with a two picks, a shim,and a spacer wire. The shim is used to insert
the pick and turn it to the correct position, and then it is removed. The
shim is also used to remove the pick once the lock has been picked.

What do you mean by Cipher Lock?

Most of us have heard the term Cipher Lock and think we know what it means. But do we? I think it means different
things to different people. I know in my experience when I hear the term cipher lock, or see it in a specification,
there are always more questions that need to be asked to make sure that what is requested, matches up with what
is delivered. Most of us categorize a Cipher lock as a push button lock of some sort. So what is a Cipher lock by
definition? Well, that depends on where you look. Again there are multiple answers in multiple places. Military.
com defines Cipher Lock as, “An electronic security device that releases an electric door latch when buttons are
pressed in a correct sequence”. I have read in multiple places, that the US Army only uses what they call cipher
locks to allow access during duty hours, but still relies on keyed locks for physical security.
So by general definition, a cipher lock could be any mechanical or electronic device with a keypad that allows access to a secured area.
Any of the locks below could be considered a cipher lock.
Another common misunderstanding is the use of the word Cypher. Notice the spelling difference? Cypher could be used interchangeably
with Cipher, and quite often it is. Cypher is the British spelling of Cipher, but it is also a specific type of Access control system by a
Company called Continental Instruments, now owned by Napco. One of the most common of these locks is the Model S100. Pictured
below is a keypad often used with this system. It consists of 5 rocker switches in a metal housing, a power supply, and a control Box.
This keypad was commonly used with a lot of different locks; one popular pairing was with the S & G Brute Lock in Post Offices.
On a funny side note, when I used to run across these keypads installed on the exterior of a building,
back in the 80’s and 90’s, I was amazed at how many had cigarette ashes or cigarette butts in them. I
guess they looked like an ashtray to some people. That’s a pretty pricey ashtray!
The next time you hear or see the term cipher/cypher lock, you will know that there are usually more
questions needed to figure out what is actually needed. In most cases, the person just needs some
sort of access control, but what type and what features are needed, still needs to be determined. Do
they want mechanical or electronic? If they want mechanical, there are many choices. A few common
choices available are Kaba, (often referred to as Simplex or Unican, both being prior manufacturers of
the same lock), Codelock, and Lockey. Mechanical locks are great, and meet most needs for a cipher/cypher lock. Kaba 5 button locks
offer 1080 possible combinations and other brands like Codelock, which have 13 buttons, offer up to 8,191 possible combinations. There
are a couple of big differences between mechanical and electronic cipher locks. Mechanical locks typically store one code at a time,
whereas electronic locks could have many codes stored in them at the same time, as well as different levels of access.
As you can see, the terminology surrounding the phrase “cipher lock” can be quite broad and have different meanings for different
people. For most, I believe the most common meaning is a 5 button push button lock. In that case, narrowing down exactly what
they need is a little easier. If they are looking for more features such as, an audit trail, timed access, different types of credentials, and
different levels of access, then that is a whole different conversation about access control.

The LockStraw is a bi-directional spray straw that
applies lubricant and cleaner directly to the wafers of
a lock. Standard spray straws are directed at the back
of the lock, which is an inefficient method for delivery
of the lubricant. The LockStraw eliminates waste and
directs the lubricant where it is needed most, on the
wafers and wafer chambers.
Additionally, when removing a plastic straw from a
door lock, the lock shutters can gouge into the plastic
straw. This makes extraction of the straw more difficult
and may leave plastic shavings in the lock. The
smooth finish on the brass-tipped LockStraw reduces
friction, making the removal process much easier.

Our Kaba Mas X-10 spindle alignment tool is licensed exclusively to Lockmasters from the DoD
Lock Program. This tool ensures the spindle is completely seated into the drive cam so that the

Tube Measurement Tool
This is a hands free tool designed to precisely mark
the protective cable tubes supplied with all X-07, X-08
and X-09 locks to the correct length without using the
actual lock preventing possible damage to the ribbon
cables and back cover. The tool consists of a plate
which is made to the same dimensions of the lock
case. Magnets on each corner hold the tool on the
container. It has a built-in scribe to mark the outer
tube to the proper length.

Pedestrian Door Lock Opening Tool
Lockmasters’ Pedestrian Door Lock Opening Tool is a non-evasive tool that requires minimum
