years earlier to usher in the reign of Duke Charles of Burgundy. Charles and his bride Margaret of York (sister of
two British kings) resided at the palace (now a Kempinski hotel) after their “wedding of the century” in Bruges
in 1468. Their ceremony followed nine days of feasts and entertainment. You’ll capture some of that spirit and

Led by a Brugean town crier, you’ll stroll with the group to a neo-Gothical marvel, started in 1876 and built in
phases until 1921, for provincial government meetings. It now hosts a variety of ceremonies and exhibitions. A
musical quartet will greet you on the stairs as you move inside, surrounded by stunning stained-glass windows
and ironwork as you enjoy your meal with an array of beers, wine, water and soft drinks.

From the 13th to the 16th century, much of Bruges’ commerce was conducted in the Hallen, with the Belfort
(hall tower) housing the city’s treasures, archives and armory, topped by the bell chamber. The halls came first,
mainly for wool and cloth trade and warehouses. Today you’ll find modern banquet and exhibition comforts
there awaiting your experience with Congress delegates from across the globe. The Belfry’s summit (366 steep
steps) offers panoramic views of Bruges and the surrounding countryside all the way to the sea.

ANDREA CROONENBERGHS, FLEMISH TV JOURNALIST
Practicing the skills she refined for 25 years as a TV reporter, she will set the pace for the
day’s discussions, challenging presenters to succinctly articulate the relevance of their
comments to your business. Croonenberghs has also been a prominent actress (film,
theater, TV), radio personality and musician. She is an ardent supporter of charitable
causes including Alzheimer’s and cancer research, Doctors without Borders and facilitating
incarcerated parents’ contact with their children.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
HERMAN VAN ROMPUY
PRESIDENT, EUROPEAN COUNCIL, 2010-2014
Appointed in 2009, Van Rompuy was the first full-time president of the European Council,
the arm of the European Union (EU) consisting of its heads of state. He was reappointed
in 2012. Among his accomplishments was facilitating cooperation among Eurozone
countries to help Greece (and later Ireland and Portugal) stabilize borrowing costs while
preventing economic contagion throughout the EU. Van Rompuy’s service was also marked
by successful coordination of European interests on the world stage at summits (G8, G20,
bilateral including EU-China) and in the Libya crisis. In 2014 he was awarded the International Charlemagne
Prize, the oldest and best-known honor for advancing European unity, for a variety of mediation feats led by
saving the euro.
At the time of Van Rompuy’s first election, he was prime minister of Belgium. He had served in Belgium as
Speaker of the House of Representatives (2007-2008) and in several government positions, including Minister
of Budget (1993-1999), Minister of State (2004) and Secretary of State for Finance and Small Businesses (1988).
As budget minister, together with finance minister Philippe Maystadt, he helped drive down Belgium’s debt
from a peak of 135% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 1993. It fell to below 100% of GDP in 2003.
A former economist at the National Bank of Belgium, Van Rompuy began his political career in 1973 as national
vice president of his party’s youth council. He has held various responsibilities within his party and in the
Belgian Parliament, serving in turn as Senator (1988-1995) and Member of Parliament (1995-2009).
MARC HERREMANS
IRONMAN TRIATHLETE, COACH, PHILANTHROPIST
His recollections will build your persistence and persuade you to set lofty goals.
Training for triathlons since 1998, this Belgian was destined to reach the apex of the
sport. At the 2001 Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, widely regarded as the
toughest triathlon competition, Herremans finished sixth. In 2002, he fell during bike
training, paralyzing him from his stomach to his feet. Just three months later, however,
he began training as a wheelchair athlete. He began to compete again in Hawaii right
away and in 2006 was the first wheelchair athlete to arrive at the finish. In 2007, he achieved the same

feat at the Crocodile Trophy, recognized as the hardest mountain-bike championship in the world.
In 2003, Herremans established To Walk Again, a foundation that provides disabled people with a chance
for revalidation and sports. He started coaching in 2008 and soon was acclaimed for guiding triathletes
and cyclists. Four years later, with the help of a stepping robot, he walked again. And he started another
charity: Project U-Turn, organizing adventure trips for people with disabilities.
Hearing his talk will convince you that he’s rightfully earned the nickname “Mad Max” for unmatched
determination and unwillingness to give up.

A micro-electronics engineer turned comedian, Denoyelle will wrap up the day’s

with a positive outlook of the industry’s future. Dirk has brought comedy to companies
and conferences since 2001. After getting his degree in 1987, he worked for IMEC
(micro-electronics research), was a freelance reporter and fulfilled military service. But
by 1991, he became a professional comedian.
