Dear Friend,

••
It is brave of your to want to help out your friend. Prior to
you considering doing so you should know that this conversation is a very sticky one, and could potentially be a column/
book of its own. Just be thoughtful about the words and
ways you present any feedback about the types of men she
dates. If you two have a strong relationship she might take it
well. If you feel her case is worth the risk then dive in!
As for the advice to give to your friend…
A
11) You should never go into a relationship thinking that
the person you meet “could” become someone great.
th
People should not be asked to change who they are for
P
yyou. You either like someone for who they are, imperfecttions and all, or you don’t.
22) In my observation people who pursue relationships
with “fixer-uppers” are looking for a bit of positive
w
aaffirmation themselves. They might be slightly depressed
or feel that they are not worthy of anything better than
o
what they currently have. This, tied to the hope that they
w
ccan “save” another person, motivates them to keep the
relationship going amidst lack of additional chemistry.
If this sounds like your friend, you can take a role of
affirmer. Help put her in social situations where she can
see herself as desirable. This might help her realize that
there are more options in her world than she may have
previously admitted.

••
••
While I admire your interest in your coworker, I do
have to second your sentiments that this is a very
touchy area to pursue. I would encourage you to
think this through very carefully before you even
decide to say anything to her of any flirting tone.
A lifetime of awkward water cooler conversation is
not worth it unless you truly feel this has a shot, and
you know she feels similarly. If you do feel that this is
a worthy endeavor I would provide you three words
of the most ultimate importance. Take it slow.
You as her friend will get the chance to hear all about the
good times and the bad with every man she meets which
is
one of the perks of your role. Just remember that all you
can do is care for her, let her know you support her and
keep giving her opportunities and support to find that
guy that she has not yet opened her eyes to. Trust me, he
is out there, When she is ready she will find him.
With your support it will be difficult for her to settle for
less than she deserves.
Be very careful about any physical actions you take
with her, nothing is harder than working with someone you fooled around with and regretting it later.
Lets make sure this relationship is going to go somewhere first.
Hey Doc,
Dear Infatuated,
3) Fixer-uppers also typically have an edge to them that
draws those seeking excitement and risk. Women love
them for the same reasons they love chocolate and trashy
television shows, because they shouldn’t. This excitement
is probably fun, unpredictable and even thrilling at times
which enhances the draw. The unfortunate beauty of this
unpredictable fun is that it is as unpredictable in good
times as in bad. This volatile opportunity is too much to
turn away given the chance to be “the one” who turned
this helpless case of a man into a winner!
IIf you decide to talk to her about this, be very careful
with your words. You do not want to be point blank
with her at first. Delaying any awkward work moments is of your utmost priority. Just ask her if she
wants to join you and some friends (ideally other
work friends) to hang out some night after work.
Find a social setting that is non-threatening for the
group and try to get to know basics about each other
so you can get a vibe for how she responds to you. If
you feel good about your interaction, decide on a very
casual setting for the two of you to chat in private.
In the off chance you do end up getting the opportunity to go on a date with her and things do not go
well, the best course of action for you is no action.
Let her go on with her life, and you do your best to
go on with yours. Continuing to pursue something
that is not mutual rarely ends up in success. Let her
go. Just remember to contemplate your options and
the residual effects of the potential of you moving
forward with pursuing her. If you feel there is a
chance, take it slow and see what happens. If you get
bad vibe from her, walk away. There are plenty of
women out there for you to date that you don’t work
with. Be patient and you will find one of them!

Iowa Duo Joe & Vicki Price
Appear at Whistle Binkies
Iowa blues duo Joe and Vicki Price
will bring some blues to Rochester, MN
on September 28th, performing at
Whistle Binkies Olde World Pub (North).
The Dweebs are a six-piece variety rock band
from the Twin Cities metropolitan area. This
family band features Michael Blue, his daughter
Claire and son Benjamin, all on lead vocals, and
son Mike Jr. on the drums! T-Bone Coen plays
keyboards and Trevor Radtke plays bass.
This couple zeroes in on the very seeds of
American roots, folk and blues. Joe combines
driving rhythms, a reedy, raggedy rasp of a voice
and exquisitely distilled tunesmithing–’selling’ it
all with such meticulously-crafted (if sometimes
pointedly raw) guitar picking
that even his instrumentals
seem to tell discernible tales.
Joe inhabits classic blues
standards as if they were
favorite shirts, his own deep
and varied bag of original
music is so formidable that
noted Grammy-award nominated singer/songwriter
Greg Brown has long referred
to Joe as “the Buddha.” Right
from jump-street, the electrifying sound of Joe Price hits you
in all the places you live.
He is a one-man blues tornado who can pack,
command and wring-out a dance-floor with the
authority of an eight-piece show band.
Vicki Price brings her own songwriting and
soulful vocals to the stage, playing second guitar
to her husband in an exchange that has been
The Dweebs’ high-energy brand of entertainment continues to appeal to people of all ages,
making the band a favorite at festivals throughout the region, as well as corporate events, weddings, fundraisers, night clubs and other events.
Come and see for yourself why The Dweebs are
the “ultimate party band” and one of the top
draws in the Midwest! Join The Dweebs at
The Westfire Grille 2043 Superior Drive NW,
Rochester on Saturday, September 22nd at
9:45pm. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the

manufacturers. He and Vicki received the honor
of appearing in the National Resophonic Guitar

received endorsement from the Samick
Company, one of the world largest producers of
musical instruments. Joe will be doing workshops across the country for the Greg Bennett

are Travis Liffrig, Chad Murphy, Jake Trogstad,

these events offer Rochester and surrounding
areas the fastest growing sport in the nation.

Battle at the Barn 21

The barn battles first began when Jami Klair,
an accomplished ultimate fighter now living
in Hastings, thought the Rochester area
presented a good fan base for the shows.
With so many athletes from the area participating in MMA, he figured there had to
be some good support. He quickly learned
the ropes of promotion, and started having shows in the horse barn at the Olmsted
County Fairgrounds. Attendance at BB has
grown from about 200 to 3000 attendees.
Klair, together with Mickey Clark, often takes
the shows to Graham Arena (when available)
or outdoors at Mickey’s Irish Saloon.

MUSING ABOUT
By Sarah Shonyo
T
he auditorium lights beat down on my square black
hat as I fought to maintain consciousness. I squinted
at the back of the guy’s head in front of me. Either my
mind was playing tricks on me, or the fumes from his
cologne were actually causing visible atmospheric changes.
At the signal of the usher, I heaved my body out of the
chair and shuffled toward the stage, relieved to escape the
Stetson assault.
“Sarah Elizabeth…” the professional name announcer
paused.
“Shonyo!” I hissed. “Shahhhn-yo!”
That was it. A relatively anticlimactic conclusion
to a college career that was anything but.
Of course, operating on 45 minutes of sleep following a
night of farewell college indiscretions didn’t exactly leave
me in a reflective mood. In fact, between the incessant
sniffling from the mousey blonde to my left and lack of
olfactory discretion from Stetson man, the entire experience was more nauseating than touching.
Nevertheless, where I entered the auditorium as a lowly
student, I exited as an honest to goodness real person.
Now what?
Between final exams, term papers, packing, and “fixing” the holes in our apartment walls with mint-colored
toothpaste, I actually had time to apply for a real job.
Much to my amazement, I was offered the chance to
interview for the position. Because the job was in Rochester, I hopped the Wisconsin border and stayed with
my parents the night before the interview. After dinner,
as I absentmindedly scraped a piece of dried rice off my
sleeve, my mother asked what I was planning to wear the
next day. The subsequent silence served as my answer.
I didn’t own any nice clothes. I hadn’t worn anything
without an elastic waistband since 2001.
Faced with absolutely no options other than my strapless
mauve prom dress from 11th grade, I swallowed my
have reeked of responsibility – I was extended the job offer two days after the interview.
Thrilled with my accomplishment, I decided to push the
dependability envelope with what I thought to be the
ultimate acquisition: a dog. A perfect way, I reasoned, to
prepare myself for the inevitable condemnations associated with parenthood.
Within a week I had adopted a four
year old pit-terrier beagle (or something)
matic. Clean, nice-smelling, and free – but traumatic.
And so, in an effort to make my life as hard as possible,
I decided to buy a house.
Sure, buying a three bedroom, two bath house with a
finished basement may have been a bit of an overkill, but
I really liked the paint colors and thought it would be nice
to have the extra space. For what, exactly, I’m still not sure.
I didn’t own a bed, a table, a cookie sheet, or any
towels without “Sarah S.” written on the tag, but I
owned a house. Buying a typical starter home would

relationship.
have made sense, given that I’m a single woman whose
only dependent is a 35 pound dog, but the banker said
I could “technically afford” anything under $125,000. It
seemed that not spending it all would be like wasting the
last 43 cents on a gift card.
As much as I was enjoying the transition from the reckless
abandon of college to the relative maturity of adulthood,
it was hard to work the independent woman angle while
squatting in my parents’ basement.
I am neither embarrassed nor ashamed to admit that I
had no idea what I was doing. Really, I made it all up as
I went. Uncertainty was my norm, and if I ever said otherwise I was lying through my teeth.
Albeit, a basement that housed a flat screen
television, DVD player, computer, a full
bath, and more square footage than my
previous three apartments combined.
As grateful as I was, the shift from living in sub-standard apartments with
crunchy carpet to suddenly finding

And now, two years post-college, I am
stronger than ever. I’ve survived college,
buying my first house, owning a dog,
being diagnosed with narcolepsy, a nasty
break up (or two), and wearing pantyhose to work every day.

3 Stories About 3 Local Couples: One Dating, One Engaged, One Married!

By Renee Berg
It can happen, so check your pessimism at
the door. You’ve read the lists advising
wannabe boyfriends and girlfriends to check
for potential mates at the grocery store or
in line at the ATM. “You never know when
you’ll meet someone!” friends coo when
you’re down on your luck in love.

And then there’s the bar, where plenty
of people have become smitten on stools
and dance floors. Some later change their
story, they say they met their beloved at the
church social -- this is for Grandma Esther’s
benefit, but in fact it all started over frothy
beers and salt-rimmed margaritas. Or with
20 questions, as one Rochester women
says her now-boyfriend kicked off their
get-to-know-you session, or with a swapped
business card, as another recalls – a woman
who later said “I do” to the card’s owner –
or with a one-night stand that turned into
coffee in the morning, hand-picked flowers
and Easter dinner with the rellies.
So have heart, your dateless streak could
end one night. When you’re wearing a
baseball cap, because you’re still recovering
from last night’s revelry. It could happen
just as it did for these couples, one dating,
one engaged, one wed.

JODI ENGLE & BEN MOON
Dating!
It was a Tuesday night and she was with a
friend, but he headed home early.
Jodi stayed for another round at Shar’s
Country Palace in Rochester because a
guy with an intriguing voice and looks
was standing nearby. “I thought, ‘This is
a guy with a story,’ so I hung around.”
Soon enough he started talking to her.
“It was an interview actually,” Jodi says.
“Where I worked, did I want to get married
and have kids, the typical stuff. We hit it off.”
They spent that night at her place, and
Ben stayed for coffee in the morning. He
left his name and number but Jodi was still
considering it a one-night stand until she
ran into him at Shar’s a few nights later.
Ben said he’d been waiting for her call.
His friend went further: “He’s been talking
about you non-stop.”
Jodi liked Ben’s pastimes -- hunting and
fishing -- and that he seemed non judgmental. He scored points for his
devotion to family, for picking Jodi
flowers rather than buying roses,
for not being divorced, for not having kids.
“It’s the same thing with me,” Jodi says.
“It’s nice to find someone who, eventually if
you do get married and have kids, you can
start that life together.”

JUSTIN WEAVER & JENNIFER SCHMIDT
Engaged!
This couple is headed to the altar this
month, and their romance began at
Rochester’s Westfire Grille. Justin was
meeting friends and part of the gang was
a cute nurse who didn’t mind that he was
hobbling on crutches. Or that he lived with
his mother, or wasn’t working because he
was on medical leave.
The group met up again another night,
chatted more and Justin left with Jennifer’s
phone number. Their first real date was
dinner at Whistle Binkie’s Olde World Pub
and a movie, “The Chronicles of Narnia.”
“I got brave and grabbed her hand and she
didn’t pull away, so I figured she must have
liked me at least a little bit,” Justin says.
Jennifer says she liked him straight away
– he was tall, cute and slightly nerdy with
his glasses on. A bit shy too, but after a few
dates she managed to draw him out. “I was
so calm with him and comfortable, and
usually I’m not comfortable with people
right away,” she says, knowing then that
Justin was her for-life guy.
He later popped the question over dinner
at Victoria’s. Jennifer’s mechanic was
dressed in somewhat formal attire (fibbing
and claiming that all of his other duds were
dirty), when he got down on one knee and
proposed. They’re having their groom’s
dinner at Victoria’s this month, then they’ll
get married and head to Niagara Falls for
their honeymoon.
He thinks she’s cute in her navy RN scrubs,
they cook together and watch movies. He
says their met-in-a-bar story is nothing
extravagant, but it matters not. “When you
meet someone you want to spend your life
with, it doesn’t matter where it was,” he says.
+ Couple Three
BETH AND WALTER BROICH IV
Married!
For this smart, sassy, outgoing brunette,
meeting men in bars was nothing new.
During college, she hooked up with a guy
whose girlfriend was sitting nearby – that
was Bill, for whom she moved from her
native Minnesota to California. And who
broke up with her two years after it began,
just before the holidays.
She was still recovering from the split
(envision a first class ticket home, a U-Haul
full of stuff arriving later) when friends
invited her to Sunday breakfast in
Minneapolis. They were setting her up, but
the guy intended for her “wasn’t interested,”
she recalls. Instead she struck up a conversation with a group of 20-somethings sharing
their table at the busy Uptown eatery.
At some point, someone cracked a joke
and the man next to her glanced over.
“Then I noticed his really, really blue eyes,”
she says. Beth, meet Walt.
The breakfast ended with food eaten, drinks
downed, but no numbers exchanged. Until
she was on the sidewalk headed for the car.
Then Beth felt a pull.
“I turned around and
there was a girl from
the table,” she says.
“She had Walt’s business card and his home
phone number was
written on the back.”
It’d be Beth’s loss if she
didn’t go out with him,
the woman warned.
Beth called a few days
later, during the day,
and left a message so
Walt could choose
whether he wanted to
respond. A safe, little
test to gauge his true
interest, she figured. He
called on a Thursday
night and they talked
for more than two hours
– impressive for the
typically reserved Walt,
a guy’s guy who likes
to hunt big game – and
arranged to go out for
their first date.
After the second date, they were together
daily. Beth liked that he was four years older,
had his own condo and owned his own chiropractic firm. Her outgoing nature paired
with his reserve “balances us out,” she says.
They got married on Aug. 11, 2001, and
have a son. Through them, Walt’s best
friend paired off with Beth’s sister – now
they’re wed too, which makes family
gatherings all the more pleasant.
Walt’s family loves to prod the couple to tell
their tale of finding love over her Screwdriver and his Bloody Mary. Her family likes
it too, especially the part where she forecasted their future well before the first date.
“I remember having his card and going over
to my parents’ house the next day,” Beth
says. “I said, ‘I met a doctor,’ and my Dad
said, ‘A chiropractor isn’t exactly a doctor.’”
Close enough. “It’ll say doctor on the
wedding invitations,” she replied. It did.

MY DEAL
••
By Jeffrey Johnson
ROCHESTER’S
PERFECT
GUITARIST
Bakkus guitarist
Ruben Bonilla Guerrero
works with knives in the day
and plays on an axe at night.
“You see that guy playing that guitar?
He’s only been playin’ for a year and a half.”
I couldn’t really respond. All of my senses were overwhelmed. With the usual ‘bar’ smell and a swig of my
beer, I watched intently as the band members were captivating characters making totally rockin’ music.“Whoa!”
I thought. (“Whoa” more like The Fonz from Happy
Days versus Joey from Blossom.) “Check that guy out?”
The lead singer–he was pretty goth, sounded great and
was way intense. (You’re going to have to wait for my upcoming deal about that guy. You really won’t believe it.)
After a few songs, I knew I was going to stay at The North
Star all night. I really couldn’t get my eyes and ears off the
band Bakkus and that left stage guitarist, Ruben Bonilla
Guerrero!
That first time I saw Bakkus was a couple of years ago.
Now I’ve seen them a lot. When I watch and listen to
them, I’m still blown away. I listen to a lot of recorded
music, and the covers Bakkus plays are rock with precision, and are close to perfection. It’s easier to hear the
right notes of a singer’s voice than the notes of a guitar,
but I can tell you that Mr. Guerrero hits ‘em every time.
Perhaps it’s because his day job is working for the Mayo
Clinic in Cancer Research, but it’s also because Ruben respects those who create the music – and in turn, he plays
it just for the music’s sake.
“I try to do the best that I can in my work and my music,”
stated Ruben.“To me, there’s not much difference. In
medicine you need to read and prepare. You need to be
humble, allowing peers and superiors to criticize your
work and point out mistakes without getting upset. You
know you know, but you know that you don’t know
enough compared to your peers. You are still able to work

MY DEAL
well, to be your best, to be one of the best, but at the
same time there is always somebody superior to you who
knows more and is able to correct you.”
Ruben then expounded further on the comparison.
“We (the band members) know what we know. We know
what we can do and we know what we cannot do. We are
humble, too. Any one of us, at any given time, can stop a
practice and say,‘Stop right there. You did that wrong. It
didn’t sound right.’ We don’t get upset. We ask questions
like ‘what happened?’ or ‘how should I be doing it?’ We
correct the issue right there and get it done right. I think
that level of perfection is important.”
Ah! There it is – perfection. I saw the dude playin’ it, I told
you about it, and now you heard it (read it), right from
himself.
“In medicine, you cannot afford a mistake because we’re
talking about people’s lives. In music, in a different weight
and scale, you don’t have the luxury to make a mistake
because a song does not lie. Music does not lie. Either you
play it right or you play it wrong. I always try to play the
piece the closest to perfect as I can. In medicine and in
music, you have to be the closest to perfect. We are not
perfect, but I think it doesn’t hurt to try to be as close to
perfect as you can.”
Ultimately, everyone in Bakkus has similar standards.
Ruben remarked,“We hold each other at a very high standard and that has... kept us together. My band members
are like family. I mean, we’re like brothers. Brothers who
fight, kick each other, who really love each other. And I
know that any one of us can call another anytime and say,
‘Hey dude, I need this’ or ‘Help me’ or whatever. Actually
last year, September 6, was the saddest day of my life – I
lost my mother. My band members are the ones who actually held me together and helped me through the rough
times by playing music with them and just spending time
with them, people who care for you and doing what you
like to do.”
As you can see, Ruben holds his band mates in very high
regard.“We are very different. We have different backgrounds... different jobs, different kinds of family, different personalities. We are very diverse but that is good
because that fills the whole soul of the band. We look
different. We act very different and everybody’s got their
own things going on. But, behind all of that is the fact that
we hold very similar values overall and keep the quality of
the music the highest it can be.”
When Bakkus decides on a certain song, Ruben is assured
that the other band members work and play to their best
ability. For himself, that means learning the song note
by note.“I do two things. I listen to the music and get a
music sheet. I listen to the entire structure of the song
and then break it into pieces... then learn it that way with
the music sheet. Section by section. Note by note. That
is when I am ready. I am not the one that goes,‘Yeah, I
kind of know I can get through it.’ I can’t. I can’t do that.
That’s not me. I need to know the song. A lot of people
think that is a bit obsessive. I don’t. It is just a way to get
things done right. If you want to play a song the way it is
supposed to be played, you need to play it right. You have
to be faithful to the person who originally came up with
the idea, spend the time and have the knowledge to put
everything together... (out of) respect to them.”
So who do you think Ruben gives his utmost respect?
None-other-than Ozzy Osbourne – and his current
guitarist Zakk Wylde. Why exactly? “Ozzy has an extraordinary ear for extraordinary talent,” explained Ruben.
“I would say at the same time, his wife Sharon is a good
business person – someone else who knows how to identify a person, besides the music, who has the presence and
ability to transcend through the people and become an
image. That is why Zakk is a guitar playing icon.”
To go along with his respect of Osbourne and Wylde,
Guerrero tries to mimic them. Perhaps one of the greatest
things about him, other than his perfect guitar playing, is
his rocker stance. I told him how cool he looked up there
on stage goin’, “Dun, dun, dunnin, dun, dun, dunnin!”
Ruben responded,“I first thought it came from imitating Zakk, but after a while I realized that is the way I play.
That’s the way my hands feel comfortable with the make
of the guitar. I can go from cords to notes and notes to
cords very fast and concise in that position. It’s not just a
pose, it’s actually the way I play.”
After Ruben’s Ode to Zakk Wylde, I wanted to know
about his favorites. We talked about Johnny Cash and
Elvis, both of which he is a fan, but I kind of knew what
his answers to my next few questions would be.
I asked Ruben what his favorite guitar riff was. Yes, of
course it came from an Ozzy guitarist, but actually he has
three – from three different Ozzy Osbourne guitarists.
First: The Mob Rules by Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath
Second: Over the Mountain by Randy Rhoads with Ozzy
Third: Miracle Man by Zakk Wylde with Ozzy
What is Ruben’s favorite song?
Mr. Crowly by Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads
Favorite Album?
Don’t think too far off from what you have already read.
However, Ruben is a showman, so he is all about the
solo and the live album. Well, here we are again.
Favorite Three Albums:
First: Tribute by Ozzy Osbourne
with Randy Rhoads (to Randy Rhoads)
Second: Live at Budokan
by Ozzy Osbourne with Zakk Wylde
Third: The World Slavery Tour 1984
by Iron Maiden with various guitarists.
One of the ‘similar values’ each band member possesses is
caring about people and causes. Bakkus has done many benefits.
“Somebody asks us if we can do this – for free, and we play for
four hours,” says Ruben. On September 8th the band will be
giving their all for another benefit – this one for military families
throughout Southeast Minnesota, at Strikers in Stewartville.
What a perfect time for you to watch and listen to the band
as you give to someone in need!

MY DEAL
Ruben Bonilla Guerrero - BIO
on guitar, a defining moment that
took him directly to the local music school in Mexico to take guitar
lessons. Sadly, Metal was not even
close to being listened to or taught
in music schools in his native Mexico.
In a way, Reuben forgot about his
desire to learn guitar until he was
given a Gibson Les Paul Custom by
a famous guitar player (Just look at
his guitars and you will know who
that is).
Coming from Mexico, Ruben is
among the best lead guitar players
in Rochester. Throw in the fact that
he has been playing for less than
two years, and his playing ability is
incredible. His desire to be perfect
drives the rest of the band to do the
same.
Influenced by Zakk Wylde, Randy
Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Tony Iommy
and Ace Frehley, Ruben loves to
make his guitar sing and squeal like
a stuck pig. When he is not playing with the band, he is a worldrenowned cancer researcher at the
Mayo Clinic.
Ruben discovered music at the age
of 6 and took piano lessons until
the age of 12, when he listened to
KISS for the first time and found
himself trapped by the sound of
electric guitar. A friend then gave
him an LP, (yes, an LP record) of
Ozzy Osbourne, with Randy Rhoads
He immediately started guitar lessons here in town. With the help of
brutal 2 hour long guitar practice
sessions every day at home, he was
finally able to play the music that
he had listened to for the first time
Ruben is a very fortunate person;
thanks to his work and dedication
as a physician (in the search for
the cure of cancer and in the diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism) he is able to afford the very
best music gear. But don’t be mistaken by these facts about him; he
is one of the most humble guys you
will ever meet.
He uses Gibson Les Paul Custom
Shop guitars, a Jackson Randy
Rhoads “Concord” guitar and a Karl
Sandoval Randy Rhoads Polka Dot
guitar (coming soon) loaded with
GHS Boomers custom shop strings
(10 1/2, 13 1/2, 17, 36, 48, 56 for
standard tuning and 11, 14, 18,
36, 48, 58 for low tuning) stereo
powered by two Marshall JCM 800
sounding to a full stacks of Marshall Cabinets loaded with Celestion
75W speakers; all these modulated
by a Jim Dunlop Wylde Wah and
Rotovibe pedals while enhanced by
a MXR EVH phase 90, Wylde overdrive ZW-44 and a Stereo Chorus
M-134; everything connected with
Monster Prolink Rock cables.
Ruben’s goal to be powered by two
stereo JCM 800 full stacks was
fulfilled not long ago, by saving all
his proceeds from the band to buy
his second Marshall full stack. So
don’t surprised when you come to
one of the shows and you see a wall
of Marshalls behind a little beast of
Mexican guitar player.
