BOUT THE AREA
Welcome to the gently rolling hills, river valleys, forests and
ridges of Randolph County, the geographic “heart” of North Carolina! Randolph has been at the
crossroads of history since the 17th century, when explorers first arrived along the Great Indian
Trading Path. Every variety of religion, creed, and color could be found in the county from its
creation in 1779, with combinations that often proved volatile. From the Uwharrie Mountains in the
west to the Deep River Valley on the east, Randolph has been home to powerful opposing forces. It is a
county where potters are more common than doctors, and home to five of North Carolina’s first textile
mills, yet it remains one of the state’s leading agricultural producers. Its residents refused to secede
from the Union but sent six companies into Confederate service. Although settled by pacifist Quakers,
bitter guerrilla warfare pitted neighbor against neighbor in both the American Revolution and the Civil
War. A dry county that permitted no sales of alcoholic beverages, it fostered the racing spirit of NASCAR by running moonshine along its back roads.
Randolph is home to North Carolina’s 39th Governor, Jonathan Worth; Naomi Wise, immortalized in the traditional American ballad performed by
Doc Watson; NASCAR icon, Richard “The King” Petty; World Professional Bull Riding Champion, Jerome Davis; Rufus “The Beanshooter”
Hussey, whose notoriety took him to a famed appearance with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show in 1986; New York Times Best Selling
Author, Jerry Bledsoe; 2013 National Senior Games gold medal winner, John Q. Pugh, Jr.; Guy Troy, modern pentathlon gold medal winner, 1951
Pan-American Games; World Skeet Shoot Champion, Craig Kirkman; and birthplace of professional baseball player, Joe Frazier. Today it is best known
as home to the North Carolina Zoo, the nation’s largest natural habitat zoo, celebrating 40 wild years in 2014. Randolph is a county with a history,
politics, and people of vision and depth where locals welcome visitors with a generous spirit and North Carolina’s trademark southern hospitality!

elcome to Randolph County, the heart of the state of North Carolina and home to
the most beautiful zoological park in the country. The North Carolina Zoo is located in
the middle of a rapidly-expanding urban arc stretching from Raleigh, the state capital,
to Charlotte, the largest city and major U.S. financial center. In my 45 years in the zoo
world, having seen and worked with most of the major zoos worldwide, I can honestly
say that none of them approach the beauty of this site, both in its natural settings and
those that we have created.
At 2,200 continuous acres, we are the largest zoo geographically in the world giving
us enormous potential for expansion. With public concerns about keeping large wild
animals in small spaces, the Zoo will be one of the few zoos in the U.S. with the
space to exhibit elephants and other large animals in the future.
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary this year, we recognize our zoo as a state icon that all North Carolinians
can take pride in and look forward to connecting our visitors with wildlife and wild places in 2014.
Best regards,
Dr. David Jones, Director - North Carolina Zoological Park

Pottery Site 31 Located on the Mt Shepherd Retreat Center & The Austin
Lawrence House has woodwork and moldings made from the Greek Revival classical designs by architect Asher Benjamin (1773 -1845) as seen in his pattern books that were widely circulated in the first half of the
19th Century. After the Austin Lawrence family moved away around 1855, the Cedar Falls Mill Company owned the house and it was rented to various tenants for more than 100 years. 2383 Cedar Falls Rd, Franklinville – 336-318-6553 | Tours by appt only

significant as a result of its representation of a Piedmont Acidic Cliff ecological community. 1306 Andrew Hunter Rd, Franklinville –

1909 Randolph County Historic Courthouse 41
This historic structure, the third courthouse location in Randolph County, opened on July 12,1909. 1921 John Wesley’s Stand
42 John Wesley’s Stand
is Randolph County’s last remaining example of a once familiar sight: the open-air tabernacle or brush arbor. Started in 1903 by the Rev. J.F. Burkhead of Asheboro, worship was first held under a brush arbor
after which a small frame church building was erected in 1906. The tabernacle was built in 1921. The quartz rock pillars of the tabernacle are an echo of the popular Bungalow style of that time. 2921 Old County Farm Rd, Sophia – 336-318-6553 | Self-guided walking tour

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
isit Seagrove, the largest community of potters with the longest continual
history of pottery making in the United States. The ceramic history of the
area began with the abundant and diverse natural clay deposits found in the
area. Native Americans were first to discover this resource and used it for
both functional and ceremonial objects.
Throughout the 1950s, potters worked together to
promote the area. The 1960s and 70s were characterized
by social changes across America with the 1976 Bicentennial
Celebration bringing a renewed interest in handcrafts. The
development of ceramic arts programs by nearby community
colleges led to the training of many area residents, and
Seagrove potters continued to train their children or other
interested apprentices in their craft. Studio artists began
to settle in the area bringing visible changes to Seagrove
throughout the remainder of the 20th century.
In 1982, local citizens, recognizing the strength of continuing to preserve the history and heritage of their
craft, began to celebrate annually the weekend before Thanksgiving by organizing the Seagrove Pottery
Festival. This festival weekend has now grown to
include both the Seagrove Pottery Festival and the
Celebration of Seagrove Potters.
Today Seagrove is known as the handmade pottery
capital of the United States where artisans create
handcrafted pottery inspired by the same traditions
that began here more than 200 years ago. With
nearly 100 shops and galleries scattered throughout the area, you will find everything from traditional
tableware to folk and collectible art pieces and
historical reproductions.

The building of the old Plank Road, and later the emerging
railroad system, gave potters access to broad markets outside of their normal reach and helped to establish
Seagrove’s reputation as a pottery town. In the early 20th century Raleigh couple Jacques and Juliana Busbee,
who appreciated the local craftsmanship, used their marketing skills to promote Seagrove to an even wider
market and collectors began to embrace the craft. By the
late 1920s, Seagrove pottery was well-known from the
galleries of New York to the garden shops of Florida.
EAGROVE
The first immigrant potters,
mostly English and German,
arrived in the late 18th century
from Pennsylvania and Virginia.
They probably settled first in the
areas closest to the Great Wagon
Road, which ran from Pennsylvania
to Georgia, later migrating to
Seagrove.
