About the island of Mljiet:
Mljet is the largest island in the Dubrovnik
archipelago. It is an elongated island; 22
miles in length with an average width of
only 2 miles. It counts less than 1000
inhabitants, who are spread within the 17
villages that are located in the midst of
nature.
The northwestern part of the island is being
protected and was declared a national park
in 1960. The Time Magazine recently
ranked the island amongst the 10 most
beautiful islands worldwide. The rich
vegetation of the island explains why Mljet
is also known as the Green Island.
About Okuklje
Okuklje is a small village on the north side
of the island and counts 20 inhabitants.
It is a popular tourist destination for
nautical excursions, as it is located in the
most protected bay of the island, leaving
the marine life in its natural, lush
environment.
The nearest international airport is located
in Dubrovnik. Taking the ferry from
Dubrovnik to Mljet takes two hours.. A
ferry to Mljet also departs from Prapratno
(45 minutes), Rjieka, Split and various
islands.
