St Katherine’s School Newsletter
______________________
Volume 4: No 06| 18 December 2015
Dear Parent/Carer
A huge congratulations to our Sixth Form students who have participated in the Senior Maths Challenge again this
year. Two have achieved Silver and another student Bronze. We have included a couple of questions so you can
understand the level of challenge – but set your timer and try it under pressure!
Our artists have been equally busy and have produced some stunning results which we are also shared in this newsletter.
The last two weeks have been busy in lots of ways, not least our annual inter-house winter sports competitions. Netball and
rugby have dominated the school and it was great to see the sporting talent from our Year 7 looking as secure as our other
year groups. An extra special congratulations to the Year 9 netball team who have won their recent round of the Westport
leagues after beating St Bede’s, Orchard School and Clevedon. The team progress to the semi-finals in the New Year.
And finally, ‘Into The Woods’ has dominated the lives of our Performing Arts staff and students for the last two terms. After
watching the final evening’s performance, I was left feeling extremely proud and moved by the hard-working ethic of our
students. The characters were played expertly with humour and style. The singing was challenging and well executed by a
number of very hard working musicians and the chorus, as ever, spectacular. Thank you to everybody who was involved this
year giving up many hours of their own time to make this happen – and a special mention to Olivia Hinde for leading her first
show at St Katherine’s. Thank you.
I wish you all a very happy Christmas and New Year celebration. School re-opens for students on Tuesday 5 January 2016.

Our Year 13 students studying A-level mathematics at St Katherine’s have achieved some fantastic results in this year’s Senior
Maths Challenge; of the four students entered, two achieved a Silver, one received a Bronze and one narrowly missed out by
just one mark on a certificate.
Our highest achievers were Ollie Gedge (Silver and Best in School), Thomas Scanlan (Silver) and Archie Sharp (Bronze).
The Senior Maths Challenge is run by the UK Mathematics
Trust and aimed at those students in Year 13 and below.

Year 9 students have recently produced some fantastic final pieces inspired by Bristol based artists, Emily Ketteringham and
Emmeline Simpson. Students have worked both from observation and their imagination, explored a range of media and
looked at different cityscapes around Bristol and produced individual, colourful and vibrant final outcomes. Well done Year 9
Art students!'

Students visited the Holburne Museum
recently and discovered sculpture from
eighteenth century works in bronze and marble to Japanese artist Nahoko Kojima’s intricate floating three dimensional sculpture cut by hand from a single sheet of paper. They will create individual works in paper which will form part of a larger class
installation. The day was a huge success and the Education Co-ordinate at the Museum commented ‘it was a pleasure to
have St Katherine’s at the Holburne, the students were impeccably behaved and produced the most wonderful work. I'm so
pleased that they and you enjoyed it.

7 & 8 Sportshall Athletics
St Katherine’s students at their very best as athletes and leaders
With the dark evenings well and truly upon us, St Katherine’s traditionally turns host to the North Somerset annual sportshall
athletics competitions. This year we are hosting the 7 & 8 and the 9 & 10 competitions for the north schools. Arguably these
events create the best atmosphere and this year was certainly no different as Wednesday 9 December turned out to be one of
the noisiest evenings the sportshall has seen for quite some time!
The events always have the same format; they start and end with relays involving both girls and boys. In the middle there is a
hectic main period of girls’ and boys’ track and field competition and then the grand finale where athletes all come back
together for the closing relays! Students at St Katherine’s always seem to excel at the field events and this year was no different.
Each team puts forward 2 athletes to cover the 5 events: speed bounce, standing long jump, standing triple jump, vertical jump
and shot put. If you take into account the field results alone, St Katherine’s enjoyed a huge amount of success. Despite their
prowess in the field events the races that take place on the track are always a huge challenge for St Katherine’s students as they
compete against some serious club runners. The standard of competition is always extremely high and tests the runners to their
physical limits.
Year 7 Boys
At the halfway point the Year 7 boys were in joint first position with some exceptional individual performances in the field.
Charlton Milligan smashed the shot put throwing an impressive 7m16cm to take second place. Charlton was one of only 2
athletes to go over 7 metres. Tony Tanner blitzed the speed bounce taking joint first place with an incredible score of 77! Jazper
Peacey also showed his explosive capability with an impressive score of 53 to win the vertical jump outright. Having given their
all in the field the Year 7 boys really struggled on the track and unfortunately their competition had caught them up by the end
of the evening. Although they were disappointed, the boys should take a huge amount from their successes in the field events.
Year 7 Girls
The Year 7 girls enjoyed their first experience of sportshall track competition with a great set of team performances. All of the
athletes gave their all with the pick of the runners with Daisy Tiley taking third place in the 2 lap race with a great time of 25.2
seconds. The girls really upped their game for the second half of the competition in the field. Two fantastic scores in the speed
bounce, 77 and 76, from Molly Jackson and Amelie Purvis brought home a vital 10 points for 2 second place finishes. Alongside a
number of third place finishes the girls finished with a very respectable overall total at the end of the evening.
5
Year 8 Girls
The Year 8 girls started their competition on the track and know first-hand from last year how tough the competition is!
Nevertheless, the girls were not deterred and all of the team really gave their all in their respective events. Despite their best
efforts the girls had no choice but to come out firing for the field events. They did exactly that with some fantastic individual
performances! The girls in the speed bounce, Josie Maskell and Priscilla Lumuso, scoring an impressive 73 and 65 respectively
earned them 2 silver medals! Alongside a couple of third place finishes, the girls closed the gap on their competition but
unfortunately could not catch them up!
Year 8 Boys
Having finished in an agonising third place and narrowly missing out on a spot in the finals last year, the boys were determined
to go one better. Starting off in the field they knew this was their main strength and they certainly did not hold back sitting
comfortably at the top of the standings at the halfway mark! Joe Harvey nailed the speed bounce with an amazing score of 82
and Ashya Gray took gold in the standing long jump with an incredible jump of 2m48cm – an incredible half a metre better than
his closest competitor. Perhaps the standout performance of the evening again came from Ashya Gray in the triple jump who
posted a phenomenal 6m86cm to the amazement of his competitors and watching members of staff! Ashya finished a metre
clear of anyone else at the top and earned valuable points. A first place finish from Bailee Farley in the vertical jump and a silver
medal from Henry Welch in the shot really put the boys in a great position.
Knowing they would be caught on the track, the boys needed to dig deep. They did just that with a couple of second place
finishes from Bailee Farley in the 2 lap race and the duo of Henry Welch and Will Conroy in the 8 lap paarlauf race. With the
penultimate race out of the way, things could not have been closer! Clevedon were out in front on 97 points and St Katherine’s
and Backwell were tied for second on 95. With one relay to run and 12, 10, 8 and 6 points on offer, it was all still to run for! After
a monumental effort from some extremely fatigued runners, the boys watched Backwell cross the line in first taking 12 points
and moving their total to 107. St Katherine’s were closely behind earning 10 points taking their total to 105 and unfortunately
for the boys, Clevedon grabbed third spot earning themselves 8 points meaning they too finished on 105.
The boys will have to wait for the results from the south schools event before they find out if their efforts have been enough to
earn a place in the finals.
Year 10 Leaders
As you may have noticed in the photos, there was a group of Year 10 BTEC Sport students who kindly volunteered to lead at the
event. The leaders led younger students in Years 7 and 8 through their track and field events. The students are very early into
their BTEC course and have not yet covered any leadership content other than during their KS3 PE lessons. They were given a
short briefing before the event on their roles for the evening and took to them brilliantly. They were responsible for measuring
and recording the scores of the younger athletes in different events as well as ensuring their safety and giving competitors tips
on how to do well. St Katherine’s always has an extremely strong pedigree of young leaders and this year was no different. Not
only was the quality of their leadership recognised by St Katherine’s PE staff, it was mentioned by all members of staff from
across North Somerset and the athletes who were participating in the competition.

10 Boys Football v Worle
Year 10 boys suffer unlucky defeat in first round of Somerset Cup

On Friday 11 December the Year 10
boys travelled to Worle School in
Weston-super-Mare to contest the first
round of the Somerset Cup. Due to the
time of the year the boys played under
lights on the school’s artificial 3G pitch
which was a great experience – if you
can’t play football on that surface then
you can’t play football!
The game started at a good tempo and Worle started to move the ball freely into and out of the midfield area but with no real
intent just looking to settle into the game. Within the first minute the St Katherine’s midfield intercepted a stray pass and instantly
looked to move the ball forward. A perfectly weighted pass put through Finley Smith who had made a great run from midfield.
Pulling the ball away to his left to create an angle, Finley cut the ball back across the goalkeeper who was well and truly beaten. The
boys, Finley included, began to celebrate but only to watch the ball strike the base of the post and teeter on the goal line.
Just minutes later another through ball from midfield released Jude Noon who instantly showed his turn of pace. Jude also cut away
to the left and cut the ball back across the goalkeeper with his right foot again striking the base of the post. This time the ball ended
up well and truly across the line! Five minutes into the game the boys were one goal to the good and enjoyed their lead. They
maintained their tempo and just minutes later Noon was again put through and found himself one on one with the keeper in an
almost identical position. Jude’s shot struck the base of the other post this time and looked for certain as though it had crossed the
line but the goal was not awarded so play continued.
Worle were still enjoying the majority of the possession but the St Katherine’s defence was well organised and cleared up on any
loose balls. The midfielders were tracking their runners well. Jay Spicer in particular was making himself a nuisance in the middle
and Dan Young was adapting his performance brilliantly considering he was playing out of position. Despite all of their possession
Worle were unable to create any real chances. Although nothing clear cut had gone through keeper, Mason, was called into action a
couple of times late in the first half but stood up to the test well.
With just 10 minutes to go until half time, a break down the left dragged defender, Conway, across his penalty area as the covering
defender. The winger cut across Danny and released his shot from close range which struck Conway’s hand. Although his hand was
by his side you couldn’t argue that the ball had hit his hand, although Danny and the boys felt the decision a little harsh.
Nonetheless, the Worle penalty taker did not hesitate and put away his spot kick well to level the game up just before half time.
Worle came out the stronger of the two sides in the second half and began to mount more attacking pressure. St Katherine’s coped
well with the pressure but were unable to really settle into the half. They had the odd spell of possession but fair to say that the
momentum was with Worle. When the boys did get hold of the ball Jude Noon was the main outlet. Jude had relished the ball over
the top in the first half but came to show feet more often in the second half and this variation kept the defenders guessing. When
the ball made it to him Jude held the ball up really well and gave his team mates chance to push up. About half way through the
second half Worle were awarded a corner kick which Mason came and punched clear. So often in football the bounce of the ball will
dictate and when this clearance landed at the feet of a Worle player who obliged by lifting the ball over the crowded area and into
the back of the net.
As this was a cup tie the boys quite rightly decided to throw bodies forward in attempt to get back into the game. Smith and Spicer
pushed forwards to give Noon some more support and the boys began to cause problems for the Worle defenders although leaving
themselves susceptible to the counter attack. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts the boys could not find a way back into the
game despite coming close on several occasions. Spicer and Smith both had shots from range that tested the keeper but he was up
to the challenge. Worle broke quickly on 2 more occasions late in the second half scoring 2 goals with some clinical finishing in the
last 5 minutes to kill the game off.
The end result was perhaps not the fairest reflection of the contest but the boys all agreed that the losing margin made little
difference in a cup game and it was the right decision to try to get back into the game. There were several contenders for man of
the match. Jay Spicer was very busy in the midfield alongside Dan Young who had a great game out of position. However, without
doubt, Jude Noon had one of his best games for the school. He was a constant threat, worked tirelessly up front on his own and
showed excellent close control when the ball was played in to his feet. He scored one great goal and was very unlucky not to have a
second.
Although that is the last of the Somerset Cup for this year, there will be more football this year for the boys and regular training
sessions will start up across the school after the Christmas holidays.
Well done gentlemen.
Mr Cook

Year 8 Football County cup vs Maiden’s Beech (H)
St Katherine’s Year 8 boys football team played their first game of the season in the Somerset county cup against a tough
Maiden’s Beech team that had got to quarter finals of the same tournament last year. Although this was the case there was
optimism that they had a strong squad and could equally compete against them.
Maiden’s Beech started the game at real pace and were quick to stamp their authority on the game with some fluent passing
and movement. Finn O’Rourke and Sam Williams did well at the start to stifle the speedy right winger who looked dangerous.
Goalkeeper Joe Harvey made a couple of crucial saves to deny the visitors’ centre forward who tried to shoot at every opportunity.
Maiden’s Beech pressure finally paid dividends when a hopeful cross evaded everyone and nestled in the back of the net. This
was a disappointing way to concede a goal but the boys were determined to get back into the game. This was not to be the
case as the midfield duo of Eli Smith and Morgan Tiley managed to get a grip of the midfield and start to dominate proceedings. Although this was the case St Katherine’s were unable to make the break-through and went into the break 1-0 own.
The second half saw St Katherine’s come out of the traps and play some fantastic football. The boys managed to get back into
the game when centre half Alex Wilson tapped home from a corner. Evan Anstey who was brought on as a sub then scored a
wonder goal from the edge of the box after fine work from Morgan Tiley who was starting to pull the strings in the midfield.
This did not stop Maiden’s Beech and they quickly equalised with a scrambled second goal. Morgan Tiley then showed a moment of class with a wonderful piece of skill as he turned the defender and fired the ball into the corner of the net. Yet again
though, Maiden Beech replied with another mistake at the back allowing their fast centre forward to score. Tiley was dominating the game with excellent hold up play and worked well with Anstey to score another lovely goal.
At 4-3 and 10 minutes to go St Katherine’s looked to be home and dry but Maiden’s Beech were not to be denied and 2 quick
goals in the last 5 minutes gave them the victory. A disappointing result for the boys but they could take heart from their second half performance against a strong Maiden Beech team. This result would give them plenty to work on after Christmas but
the confidence to go on and perform well as a team.
Man of the Match- Alex Wilson- a rock at the back and showed a real calm presence.

Year 7 North Somerset Netball Tournament
Year 7 A Team
The Year 7 netball tournament was held at Backwell School on 8 December 2015. Two sides were entered to
represent St Katherine's School.
The 'A' Team competed against strong opposition from across the county. The team performed brilliantly,
finishing middle of the group. Captain Molly Jackson led her team superbly, with outstanding performances
from both Chantelle Hawkes and Amelie Purvis.
Two victories against Hans Price (2-1) and Churchill (3-1) were bolstered by 2 solid draws versus Gordano (1-1)
and Backwell (1-1) brought a well deserved total of 16 points. Defeats to Priory, Clevedon and Worle, all top
sides, meant that no further points could be added to the total. Fourth position was a richly deserved reward
for the team’s efforts.
A Team: Freya Barnett, Anida Bonomo, Chantelle Hawkes, Molly Jackson (cpt), Edith Powell, Amelie Purvis,
Annika Rugman, Taylor White
Year 7 B Team
The 'B' Team were not to be overshadowed by the performance of the 'A' Team. They found themselves in a
large pool of 11 teams. This tournament also contained some strong opposition, including 3 'A' Teams.
Captained by Emily Broad the team performed in outstanding fashion, with brilliant performances from Ruby
Argo and Lucy Turner.
Four victories against Backwell B (1-0), Hans Price B(1-0), Clevedon B (1-0) and Churchill B (2-0) put the team in
a very strong position. This was supplemented by draws against Broadoak (1-1) and Worle B (0-0). The
finishing points total for the team was 26. Losses to Sidcot, Gordano B, Priory B and Nailsea did not reflect the
determined performances from all team players in these matches. 26 points resulted in a finishing position of
fifth.
9
Both teams represented the School and themselves in an exemplary manner, showing competitiveness, team
work, fairness and a true sporting spirit. This was a fitting conclusion to the netball season.
B Team: Ruby Argo, Emilie Broad (cpt), Isobel Buchan, Sophia Llewellyn, Lara Roper, Lucy Turner, Evie Williams.

U14 girls win WESPORT leagues and progress through to area semi finals
Hosting the pool event, the St Katherine’s side had been drawn against St Bede’s and Orchard
School from Bristol and local North Somerset school; Clevedon. With St Bede’s withdrawing from
the competition the team faced 2 games to determine their success and progression through to the
next round.
Having trained hard every Thursday lunchtime, the 5 players; Bo Marshall, Lauren Dun, Amy tanner,
Megan Griffiths and Tara Harvey lined up to face their first opponents, Clevedon. Both teams
started slowly and had many missed opportunities. The game was end to end and some excellent
steals and interceptions were made. Lauren Dun particularly picked up a number of steals and this
gave possession to Tara Harvey and Bo
Marshall to press the Clevedon defence.
Eventually the deadlock was broken by
Lauren and the points then began to flow
for both sides. Amy Tanner carried the
ball well and Tara Harvey used her speed
effectively to break free of the Clevedon
defence. Lauren and Bo both made
some key rebounds to regain possession
and give St Katherine’s the edge. The
final score was 10 – 8 to St Katherine’s
and player of the match was voted as Bo
Marshall.
11
In their second game the girls faced Orchard
Academy and knew a win would be enough to
see them through to the next round. However,
it was Orchard that started strongly and scored
an early shot to take a 2- 0 lead. The girls
needed a boost and a reenergised Megan
Griffiths scored a fantastic long range effort to
draw level. From here there was no looking
back by the St Katherine’s side and they started
to score freely, moving the ball through the
Orchard defence with ease and scoring points
freely. Bo Marshall was on target and scored a
number of shots supported well up front by Amy
Tanner, whilst Lauren and Tara held a strong
defensive line and gave little away for the Orchard side to take advantage of. The final score was 28
– 4 to St Katherine’s and player of the match was again voted as Bo Marshall. The girls now progress
onto the semi finals and are awaiting to find out who their opponents will be.
Christmas Netball festive fun!
A big thank you to the extra curricular netball teams who have been training in their masses this season. All 3 year groups
had really successful seasons this year. The Year 7 squad grew in numbers throughout the season and had some excellent
results in fixtures, with an excellent effort in their recent county tournament. Year 8’s introduced some new players this season and they went from strength to strength, particularly in fixtures in which they beat a lot of the local schools. The Year 9
team had another season of being undefeated in fixtures and were unlucky to miss out on being crowned North Somerset
Champs.
On the last training session the girls enjoyed some festive fun, playing in mixed teams to Christmas tunes and were treated to
cake and hot chocolate. Awards were given by staff for the best trainer and most improved and players voted for their player
of the season.
Both myself and Mrs Price would like to thank all those girls that trained hard and played so well throughout the season and
look forward to next year!
Happy Christmas!

Winter House Sport 2015
Boys do battle on the rugby pitch and girls on the netball court for the final set of house
points of 2015
In the penultimate week of term students from across Years 7 to 10 took part in house competitions to contest the final set of
house points for the calendar year. As a long term draws to a close what better way to finish than with some sporting highlights
where St Katherine’s students are yet again at their very best.
Year 7 Boys Rugby
Unfortunately for the Year 7 boys they were unable to experience the taste of outdoor house rugby due to the weather
conditions at the time of their event. Rather than cancel the competition all together the boys went inside to compete in a
wacky tournament – St Katherine’s very own version of indoor rugby!
Jupiter house were captained brilliantly by Louie Dun who has already showed his skills on the rugby pitch. The boys on his team
really started to work together well and nail their short sharp passing. Finley Belcher, Brandon Geater and Seb De Montfort all
combined brilliantly with their captain to work the ball towards the scoring area. All action, Finlay Belcher, was a real attacking
handful on the mat and contributed a significant number of tries towards his team total. Josh Reeve and Tom Evans used their
height to great advantage in defence meaning that at the end of the afternoon Jupiter house had won 2 and drawn 3 matches
earning themselves 9 points.
Max Andrews led Mars house who were able to turn out a good number of the rugby team. It didn’t take long for George Turner
to get into the action and he was in his element with quick passing. Fergus Creton also combined well with Finley King in attack
meaning that Mars house scored 3 tries in all of their matches. Unfortunately, they were unable to stop their opponents from
scoring at the other end and so ended up winning just one game but drawing 3 matches earning themselves 6 points.
Tom Evans diving for the scoring mat!
Charlton with perfect passing technique!
Tony and George head to head!
Mercury house gave perhaps the best team performance on the afternoon and were captained really well by Ethan Emery. The
boys in this house seemed to love every minute of the frantic action and it was great to see so many smiles. Karnell Coleman
was never far from the action and was without doubt in the wars! He did pick up several tries for his troubles though. Although
Mercury were 100% into every game they just could not get that win. It seemed whenever they scored the opposition went right
down the other end to cancel it out. Eventually Mercury were left with 4 draws and therefore earning themselves 4 points.
Saturn house enjoyed the most successful afternoon of all clinching first place. The boys in this house are captained by Jazper
Peacey and he is fortunate enough to have a huge collection of talent to rely on. Beau Gilbert and Charlton Milligan are both
great athletes and in combination were a deadly duo. Max Dixey kept things solid defensively, which gave Subeer Elmi a free
attacking licence. He scored a hat full of tries to earn his team 4 wins and 2 draws and therefore a total of 14 points.
It was a real pleasure to officiate the Year 7 boys first major house competition and great to see so many improving throughout
the afternoon. The real secret to success in this event was the teamwork that was demonstrated by all 4 houses.

Mars v Mercury- 0-1
Mercury began the tournament with the first centre, but through a forced error, Mars obtained passion of the ball. It was
Mercury who had the first shot which was followed by a further 2 attempts. Finally, after the fourth shot, Freya Barnett scored
the first goal of the match and tournament. Having conceded the goal, Mars came back hungry to put their own mark on the
game. Despite every effort, and w shots on goal, it just wasn’t Mars’ day and Mercury was triumphant.
Saturn v Jupiter- 1-0
It was Saturn’s turn to take control of the game, winning the toss and choosing to take the first centre pass. Much of the first
few minutes of the game were spent with the ball yo-yoing up and down the court. The first shooting opportunities came from
Jupiter who had several attempts but, perhaps through lack of confidence, couldn’t develop it into a goal. It was a close game,
with both sides’ defensive players being placed under pressure. Towards the final whistle, Saturn took a quick free pass which
caught Jupiter on the back foot, leading to Maddie Hastings scoring the only goal of the game.
Jupiter v Mars 2-0
Following on from their first match, Jupiter’s second game clearly showed that they had warmed-up and it didn’t take long for
the defensive players to link with the central players and advance the ball into their shooting ‘D’. Two goals followed and Jupiter
quickly took the lead with Ruby Argo and Beth Edwardes each scoring. Although Jupiter took their second victory of the
tournament, it has to be said that there was some great individual defensive performances by Leah Milkins, Chantelle Hawkes
and Taylor White.
Mercury v Saturn – 2-1
Within the first minute of the match, Lucy Turner had scored an impressive goal for Mercury. This followed with a Jupiter centre,
but was quickly intercepted by Saturn and another attempt at goal was made. It was quite clear to see that there was a great
partnership starting to develop between Lucy and Daisy. Despite great defensive play by Amelie Purvis and Molly Jackson in
Saturn, Lucy scored her second goal of the game, and fourth of the tournament. Saturn game back hungry to make their mark
on the game and with only 2 minutes remaining, Molly scored! The final score was a reflection of the game, with Jupiter winning
2-1.
Mars v Saturn 2-0
Saturn had the advantage by winning the toss up. Unfortunately, this was short lived and Mars intercepted their third pass.
Chantelle demonstrated her dedication to Mars by throwing herself on the floor in an attempt to maintain possession. Saturn
had several near misses by Amelie and Molly but Andia’s rebounds meant Mars regained possession and allowed the ball to
progress up the court which led to both Chantelle and Taylor scoring within minutes of each other.
15
Mercury v Jupiter 0-0
The last game of the tournament meant that Mercury and Jupiter had everything to play for. Mercury had the first centre pass
and the first scoring opportunity. Sophia Llewellyn made a fantastic interception for Jupiter which resulted in a scoring
opportunity for Maddie and Ruby in the fourth minute. This seemed to be a recurring theme throughout the game for Jupiter
and it felt as if it just wasn’t going to be their day. At various points during the match, there was a mini game between Lucy and
Daisy, representing Jupiter as GS and GA, and Idman and Grace representing Mercury’s GK and GD. Due to the latter’s’
determination, Mercury managed to hold Jupiter and the final whistle resulted in a goalless game.

Year 8 Boys Rugby
The turnout for the Year 8 boys rugby competition was absolutely phenomenal! Boys from across the entire year group arrived
to compete on Friday morning so much so that we couldn’t fit them all in to the changing rooms! It was great to see so many
boys demonstrating the confidence to give it a go. An incredible 61 boys in total turned up which is 80% of the year group – a
fantastic job from the house captains: Henry Welch, Joe Harvey, Finn O’Rourke, Reece Palmer and George Hayward.
Unfortunately, the Year 8 boys were not able to finish their competition on Friday morning due to an injury (thankfully the
young man was checked over and given the all clear). The Year 8 boys dealt with the difficult situation in a really mature manner.
Thankfully the boys were able to finish their competition in the last week of term but had to settle for second best, indoor
wacky, due to the weather.
Despite their best efforts Mercury house just could not make it to the final whistle in their matches in front. Having been ahead
many times in their matches their frustration began to grow. The boys had to work really hard for every single point and nobody
embodied this spirit more than Sam Williams. Sam played all of his matches with a real smile on his face and his performance
level was brilliant scoring 2 tries. Harry Belcher chipped in with 2 more scores and captain, Finn O’Rourke, was resolute in
defence but despite all of their efforts Mercury finished in fourth place.
Saturn finished just ahead of Mercury at the end of the competition with some impressive individual scoring. Charlie Hayward,
Felix McGovern and Alex Wilson all managed to notch up 3 tries each but this doesn’t do any justice to the excellent defensive

work of Zubair and house captain, Palmer. George Hayward was an excellent link man between the Saturn attack and defence
and proved to be instrumental in their performance.
Jupiter house narrowly missed out on top spot losing out on try difference after winding up level on 18 points with Mars at the
end of the competition. It has to be said that Henry Welch led the boys from his house brilliantly and really brought out the best
in his house mates. Ashya Gray was a scoring machine notching up 4 tries in total for the morning but Jupiter also had a solid
defensive outfit which allowed their attacking players to shine. Jupiter boys drew with Mars in their A and B matches so can
consider themselves unlucky runners up overall.
Mars therefore clinched the top spot due to their try difference. House captain Joe Harvey was resolute in defence and singlehandedly stopped a number of tries. The real difference between Mars and Jupiter was the scoring colossus, Connor Coleman.
Connor proved unstoppably clinical in his finishing, racking up an incredible 11 tries for the morning – the measure of this
achievement is that he scored 5 more tries than the next top scorer Brodie Storer who also hails from Mars house!
Very well done to all of the boys for their efforts on the morning and congratulations to all House Captains for adapting so well
to some last minute changes in the competition format!

Mars v Mercury 1-3
Mars and Mercury opened the round robin tournament with an end to end game. Mars took an early lead Ava Heglar scoring
with an early attack. Mercury had a couple of attacks into their circle but could quite convert these chances. Niamh Scanlan did
convert one of the attacks to draw level. From this point Mercury began to dominate play and the attacks into their circle
became more frequent and the attacking duo of the ’Scanlan sisters’ Niamh and Lois converted their chances well both adding a
goal each to make the final score 3-1 to Mercury.
Saturn v Jupiter 3-0
17
Saturn set out their intentions early against Jupiter, dominating possession and making numerous attacks into their shooting
circle. Eventually this pressure paid off and Stella Crocker gave them an early lead. Stella made this 2 after some determined
mid-court play from Lucy Robertshaw (WA) and Ellie McCarthy (C). Saturn were awarded a free pass following an off side
offence in the end third, a slick passing move resulted in Stella Crocker getting her hat trick and putting the game out of reach
Saturn v Mars 4-1
Mars made some tactical changes of positions to try to counteract the attacking threat of the unbeaten Saturn. Mars had some
great early possession thanks to some great link up play and interceptions from Emily Drohan (WA), Grace Brown(C) and Jazzy
Pither (GA). Unfortunately, they couldn’t convert this into goals, due to some stout defending by Saturn’s Izzy Fielding (GK) and
Ellie McCarthy (GD). In contrast Saturn converted each of their opportunities to score with the on form Stella Crocker giving
them a 3-0 lead. Mars finally managed to convert on an attack with Jazzy Pither scoring. Some great interplay from Abbie Wring
(WA) and Molly Peppin (GS) created a final opportunity for Saturn with Molly slotting the ball away to make the final score 4-1.
Saturn unbeaten and claiming the Year 8 inter house netball crown.
Jupiter v Mercury 3-2
In the final game a win for either side would see them confirmed as runners up in the competition. The game started with both
teams evenly matched and 2 quick goals at either end making the score 1-1. Both teams continued to create chance but neither
had a clinical finisher in the circle. Ruby Webber was unlucky with a shot that rolled around the rim and then bounced out! She
made up for this with her next shot taking a 2-1 lead. This seemed to galvanise Mercury and they started to dominate
possession with Niamh Scanlan extending the score to 3-1. A quick break from Mercury saw Maisy Atkins pull a goal back in the
ending minutes, making the final score 3-2 to Mercury.

There was a great turn out for the Year 9 house competition, the Year 9 girls have a strong netball pedigree and the afternoon
promised much. The competition was a round robin format, giving the girls the opportunity for lots of games.
Mars v Mercury 2-0
18
through the centre court. Emma Gedge finally broke the deadlock to give Mars a 1-0 advantage, the goal seemed to settle Mars
and they became more dominant. One goal quickly became 2 when Jasmine White scored. Mars couldn’t extend their advantage
and the game finished 2-0.
Saturn v Jupiter 1-4
The frantic theme continued in the second game. A fast break for Saturn resulted in an early goal scored by Lauren Toms.
However, from the resulting centre pass Jupiter executed a slick attacking routine and levelled the score with a goal from Jupiter
house captain, Bo Marshall. This goal put Jupiter in their stride and they quickly took the lead and extended it with 2 well taken
goals from the on form Goal Shooter, Hannah Chapman. Saturn’s opportunities were limited but a good fast attack saw Lauren
Toms shot narrowly miss. Jupiter continued to create chances with Hannah Chapman high on confidence trying her luck from
any distance. This paid off with her putting the game beyond Saturn and claiming her hat trick!
Saturn v Mercury 4-1
After their frenetic opening games, both teams settled into a calmer more purposeful second game. Lauren Toms opened the
scoring early for Saturn. Ella Burgess brought Mercury back into the game levelling the score at 1-1 after some nice build up play
from her team. This really jolted Saturn and they found an extra gear and dominated the remaining time. Lauren Toms claimed
her hat trick by converting 2 more well worked opportunities in quick succession. Megan Griffith finally put the game beyond
Mercury with her first goal of the competition making Saturn comfortable 4-1 winners.
Jupiter v Mars 5-1
With both teams winning their opening game the fourth game in the round robin was expected to be a fiercely fought
encounter! Both teams had made changes to their teams from the opening game and it was pleasing to see all girls given the
opportunity to represent their house. Mars took an early led with a good finish from Lauren Dun. This shook Jupiter into action
and they became the better team making better use of their possession to make their way into their shooting circle. With Bo
and Hannah still high on confidence shooting from anywhere, Bo converted a long distance shot to draw level at 1-1. Using this
momentum, Jupiter quickly jumped to a 3-1 lead. Lauren Dun got one back to make it 3-2 but Jupiter ran away with the game in
the later stages, whilst Mars seemed to lose composure and commitment and resulting in a 5-2 victory for Jupiter.
Jupiter v Mercury 3-2
Jupiter started their final game knowing that a win would see them crowned champions. They sailed into a quick lead with 2 fast
goals from their on form attacking pair of Bo and Hannah. Mercury had rejigged their line up to try and combat the threat of
Jupiter, moving Ella Burgess into centre to try and cut off the flow into Jupiter’s attacking circle. This tactic worked well and
Mercury got a goal back with Mai Griffin converting a chance. Great defending from Tara Harvey continued to limit Jupiter but
Bo Marshall took her opportunity well to make it a 3-1 led. Mai Griffin score again for Mercury to set up a tense end to the game
but no further goals meant Jupiter ended up narrow 3-2 winners.
Saturn v Mars 1-0
With Jupiter winning all of their games the final game between Saturn and Mars meant the victors would end up claiming the
runners up place and valuable house points. In a very tight game with not much to pick between the teams, again nerves and
some tiredness started to show. The game was fought in the mid court with neither team really able to make decisive attack
plays into their shooting circle. The deadlock was broken late into the game when Megan Griffiths scored to claim the runners
up spot for Saturn.

Year 9 Boys House Rugby
What better way to kick the competition off than with perhaps the most energetic and exuberant year group in the school! Such
is their character that they really set the tone for the week of competition and epitomised all that is great about our house sport
competition. The boys’ rugby competition got off to an absolute flyer with tries in both first matches within the opening minute!
45 minutes of rugby later and the competition had seen 37 tries in total with a whole plethora of different scorers.
Saturn house were perhaps favourites to take the title, having been victorious for the 2 years previous. However, this year
proved not to be the case as they were beaten by Jupiter and Mars. Matty Crutchley put in a very strong performance for his
house and showed himself to be a real handful. Matty scored all 4 tries as his house beat Mercury 20-0, which was perhaps the
19
best individual achievement of the afternoon! Linus captained his house mates really well throughout the afternoon and guided
them to third place.
Mercury went into the competition feeling very confident as they had a number of players who have enjoyed very good
performances in the 15-a-side season. Despite Belcher and captain, Stratton, scoring an impressive 8 tries between them they
were still to pick up points going into their final game against Jupiter. Some dogged determination from all of the boys in the
house inspired by the unrelenting Stratton meant that they were able to crash over in the final play of the final game to secure
themselves a draw and much needed consolation.
At the start of the afternoon the boys would have predicted that Mars and Jupiter would be battling for second place. These 2
evenly matched houses came up against each other after both winning their opening matches and a surprise result meant that
Mars house had the upper hand in the competition from that point onwards. Mars have a great combination of physicality in
Hastings, Johnson and Baker complemented by the skill and guile of Harris and Pearce. Add to that significant contributions from
Penketh, Warsame and Molnar and you have a very well balanced team. Winning all 3 of their matches, scoring 75 points and
conceding just 15 the Mars boys were very deserving of maximum points.
Jupiter were very unlucky runners up and a number of their players had standout performances. Dexter Mott and Matteo Prime
have both come on leaps and bounds this year and what 2 better individuals to lead the house in the role of captain and vicecaptain. Matt Parsons showed his physicality on the team and put in several punishing hits to stop his opponents behind the
gain line and Kai West demonstrated his sporting prowess linking up well with his team mates. However, without doubt the
performance of the afternoon for Jupiter house came from Kieran Phillips; strong, determined and an incredibly well balanced
runner, Kieran showed himself to be a real handful on the rugby pitch.
Year 10 Girls House Netball
Tuesday afternoon saw the Year 10 girl’s netball house competition. There was again a great turn out for what would be the
girls’ last opportunity to play netball for their houses. It was fantastic to see a wide range of abilities taking part and making a
commitment to play. As a faculty we enjoy competition but seeing such high rates of participation amongst the year group is
even more rewarding.

Saturn and Mars began their games at a fast pace, with both terms sharing possession and having chances to score. Mars took
an early lead through Maddie. Freya Gorely and Megan Andrews had their work cut out in the defence with the confident sharp
shooting Maddie Watts trying shots from any distance! This led to a sublime shot from distance for Mars to take a 2-0 lead into
half time. Saturn began the half with fresh resolve and Morgan McDonnell showed her ability and scored 2 goals in quick
succession to level bring the game back to a draw.
The final match of the competition saw Jupiter take on the unbeaten Mercury. Mercury’s class showed and they took an early
lead through GS Peri Devlin. Jupiter’s defensive pair of Rhiannon Parkhouse and Maia Ogborne worked tirelessly in defence
against the persistent Mercury attacks.

Year 10 Boys House Rugby
The Year 10 boys are an able group of rugby players and so it was no surprise that their last house rugby competition was going
to be fiercely contested. In previous years Mars have run away with the competition but such is the improvement of the boys
this year that all of the houses fancied their chances. A special mention should go to Saturn house in particular as over the 3
years they have lost more than their share of players but still managed to turn out more than other houses.
The first match of the competition was considered the main event as Jupiter took on Mars. Jupiter really fancied their chances
and why not with the players they have in their team! The opening minutes in this game proved decisive with Lewis Mason
crashing over from close range. The Jupiter response simply involved looking for too much contact and their hopes of competing
were dashed when they lost their opener by 20 points. Things went from bad to worse for Jupiter house despite some fantastic
individual efforts. Jude Noon and Finley Smith both weighed in with impressive contributions. Finley made some tough hits in
the tackle and Jude broke the line several times only to be left without support. Most credit should go to house captain Tom
Green whose leadership was outstanding when things just did not go the way of his house. Jupiter ended up finishing third
securing 2 points.
Mars on the other hand went from strength to strength and were only really tested against Mercury house. The versatility of the
players in the Mars side is possibly their secret to success. Mason and Mott are an effective combination of back row forwards
who are also very handy in the loose and Jay Spicer can be just as effective hooking as he can at stand-off. When you factor in
the valuable contributions in the backline of Dan Young and Leon Paul you have a very effective unit. Mars ran out winners for
the fourth and final year earning 4 points in the process.
21
All the signs for Saturn house looked good this year as they had a healthy squad going into the competition. Their results against
Mercury and Jupiter were really close and only decided by the odd try. It was great to see so many boys representing Saturn and
making valuable contributions. Max Conroy in particular was the standout for this house enjoying scoring for his house as well as
defending. Max picked up a number of compliments during the afternoon which was lovely to hear; especially when you
consider he only recently broke his arm!
Mercury house were the real surprise of the afternoon finishing in second place with some boys really upping their performance
level to meet the challenge. Mercury have several team rugby players but more significantly Josh Cotterell, Chris Sirrell and
Harry Wilkes really made significant contributions despite not playing regular rugby. Perhaps spurred on by captain, Kai
Stephens, who would also not consider himself a rugby playe,r the boys took real motivation from his leadership and stepped up
themselves. Highlights of the afternoon included one particular tackle made by Harry Wilkes and several tries from Josh
Cotterell!
Final Results
