Randleman - Home of
Petty Enterprises Historic Site
About the Area
Find what’s in your heart by
exploring an assortment of museums
and attractions unequal to any other
area of North Carolina! From Petty
Enterprises Historic Site, birthplace of 10 NASCAR championships
to the North Carolina Zoo, the world’s largest natural habitat zoo;
American Classic Motorcycle Museum, including the largest private
collection of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles in the country;
Seagrove, the handmade pottery capital of the U.S.; Linbrook
Heritage Estate, home of Linbrook Hall, one of the largest privately
owned homes in the Southeast; and Kersey Valley Spookywoods,
named in the 2015 Top 10 Spookiest Haunted Attractions in the
U.S. by USA Today.
Festivals & Events
Celebrate with us at Christmas on
Sunset, in downtown Asheboro, the
Bush Hill Heritage Festival in Archdale,
and the Seagrove Pottery Festival all chosen as a Top 20 Event in the
Southeast by the Southeast Tourism
Society; and Liberty Antiques Festival,
voted the Best Antiques Show in the
Mid-Atlantic Region.
Outdoor Fun
Leave the stress of the city behind and
discover one of North Carolina’s two
remaining historic covered bridges, the
Pisgah Covered Bridge. Experience the
thrill of a lifetime on Richland Creek
ZipLine & Canopy Tour, voted a Top 100 Expo Adventure; and
Kersey Valley, North Carolina’s only aviation themed zip line.
Hike America’s oldest mountain range, the Uwharries or the Deep
River Rail Trail which follows the old railroad bed connecting
to the Deep River State Trail. Fish along 100 miles of beautiful
shoreline on Randleman Lake; or have “Dinner at the Dairy” at
Goat Lady, winner of seven national awards from the American
Cheese Society and recently reviewed in the Washington Post!
Arts & Entertainment
If you love live entertainment catch a
summer concert at Bicentennial Park
or Ramseur Lake; or a concert or play
at the newly renovated Sunset Theatre
in downtown Asheboro, home of the
2015 Sunset Cultural Series.
Golf
Play some of the area’s most beautiful
golf courses including 7th Hardest
Course in America, Tot Hill; Holly Ridge,
one of the Piedmont Triad’s finest 18hole public courses; Asheboro Country
Club, set in the beautiful Caraway
Mountains; and Asheboro Municipal, a public course designed by
the famed Donald Ross in 1935 – all located within an hour’s drive
from Pinehurst, home of some of America’s finest golf courses.
Sports & Racing
Our area is home to semi-professional
sports, and various recreational tournaments including the Bank of the
Carolina’s JV Holiday Classic, now the
largest JV basketball tournament in the
U.S., the John Blewett III Memorial
North-South Shootout at Caraway Speedway, and the 2015
American Legion Baseball Southeast Regional Tournament.
Vineyards & Wineries
Tour Zimmerman Vineyards, located
on more than 140 acres at the foot of
beautiful Mount Shepherd; and Native
Sons Vineyard, which faces WOW,
Caraway, and Daves mountains with
expansive views that have captured the
cameras of
professional photographer, Dan Routh.

BOUT THE AREA
Welcome to the gently rolling hills, river
valleys, forests and ridges of Randolph County, the geographic “heart” of
North Carolina! From the Uwharrie Mountains in the west to the Deep
River Valley on the east, Randolph is a county where potters have always
been more common than doctors; a dry county that permitted no sales of
alcoholic beverages yet fostered the racing spirit of NASCAR by running
moonshine along its back roads. It is the birthplace of Naomi Wise,
immortalized in the traditional American ballad performed by Doc
Watson; NASCAR legend, Richard Petty; professional baseball player, Joe
Frazier; and photorealist painter, Susan Harrell whose artistic 3-D relief
murals are now featured in downtown Asheboro and Commerce Square in Randleman. The area is also home to World Professional
Bull Riding Champion, Jerome Davis; New York Times Best Selling Author, Jerry Bledsoe; 2013 National Senior Games gold medal
winner, John Q. Pugh, Jr.; Colonel Guy Troy, modern pentathlon gold medal winner, 1951 Pan-American Games; and World Skeet
Shoot Champion, Craig Kirkman. Not only is Randolph’s location the heart of the state, but its locals welcome visitors with a heartfelt
generous spirit and North Carolina’s trademark southern hospitality!

he Petty Family Legacy is at home, sweet home! Petty Enterprises Historic Site is
proud to have opened the Petty Museum, Petty’s Garage and the Toomes-Petty House
in one location on Branson Mill Road, Randleman. The Petty Museum now presents
the unparalleled success story of my family’s stock car racing heritage, a business that
has had a fundamental formative influence on American motorsports and on automotive
design, construction, and safety. Now at Petty’s Garage, you can see where more than
250 race wins began in 1949, an up close experience for fans and auto aficionados alike.
But what I’m most proud of is the Historic Toomes-Petty House, birth place of my dad,
and me and my brother, Maurice. Designated by the Randolph County Historic Landmark
Commission in a special ceremony on March 12, 2014, my childhood home now includes
stunning history and family secrets of the early days of the Petty racing family.
Petty Enterprises Historic Site has been a real transformation for us. We continue to
improve each phase of this attraction to ensure that the all-new Petty experience is rewarding for fans of all ages! We
welcome you to the Heart of North Carolina, a place I’ve called home for more than 75 years, and hope to see you in 2015!
Best regards,
Richard Petty

isit Seagrove, the largest community of potters with the longest continual
history of pottery making in the United States. The ceramic history of the area
began with the abundant and diverse natural clay deposits found in the area.
Native Americans were first to discover this resource and used it for both
functional and ceremonial objects.
Throughout the 1950s, potters worked together to promote
the area. The 1960s and 70s were characterized by social
changes across America with the 1976 Bicentennial
Celebration bringing a renewed interest in handcrafts. The
development of ceramic arts programs by nearby community
colleges led to the training of many area residents, and
Seagrove potters continued to train their children or other
interested apprentices in their craft. Studio artists began
to settle in the area bringing visible changes to Seagrove
throughout the remainder of the 20th century.
In 1982, local potters and citizens, recognizing the strength of continuing to preserve the history and
heritage of their craft, began to celebrate annually the weekend before Thanksgiving by organizing the
Seagrove Pottery Festival. This festival weekend
has now grown to include both the Seagrove
Pottery Festival and the Celebration of Seagrove
Potters.
Today Seagrove is known as the handmade pottery
capital of the United States where artisans create
handcrafted pottery inspired by the same traditions
that began here more than 200 years ago. With
nearly 100 shops and galleries scattered throughout
the area, you will find everything from traditional
tableware to folk and collectible art pieces and
historical reproductions.

The building of the old Plank Road, and later the
emerging railroad system, gave potters access to broad
markets outside of their normal reach and helped to establish Seagrove’s reputation as a pottery
town. In the early 20th century Raleigh couple Jacques and Juliana Busbee, who appreciated the
local craftsmanship, used their marketing skills to promote Seagrove to an even wider market
and collectors began to embrace the craft. By the late
1920s, Seagrove pottery was well-known from the
galleries of New York to the garden shops of Florida.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
The first immigrant potters,
mostly English and German,
arrived in the late 18th century
from Pennsylvania and Virginia.
They probably settled first in
the areas closest to the Great
Wagon Road, which ran from
Pennsylvania to Georgia,
later migrating to Seagrove.
