National Night Out
By Ivy Reid
he 28th annual National Night Out
kicked off its event on August 2, at
Walnut Recreation Center located
at 3075 North Walnut. An estimated 3,500
to 4,000 people made an appearance
at an entertainment- filled scene that
was not to be missed. A Flashmob, UFC
fighter, Jason Reinhardt, young martial
art performers, a live band, a DJ, a
contortionist, and Tyco drummers all
comprised to captivate everyone who
was present. The event was combined with
Lawrence Weekly’s “Back to School
Fair.” Well-known local businesses, such
as Target, were a national sponsor.
Panda Express provided 3,000 platters
of food, Meadows Gold handed out
over 2,000 ice cream bars, Food 4
Less and Quality Towing shared in
donating more than 3,000 bottles
of water, Ready Ice and Coca Cola
supplied ice and additional drinks.

Volunteers from local churches such
as Calvary Chapel Spring Mountain
and Grace Baptist Church were very
gracious to offer their time to assist
In the event. Carnival games, a train
ride, grills to cook hot dogs were also
contributed by local churches. Shots
4 Tots and UNLV Dental School were
present to tend to the health needs of
the children, while parents received
important information from other
vendors. NOTB Apparel supplied 500
T-shirts, and Republic Service donated
the use of large dumpsters for trash.
The collection of personalities,
organizations, sponsors, and people
gathered to promote an anti-crime
stance for the community. The
intended message was to encourage
partnership between citizens and
police so that neighborhoods feel
empowered to fight crime.

Steve Abell, Berto Hernandez,
Mike Ward, Marvin Minushkin,
Peter Gripon, Debbie Damron,
Jean Richmond, Sue Ruggieri and
Dick Bennett were present during
the event and performed several
duties. They assisted in keeping
the lines organized during the
Back Pack Fair and escorted
the children as they exited the
gym after receiving backpacks.
Erin Blakely, Crime Prevention
Specialist, is full of appreciation
towards the volunteers and
knows these events could not
be successful without their help.
“METRO’s volunteers are the
best! We couldn’t do what we
do without them. They are here
to help because they want
to, not because they have to.
They are invaluable members
of our METRO family whose
enthusiasm and willingness to
help is outstanding. Last year the
Northeast Area Command won a
national award for our “National
Night Out” event. Our goal was
for this year’s event to be even
bigger and better and believe
it was. We hope to win another
award this year. Wish us luck!”

such as crime and drug prevention awareness was distributed to all
present. Metro Volunteers: Rolando Pascual, Art Raz, Ruben Delgado,
John Murphy, Jeff Cox, Jim Stork, Mike Bercseny, Mickey Moore, Linda
Ulrich, Brad Overfield and Richard White assisted in the Vin-Etching,
including passing out crime prevention information. McGruff, Aka
Justin Williams, even showed up for photos with children and adults.
“I always appreciate the MVPs and all the assistance that they give
us. As always their help was invaluable,” commented Justin White, a
Community Oriented Policing Officer.

NNO in Small Towns

Ten Reasons to Spend National
Night Out in Searchlight. 1. The weather - fifteen degrees
cooler than Laughlin
2. Trees and grass
3. Many organizations - Metro, Metro
Volunteers, Park & Rec., Coast
Guard Auxillary, Park Rangers,
EMS, Fireman, etc.
4. Information
about
the
organizations present
5. Large percentage of the town
participates ( over 150 people).
6. Handouts for all
7. Games for the children
8. Games for the adults (Metro vs.
Fireman)
9. Plenty of food - hotdogs, chips,
drinks
10. A great time to socialize and to
learn about the community.
Metro Volunteers: Dottie Lewis,
Jesse Lewis, Elden Thayer, and LaDell
Yarbrough took advantage of these
reasons and assisted at Searchlight’s
National Night Out.
Metro Volunteers also helped at
Laughlin’s National Night Out. These
Laughlin Goodwill Ambassadors were
Johannah Grieco, John Grieco, Bob
Boerner, Ted Brandes, Duane Dotson,
Tom Hewitt, and Arnie Wetzstein.

W
hat is the best way to
promote
sportsmanship
and health fitness among
law enforcement and firefighter
personnel? Why not assemble a
weeklong sporting event. Caesar’s
Forum Shops, Dr. Steven Thomas of
Thomas & Bigler Knee & Shoulder
Institute, Henderson and Las Vegas
Harley Davidson, Coca Cola, Las
Vegas Convention and Visitors
Authority were just some of the
major sponsors of the 35th Annual
Nevada Police & Fire (NPAF) Games
held August 2nd through August 6th.
Over 1,800 people took part in the
excitement, including entertainment
and food provided by McMullens
on August 4, and a tribute to the 10year anniversary of 9-11 on August
5 celebrated during the games
along with 97.5 HOT VEGAS and
Big League Dreams Sports Pack,
who also promoted the games. The
NPAF Games Championship POLICE
vs. FIRE Charity Ice Hockey Game,
held at the Fiesta Rancho Sobe
Ice Arena, and the NPAF final 2011
party at GILLEY’S, inside the Treasure
Island Hotel & Casino on August 6,
concluded the festivity.
The MVPs were a true asset to the
events by assisting in the registration
and check-in process. Roger M.
Rasch, President of the N.A.P.F.
(Nevada Police Athletic Federation),
host of the yearly Nevada Police
& Fire Games in August, and a
Northwest area command police
officer, gives credit to MVPs: Joyce
Nuss, Rosemary McCall, Celia
Olson, Art Raz, Wally Cox, Flo Cox,
Bernie Siebert, Lennie Capricciuolo,
Felix Saha, Susan Young, Milt Collins,
Rose Clavel, Sarah Sanchez, Chris
Williams, Lulu Abercrombie, Lou
Borelli, Paulette Vuolo and Annie
Haglund for contributing to the
smooth operation of the games.
“The MVPs were a valuable asset to
the success of the 2011 games this
year, and they were a tremendous
help with registration. Every year
we have those in Police & Fire that
like to register/check-in the very last
minute, which puts a burden on the
staff working the games. This year
was no different but due to the
assistance of the MVPs we were
able to keep the lines down and we
were better able to assist everyone.
We had no complaints of long lines
or long waiting times for assistance.
Again thanks for stepping up and
volunteering your time to make the
games a success again for 2011.
I know the MVPs took time out of
their personal and family time to
dedicate themselves to the games
and it’s greatly appreciated. On
behalf of the board of directors
and coordinators we are very
Thankful.”

MVPs “Perform” at Super Summer Theatre
By Milt Collins
I
f ever there was a win-win-win
situation in Las Vegas, the Super
Summer Theatre (SST) is it. Couple
cooler evening temperatures and
beautiful surroundings with very
affordable ticket prices and superior
theatrical performances and you
can easily see why SST has been
attracting devoted fans for the past
36 years.
Located at Spring Mountain
Ranch State Park, the theatre
offers four musical productions per
summer, one each month from July
through September. Local theatre
companies are chosen to produce
the shows, and all performers
appear without compensation. The
productions receive critical acclaim
on a regular basis, assuring a steady
flow of satisfied theatre-goers.
A total of 20-24 volunteers are
present at each performance to
guide and assist patrons, direct
parking, sell and collect tickets,
and man the concession stands.
Metro Volunteers assist at two of
the performances each month
along with other volunteers,
many of whom are members of
the Theatre’s 33-person Board
of Directors. They undertake
a variety of tasks, including
passing out programs, renting
lawn chairs, organizing blankets
at the “meadow,” and serving
refreshments at the concession
stand. This summer’s MVPs include:
L to R: Susan Young, Joe Baroletti, Celeste Baroletti, Penny Bensyl
Dick Bennett, Milt and Sally Collins,
Patti Luthy, Joe & Celeste Baroletti,
Susan Young, Penny Bensyl, Mike
Bercseny, Debbie Goodwin, Steve
Taylor, Terry Taylor, Bernie Siebert,
Janet Delaney, Lilia DeCelles, Elsa
De Los Santos, Lulu Abercrombie,
Lynne Favazza, Larry Wagman,
Lonnie Wagman, Said Buelna,
Joyce Nuss, Wendy Park, Marvin
Minushkin, Penny Bensyl, Bill Kleiser,
Sheila Voy, Janet Delaney, Said
Buelna and Joyce Nuss.
The wild burros who inhabit
the Red Rock Canyon area, site
of Spring Mountain State Park,
are occasionally seen and more
often heard during performances.
Judging from the enthusiastic
response of the patrons, SST is a Las
Vegas institution that is destined
to attract audiences for years to
come. According to SST Volunteer
Coordinator Dee Thorn, MVP
volunteers have become a key
element in providing a comfortable
and enjoyable experience for
Las Vegans who appreciate wellproduced, well-directed, and wellperformed musical theatre.
