Level control
fully automatic
Op. no.
Equipping your car with Volvo’s fully automatic level control
offers the following advantages and features:
• Comfort even with heavy loads and no risk of dazzling other
road users.
• The car returns to its unladen height level automatically.
• Stabilises handling even when towing a trailer.
• Easy to install; no extra hoses or pumps.
• All functions built into the shock absorber.
How does it work?
Using the motion of the car between the axle and body it
pumps the shock absorber up to the unloaded level of the
car. It uses no extra motor or battery. It can do this at loads
up to the car’s maximum loaded weight. Each set of shock
absorbers is specified for a particular car variant. This ensures
maximum comfort and damping at all load levels.
Automatic level control gradually returns the car to its unloaded
level after about 500-1,500 metres.

Load carrier
general description
A flexible load system has been developed for the roof of your
Volvo. The basis of the system are the load carriers which
can carry 100 kg. These are simple to install, each Volvo is
prepared with mounting points in the roof. This is even easier
if your vehicle is equipped with rails.
With Volvo load carriers installed you can select from a wide
range of accessories, specially designed for each specific task.
If you wish to carry bicycles, there are bicycle holders which
carry them as safely on the roof as at the rear of the car. There
are a number of solutions for carrying snowboards, skis or
surfboards. All are equally elegant, and specially developed to
complement your Volvo safely and attractively.
All our roof carrier accessories are designed for maximum
simplicity, both when installing on the car and when loading
and unloading. No tools are needed, everything needed is
supplied in the kits.
Because all our different holders can be combined with each
other you can use your roof very effectively. At the same time
everything is safe while travelling and secure when stationary.
The “One key system” means that the same key is used for all
the products in the roof load program.

Volvo’s bag program
VOLVO LIFE
S40, V40
We offer a broad range of different bags for different needs,
both leisure and work.
The uniquely designed bags are available in three colours:
black, red or Volvo blue.
The bags are manufactured in comfortable, strong and
water-proof woven polyester. The Volvo name is discreetly
displayed on the easy-grip zipper tags.
The bags are PVC-free. All the matt aluminium-look metal
fittings are cadmium-free.
Reinforcements are in PP, ABS and leather for excellent
durability and protection against rough handling.
Reinforced and comfortable handgrips and shoulder straps.
Most bags are fitted with non-slip nylon studs underneath, to
add stability, protect the bottom against wear and keep the
bag above wet surfaces.
Most of the larger bags feature a practical mesh pocket and
hooks. These make it easier to find and keep track of keys
and other small items.
The luggage is dimensioned to make the best possible use of
the space in the luggage compartments of Volvo cars.
Extensive testing has been carried out to ensure the best
possible quality; resistance to fire, wear and UV-radiation
(fading), colour-fastness, as well as loading tests on handgrips
and shoulder straps.
The bags are easy to wipe clean using soap and water.

Volvo Navigation System, HU 1205 (RDS)
Big front radio / Navigator unit
S40, V40, 01-, EU
This is a system that shows you the way to your chosen
destination. The desired destination is selected by pressing
a few buttons. A voice will then give you driving instructions
in good time before each turning. At the same time further
information is shown via the display. This is known as
turn-by-turn guiding.
The screen in the centre console always shows your exact
position and displays your route in advance. A large arrow
shows which way to drive. You can choose to be shown the
shortest route or the quickest route.
In addition to choosing a street address as your destination,
there is a long list of other establishments to choose from,
including tourist sights, hotels and restaurants. In addition,
if you do not know the name of a restaurant you can search
through a list of the nearest establishments in the area. Volvo
dealerships are, of course, listed. Other useful information is
also listed, for example, telephone numbers and addresses
for a large number of other facilities. Personal destinations
can also be stored. If you leave your planned route, you can
automatically receive a new route.

Both hands must be kept on the steering wheel to drive safely!
The Volvo hands-free system makes it easy to drive and have
a telephone conversation at the same time.
The cradle is beside the radio unit for easy access and to
make the telephone easy to handle.
This location also satisfies Volvo’s stringent safety
requirements for collisions.
The telephone is easy to secure in the cradle, which connects
the microphone, the external antenna and the loudspeaker
in the passenger door.
When in the cradle, the telephone battery also charges so that
the telephone is always ready for use when you leave the car.
When changing telephones, the system is easy to update by
only changing the cradle.
Telephone without an external antenna socket can also be
used.

Child seat
ISOFIX
S40, V40
Safety for our smallest, but most important passengers is
something every parent prioritises when selecting a child seat.
For us at Volvo, it was a natural step to conduct our own
development work to keep us at the forefront when it comes
to keeping our children safe.
ISOFIX
ISOFIX is a new standard for mounting child seats in cars.
This attachment is primarily developed to prevent incorrect
fitting of the seat in the car, which is the most common cause
of injuries involving child seats!
Volvo’s latest child seat is designed to work with ISOFIX
attachments. There are two different models depending on the
child’s age and weight.
This child seat is unique in many ways. For example, you can
use it as a rear-facing seat with ISOFIX attachments up to 18
kg, or about 3 years of age. The seat has been tested in side
impact collisions and is even equipped with a unique head
guard that protects the child’s head from penetrating objects in
the event of a collision.
This seat has received universal approval for seatbelt
mounting, so it may also be fitted in cars without ISOFIX
attachments. The seat must then be secured using the car’s
seatbelts.
If the ISOFIX attachment is to be retrofitted to the car, it must
be ordered separately. To locate the attachments when the
supporting frame is fitted, an ISOFIX guide is used. This
guides the supporting frame’s ISOFIX lock into the correct
position. Correct locking is indicated by a colour marking
above the supporting frame.
The child is secured using a 5-point belt, which is easy to
adjust thanks to a common lock for all the adjusting straps.
The ISOFIX child seat consists of four main components:
•
•
•
•
Child seat frame
Infant seat, up to 10 kg (Group 0).
Child seat, between 9-18 kg (Group 1).
Straddle legs, for fitting in the outer rear seats.
NOTE! Both seats require the supporting frame when fitting.
Infant seat
The infant seat offers practicality in that it is easy to remove
from the supporting frame and is equipped with a handle. This
allows you to take the child with you, still in the seat. The infant
seat offers a comfortable sleeping position. The baby insert
is an excellent addition for newborn babies, providing extra
support to the head and body.
Child seat
On this variant, you can adjust the seat between a more
upright sitting position and one that is more reclined. Thanks
to this feature, an older child, who often wants to sit more
upright when awake, can be kept happy. When it is time to
130
Op. no.
sleep, one simple operation adjusts the seat to a comfortable
sleeping position.
Accessories common to both seats are a sun shade, kick
guard with storage pockets, textile storage bag and a child
seat mirror.

• Service mode (certain markets only). Possible to temporarily
disconnect the alarm in conjunction with service. Reset at
next reactivation (see manual).
Sensors. The following sensors can be used separately or in
combination with:
- Glassbreakage sensors
Deployed when a window is broken. Functions like a
microphone, set at the same sound frequency that occurs
when car window is broken. Good protection against thefts
from cars.
- Ultrasonic sensor
Deploys the alarm when the air pressure in the car is altered,
e.g. when movement is detected. There are two detectors
on each B-post, turned both backwards and forwards in the
passenger compartment for maximum protection. A valuable
addition to the basic equipment.
- Tilt sensor
Triggers the tilt sensor if the position of the car changes, for
example in the event of attempted wheel theft or if the car is
towed away.

3544 554-3
A fuel-driven parking heater ensures that the car is warm when
you need it, irrespective of where it is parked. Starting an
engine that is already warm means:
• the car will emit less noxious exhaust gases.
• the passengers sit in a warm car, reducing the risk of
catching a cold,
• there is no need to scrape ice from windows,
• the car consumes considerably less fuel,
• engine wear is reduced.
A new generation of heater has been introduced in the 912-B.

Electric engine heater
general description
Op. no.
S40, V40
With an electrical engine block heater and cabin heater, the
car is warm to sit in when it is cold outside.
Starting an already warm engine subjects the engine to
less wear, uses far less fuel and therefore reduces harmful
emissions.
Information for the 230-volt system
It is a complete kit, consisting of a heater element which
is fitted to the engine and a small front hatch. The small
dimension of the front hatch ensures:
• Simpler installation. Drilling a single hole
• No sawing or other machining required.
• Separate kits for the front engine block heater socket not
required.
• It is easier to position both aesthetically and ergonomically.
• Simple design.
The system can be supplemented easily with the passenger
compartment connector socket.
Important
The ideal preheating time with an electric engine
heater is 2-3 hours. This is enough to raise the temperature of the engine to 30-50°C above the outside
temperature. After that the temperature does not
increase and the electric current (and your money) is
used only to maintain the temperature. Output: 500
W.

Volvo aluminium rims
general description
S40, V40
Aluminium rims reduce the suspensions’ unsprung weight
compared to steel wheels of corresponding size. This makes
it easy for the suspension and shock absorbers to ensure
that there is good contact between the wheels and the road
surface. This makes for better road holding and greater driving
pleasure. However a smart design is not sufficient for an
aluminium rim to be approved as a genuine Volvo rim.
– The material is important!
An aluminium rim consists of several different metals mixed to
provide the correct properties. The slightest negligence would
result in a brittle wheel. The wheel rim would easily crack
when in contact with kerbs or other similar obstacles resulting
in a puncture.
– Thermal dissipation properties
The rim must be well ventilated and have good heat dissipation
properties, suitable for all cars. Unsuitable combinations can
occur that endanger important safety functions such as the
cooling of the brakes.
– Anti-corrosion agent
Several non-Volvo wheels do not have good protection
against corrosion, which means that they quickly lose their
attractiveness.
Volvo aluminium wheels are painted with 3 layers and a clear
varnish as the outer layer. All wheels also have a chromed
base to increase protection against corrosion.
– Centring on the hub
Most non-Volvo wheels are compromised in design to suit
numerous cars. This means that very often they are centred
against the wheel studs. This makes for poor centring and
results in imbalance. This together with wide tyres is a very
uncomfortable combination for the owner.
Volvo aluminium wheels are centred on the hub with extremely
small tolerances. In combination with small lateral run-out and
roundness tolerances, this ensures good wheel balance.
