Gent 1913 - 2013
The Century of Progress!
On 26 April 2013 a hundred years will have passed
since the opening of the ‘World Exposition’ in Gent.
With this event Gent deliberately joined the many cities
that had hosted the world’s fair since 1851, showcasing
their economic, technological and cultural successes to
the world. In our country, this world’s fair marked the
grand entry into the 20th century, which would become
a century of unique progress. Fast-forward a hundred
years and Gent is looking back at that spectacular event
with ‘Gent 1313. The century of progress!’. Just like
during the Maeterlinck Year the cultural associations of
Gent are joining creative forces to offer you an interesting and varied programme including exhibitions and various publications, as
well as many other activities. 1913 is also the year when the Vooruit events hall
opened its doors, a second centenary that is perfectly in line with the theme of
‘1313’, namely a social progress. As such, it is an enriching addition to this event.
Restoration
of the Mystic Lamb
The restoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Van Eyck
brothers, started in September. The thorough
restoration is being carried out under the supervision of
Anne van Grevenstein-Kruse, Professor Emeritus of
Conservation and Restoration at the University of
Amsterdam, and will span some ﬁve years, with three
phases of one and a half years each. The Cathedral,
the Museum of Fine Arts and the Carmelite Friary
are joining forces to tell the story of this
masterpiece during its restoration.

of Contemporary Art (S.M.A.K.), the Dr Guislain Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts,
St Peter’s Abbey, the World of Kina, the City Museum (STAM), the Museum of Industrial
Archaeology and Textiles (MIAT), the Design Museum Gent and the House of Alijn –
totally free! Let the city’s museums surprise you with their original and fascinating
programmes. Use Tram 1 during Museum Night.
The Museum Night will be heralding the start of Gent Art Week (Gentse Kunstweek),
