E-CIG CITY 949-715-5100 1970 S. Coast Hwy. Facebook.com/E-Cig City PHOTO BY WILLIAM D. ARMIJO Denmantau translates from an old German sailing term meaning "Let’s Go! All hands on deck." Paul Weber always knew he wanted to be a musician. As frontman for the band Denmantau, the trumpet becomes his extension allowing him to sing and feel melodies instinctively. Having learned classical trumpet at a young age he was able to continue the legacy of a man he Above: Paul Weber idolized from his village. The 5 member band left Hamburg, Germany busking the world as a way to travel, earn money and play live. They toured Australia, New Zealand and Europe before settling into their new home in California. They have been in LA over a year performing dates at the Troubadour, Whisky a Go Go and opening for Jefferson Starship. From the curbside of Ocean Avenue during the annual Fete de la Musique, local promoter Rick Conkey, was one of many stirred by Denmantau's unique sound. He quickly began booking them on a regular basis. Because Laguna is so artistically oriented, they always enjoy performing here. Whether it’s playing to thousands on a big stage or a small gathering in a parking lot the feeling is the same. Music should translate the emotion and energy of the songs to the crowd and Paul always reminds the audience to stay present, leave all distractions behind and feel what they are putting across. Primarily using photographic documentation, the project functioned as art and activism. The show's 1984 “Time Machine for Moving Stills” is a mixed media kinetic artwork, designed to display the 516-foot-long photographic strip produced from one phase of the project. The machine moves the long photograph so viewers can virtually “travel” the road as it passes from one end of the display device to the other. Yet of the Canyon Project’s 16 phases, the most impactful was Phase VIII, “The Tell,” a 636-foot-long photomural, erected in 1989 in Sycamore Flats, in what is today Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. Several large pieces from the original Tell — which was comprised of hundreds of thousands of individual photographs, donated by Tell supporters — are in this show. An interactive video, “The Tale of the Tail of The Tell,” with Tell images is also here. People who participated in creating or demonstrating at The Tell or who enjoy visiting Laguna Coast Wilderness Park are invited to participate by sending their photographs to be included in this video projection. Selected images will be used for a physical “Tail of The Tell” to be permanently installed at The Tell’s original site. Anyone wishing to participate may send images, no larger than 1 MB each, to [email protected]. Mediterranean Bistro The Stand N AT U R A L F O O D S 238 Thalia St. @ S.C.H. 100% Vegan 412 N.
