ANNUAL REPORT
2011
Providing Hope for the Whole Family
Realizing Potentials for Children with Special Needs
Developing Strengths for Youth and Young Adults
I
would say that Adam’s Camp is not to be missed. Every child attending camp comes away
with new abilities and new strengths each year. It is the best thing my family and I have EVER
experienced.

•17.1% of all Colorado children have special healthcare needs
(Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment) • Costs of healthcare continue to rise while state funding continues to fall, leaving limited treatment options for Colorado’s youth with disabilities.

Mission Statement
The mission of Adam’s Camp is to maximize
the strengths and potential of children and
young adults with special needs by bringing
together dedicated families with outstanding
professionals and volunteers to provide
specialized therapy programs, family support
and recreational camps.
Why This Work is So Important
•Developmental gains translate into greater school, social and employment success.
Impact
Since 1986, Adams Camp has created countless
stories of progress and hope for over 9000
children with special needs and their family
members through therapy, respite, education
and recreation. 89% of parents report that
their child made significant progress toward
identified goals in their week at camp. These
results, documented in a digital picture report,
provide a treatment roadmap for the child’s
ongoing care from therapists, physicians,
teachers and caregivers. 325 youth and young
adults build independence and relationships
through our Adventure Camps.

ur daughter had another amazing growth experience seasoned with fun with Adam's Camp
staff. A volunteer was a role model and support for our daughter and the other female
campers. We are grateful for their commitment to these special children. Their willingness
to spend a summer giving the gifts of fun, adventure and independence to our child is appreciated
more than words can express. Marianna comes home from Adam's Camp a more confident child
every summer. She is more willing to try new things and go new places.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2011
Successes:
• 9% increase in Adventure Camp campers and 9% increase in Pathfinder/Trailblazer campers served, in spite of the economy and drastic cuts to funding available
to families
• Implemented use of iPads on all therapy teams, increasing the practical use of technology with all children, particularly those who are nonverbal
• Met our fundraising goals for 2011 even in a slowed economy
• Provided over $55,000 in scholarship funding to our clients
• Broke ground on an Adam’s Camp gathering area at Snow Mountain Ranch. This area includes a large fire ring, casual seating and picnic tables to enhance the community we foster throughout our programs.
Challenges:
• Providing a rewarding and successful camp experience for every child, no matter how difficult the behavior challenges associated with their special needs. This was also a success in that every child completed camp and had a good experience.
• Continuing to respond to the ever-changing rules of Medicaid and Medicare; however, only a small percentage of our clients are able to access this funding for our program.
• After creating a partnership with Hilltop in Grand Junction, the depressed economy in Grand Junction prevented recruitment of enough families to conduct a session.
I
loved that it was the full family experience. Our child with special needs was able to work with
a very professional group of therapists and get the most out of his week. Our ‘typical’ child also
had a blast! It was great for him to bond with others like him where he didn’t have to explain
why his brother does the things he does.

hank you to all of you who help make camp a reality for us. Everyone is always so kind and
helpful. You make the process from registration, to payment, to enrollment to camp days
easy. You never seem to get tired of questions no matter how many or on what topic. We are

Adam’s Camp is fortunate to have strong
support from our families.
Five of our 15 dedicated board members have children with special
needs who attend Adam’s Camp.
Seven out of 10 staff members are parents of Adam’s Campers.
This level of involvement allows us to keep a close eye on the
needs of our families and the strategies that best work for our
programs.

Adam’s camp is proud to designate 85% of our
income directly to program expenses.
Adam’s Camp is proud to designate 85% of our income directly to program expenses.
Thanks to our generous volunteers, and to those who donate legal, accounting, printing,
designing and other services to Adam’s Camp, we are able to operate with low overhead.
Adam’s Camp receives income through a variety of sources. Money raised through
fundraising efforts allows us to subsidize more than 50% of the cost of camp for
every client and family. On top of this, we provide over $50,000 in scholarship funding to
families in need each year.
