Business League from President’s Circle supporters totaled $145,500
year-to-date compared to $153,500 at this same time one year ago which is a decrease of
$8,000. The gross PC revenue is $298,500 of which $153,000 was allocated to the annual dinner,
leaving the $145,500.
Administrative and overhead expenses were up $35,729 over last year mainly due to the cost of
the search firm to find our new executive director and the cost of our new recently launched
website. All of this contributed to $123,029 in net operating income for the eleven months
ending May 31, 2014. After investment activity and realized gains, net income for the period
totaled $246,505 as of May 31, 2014, a 4% increase versus net income of $237,494 last year at
this same time.

The Business League financial condition as captured on its balance sheet has $1,522,162 in total
assets, offset by $6,000 in liabilities. The fund balance at May 31, 2014 was $1,516,162 up from
$1,331,480 at the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1, 2013.
EDUCATIONAL FUND:
Educational Fund reporting distinguishes between unrestricted funds raised, temporarily
restricted grants and contributions that will be used for specific programs such as financial
backpack and mentoring in years to come, and a total fund column that captures all revenue
(including new grants net of funds from prior years that have been released from restrictions)
and expenses associated with temporarily restricted funds as well as ongoing operations.
I am pleased to report that the FWA Educational Fund of New York had a positive year. Support
and revenue in the Ed Fund for the 11 months ending May 31, 2014 totaled $513,313, as
compared to $602,640 in 2013 – a 15 % decrease. This included net profit of $17,422 from the
Holiday Benefit and $194,156 from the Annual Dinner to date. We expect the final net profit
from the annual dinner to exceed $200,000. Thanks to Tina & Committee
Programming committees in the Ed Fund contributed $13,112 after expenses. Grants &
contributions were $205,920 which is a decrease from $305,632.
We supported $92,000 in scholarships, $36,051 in mentoring programs, $18,726 in Financial
Literacy programs and $98,062 for the financial backpack program and $48,004 in other
programs year-to-date through May 31, 2014.
$254,507 was released from restricted funds.
Temporarily restricted funds as of May 31, 2014 include an additional $175,000 from BMO
bringing their total to $427,680. We also have $205,063 from HSBC and $3,075 for the Lenore
Albom Fund.
After investment income of $228,054 and administrative and overhead expenses of $188,709,
we are reporting an increase in net assets of $174,339 for the eleven months ended May 31,
2014. Total net assets are $2,594,681 as of May 31, 2014 versus $2,420,341 as of June 30, 2013,
including $1,822,216 invested in the unrestricted portfolio and $635,818 invested in the
restricted portfolio as of May 31, 2014.
It takes a team of dedicated professionals and volunteers to adhere to budgeted goals and
sustain consistent financial oversight. I would like to thank this year’s Assistant Treasurer, Mindy
Kipness , our Accountant John Koprowski for his efforts every month to close the books, offer
insight on financial policies and provide the financial reports critical to the Board’s decisionmaking, and of course Karen Karpowich and her staff, Lisa & Brisjeda for their assistance
throughout the year. I would like to recognize the amazing job done by our president, Kim
Weinrick for her leadership & all she has accomplished. Finally I would like to thank the FWA
Board for their strategic oversight and dedication to sustaining the FWA’s financial strength,
which is key to the FWA mission.

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The mission of the Audit Committee is to assist the Boards of Directors of the Educational Fund and the
Business League in fulfilling the Boards’ financial oversight responsibilities. Principal responsibilities
include selecting the auditors, assuring the audited financial statements and the tax returns are
prepared and filed, monitoring the financial reporting processes and overseeing the FWA’s conflict of
interest policies.
Accomplishments/Highlights

Reviewed the audited financial statements and tax returns (Forms 990) for both the Business
League and the Educational Fund for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2012. The financial
statements have been posted to the Members-Only FWA Reports section to provide ease of
access to the financial information and increase the organizations’ transparency to its Members
The Forms 990 are available to the public under the”About Us” section of the website
Presented and reviewed the Forms 990 with the respective boards of directors of the Business
League and the Educational Fund
Reviewed for best in class practices, the governance and the transparency aspects of FWA’s
policies and procedures which are highlighted on Form 990
Evaluated proposed transactions involving the FWA or individual Members to determine
whether proposed transactions would be in compliance with the FWA’s standards of good
governance policies.
Recommendations for the Future
Continue to monitor industry developments in governance matters and evaluate the appropriateness of
the FWA’s governance policies.

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The Business and Government Affairs Committee promotes professional growth for our Members
through the discussion of topical global industry, government issues as well as next wave issues that are
likely to have a significant impact.
Our mission is to:

Bring clarity and build understanding in today’s hot topics and highlight tomorrow’s financial
market challenges

Serve as a “think tank” gathering ideas from a broad cross-section of industry professionals and
sharing them with others

Move beyond traditional financial topics and explore areas such as: global economics,
technology, and the financial systems landscape.
Accomplishments/Highlights
Over the 2013-2014 season, we held three events:
The Changing World of Insurance Regulation: State, Federal and International Developments: In
partnership with the Insurance Law Committee of the New York County Lawyers' Association (NYCLA),
we presented a panel discussion exploring recent and continuing developments in U.S. and international
insurance regulation and the global financial services markets. The event qualified participants to earn
1.5 CLE credits and 1.5 CPE credits. Maureen Adolf, SVP of Government Relations, Nelson Levine de
Luca & Hamilton and FWA President Elect served as the moderator and the panelists were Thomas
Leonardi, Connecticut Insurance Commissioner and Karen Elinski, SVP & Head of Government Relations,
TIAA-CREF and FWA VP.
Innovation – How Can I Become a Better Innovator?: Guests enjoyed a discussion with Amelia Dunlop
and Yi Leng Lee of Doblin titled, “Monitor Deloitte's Innovation Practice,” as they offered practical
methods to develop more systematic and structured approaches to innovation. Furthermore, the
speakers provided insights on how to build both the robust structures and the internal systems to
provide reliable, repeatable growth and innovation.
Richard Edelman: The Role of Business in Creating Trust Today: Richard Edelman, president and CEO of
the world’s largest public relations firm shared the remarkable findings of Edelman’s 2014 Trust
Barometer, a global survey of 27 markets featured at the World Economic Forum at Davos, and
discussed how business can drive positive global change in crucial sectors like energy, technology and
food.

Our committee looks forward to partnering with the President Circle Committee and other FWA
Committees to design and present programs that are of interest to FWA Members as well as attract new

CAREER CONNECTIONS ‐ TRANSITION TUESDAY Co‐Chairs: Patti Mittelman, Great Performances Tamara Lourdin, Citibank Committee Purpose and 2013‐2014 Objectives The Career Connections Committee organizes the Transition Tuesday series. The Committee plans and coordinates interactive forums and workshops focusing on topics designed to support FWA Members in transition or career change, as well as growing their careers with current employers. Speakers are accomplished FWA Members who share their expertise, talents and skills, as well as their individual stories. Transition Tuesday events are designed “for the FWA, by the FWA.” There is ample time for networking so that Members can get to know each other and share career information. Programs are for Members only and offered free of charge. This is a significant membership benefit for those in transition or who want to grow their careers. Accomplishments/Highlights During the FWA’s 2013 – 2014 fiscal year the committee held four events including: – Using LinkedIn to Further Your Career or Land That Job, October 2013: Guest speakers Jeannette Paladino and Sarah Stamboulie provided up to the minute insights and tips on how to tap into the hidden job market. Members learned how to reach a targeted network, enable recruiters to “find you” and how to use LinkedIn groups to their best advantage. – How the Fierce Handle Fear: Secrets to Succeeding in Challenging Times, January 2014: Caroline Ceniza‐Levine, career expert, author, frequent career commentator on CBS, CNN, Fox Business and numerous periodicals, provided a thought‐provoking evening. Guests learned how to prepare for high stakes career opportunities, recover if things go wrong, and sustain resilience despite challenging conditions. – Powering Up Your Career: Using Change as a Positive Force, March 2014: In this interactive workshop, guest speaker Audrey Sloofman, an organization development and career expert with experience in top Fortune 500 companies, presented the six key elements to career management in times of continuous or unpredictable change. – How to Build Your Daily Networking Relationships, May 2014: Members heard Andrea Nierenberg, author of seven books and recognized networking expert, talk about the secrets of successful networking. From how to differentiate yourself from others to the five best practices to put into action every day, Audrey inspired and motivated her audience. We invited employees from the women’s organizations of our FWA President’s Circle sponsors to attend our events. This helped foster networking and membership opportunities. It was also rewarding to have FWA Members connect and network with each other. In fact, at the end of each event, many attendees did not want to leave. FWA 2013-14 Annual Report

Recommendations for the Future We want to continue to provide a platform for FWA Members to showcase their career talents as speakers. Many of our presenters received engagement opportunities later on. While enrollment at our Career Connections events have been high, we recommend continuing to entice additional FWA Members to experience the career advice and camaraderie that our events provide. Career Connections can further maximize its charter by expanding existing linkages with the sponsoring President’s Circle firm’s internal women’s organizations. COLLEGE CONNECTIONS/WALL STREET EXCHANGE Co‐Chairs: Gerri Facchine, Chief Risk Officer Regulatory Coordination, Credit Suisse Laura Smith Dunaief, Principal at LASD Resource Development Committee Purpose and 2013‐2014 Objectives The Wall Street Exchange (WSE) – College Connections Committee manages the Wall Street Exchange program, which is designed to augment and coincide with paid summer internship experience of select qualified students who are between their junior and senior years of college and employed in the New York metropolitan area. The goal is to provide program participants with the tools necessary to conduct a successful job search and to think strategically about career choices, while also learning how to develop their career and leadership skills. Our main committee objective involves planning, managing, and executing nine consecutive weekly program sessions that occur each summer from mid‐June through mid‐August. Additional committee objectives include enhancing the scope of our corporate sponsors’ engagement with the WSE program and the FWA, working continually to strengthen and enrich program content, while also exploring how innovation and technology are reshaping career paths in finance. We also participate in FWA meetings to develop synergies among the organization’s next generation programs such as mentoring and financial literacy. Continuing objectives of the committee include expanding awareness of the WSE program among internships and sponsors not currently represented, establishing alliances with local business school programs, recruiting top candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences, while fostering an on‐
going “Alumni Network” of WSE graduates who are also engaged in the FWA. Accomplishments/Highlights –

Graduated 31 students from more than 20 different colleges with paid internships at 17 different firms in the New York City area. Continued to transform the program’s focus beyond conducting a successful job search with career options to include a focus on career development and learning about leadership skills. Partnered with the FWA President’s Circle Committee in securing first‐time sponsorship of technology‐focused firm, SAP, hosting a career panel that discussed potential career routes and the importance of technology in the financial services industry. Continued to expand college marketing and recruiting efforts, targeting additional schools not previously marketed to, along with additional outreach to internship program managers at firms. Partnered with the FWA Strategic Marketing and Communications Committee in launching the Next Generation LinkedIn Community that resulted in close to 100 WSE program graduates as Members, fostering a connected network, sharing career experiences, and promoting the FWA and WSE. Discuss and devise a plan with the new FWA Executive Director and FWA Membership Committee to devise a potential student, low‐ or no‐ cost membership option targeted to WSE alumni who have not yet started their careers and track the activities of those who become FWA members. Determine a feasible promotion or media plan across nine weekly events that meets both the needs of the FWA as well as the requirements of sponsors, which mainly consists of President’s Circle firms. Continue to leverage established WSE participant and sponsor surveys, ensuring surveys are performed annually to obtain and track program feedback on an on‐going basis. Review the potential value in surveying schools who continually support the program each year and have students successfully complete the WSE program. Add WSE alumni to on‐line distribution list to receive the FWA Newsletter, so they become increasingly familiar with the organization, FWA membership, and upcoming events. Further partner with WSE program sponsors and other FWA committees on delivery of content and networking that continually improves the program experience for participants. Expand the diversity of firms who sponsor the WSE program, with particular focus on those who support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiatives. The mission of the Directorships & Corporate Governance Committee is three-fold:

– To assist women who are board-ready or wish to become board-ready to network, hone
pertinent skills and identify opportunities (where possible) for potential board service
– To participate in the process of placing our Members on public and private company boards.

Diversifying the American Board Program and Pre-Conference Workshops (Jan 29, 2014): For
the eleventh year, this event sponsored by Deloitte and attended by approximately 80
participants, entailed three interactive workshops with organizations discussing “Finding the
Right Fit: Private Company Boards.” Two panels moderated by Nicole Sandford and Dan
Konigsburg, Partners at Deloitte and Touche LLP reviewing “Making Decisions Under Pressure”
with Ms. Mary Galligan, retired FBI Special Agent for Cyber and Special Operations and current
director with Deloitte & Touche LLP, shared practical advice on making appropriate decisions
when the stakes are high – a key skill for any board member, and “Knowing the Role: What CEOs

Serving Women Who Served (Feb 6, 2014): In an engaging panel discussion at the JP Morgan
Chase headquarters, the FWA announced its new initiative, Women Veterans: Serving Women

The challenges that veterans face, such as positioning their military abilities for private sector
professions, took center stage at this session with more than 125 Members and guests. This

and Corporate Governance Committee, and Raleigh Mayer, Co-Chair of the Professional
Development Committee.
Presenting Yourself: Board and C-Level Resume and Biography Building (June 5, 2014): Chadick
Ellig’s Stacy Lauren Musi and Pamela Packard, an independent corporate director and President
of the National Association of Corporate Directors New York Chapter, led a session with about
25 FWA Members to provide helpful guidelines and tips to assist those seeking executive or
corporate board positions persuasively present their qualifications. This event was co-offered
with the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI)/Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) and hosted by Clifford
Chance US LLP.

The Distinguished Speakers Committee offers programs that feature CEOs and industry leaders who

Fireside Chat with Jamie Dimon and Marianne Lake:
On October 8,, 2013 Jamie Dimon, CEO and Chairman of JP Morgan Chase, was interviewed by Marianne
Lake, CFO of JP Morgan Chase at their New York global headquarters. Ms. Lake led Mr. Dimon through
his career path. He discussed how he and JP Morgan reacted to challenging times both before and after
the financial crisis. Mr. Dimon also took questions from the audience which touched on his leadership
style, career opportunities in banking and Washington regulation. The event and reception that
followed was hosted by JP Morgan.
Fireside Chat with Richard Parsons:
On April 7, 2014 Dick Parsons, the former Chairman and CEO of Time Warner, former Chairman of
Citigroup, Former Chairman of Dime Bancorp, Inc. and the Managing Partner of the New York law firm
Patterson, Belknap, Web and Tyler was interviewed by Sarah Smith, Controller and Chief Accounting
Officer of Goldman Sachs. Mr. Parsons spoke of his career, his passion for impact investing and
provided career advice to the audience. He took questions from the audience where he encouraged
them to be the “person people want to succeed.” Goldman Sachs hosted the event as well as a
reception.

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The purpose of the committee is to provide a platform for professional development and is focused
specifically on Members of the FWA constituency that are within his/her first 10 years of a specific
career path. Participation however is not restricted to a Member pursuing his/her first career but targets
all individuals who are beginning new career development.
Our platform rests on three primary objectives. First, Members enhance their skill sets in networking
with their peers. These “horizontal” relationships are supplemented by the committee’s second
objective, the growth of “vertical” relationships with more seasoned FWA Members who have been in
his/her career for 25+ years. The final objective of our committee rests in skill enhancement seminars
that focus on the development and practice of a professional skill set through lecture, role playing and
other interactive procedures.
We believe our committee provides the necessary resources for professional development and support
that is essential to the success of any emerging leader.

Feature FWA Members if they have been engaged by another FWA Member. We are women
supporting women and what better way than providing services to fellow FWA Members! One
suggestion could be a “SHOUT OUT” standing section in the FWA Newsletter wherein an FWA
Member (perhaps from the membership committee?) could do a mock interview of the FWA
Member who was helped and the FWA Member who was the service provider. Another related
but different suggestion could be a standing but rotational section “Who Are Your FWA
Colleagues in the field of ______?” and then just feature the names. We need to be able to
search membership by functionality, not just name.

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
In 2007, we established the FWA Executive Leaders committee to create special events for seniorranking executive women. Designed to engage high-profile executive women with the FWA, our events
provide an opportunity for peer-to-peer networking in exclusive settings.
The FWA Executive Leaders events are invitation-only for a select number of qualified invitees, ranging
in number from 15 to 85. Often priced at $100-$150 per person, all or most of the event proceeds
benefit the FWA to fund financial literacy, mentoring, scholarships and other programs.
We are proud that high-end institutions have graciously hosted FWA Executive Leaders events in order
to support the FWA’s educational and philanthropic efforts, and to raise their own brand awareness
among this elite target audience.
Accomplishments/Highlights
Over the 2013-2014 season, we held three events including:

An Evening with Irene Dorner. In the illustrious board room of Guggenheim Partners,
Committee Member Rehana Farrell led an intimate, roundtable discussion with Irene Dorner,
who is President & CEO of HSBC USA, Group Managing Director of HSBC Holdings, and American
Banker’s 2012 Most Powerful Woman in Banking.

Private Event at MOMA. The exhibit’s curator led our group through a private showing of
“Designing Modern Women, 1980-1990,” and hosted a cocktail party at the Museum of Modern
Art.

Women’s Project Theater (WPT). Hosted at City Center, guests enjoyed an intimate panel
discussion with Broadway Producer Arlene Scanlon and Jessica Jenen, the Executive Consultant
of WPT, about women in the business of theater and then enjoyed a performance of “The Most
Deserving.”
Recommendations for the Future
We will continue with our strategy in the upcoming year to raise the profile of the FWA among seniorranking executive women, as well as to provide them with an attractive venue and unique platform to
meet and network.
We are proud that a number of our attendees have subsequently joined the FWA, or become reengaged
with the organization, and we will continue to drive membership through our events.

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The Financial Backpack program is designed to prepare students and young adults for real life after high
school in the areas of personal finance and financial security.
The primary focus is to ensure that Financial Backpack participants will have:

financial goals.
The Committee sought out and leveraged additional partners in the New York City area to further their
goal in reaching more students during this sixth year of the program and in building audience for
subsequent years. We continued to refine and update the curriculum by adding more interactive
activities and highlighting top lessons for each module.
NOTE: While the original grant was for five years, we received approval from HSBC to extend the grant
for an additional two years.

A continued partnership with the Virtual Enterprise International program, which provided
approximately 219 NYC high school students with instruction using our new case study
curriculum related to financial goals, budgeting, college financing through three workshops held
in fall, winter and spring. A subset of 129 students returned for workshops on investing, banking
basics and credit.
A one day workshop delivered to 56 students at Hunter College High School.
A series of seven weekly workshops that covered introduction to financial literacy for 31
students at the High School of Economics and Finance.
Workshop with 15 mentees from High School of Fashion Institute – delivered workshop on
Financial Goals and Banking Basics using new Case Study curriculum.
Workshop with 21 freshman at Murry Bergtraum High School – delivered workshops on
Financial Goals, Budgeting and Banking Basics using new Case Study curriculum.
The new case study-based curriculum has been getting great reviews from the students and
facilitators such as: relevant, realistic, real world, hands-on, interactive.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The Financial Literacy Committee seeks to enable adult women to take better control of their financial
lives by providing education on six critical areas of personal financial decision making. The education is
delivered in partnership with two organizations in New York City that offer job skills training programs
for women. They include:
– Grace Institute – Provides women with the skills to qualify them for entry level office work as
administrative assistants
– Non Traditional Employment for Women (N.E.W.) –Offers women training in the building trades,
e.g. construction, electrical work, and plumbing; enabling them to secure entry level
apprenticeship positions in the unions that can lead to full licensing in the trade.
The course is designed as a seven week program delivered in a classroom setting. FWA Members in the
Financial Literacy Committee team-teach each session. They are assisted by a Peer Trainer, a
representative of the student population, and a Peer Administrator, who handles the scheduling,
attendance, and distribution of materials for each of the sessions.
The core skills we teach are:
– Cash flow and budgeting
– Use of credit cards
– Getting out of debt
– Using benefits
– Taxes
– Investing to achieve your goals
Two programs were delivered this year. They include:
– Fall 2013 – The fall program was presented at N.E.W.
– Spring 2014 - The spring class was presented at Grace Institute.
For both institutions, the participants are recruited from past graduates of their respective program.
Between the two programs, we graduated approximately 40 students.
The sustainability of the committee’s work is an outcome of the approach that we use to recruit new
committee Members and train them to be eligible to teach the classes. We train the FWA Members by
having them observe the session they wish to teach. The following semester they are then eligible to
team-teach the session with another FWA Member. After that, they may teach it solo or train another
eligible FWA Member.
FWA Members benefit by sharing their knowledge and presenting the material before a group in a
relaxed atmosphere. FWA Members also train the Peer Trainer and Peer Administrator, who are both
recruited from the population of training program graduates.

Following the successful completion of the program, participants who have completed six out of seven
sessions are invited to a graduation dinner, where they are presented with a certificate and a copy of
the book “No More Fear of Finance,” written by Ann Diamond.
Accomplishments/Highlights
The program was instituted in 2004, and this year marks the seventh year with N.E.W. and the fifth year
with Grace Institute. Each year, we identify a few initiatives to improve the program. This year, the
initiatives covered the course materials and the depth of our teaching roster.
– Course Materials – We focused on updating the handouts and teaching guides for the program
to reflect any changes in regulations and market conditions.
– Teaching Roster – We are always looking for Members who have an interest in teaching the
classes, especially those with specializations in bankruptcy and tax. This year’s successes include
participation by a new tax accountant to expand our roster on this topic, as well as five new
Committee members who attended our classes in preparation for conducting a session.
Recommendations for the Future
Teaching financial literacy is a dynamic process. The material must be kept fresh and updated. We
always need to expand our roster of volunteers to insure that we have enough trainers and coordinators
to run the program effectively. We are also frequently approached for suggestions on how to expand
the program to a wider audience and are actively looking for other organizations with which to establish
a partnership.

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The event held on April 23rd at the Grand Hyatt in New York City is the FWA's primary fundraiser that
supports the FWA of New York Educational Fund's scholarship, mentoring, financial literacy and
professional development initiatives. This year, the organization marked the 30th Anniversary of the
Awards. On hand was one of the Founding Members of the FWA, and second President Joan Williams
Farr who was honored from the Dias by the 500 members and guests. Additionally, a special video was
shown that marked FWA Firsts and featured other highlights from our illustrious past.
Accomplishments/Highlights
Our 2014 FWA Women of the Year Honorees were Martina Hund-Mejean, CFO of MasterCard and Vicki
Fuller, Chief Investment Officer of New York State Common Retirement Fund. Both Honorees spoke of
their respective paths to achievement as well as the continuing need to create a more inclusive, diverse
workplace for women on Wall Street and in financial roles across multiple industries.
In addition to our Honorees other featured speakers were FWA Mentees Kaiv Abreu from Murry
Bergtraum High School and Halina Karatayeva from Baruch College, who spoke of their experiences and
challenges and acknowledged the support of their FWA Mentors Patricia Lucey and Marline Alexander.
In the second half of the program was a moving tribute to the late Muriel Siebert, reprising her video
from the “Makers Series” that was shown at last year’s Annual Dinner. Ms. Siebert was the First Woman
of Wall Street, an FWA Member and the 1994 FWA Woman of the Year.
Gail Brewer, Manhattan Borough President, presented FWA President Kimberly Weinrick with a special
Proclamation declaring April 23, 2014 as “FWA Appreciation Day” in New York City.
The dinner was again emceed by Tyler Mathisen, "Power Lunch" Co-Anchor & VP, Strategic Editorial
Initiatives and Co-Anchor "Nightly Business Report" of CNBC, who kept the dinner entertaining.
For a second year in a row with the help of a $25,000 matching grant from our
President's Circle Partner BMO Capital Markets, FWA was able to raise an additional
$65,000 over and above our corporate table, advertising and ticket support.
Christine Farkas, BMO Managing Director & Head, U.S. Equity Research announced that
the FWA would again be a recipient of Equity Through Education Trading Day Grant on
Sept 24, 2014. This marks the tenth year of the program.

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The Committee’s purpose is to plan and execute the FWA’s Annual Holiday Benefit, which serves as both
the FWA’s signature holiday event as well as a fundraiser for the Educational Fund.
Objectives for 2013-2014 diverged from the past in that the theme of the event, which was held at the
Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in New York, tied directly to the year’s
international theme of Germany and the EU as well as to the venue for the International Conference,
which was Berlin.
Additionally, the Committee diverged from the practice of holding a raffle during the event and instead
held an online auction through Charitybuzz, which produced revenue manifold the amount of the past
raffles by better monetizing the high-value items that were donated. This provided significantly more
return and contribution to the Educational Fund.
Accomplishments/Highlights

About 160 attendees…the maximum the venue could accommodate

Proved the assumption that an online auction of donated items would provide significantly
higher revenue for the Ed. Fund than the raffle format

Recommendations for the Future
It appears from anecdotal evidence that there is a split between those who felt that the event was too
“business” oriented rather than “party” oriented and would like to return to the format of having the
Holiday Benefit strictly as a networking and celebratory event. Those that felt the event was worth their
time thought so because of the high-level speaker and business networking opportunities created by the
German Consulate’s invitation of many non-member guests not generally seen at FWA events. These

anecdotal comments appear to be largely divided along generational lines and it behooves the
organization as a whole to balance between retaining old traditions, while still providing a forum that it
interesting and attracts a younger cohort to the FWA. This younger cohort represents the future of the
FWA.
It is also important to keep in mind the level of corporate interest and subsequent “joining” as
Presidents’ Circle members are present at the HolidayFEST.

GLOBAL AGENDA Co‐Chairs: Donna LaSpina, BNP Paribas Simone Vinocour, RBC Capital Markets Janet Zagorin, Sidley Austin (Vice Chair) Committee Purpose and 2013‐2014 Objectives The objective of the Global Agenda & Outreach Committee is to “bring the world to the FWA” by exploring issues that have a current impact on the economies and markets in both the developing and developed world. Our focus is to present programs which offer a dialogue on political, economic or financial issues that are important for FWA Members and guests to be better versed on international themes and their interconnection with U.S.‐oriented financial topics. Accomplishments/Highlights This past year, we were proud to organize successful events on important topics that served to educate attendees, as well as to provide them with diverse new perspectives. They include: – “Hot Topics” – This year, our committee meetings were started with a 15 minute focus on a particular topic to better educate Members on international issues. Topics were: German elections, overview of the status of Dodd‐Frank, and review of the highlights from the 2014 International Conference to Berlin. We will continue this practice, as it benefits our most active committee Members. – MoMA Private German Art Tour – In support of the International Conference to Berlin, the committee arranged a private tour exploring MOMA’s installations of some of the most innovative and intriguing German artists from the last 50 years including Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Joseph Beuys. Following the tour, an informal lunch was held at nearby Brasserie Cognac, where participants continued the conversation on the history and highlights of MOMA’s impressive collection of 20th century German art. (January 12, 2014) –

4th Annual BNP Paribas Economic Outlook for the European Union ‐ This panel explored the current state of the economies and financial markets of the EU, featuring BNP Paribas staff conversant with European current affairs, the banking industry and investment climate, and the regulatory environment. The panel was moderated by correspondent Tracey Alloway of The Financial Times. Attendees were able to draw perspectives on growth concerns, market indicators, and current expectations for the EU economies. (March 6, 2014) For the second year in a row, the Committee sponsored a half‐page ad in the annual Dinner Journal, with contributions from Members, spearheaded by Simone Vinocour. (April 23, 2014). Recommendations for the Future The feedback from all our events have been extremely positive and new Members have enjoyed being part of an active, successful committee where each person can make a contribution. We will continue to have our “hot topics” featured during meetings and will continue to rely on our Members’ areas of both interest and expertise to help guide and shape the programming. We also would like to form a working group within the committee dedicated to the outreach portion of our mission. This would help us connect with and guide local women, whom the FWA has met through its various recent international conferences. Events planned for 2014‐2015 include: – 5th Annual BNP Paribas Eurozone Panel – a milestone event! – Panel on Africa – One Global Outreach initiative – Possible panel on global career mobility – One cultural event connected with the 2015 International Conference Special Thanks We would like to especially thank: – BNP Paribas for the flawless execution of its 4th Annual Eurozone Panel under the leadership of Donna La Spina. Wijeyeratne, Consultant, McGraw Hill Financial Patricia Addeo, Veris Wealth Partners Committee Purpose and 2013‐2014 Objectives The FWA Impact Investing Committee’s primary role is to build awareness of impact investing and to mobilize new ideas and networks in this dynamic and growing investment discipline. The committee organizes panel discussions and conversations featuring distinguished speakers with expertise in this space including financial institutions and banks such as UBS, JPM, Goldman Sachs, double bottom line investors, innovative social enterprises and academia. Our goal is to keep abreast of the ever‐changing impact investing universe by inviting thought leaders to update the FWA membership and the larger public on trends, investments and business opportunities in this space. Accomplishments/Highlights Impact Investing: A Primer on Impact Investing from the Market Makers – Explored impact investing with panelists from major foundations, banks, and private firms who have broad experience in this field (Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, MicroVest, TriLinc Global, and JPMorgan) – Created a dialogue with practitioners on their experiences in the impact investing space including size of market opportunity and industry potential – Revealed trends and outlooks in public and private financing Fireside Chat on Leadership: Dick Parsons – One‐on‐one interview with Mr. Parsons and Sarah Smith, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer of Goldman Sachs. Goldman Sachs, an FWA President’s Circle firm. – Mr. Parson highlighted his current involvement in impact investments in sub‐Saharan Africa through his newly formed PanAfrican Investment Co. His mission is to invest in opportunities that bring solutions that lead to development and economic growth in the region. The Role of Sustainability Standards in Making Investment Decisions – Moderated by PwC with panelists from UBS, BlackRock, Alliance Bernstein discussed the challenges integrating ESG data as it stands today: unreliable, not comparative, and unmeasurable – Comparative and measurable ESG data is necessary to estimate ESG risks and quantify the true value of a company. – SASB is working to establish standards to help create a common language, reduce the use of speculation and tie ESG strategy closer to the nexus of the business model. Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The Committee’s purpose is to design, develop and implement the FWA’s annual International
Conference. This year, the delegation traveled to Berlin, The Federal Republic of Germany. Each year
the FWA, in particular its President for the year, selects a destination where business and investment
opportunities are developing in dynamic ways. The International Conference provides a unique
opportunity for the FWA delegation to meet with key leaders of the finance, business and government
communities in the selected country, allowing for a substantive exchange of ideas, fact-finding and new
business connections.
This year marked the first time that the Conference – begun in 1977 and held annually since 1985 – was
held in Germany. FWA’s year-long focus on the themes of Capital Markets, Technology, Leadership and
Mentoring were woven into the Conference in Berlin.

The International Conference, Berlin- March 16 to 21, 2014:
The Conference opened with a city bus tour, and our first day ended with a reception hosted by the
United States Embassy with remarks by our keynote speaker, Ambassador John B. Emerson. Over the
next three days, our agenda included 16 sessions with 39 speakers. They included our second keynote
speaker, Elizabeth Corley (Chief Executive Officer of Allianz Global Investors, and bestselling crime fiction
novelist); Dr. Elke Koenig (President of the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority); Camille Fohl
(Chairman of the Management Board -- Germany, BNP Paribas); Claus Tigges (Regional Bundesbank
President for Berlin and Brandenburg); Dr. Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt (Member of the Board of
Management of Daimler AG – Integrity and Legal Affairs); and Dr. Daniel Yergin (Vice Chairman of IHS,

Founder of Cambridge Energy Research Associates and Global Energy Expert for CNBC). A partial listing
of the topics includes The European Union Banking Institutions and their future, “Fueling Germany: How
a New Energy Paradigm Affects German Competitiveness”, “The U.S. and Germany as Transatlantic
Economic Partners”, Post-Crisis Regulation in the U.S. and Europe, The Challenges to and Opportunities
for Financial Institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, and Compliance and Integrity Issues and their
Importance for German Businesses in the Global World. We had a Women in Leadership panel, a press
panel, a presentation on the economic outlook for 2014, and panels on The Impact of Technology on
Business and Quality of Life and the Role of Women Technology Entrepreneurs. We visited the site of
The Factory, Google’s incubator for start-up technology and other companies, enjoyed a night at the
Berlin Philharmonic, and visited The Jewish Museum.
After the Berlin Conference, part of our delegation continued on to Vienna, Austria, which included
meetings with local business professionals and other presentations.
We had 11 corporate sponsors for the Conference and its related events, one of which became a
President’s Club member.

Recommendations for the Future

Prior Committees have recommended that we build more specifically on the connections made
during the International Conferences. We agree that this would be beneficial, by creating
opportunities and new relationships for our delegation. We should explore whether the
delegation would participate in such events and desires such follow-up in a formalized manner,
or whether their personal follow-up is preferred. This should be put in place before future
Conferences, for maximum effect through planning during the Conferences.

Consider a follow-up event at which the delegation would discuss the Conference with the
broader FWA community in order to pass along what we learned and opportunities that were
flagged
–
Hold a New York City reunion event for the delegation, and schedule it before the Conference
takes place, to continue the connections made among the participants
–
Reconnect with the corporate sponsors, and give them opportunities to sponsor additional
events with the FWA to show them the value of their relationship
–
Continue the valuable practice of asking delegation members to write articles about certain
sessions and their experiences – established this year by President Kim Weinrick – to provide a
history of the specific value of the International Conferences.

Consider the length of the Conference and whether more days can be added, perhaps utilizing a
weekend, to allow for more optional sessions and/or cultural visits

The mission of the Investment Policy Committee is to oversee the Board’s on-going policy, process,
guidelines and management of the fund balances and investments in the Business League and
Educational Fund accounts of the FWA.

Recommendations for the Future
The committee recommends continuing the quarterly reviews of all the FWA investment portfolios. In
addition include semi-annual reviews to discuss any re-balancing needed. Approve withdrawals of up to
2% of the portfolio balances (total 4% annually) to fund into the respective ‘reserve funds’ for the
Business League and Education Fund (non-restricted account) when necessary. Continue to monitor and
maintain the board approved ‘Mutual Fund Investment List’ for any changes that are needed to this list.

Recommendations for the Future
Ms. Batson will remain as co-chair, while Julia and Charles will rotate off chairing the Committee, so new
co-chairs will need to be recruited and selected. We recommend that Nicole Fox and one other
volunteer be recommended for these positions.
We should set aggressive targets for membership growth due to the improved automatic renewal
process, the strong momentum that we have maintained in enrollment throughout the past year, as well
as our expectation that we will have a strong new Executive Director. We recommend that the new ED
make growing the organization’s membership with emerging as well as advanced leaders a top priority.
Should Nicole accept and be appointed as co-chair, she will need to be replaced by another volunteer as
the Committee Secretary.
We should revisit producing targeted high-profile events that will attract new Members that fit the FWA
demographic.

committee be presented to other co-chairs and Members via an announcement at the Leadership
Council and the newsletter to the entire FWA membership.
We should determine the continued purpose of men in the FWA in general and allow the Men’s Alliance
to support this mission.
The Men’s Alliance should recruit a committee secretary.
We should revisit producing targeted high-profile events that will attract new Members that fit the FWA
demographic.

MENTORING Co‐Chairs: Françoise Jeanpierre; Columbia University Medical Center Beth Dorfman; Bank of America Committee Purpose and 2013‐2014 Objectives The Mentoring Committee brings to life the FWA's mission to connect, educate, and advance women to the next generation of business leaders. Since 1986, the committee has provided one‐on‐one mentoring, beginning at the high school level at Murry Bergtraum HS for Business Careers and in 2002 with a program at Baruch College. Mentors share their professional knowledge and experience with mentees and assist mentees in developing critical thinking skills and in developing confidence in making wise choices. According to the NYC Department of Education website, Murry Bergtraum has a 61.7% year graduation rate and a 42.2% college enrollment rate. Since inception, all MBHS mentees have graduated and enrolled in college. As detailed below, the high school program has been focused on making the mentees into more confident, competitive and attractive college applicants with the goal of obtaining acceptances and scholarships at more selective colleges. Educational, cultural and social programs serve to widen the mentees' world and experiences. As a testimony to the success and importance of this program, attached to this report are several essays from MBHS seniors reflecting on the significance of our program in their lives. The Baruch College program is more focused on career and professional development. As listed below, we had a number of very successful programs targeted to beginning careers and advancement, as well as developing networking and presentation skills. In a very challenging economic environment, our Baruch mentees demonstrate a high degree of success in landing internships and full time employment. The Committee will be testing an online community through Google Groups. The online community will be a way to keep the Murry Bergtraum graduates/FWA scholarship recipients connected to the FWA and to provide support during college years. Bergtraum grads are generally scattered among various colleges and the FWA and Mentoring Committee wish to continue to stay connected with them. Accomplishments/Highlights Murry Bergtraum High School – October 201‐ Kick Off Welcome Back event for Mentors/Mentees – October 20, 2013‐ Program on Writing the College Essay‐ Emily Stone – Fall 2013‐SAT refresher course for Seniors, prep for Juniors. Instituted PSAT prep for Sophomores – Fall 2013‐ Distribute and review updated information on scholarships and diversity recruitment to mentors and mentees – Fall 2013‐ Update and distribute "College Binder" to all new mentors and mentees – Fall 2013‐ Upgrade programming for mentee weekly (7:30a.m. meeting). April 10‐12, 2014‐ College Visit‐ Overnight school‐sponsored visit to three colleges in Massachusetts: Northern University, Boston University, and Tuffs University April 8, 2014 – Mentors only meeting June 18, 2014‐ Closing Dinner Baruch College – September 12, 2013: Fall Kick‐off luncheon for mentors and mentees – October 24, 2013: Networking: FWA Mentor Patricia J. Kozu moderated a panel discussion featuring FWA mentors and a former FWA mentee. The panel shared their experiences about building and leveraging an effective, diverse career support network – November 21, 2013: Ora Shtull, Executive Coach and FWA mentor, discussed leadership presence and the top three tools successful professionals use to shine in the work place. The mentees received an autographed copy of Ora’s book: “The Glass Elevator: A Guide to Leadership Presence for Women on the Rise.” – February 6, 2014 – Baruch Mentor, Yolanda Crawford, conducted a panel of fellow employees form BNY Mellon. They led a discussion about ways in which the mentees could focus their careers in the first year after graduation. The focused on setting strategic career goals and suggested key activities for accomplishing them. – April 10 2014‐Personal Branding: A presentation by Laura Hill, President of Careers in Motion, about personal branding, how to develop a personal message and techniques for self‐
promotion. – June 4, 2014‐ Closing diner for mentors and mentees Joint Programs – June 2013‐ Active recruitment of five new mentors as a follow up from the Ed Fund dinner. December 2013 Holiday Event‐ Lunch and performance of Stomp at the Orpheum Theater attended by mentors/mentees of both programs – May 2013 –Bowlmore at University Place for mentors and mentees of both programs Recommendations for the Future Murry Bergtraum High School – The program is based at Murry Bergtraum with a new focus on the alliance with the Syracuse University Project Advance program (SUPA) – Solidify the alliance with SUPA which provides college credit courses and a rigorous curriculum – Select SUPA as the major pipeline of new mentees – Explore opportunities to send high school mentees to High School Leadership events, and pre‐college summer programs – Make rewards and recognition program for two graduating •seniors for achievement and most improved, and rewards for juniors focused on SAT test preparation part of regular programming. The Credit Suisse Coaching Summit was planned for the spring of 2014. Due to unforeseen
circumstances, Credit Suisse has not renewed its’ President’s Circle status. The event produces close to
50% of the Professional Development Committee’s contribution to the Educational Fund. This event
could be rebranded to an organization that has the facilities to handle 200-300 people in three separate
events if possible.

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The FWA Long Island is committed to providing senior professionals in local corporations and
entrepreneurs who work or live in Long Island with a local platform to educate, connect, and advance.
Our Committee works diligently to provide value to our Members with a diverse range of key topics,
presented by quality speakers to support professional growth and high level networking with synergistic
professionals.
Accomplishments/Highlights
The Long Island Committee successfully exceeded its goals with more than one profitable event per
quarter including a mix of content and networking opportunities. The committee did an excellent job of
leveraging relationships and member corporate offices to secure sponsors to host events. Over the
2013-2014 season, we held the following events:
The Invisible Threads That Bind Us: Paying It Forward the Right Way – August 2013
In August we heard heart-warming excerpts from Laura Schroff, author of "Invisible Thread: The True Story
of an 11-year-old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting with Destiny", followed by a
wonderfully engaging discussion. We enjoyed imported cheeses, meats, wine, and tastings of imported
olive oils and balsamic vinegars at The Crushed Olive, while networking.
Meet and Mingle – September, 2013
In September, we held an informal evening to meet other accomplished individuals while enjoying
delicious complimentary appetizers prepared by Chef Tom Schaudel. Networking is among the most
rewarding and important reasons for belonging to the FWA community and this event gave us that
opportunity.
Uncovering Fraud in Your Company: A Case Study of a Chief Accounting Officer trapped in the
web of Corporate Scandal – October 2013
In October, we sponsored a dynamic event consisting of a keynote speaker indicted for fraud in a Long
Island public company followed by a roundtable discussion with Randy Zelin, Moritt Hock and Hamroff LLP
and Harold Dieters of Holtz Rubenstein Reiminick LLP, a criminal attorney and a forensics CPA, respectively.
Participants also qualified for CLE or CPE credits, as needed.
Kicking Your Heels Through the Glass Ceiling in Corporate America – November 2013
In November, we were honored to feature a speaker and researcher from Catalyst, the leading nonprofit
organization expanding opportunities for women and business. The presentation focused on the latest
research entitled, Good Intentions, Imperfect Execution? Women get fewer of the "Hot Jobs" needed to
advance. Following the presentation from our keynote speaker, Anna Beninger, we heard a panel
discussion touching upon the latest "glass ceiling" issues, the unbreakable barriers that keep minorities
and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder. The panel included Anna Beninger,

Accelerate Your Business through Women's Business Enterprises Status – February 2014
In February, we heard from three successful women business owners as they discussed the impact
women's business enterprise status has had on the overall growth of their business. Our panelists
included Lina Gottesman, Nadine Cino Leed and Debra Weltmann. Lina is President and Owner of Altus
Metal, Marble and Wood. Atltus provides historical and commercial restoration and installation of
ornamental metals, natural stone and wood. Nadine is the CEO and Co-inventor of Tyga-Box Systems
and Tyga-Trax Technologies. Tyga-Box provides an environmental alternative to corrugated boxes used
when moving. Debra is the CEO of Weltmann Lighting. Weltmann Lighting is a premier lighting
distributor in the New York Area.
The Psychology of Persuasion and Influence in Communications with Keynote Speaker Dr. Dan
Schaefer, Ph.D. – April 2014
In April, we had an exciting and interactive workshop covering new information on how the brain works,
why you want to coach rather than manage, why emotion is a minefield and the myth of the 30 second
elevator pitch. We learned to improve communication effectiveness and more easily communicate our
strategy throughout our organization. Also, we focused on being able to identify and manage workrelated stress and drive towards an enjoyable work life balance.
Get in the Game: FWA-LI 4th Annual Golf Outing and Clinic – June, 2014
Our fourth annual golf outing and clinic held at Harbor Links Golf Course was a huge success. This event
provided great fun for all, whether it was nine holes or golf instruction at the clinic. The clinic attendees
were introduced to the basic skills needed to play golf: putting, chipping and full swing. They also had an
opportunity to work on their swing at the driving range with input from the instructors. Additionally,
participants attended a presentation by GolfingWomen focused on using golf for business including
insight on how to get the invite to play and some tips around golf etiquette. After golfing and the
seminar, attendee’s had the opportunity to network over cocktails and a light buffet with professionals
from Long Island.

We’re currently planning for the fall and have scheduled our summer dinner for August 6th at La Pastaria
in Summit. We are looking at a fall event to be hosted by Merrill Lynch in the Morristown area. We
continue to seek appropriate partners and venues, and speakers/subjects that our Members find
meaningful. We are seeking to begin a program in mentoring college students and are considering
volunteering for a literacy program at the Summit Library. We welcome new Members to our

attended to by an FWA WestCon Committee member to facilitate the introductions and stimulate the

“Relisency in the WorkPlace” - March 27, 2014
“Resiliency at Work" with Jean Stetz-Puchalski, founder of Individual Differences at Work, LLC. This
event was sponsored by UBS. Jean guided attendees to move away from conflict zones to zones of
strength and courage. Language and our awareness is a big part of handling workplace conflict and Jean
stressed that we need to understand and be more cognizant of the language we use.

Committee Purpose and 2013-2014 Objectives
The FWA Invests in the Future: the FWA Graduate Scholarship Program
The FWA’s Graduate Scholarship Program promotes the FWA’s mission of developing future leaders in
business. The program awards scholarships to women students pursuing careers in business in five
graduate schools in New York City. MBA candidates are enrolled at Columbia Business School, Fordham
University Graduate School of Business, Bernard M. Baruch College Zicklin School of Business and NYU
Stern School of Business, with an MPA candidate specializing in microfinance at Columbia’s School of
International and Public Affairs (SIPA).
FWA Graduate scholarship recipients (“FWA Graduate Scholars”) are selected by the schools based on
merit and the FWA’s criteria of academic accomplishment and demonstrated leadership that predicts
continued involvement in the FWA. Each scholarship award is $10,000. All awards are merit-based.
The FWA Graduate Scholarships are awarded to female students who are U.S. citizens (or permanent
legal residents in the U.S.) and in the second and final year of their programs so that they can benefit
from access to the network of FWA Members during the job search and from complimentary admission
to FWA programs when refining their professional objectives. Through access to FWA Members and
events, the Graduate Scholarship Program creates a network that benefits scholars both immediately
and over the long term. Because Scholars receive complimentary FWA membership for the year
following graduation, they enter a channel leading to continued access to the benefits of FWA
membership and long-term active participation in the FWA.

Additional Accomplishments
A major new step this year was BMO Capital Markets’ agreement to underwrite our Graduate
Scholarship Program with a $50,000 allocation to the FWA’s Education Fund. Karen Karpowich, FWA
Interim Executive Director and Kimberly Weinrick, FWA President, were instrumental in gaining BMO
Capital Markets’ support of this program. Ilene Moskowitz contributed to the cultivation and win of
BMO Capital Market’s new support and collaborated with each of the five schools on the feasibility of
new criteria proposed by BMO for the schools’ selection of scholarship recipients. Ultimately, an added
criterion agreed to by all is that a scholarship recipient be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident of
the U.S.
FWA Member Laura Smith Dunaief, an alumna of NYU Stern, chaired a panel discussion on Mentoring at
the school’s annual Stern Women in Business (SWIB) conference. Laura led her panel’s discussion of
best practices for woman-to-woman mentoring and advocacy. FWA Members received preferred
pricing in attending this event, the FWA’s logo was featured on SWIB’s website and in the conference
program as a “Friend of SWIB”, and FWA membership brochures were in each attendee’s gift bag.
The FWA’s Graduate Scholarship Committee is typically able to arrange an FWA Member as a speaker at
the annual Columbia Women in Business (CWIB) conference. The new, far earlier scheduling of this
conference in November rather than February, concurrent with discussions with the five schools about
new selection criteria, as noted above, prevented this placement in the 2013-2014 year.
Last year, we initiated a special LinkedIn group for past FWA Graduate Scholars, which now includes
many whom we were able to find through LinkedIn. This provides a channel for reconnecting and
networking with each other and with FWA Members. This success has now been replicated by other
FWA Next Generation programs.
The Graduate Scholarship Committee also actively participated in updating the text describing this
committee for the FWA’s new website.
Recommendations for the Future
We’ve just completed the 30th year of the FWA’s Graduate Scholarship Program. We look forward to
hosting the new 2014-2015 scholars and past Graduate Scholars, current and past Liaisons, Members
who are alumnae of the five schools, and Emerging Leaders and Microfinance Committee Members at a
reception celebrating this important milestone and the FWA’s vision and accomplishments through this
outstanding program -- $800,000 in scholarships to over 150 amazing young women.
Looking ahead, we should continue our outreach to find and re-connect with past Graduate Scholars,
especially earlier Scholars for whom we don’t have email addresses. Our next step will be working with
each school’s own alumni database to find contact information for these past Scholars. We’ll invite

them to re-connect and network by joining our special LinkedIn group noted above. They are prime
targets for FWA membership and referrals of prospective Members and, potentially, for contributions to
the FWA Education Fund. In recent years and currently, we ask new FWA Graduate Scholars to provide
a “lifetime” email address so we will not lose touch with them in years ahead.
Going forward, through the FWA Liaisons, we’ll continue to propose and place FWA Members as
speakers at the schools’ campus and alumni events and identify additional opportunities to raise
awareness of the FWA among each school’s graduating MBAs.

Promoting the Graduate Scholarship program more broadly to the general public via press
initiatives, either alone or together with additional FWA Ed Fund activities. Examples are press
releases and articles on our website, e.g., announcing the new academic year’s Graduate
Scholars, with brief profiles, and publicizing the new scholars on the FWA’s home page, Twitter,
Facebook and LinkedIn channels. Press releases can be directed to the general business press
and to each school’s campus publications.
Meet with each school to discuss its willingness to work with us on campus awareness,
especially among second year students, who’ll graduate in the spring and can join the FWA as
full or associate Members.
Meet with Baruch’s Dean re: the school’s persistent tardiness, for multiple years, in identifying a
recipient for the FWA scholarship, lagging months behind the other four schools. Baruch’s
delays limit the Baruch scholar’s ability to utilize the additional program benefits, aside from
dollars, including complimentary FWA events and the Liaison’s networking resources. This also
limits the FWA’s ability to promote the program.
Consider new ways to attract Graduate Scholars as FWA Members and new ways to engage past
Scholars who do not presently live in the metro New York area.

We want to continue to extend the organization’s mission by giving financial assistance to promising and
deserving young women pursuing business careers. In addition, formal and informal meetings, for both
scholarship programs, enable us to offer career guidance and networking opportunities to the next
generation of financial women, in keeping with our mission.

Leah Pfeffer-Lidsky, Undergraduate Scholarships
- Scholarships are awarded to qualifying Murry Bergtraum High School seniors who participated
in the FWA Mentoring Program and who qualify on the basis of academic achievement.
Qualifying high school seniors receive $2,000 for their freshman year and $2,000 for each of
their sophomore, junior and senior years; depending on funding. Renewal scholarships continue
to be subject to maintaining a 3.0 GPA in college.
- Since its inception in 1987, we have awarded over 163 scholarships to students and we continue
to seek a strong interest in the program.
- On January 7, 2014, the undergraduate scholarship committee hosted its annual reunion dinner.
This year’s event focused on us making our own pizza. We attended a demonstration then got to
throw our hands into it. It was held at Pizza a Casa Pizza School.

This year’s event focused on getting to reconnect. We wanted to focus on what we have done
recently and what was ahead for the current and past scholarship winners. A retrospective of
what the committee has done.
We have focused on the technique of networking and how that could be done effective in
different areas.
The Committee continued its efforts to keep its web page for the current and former scholarship
recipients accurate. This year, we have created a “google group” page for the current and
former scholarship recipients to interact, post messages, and provide support to one another.
The Committee through its new database continued our efforts to reach out to former
scholarship winners. The committee has been working aggressively to locate and strengthen our
ties with former scholarship winners, with our goal being to have them return and join the FWA
and get involved.
We continued to sponsor the Princeton Review scholarships for Murry Bergtraum High School
mentees, to prepare them for the SAT examination.
We are working with getting the second generation LinkedIn site up.
Recommendations for the Future
We will continue to focus on the circle of giving back to the FWA by recruiting more of the former
scholarship recipients to join the FWA. We also want to build stronger connects so that the students
keep in touch with us throughout their college and professional years.

Specifically, the purpose of the Strategic Marketing and Communications Committee is to:  Build brand awareness regarding the FWA  Raise the FWA profile to enhance the value of the organization to the membership, corporate sponsors and charitable donors  Use communications as a support mechanism for further engagement of FWA Members, donors, partners and sponsors  Add value to stakeholder relationships with FWA through use of diverse media Accomplishments/Highlights FWA Website:  Revised, rethought and reengineered the FWA website to reflect new messaging in a contemporary format and style; more importantly to highlight underappreciated aspects of the organization and brand value proposition  Rewrite of all pages and addition of a significant number of new pages with consistent voice and tone reflecting a youthful, vibrant and future‐oriented organization  Enhance opportunities for Member and sponsor engagement, as well as new Member acquisition  Selected a Web development team  Supervised website development efforts and approach  Started content development which Jamie Epstein completed  Consistency with mission, posting of non‐FWA events and criteria for strategic promotion NOTE: While all committee members participated in page rewrites and new format, special thanks is given to Jason Dodd of Magnesium Interactive for thought leadership and design innovation in what is certainly the most visible manifestation of the Committee work this year. Thanks to Jason, the website represents a “hub of communications” for the FWA and will increase social site posting and involvement among members. To Jamie Epstein, Manager of Member and External Communications, we give recognition and thank you for managing and completing the content development. FWA Public Relations, Newsletters and Various Communications 
Created a new messaging platform including a revised FWA boilerplate description and key messages emphasizing the organization's value proposition and educational programs. The new messaging was used on the FWA's redesigned website, social channels and in communications with Members, sponsors and other constituents. 
Led task force on communications and marketing relating to the FWA's Educational Programs. The task force recommended a dozen initiatives to strengthen awareness of the programs and their benefits, promote engagement among participants and sponsors and increase recognition of the FWA as a leader in providing opportunities at the high school, undergraduate, graduate and adult/professional levels. The task force also began a similar review for the Lenore Albom Giving Program. 
Edited or drafted more than 50 letters, articles, press releases, proposals and other written communications in concert with the FWA president, interim executive director and various FWA committees. Audiences for the communications included Members, prospective sponsors, the news media and the general public. NOTE: Special recognition and thanks to Co‐Chair Ray Pellecchia for the talent, creativity and hard work in weekly writing projects from the FWA President, serving as an extra pair of eyes that reviewed so many other projects and initiatives that are too many to detail here, and whose command of the King’s English resulted in great work products. Market Research:  FWA 2014 Member Survey. A daunting task, reducing a 2010 survey estimated at 45 – 90 minutes to less than 10 minutes; from 112 questions to 36; and from 28 pages to 8 pages. More importantly, the goal was to structure the survey tool to be more actionable in order to address the current issues facing the organization (member acquisition, retention and churn). NOTE: Thanks to Co‐Chair Cornelia Levy‐Bencheton who tirelessly and tenaciously led this huge project with the expert help of Lynette Lager, Tony Coretto, Joan Green and Ray Pellecchia.  Event Exit Survey. Revamp of the post event exit survey so as to focus on one key goal: be an indicator of event satisfaction (and event improvement) across multiple events. Prior survey was 14 questions in length and collected data that was no longer needed. New survey was shortened to 4 questions. Tone was redirected to being more friendly and conversational. Opportunity provided for feedback and questions. Redesigned survey: Cornelia Levy‐Bencheton and Ray Pellecchia. Social Media: Facebook: Manager, Bonnie Halpern Objective: To support brand awareness, attendance at events and the acquisition of new members, providing free publicity, public relations and exposure in support of the FWA’s larger objectives. Milestone Achievements: FWA “likes” grew year over year from 478 to 714 or 49% growth. Estimated value of impressions is 358,428 exposures through the viral effect of Internet. Particular note: “14 in 2014” (or 14 Reasons to Become an FWA Member in 2014) kept momentum going during the “dark” period of end year holidays when there are fewer events. LinkedIn: Manager Jean Cleary; Admin and LinkedIn Public site support: Julia Lehman Objectives: Expand the number of discussion posts and create a community of engagement for members. Milestone Achievements: Private Site Created and distributed “LinkedIn How To” Manual for all Committee Chairs; provided one‐on‐
one training for co‐chairs and Members on a routine basis to educate on posting to LinkedIn; expanded the number of unique “influencers” contributing to the site; created posting strategy for daily postings of the online auction surrounding the Annual Dinner; and extended pilot project with the Membership Committee to reach out to the “declines” / “non‐members.” LinkedIn FWA Member Growth Milestones
561 Members with a year over year growth estimate of 34%. NOTE: In March of 2014, guidelines for membership to include non‐paying Members in this group were changed (but not broadly announced) and thus opening up membership to anyone requesting to join who met the standard membership criteria (i.e.,: in financial industry with 4+ years experience or MBA/Masters with 2+ years). This has had a positive impact on requests to join that were accepted and we are recommending maintaining this admission policy going forward. LinkedIn Public FWA Company Public Page Milestones
Objectives: Run LinkedIn posts for every event prior & a day before event as well as post event marketing after the event. Post and publicize the “14 in 14” Membership Campaign to attract new Members from the public view newsfeed. Milestone Achievements: Public Site LinkedIn Public site followers increased by 37% from 1,140 to 1,559. LinkedIn Community Site for Three Next Gen Groups A significant new development to LinkedIn this year was the creation of a LinkedIn site dedicated to consolidating all FWA Next gen Communities active in the FWA into one unified place with the idea of mutual support for professional development, academic progress and FWA 2013-14 Annual Report

career and job search. By mutual support is meant graduates and MBA students helping college students and those in turn helping undergraduates. It was realized that the FWA has not kept track of students to whom we have awarded scholarships and other support. It was thought that keeping in touch would be beneficial to the students and graduates and for the FWA as these individuals could later recommend the FWA, become sponsors and Members in the future. Twitter: Manager Sharon Lewis Objective: Build brand awareness for the organization; leverage event promotion for registration purposes; maximize real‐time event highlights and energy; provide an additional source of engagement for the FWA Members, prospects and followers; raise the profile of the organization to the membership, corporate supporters and potential sponsors Twitter Achievements: Increased exposure for FWA events through pre‐event announcements; used to boost messaging for membership renewals; used to promote 14 in 14 membership campaign; create excitement during the FWA events through tweets that convey thought leadership, fun and “being in the right place;” the implementation of a consistent address across social media channels. Support of Specific Programs: Men’s Alliance: We supported a test program offering a tri‐part Public Speaking Workshop to see if it would generate and maintain Member support and interest and be financially profitable as well. The course was spearheaded and given by Nancy Ancowitz and Tony Coretto. Notably, Cornelia Levy‐Bencheton experimented with gamification techniques and developed a digital badge as certification of successful completion of the course. This badge is designed for being affixed to LinkedIn Profiles as a new skill. Image of the badge is here: Annual Dinner: Financial and communications support Silent Auction: Relentlessly posting in support of this new way of financing the Holiday Dinner event. International Trip to Berlin: Communications including posting messages and driving publicity for the annual trip helped make it a sold out event early on. “14 in ‘14”: This campaign was widely promoted by the Marketing Committee and worked in favor of driving membership increases. Recommendations for the Future FWA Website: Leverage capabilities of new website to profile, segment and target new Members; improve programming preferred by Members; expand the awareness and reach of the FWA among its various constituencies including Members, sponsors, President’s Circle firms and others. FWA and Education: Continue expanding the committee’s focus on supporting recognition of and participation in the FWA’s educational programs at all levels, both internally and externally.
