Spring 2010 Hospice Annual Memorial Giving Report Camp Jess: Helping Children Through Situations of Grief Sioux Falls therapy dogs, Dizney and Dandy, pictured here, come to Camp Jess to meet children who are grieving the loss of someone close to them. Dizney and Dandy love to be petted and bring comfort to the children at camp. Camp goers come to have fun, to play, sing around the campfire, roast marshmallows, create a clay sculpture and tell each other about someone they love who has died. Camp Jess is a wonderful opportunity for children to realize their feelings of grief and sadness are shared by others. Their time at camp is filled with so much fun they barely realize they are learning healthy ways to grieve. Inside This Issue Hospice Cookbooks Memorial Gifts 2009 Caregivers at Sanford Hospice Aid Patient and Family Your donation to Sanford Hospice is very much appreciated. Each donation and memorial gift will be recognized yearly in our spring newsletter. Caregivers at Hospice Aid Patient and Family When facing the difficult news that a loved one has a terminal illness, Sanford Hospice will provide continuation of care from hospital to home. Embraced by an entire team of registered nurses, social workers, clergy and volunteers, patients will have an individual care plan to focus on their emotional, physical and spiritual needs. Recently, Jean Waldera spoke about the care her husband, Jerry, received during his home hospice care and this transition into one of the Sanford Hospice Cottages. “Before we moved Jerry into the Hospice Cottage, we had two volunteers who were absolutely lovely women. I could go get my hair cut, have lunch or just get out and have a little breathing space. I came home refreshed and that was important. I am particularly grateful to them because the care, love and the attention that they gave to Jerry was remarkable and lifted his spirits a great deal.” Jerry and his grandson. Jean says Sanford Hospice helped her understand how to take care of Jerry in the comfort of their home. “The caregivers at Sanford Hospice really helped me understand how to manage Jerry’s pain with medication, guided me in how to cope myself and what I needed to do to keep him safe,” said Waldera. When Jerry’s health declined, Jean and her family worked with the Sanford Hospice team to move Jerry into the Hospice Cottage. “The care he got 24 hours a day at the Hospice Cottage was way beyond what I could have done at home. I’m not going to name them all by name — there were so many…so many angels,” said Jean. Hospice care is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
